Oooh Baby (7")
Cat: ICR 003. Rel: 25 Apr 19
  1. Oooh Baby
  2. Only The Lonely Know
Review: Crate digging soul sorts Ice City Records continue to unearth gems and offer them up to the heads at reasonable prices. Pamoja's "Oooh, Baby" is considered by many diggers to be one of the greatest "crossover soul" records ever. It's certainly one of the most rare, with original copies of the 1975 private press seven-inch that contained it frequently selling for hundreds of pounds online. The track itself remains a sun-kissed gem, with sweet vocals and glistening jazz guitar riffs wrapped around warm bass and bustling funk drums. Curiously, first time around it was merely the B-side to tearful soul ballad "Only The Lonely Know", which here is given another airing on the flipside. It's good, but nowhere near as potent as "Oooh, Baby".

  1. Love Overdue
  2. Remember To Remember
Review: When it comes to crafting retro-futurist soul gems - think traditional soul instrumentation and vocals with modern production trickery - Tanika Charles has an impressive track record. The Canadian artist won plenty of praise for her recent album "The Gumption", from which the two tracks that make up this limited-edition single are taken. The standout is undoubtedly the sunny, Hammond-heavy soul stomp of title track "Love Overdue", a cut so sweet, jaunty and sticky that it might make diabetics go weak at the knees. There's a similarly stomping feel about breezier flipside "Remember To Remember", where Charles delivers an impeccable, R&B style vocal over a thrusting, Northern Soul style beat.

Easy Baby (7")

  1. Easy Baby
  2. Geriatric Dance
Review: Dedicated to the Hammond-heavy 1960s soul-jazz sounds of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Grant Green and Reuben Wilson, the Beat Bronco Organ Trio are a fresh outfit with classic inspirations. The Madrid threesome's debut single is something of a retro-futurist treat. We're really enjoying A-side "Easy Baby", a loose and languid fusion of ear-pleasing Hammond licks, laidback, breakbeat-driven drums and flanged jazz guitars that impressively increases in intensity throughout, culminating in a frenzy of sweaty drums and eyes-closed guitar solos. "Geriatric Dance", meanwhile, is even more up-tempo, with high octane Hammond and jazz guitar solos stretching out over a feverish funk drumbeat.

I Choose You (Record Store Day 2019) (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: KA 1003P. Rel: 24 Apr 19
  1. I Choose You
  2. Punkin' Funkin'
Review: It would be fair to say that Paris Holley is not one of the best-known purveyors of 1980s funk and soul, though the handful of releases he put out in the decade tend to be cherished by serious diggers and DJs. 1984 jam "I Choose You", which is here reissued for the first time since the '80s, is undoubtedly one of his standout moments. Hazy, super-sweet and laidback, the cut sees Holley adding his soulful, high octave tones to a blissful backing track rich in fluid piano lines, sun-kissed guitars and mazy synth lines. Arguably even better is synth-funk B-side "Punkin' Funkin", a fizzing workout that sounds like a more soulful, talkbox-free take on Zapp man Roger Troutman's trademark sound.

Cat: PR 65022P. Rel: 24 Apr 19
  1. Pick Up The Pieces
  2. Get It Up For Love (with Ben E King)
Review: If you're a DJ who digs funk, soul and disco, there's a fair chance that you are familiar with Average White Band classic "Pick Up The Pieces", a staple of those kinds of sets - and, of course, hip-hop, where its killer break has been looped countless times over the years - since its initial release in 1974. Should you not own a copy of the distinctive, horn-heavy classic, we'd suggest picking up this reissue, not least because it also boasts the band's lesser-known cover of Ned Doheny classic "Get It Up For Love", featuring vocals from no less than Ben E King, on the flip. Their version of the hazy blue-eyed soul gem sits somewhere between Doheny's original version and the arguably better known Tata Vega disco cover.

  1. Spirit (12:18)
  2. Spirit (Zaf & Phil Asher edit) (11:35)
Review: Spirit's impossible-to-find 1979 debut album "Put Your Hands Together" has long been a favourite of those dusty-fingered crate diggers who love gospel soul, funk and disco. Here Rain & Shine offer a chance to own the album's standout moment, 12 minute opener "Spirit", for a fraction of the cost of the album. It's an absolute stunner - a busy, energetic gospel-soul/gospel-disco hybrid that simply increases in intensity throughout (with no small thanks to some killer organ solos). Turn to the flip and you'll find the added bonus of Phil Asher and The Mighty Zaf's punchy re-edit, which not only re-arranges the track for maximum dancefloor impact, but also plays around with the EQs to produce a weightier low-end sound.

  1. You Can't Hide From Yourself
  2. The More I Get, The More I Want
Review: This special Record Stay Day reissue gathers together two of Philadelphia soul legend Teddy Pendergrass' finest dancefloor moments. Both are essential, making this a must-buy for disco DJs who've yet to acquire them. On the A-side you'll find "You Can't Hide From Yourself", a sumptuously orchestrated affair whose killer groove is matched in quality by Pendergrass' impassioned vocal (check the rasping freestyle vocalizations towards the end for proof). Equally as impressive is "The More I Get, The More I Want", an insatiably sexually charged affair that builds in intensity throughout and not only contains one of the funkiest basslines in disco history, but also some seriously addictive female backing vocals.

  1. Space Princess (7:04)
  2. Quiet Moments (3:53)
Review: Lonnie Liston Smith made a lot of rather good records in the 1970s and '80s, though few are quite as heavy, intergalactic and intoxicating as "Space Princess". Initially recorded and released in 1978 as the opening track of his jazz-funk focused "Exotic Mysteries" album, the track - a suitably cosmic workout of epic proportions - quickly became a firm dancefloor favourite at both the Loft and Paradise Garage in New York thanks to its extended, Latin-tinged percussion breaks. Here the original DJ promo 12" gets the reissue treatment, with the peerless classic being accompanied by fellow "Exotic Mysteries" cut "Quiet Moments" - a gentle, samba-soaked shuffle through sunrise-ready jazz-funk bliss.

Review: Although "Africa" is not one of the harder Pharoah Sanders albums to find on vinyl, jazz heads have long complained about the sound quality of the original single-vinyl edition of the 1987 album. It's for this reason that this Tidal Waves Music reissue, which stretches the set across two slabs of wax and adds two previously CD-only tracks ("Heart To Heart" and "Duo"), will simply fly off the shelves. That and the fact that it remains a superb album: a bright, breezy, contemporary jazz masterpiece that sees the legendary saxophonist accompanied by drummer Idris Muhammad, pianist John Hicks and bassist Curtis Lundy. Highlights include the arguably definitive version of Sanders' classic "You've Got To Have Freedom" and a superb update of John Coltrane standard "Naima".

Review: In 1974, trained jazz pianist Edson Frederico quit his job as an arranger and musician on a Brazilian TV channel. Less than a year later he released his first and only solo album, the now sought-after "Edson Frederico E A Transa". As the sleeve credits for this limited Record Store Day reissue prove, it was never really a solo affair; in fact, the multi-talented pianist and organist was joined in the studio by a multitude of vocalists and musicians. The result is a warm and breezy set of songs that perfectly encapsulate the musical melting pot that was Brazilian popular music at the time (think samba, MPB, jazz-funk, fusion, soul, funk and '60s beat music). Frederico's impeccable electric piano and organ playing feature heavily throughout, though they never dominate. Superb stuff all told.

  1. Ah Free Ka (5:08)
  2. In The Jungle (4:56)
  3. Bruda Fela (4:40)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, the "Ah-Free-Ka EP" marks 4hero man Marc Mac's first appearance on Cooperation, the label established by the crew behind legendary West London broken beat night Co-Op, since 2007. Given the label, the veteran producer is in a bruk-up kind of mood, kicking things off with the polyrhythmic broken rhythms, vocoder vocals, jaunty synth riffs and weighty sub-bass of "Ah-Free-Ka". The track's not too subtle old school electro influences are explored further on hybrid bruk/electro/Afro-funk jam "In The Jungle", while "Bruda Fela" is little less than a contemporary broken beat tribute to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Spiritual Fluff EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CVR 0002. Rel: 23 Apr 19
  1. Knocking On The Door Of The Cosmos
  2. Theme For Chicago
  3. Bonus Beats
  4. Son Of Equinox
  5. Payback
Review: The West Loop Chicago collective reportedly span continents, pooling soul-soaked talents into some truly powerful dance music. "Knocking On The Door Of The Cosmos" doffs its cap to Sun Ra with some crafty samples, but the musical vibe is more in line with the likes of Andres, Dego or other such masters of irrepressibly funky house music. "Theme For Chicago" takes an iconic Roy Ayers jam and gets wild with the filter, "Son Of Equinox" trips down a loose and limber jazz funk pathway and "Payback" whips up some tightly clipped samples into a pumped up peak time belter. From start to finish this EP oozes class and authenticity - a serious grip for any self-respecting Midwest heads.

The Planets Edit (limited 7")
Cat: BBR 015. Rel: 23 Apr 19
  1. Planet Edit 1
  2. Planet Edit 2
Review: Having spent much of the recent portion of his career crafting high quality mash-ups and sneaky Jackson family re-edits, former hip-hop beat-maker Jorun Bombay has flipped the script a little of late. Like his previous release, "The Space Jazz-Funk Experience", "The Planets Edit" sees the Canadian producer getting busy with an intergalactic jazz-funk cut of unknown origin. A-side "Planet Edit 1" sets the tone, rearranging a space funk workout that's light on drums but heavy on Moog solos, drowsy electric piano chords, warm bass and hazy guitar riffs. You'll find a more floor-friendly outing on the flip, where "Planet Edit 2" underpins deep space synth solos with crunchy, head-nodding hip-hop style funk beats.
