Parliament Edits (limited 7") (1 per customer)
Cat: BBR 024. Rel: 05 Dec 19
  1. Knee Deep (edit) (4:12)
  2. Mothership Bonus Beats (remix) (3:54)
Review: Jorun Bombay likes to muck about with all sorts of different beats, but he always does it with real skill and personality. That's made him one Canada's most revered hip hop stars and here he tackles the one and only Parliament. His version of "Knee Deep" with its extra bass weight and shrill synth lines bring the party vibes thanks to the feel good pianos. "Mothership Bonus Beats" on the flip is a late night, slow and sleazy jam to get you in the mood. The squelchy synth bass is to die for, the drawn out horns linger long in the air making it a perfectly steamy cut.

Revisiting The Sunshine (7" 再プレス) (1 per customer)
Cat: BBR 019. Rel: 05 Dec 19
  1. Revisiting The Sunshine (4:01)
  2. Funky Sensation (4:19)
Review: One of Canada's most influential hip-hop protagonists Jorun Bombay returns to local Halifax label Black Buffalo, an imprint that launched in 2005 with a 30-copy-only release of his. Following his recent edit series comes this fantastic cover of Roy Ayers in the form of "Revisiting The Sunshine". Authentic to its soulful core, the release is perfectly timed as we're all beginning to miss the summer moving into the colder months. It's backed by an equally sunny shakedown as Gwen McCrae's "Funky Sensation" gets a precision Bombay treatment. Sensational.

  1. Blood Lust (1:56)
  2. The Boiler Room (1:32)
  3. It's Just A Dream (2:19)
  4. Man Hunt (1:43)
Review: DJ Danny Dan The Beat Mann steps out of the Dusty Fingers shadows with a full live band for this new edition of one of the most comprehensive break collection series known to man. Four breaks, all wrapped up in their own unique vibe, there's a cinematic feel running throughout tapping into the OST source so many samples are taken from. Hungry for tension? Get yourself some "Blood Lust". Need that moody atmosphere vibe to break up the intensity? "The Biler Room" is for you. A little hazy magic to whisk your mix away? You need "It's Just A Dream". Finally, if you're after a more swing and party feel then you can't fail with "Man Hunt". Pure drum magic; get those fingers flexing.

  1. Summoning The Monkey God (45 edit) (3:22)
  2. End Credits (1:49)
  3. End Credits (alternate version) (1:51)
Review: Initially inspired by the work of Ethiopian composer Mulatu Astatke, the Sorcerers are a heavy funk outfit that draws on a variety of influences, from African jazz, soul and funk, to 1970s spy movie soundtracks and obscure library music. They have a new album due in early 2020, hence this taster single. A-side "Summoning The Monkey God" is a lolloping, high-grade affair that sits somewhere between Blaxploitation funk, Roy Budd's soundtrack for "Get Carter" and dusty Italian library music. On the flip you'll find two versions of "End Credits", an up-tempo library funk workout rich in hazy horn lines, Hammond organ licks, wah-wah guitars and flute solos courtesy of storied British musician Chip Wickham.

Diana (red vinyl 7")
Cat: BB 45003. Rel: 04 Dec 19
  1. Diana (Caserta 7 The long Way mix) (6:00)
  2. Diana (Caserta Sing-A-long dub) (5:17)
Review: Bridge Boots main man Caserta has previously proved to be one of the most talented re-editors around, up there with higher profile artists such as the Reflex and Joey Negro. His latest offering, a red seven-inch single featuring new rearrangements of Diana Ross hit "I'm Coming Out", is another beauty. On the A-side he offers up a "Long Way Mix" that gives more prominence to Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards' killer backing track (partly via stripping it back to the groove at key points) while retaining most of Ross' vocals. On the flip you'll find a "Sing-A-Long Dub" that strips it back further during key instrumental passages to allow the Motown legend's vocals to shine.

  1. Synthetic Substitution (instrumental) (4:04)
  2. Synthetic Substitution (Melody mix) (4:07)
Review: First released on green vinyl in 2008 and almost impossible to find since, "Synthetic Substitution" is an instrumental cover version of a celebrated Melvin Gill tune by The Undercover Brother, AKA Kenny Dope collaborator Victor Piagneri. The A-side "Instrumental Mix" re-creates the original version's famous groove, layering it with Clavinet lines, fluid pianos and spacey synth solos not evident on Gill's early '70s original. Arguably even better is the "Melody Mix", which adds in some fine George Benson style jazz guitar solos while retaining the familiar breakbeats, bassline and pianos. If you missed out first time around, we'd recommend copping a copy.

Next Level (7" limited to 230 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: GSM 004. Rel: 03 Dec 19
  1. Next Level (3:57)
  2. Right On (5:19)
Review: Only 230 copies of this hot-to-trot seven-inch exist, so you'll have to move fast to secure a copy. It's certainly well worth picking up, thanks to the quality of the cut-and-paste antics on show from Gimme Some More main men the 45 Brothers. Taking a similar approach to Double Dee and Steinski, "Next Level" sees them stitch together a variety of killer funk grooves and sweaty breakbeats, which are then peppered with all manner of classic hip-hop vocal samples. Flipside "Right On" is an altogether deeper affair with a hazier, more undulating feel and excellent use of deep Rhodes chords, flanged guitar licks and drifting female vocal samples.

  1. Unique Blend - "Gonna Spread The News" (2:25)
  2. AC Tilmon & The Detroit Emeralds - "That's All I Got" (2:58)
Review: This reissue seven-inch offers up another double-header of hard to find heat from the expansive vaults of the legendary Kent label. First up on the A-side is Unique Blend's 1973 cut "Gonna Spread The News", a spiraling chunk of sing-along soul goodness full of heady group vocals, cut-glass strings, hazy horns and clipped guitar riffs. Over on side B you'll find A.C. Tilmon & The Detroit Emeralds' 1975 side "That's All I Got", a slightly more up-tempo and punchier affair that prioritizes groove and vocals over any kind of orchestral sweetness.
