3.5 Minutes Of Funk (7" 再プレス)
Cat: OG 036. Rel: 19 Mar 18
  1. The Whole Darn Family - "3.5 Minutes Of Funk" (3:35)
  2. EPMD - "It's My Thing" (5:44)
Review: It's all about THAT bassline... An era/career/dancefloor-defining loose and slappy groove laid down by cult band and Jarmels-affiliates The Whole Darn Family. A joyous record for all selectors as it stands, the 45" series does what it does best with a sample-craft dot-joining pair-up with another essential floor-burner: EPMD's 1987 debu "It's My Thing". Two serious classics right here.

  1. Beggin' (3:04)
  2. Beggin' (instrumental) (3:08)
Review: Longstanding San Fran soul troupe Monophonics celebrate the release of their fifth album last month with this cheeky 45". Taking The Four Seasons' forever-faved standard "Beggin'" and adding their own uptempo charm, polished guitars and yearning vocals, it's an impressive and respectful cover that's backed up all the way with a stone cold instrumental on the B. Some classics never grow old...

  1. Blood Of An American (4:21)
  2. Everyone Should Have His Day (2:42)
Review: While most of the obscure old records being reissued by Floating Points' Melodies label fetch eye-wateringly high prices on the second-hand market, there's no doubt that they're all astonishingly good. This latest gem - a little-known 1974 7" from folk-soul songwriter Bobby Wright (now Abu Talib) - is another fantastic example. "Blood of an American", a sweet sounding but politically heavyweight song inspired by the singer-songwriter's opposition to the Vietnam War, is every bit as inspired as the works of that better-known folk-soul legend, Terry Callier. In fact, B-side "Everyone Has His Day" sounds like a long-lost Callier recording. As ever, the record is beautifully packaged and comes bundled with a 16-page "mini-zine" packed with interviews and articles about the record.

  3. Continue The Fun (Space version) (4:40)
  4. Tuto Bay (3:32)
Review: After two 45s on Les Disques Bongo Joe, Dutch Afrofunk space cadets make their debut on Soundway with their first full EP. Hurling all their roots and inspirations into a heady, bewitching brew of west African, Columbian, Caribbean, Latin and all-round cosmic fusion, the results are four slabs of world funk gold. "Down In The Basement" updates highlife styles with a salubrious big-bottomed disco twist, "The Opposite" ups the tempo with a little more cumbia charm while "Continue The Fun" adds a dub mentality to the mix as we're chugged to oblivion with heads down introspection. Finally "Tuto Bay" closes somewhere on a Cuban beach with rum-warmed harmonies. Beautiful.

Dust (7")

  1. Dust (3:42)
  2. Hey Romeo (3:04)
Review: Fresh to Jalapeno last year, Gizelle made her entrance on the leading UK funk imprint last year with "Sweet Memories". With a full album ahead (the follow-up to her 2009 debut Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos), this 45" keeps us sweet in the meantime. Both upbeat contemporary funk jams; "Dust" is a beat-heavy throw-down with strong backing vocals, tight fills and serious drive from Gizelle who leads from the front while "Hey Romeo" ups the tempo with strong focus on the lolloping bassline, surging vocals and fast-lane spirit. Funk dynamite; there's no better label for Smith to be flexing on right now.

Estacion Inmortal (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AK 001. Rel: 19 Mar 18
  1. Huracan
  2. Albatross
  3. Maria (feat Pascale)
Review: Sainte Vie has been working away in the Mexican underground for some time, running Akumandra as a free, digital-only label to help promote all kinds of electronic music. Now it's time for Vie to step up with their first outright release, first time on wax, and hence a new era for the label. The tone is varied across the record, leading in with the worldly drum rattle and string strum of "Huracan", a whirlwind of drama and hand-played musicianship that stands out from the crowd. "Albatross" is a more introspective cut that brings Vie's vocals to the forefront, and then "Maria" chills things out further with a haunting vocal from Pascale and some delicate finger picking guitar delights over a dynamic set of drums.

  6. Aulnay's Tears (3:10)
Review: With releases on 22a, Beat X Changers and Wolf Music, Bradley Zero is very pleased to welcome Neue Grafik onboard his revered imprint. The record itself paying homage to the Parisian house dance scene, while taking cues from the broken beat sound of London - like on the emotive slo-mo soul of "Innervision" feat Wayne Snow or "To Peckham Rye" which definitely takes its cue from Kaidi Tatham. We particularly enjoyed the very Three Chairs influenced deepness of "Dance To Yemanjaor" and the the ruff 'n' dusty MPC jam "Why You" reminiscent of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts series. The tracks are largely sample based, but also employ much more live instrumentation than in previous productions.

  1. Me Voy Pa' Porce (4:09)
  2. Pistola (4:45)
Review: New wave cumbia and Afro-Latin vibes from La Misa Negra: a seven-piece band from Oakland, California. On stage, they deliver an electrifying performance that explodes with infectious dance grooves and punk rock energy, powered by horn and accordion-driven riffs, a fierce rhythm section and a vintage inspired sound. On the strength of their wild and unique shows, they have gained a reputation as one of the most exciting live bands to emerge from the Bay Area in recent years, garnering a diverse fan base that transcends musical, cultural, and generational divides. From the sweltering bossa vibes of "Me Voy Pa' Porce" to the scorching Afro-jazz of "Pistola" which is reminiscent of the legendary Cal Tjader - these guys are one to watch in 2018.

  2. Walking In The Rain (5:27)
Review: Freeezy does it. John Rocca's more synth-based side project Pink Rhythm continues its reissue revival with this highly sought-after 12" that's not been reissued since 1985. Peak yacht funk with all the lavish production flourishes of the era, and strong traces of jazz, each cut stimulates: "Melodies Of Love" is all about the falsettos and Balearic charm while "Walking In The Rain" is a sultry sax-blaster with some of the most powerful bass walks Beggars Banquet ever pressed. Cult.

  1. Morena (4:02)
  2. The Vibes (feat Ephniko) (3:55)
Review: Afro-Carribean Latin fusionists Empresarios have been doing their thing with modest success since the turn of the decade, serving up albums and singles that cleverly combine elements of cumbia, reggae, salsa, hip-hop, dub and house. Here they appear on 7" for the very first time, serving up two typically steamy slabs of ear-pleasing dancefloor fusion for the Virginia-based Boogieburg imprint. While stoned Latin hip-hop flipside "The Vibes" is undoubtedly a cheeky, cheery and quietly impressive affair, it's A-side "Morena" that hits home hardest. Sitting somewhere between electro-cumbia, salsa and skanking Latin pop, it's a full-force blast of sunshine that will sound particularly potent at outdoor parties in the summer months ahead.

Review: We're not sure who's behind these extended Turkish funk and psychedelic pieces but we're glad they've come into our lives. Heavily dubbed and spaced out, each cut casts a heady spell; "Aycicegi" is a low-riding, loose-stringed sleazy funk slice, "Biz Burdayiz" is a nodding cosmic slop of chugging beats, strange acid melts and breathy voice clips while "Gunesi Kesin" closes the show on the slinkiest walking bassline imaginable. Looking forward to the second volume....

Cat: AJX 4135. Rel: 19 Mar 18
  1. Positive Forces (3:41)
  2. All Because Of You (theme instrumental) (3:14)
Review: Acid Jazz has pulled off something of a coup here by persuading legendary '70s soul man Leroy Huston to part with a couple of previously unreleased cuts. A-side "Positive Forces" was recorded by Hutson in 1977 and sits somewhere between the sweeping, orchestrated bliss of Philly soul, the soaring dancefloor celebration of disco and the loose-limbed instrumental goodness of jazz-funk. It's an absolute stunner, all told, and sounds like it was tailor-made for spins at sweltering summer festivals. On the B-side you'll find a previously unreleased instrumental version of 1975's "All Because of You". While a vocal-free version has previously been released, this particular mix includes a little more drum action at the beginning to assist with mixing.

Review: Legendary dub-minded editor Grant Phabao gets busy with Tru Thoughts' most distinctive vocalist and songwriter Alice Russell. First up, her famous cover of White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army". Taking it even further away from the bassline-driven source, if you didn't know it was a cover you'd think it was an original. "Humankind" sees Grant digging into Alice's now ten-year-old second album and switching out the original's nylon-string flamenco fire for a dancehall shaker complete with gravelly hype toasting. Once again, it's so well executed, it's like a whole new original. A seven nation army can't hold us back from this one (sorry).

  2. David Matthews - "Sandworms" (extended Breaks Special edition) (4:22)
Review: The Beats and Breaks series of "Extended Break Edits" has so far succeeded in its stated aim to provide DJs with simple but devastatingly effective rearrangements built around lengthening key percussive packages. The mystery editors behind the series are at it again here, first looping up the distinctive, cowbell and triangle-driven drum passages dotted throughout Bob James' classic "Take Me To The Mardi Gras". On the flip, they take their scalpel to David Matthews' 1977 jazz-funk gem "Sandworms", casually making merry with the proto hip-hop beat, rubbery bass guitar, flanged guitar riffs and snaking saxophone solos.

Takes Tomah (12" 再プレス) (1 per customer)
Cat: 000. Rel: 19 Mar 18
  1. Track 1 (6:36)
  2. Track 2 (6:55)
Review: This tasty 12" sees Italian crate diggers Twice and Volcov each have a go at reworking a 1979 jazz-funk workout from one of krautrock's lesser-celebrated outfits. The original - which, in case you fancy looking it up, isn't actually called "Tomah" - is a brilliant fusion of Brazilian influenced rhythms, sparring electric piano solos and relentless bass. Twice's A-side version maintains the essence of the original, expertly rearranging and extending the various solos to create a mind-altering chunk of breathless dancefloor bliss. Volcov takes a slightly different approach on the flip, turning it into a rolling samba-house groover complete with fluttering clarinet solos. Both versions are superb, and sound like summer anthems in the making.

  2. The Inside Man (part 2 - Soopasoul remix) (4:16)
Review: Back in 2014, Timewarp Music asked DJ Soopasoul to remix "Inside Man", one of the strongest cuts from Croatian producer Funky Destination's funk-fuelled debut album, Revolution is Only Solution. While one mix appeared on a digital-only label compilation, Soopasoul actually handed in two reworks. Here both get an outing on wax for the first time. The A-side version is particularly sweet, with Soopasoul layering the original's meandering and lilting trumpet solo over a rolling funk groove rich in big bass, jangling guitars and frenetic drum breaks. The flipside revision emphasizes this groove more, looping and extending the breaks for easier DJ use and a livelier dancefloor response.

Review: Tagged as 'juke', Surly's second release to date is much more grounded in jazz and hard bop. The Polish newcomer has impressed with this release so far, taking traditional visions of the genre onto new and exciting territories that have been explored only superficially over the last decade. What is most special about the tunes on Trip To Warsaw is how genuine they sound and feel. For most wannabe jazz musicians, the vibe can feel a little forced at time, but Surly's methods of instrumentation feel as natural around drum machines and synths as they would do around a 5-piece band with brass, piano, bass and wind instruments. This really is a trip in every sense of the word, and it might just well be the release of the month from us. Warmly recommended.

Review: Cult folk funk opus from two Hawaiian sons of a dolphin whisperer, this self-titled album was written and released 45 years ago but still sounds just as calming, alluring and mystical as ever. The dreamy flutes and staggered tempo of "Wake Me In The Morning", the gutsy ballad and soaring strings of "Joe Arnold", the staccato bluesy pop of "Katy" and the positively Balearic classic "High Tide"... Moments like this will always resonate. The only album the Batteaux brothers ever released, relatively rare and prone to bootlegs, this is the first official re-release in over five years and a great chance to catch up.

Review: By 1978, Tim Maia was safely nestling in the higher echelons of Brazilian music, thanks in no small part to a run of fine albums that put a homegrown twist on American soul and funk. His next move was to gather together some of Rio de Janeiro's finest musicians and record Disco Club, his first full-length to explore the celebratory rush of New York disco. As this official reissue proves, the album has lost none of its' over-the-top, orchestrated charm. It contains some seriously righteous dancefloor moments, from the punchy horn lines and jammed-out electric pianos of the hustling "Vitoria Regia Estou Contigo E Nao Abro", to the swirling, rising strings and typically Brazilian vocal harmonies of "Juras".

Review: Under the Chopstars alias, DJ Candlestick and OG Ron C have become famous for delivering pitched-down, chopped-and-screwed versions of albums by Drake and Little Dragon, amongst others. Now the Houston duo has given Thundercat's brilliant 2017 set Drunk the same treatment, and it may well be their finest work to date. Their method was simple: radically slow down each of the album tracks, add their own production touches and re-cast the notoriously eclectic album as a blazed, loved-up journey through smooth soul and '70s style "quiet storm" R&B. It's a relatively radical departure - in the case of some tracks, at the very least - but works magnificently well. Remarkably, it's almost as good as Thundercat's original - and that's saying something.

  8. Come To Me (3:56)
Review: He's Coming was the sole album released by Divinity, a gospel-fired vocal soul group masterminded by Lee Moore. In truth, the 1989 set has remained largely overlooked until now, despite the unfussy and occasionally inspired quality of its tracks. Happily, you can now judge the album for yourself thanks to this tasty reissue from Still Music's reissue-focused Past Due offshoot. It's in many ways typical of the soul scene at the time - albeit with a stronger gospel influence - meaning a mixture of slow jams and sing-alongs built on gentle drum machine beats, live bass and guitar, and the sort of chiming synthesizer melodies that were all the rage at the tail end of the '80s.

  7. Things & Do (5:18)
Review: Destination 1975: funk is leaning back limbo style to let disco flourish and the fourth LP from James Brown's clam-tight backing troupe is a fine example of just how the two styles flexed. Still heavy with the tight jams, big breaks and firing horn blow-outs but laced with a little disco shine and orchestration in places, it's a fine snapshot of the 70s headiest musical crossroads. The slippery guitars and slinky bass on "Taurus, Aires & Leo", the far-away jazzy textures of "Transmograpfication" and their own fly response to BT Express "The JB's Monaurail" are just some of the many highlights on this fusion-focused album.

Review: Kakashi is the latest in a long line of largely forgotten Yasuaki Shimizu albums and side projects to be given the reissue treatment. The album was originally released in Japan by Better Days back in 1981, and saw the jazz man-turned-ambient explorer join the dots between melodious, post-punk era jazz-fusion, new age influenced downtempo grooves, dub, ambient and eccentric, hard-to-pigeonhole experimentation. While musically diverse, the album hangs together beautifully. This is primarily down to two key factors: the ubiquity of Shimizu's evocative saxophone, flute and clarinet playing, and the richness of the multi-instrumentalist's superb production.
