Got To Get Your Love
Got To Get Your Love (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: PPR 015. Rel: 19 Jan 21
  1. Got To Get Your Love (Muro Diguma edit) (5:21)
  2. Got To Get Your Love (Muro Diguma edit - instrumental) (4:15)
Review: The latest set of Diguma Edits sees dusty-fingered Japanese digger-turned-re-editor DJ Muro take his scalpel to 'Got to Get Your Love' by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, a suspenseful and action-packed 1980 number from producers Peter Brown and Gary Davis. Muro first cuts down and compresses the ten-minute vocal version, making merry with the track's unusual combination of classic disco grooves, showtunes-style orchestration and eccentric vocals. Over on the flip he does a similar job on the slightly different instrumental take, in turns showcasing the track's crunchy guitars, warming electric pianos, spacey synths and grandiose orchestration.

Midnight In Havana (reissue)
Midnight In Havana (reissue) (white vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: OGR 799COLOUR. Rel: 04 Jan 21
  1. Midnight In Havana (5:18)
  2. Kinky Afro Cuban (4:53)
Review: Like all material released on Original Gravity, this tidy two-tracker from percussionist/band-leader Nestor Alvarezn and producer Neil Anderson sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago but is in fact brand new. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. A-side 'Midnight in Havana' is a heavyweight Afro-Cuban treat, with roaring horn lines and energetic organ lines leaping above a weighty, low-slung groove piled high with Latin percussion. The pair get cheeky on the flip, re-imagining Happy Mondays' classic 'Kinky Afro' in an easy listening salsa style, complete with bi-lingual lead vocals and sweltering trumpet solos.

Cat: LTR 001. Rel: 18 Dec 20
  1. Sanctify (4:03)
  2. Sanctify (T Groove Smooth mix) (4:14)
Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

Cat: KMPN 007. Rel: 18 Dec 20
  1. Hustle Do Brasil (Aroop Roy rework) (4:28)
  2. A Festa (Aroop Roy edit) (4:02)
Review: There's something special with these hush-hush reworks and re-edits as they breathe new life into dusty old Brazilian disco and boogie cuts. A-side 'Hustle Do Brazil' is a rambunctious, party-starting treat that turns a handful of loops from a piano-heavy South American disco record into a bouncy, disco-house slammer. He subtly switches tack on side B, delivering an edit of the deeper, smoother and jazzier 'A Festa', wisely prioritising his source material's spacey jazz-funk synths, heady party atmos, good grooves and even greater electric piano stabs. Samba-disco magic!

Jazz Carnival: Space Jazz mix (Global Communication remix) (remastered)
Cat: JD 047. Rel: 10 Dec 20
  1. Jazz Carnival (LP mix) (8:59)
  2. Jazz Carnival (Space Jazz mix - Global Communication remix) (11:15)
Review: We hear on the grapevine that there could be some seriously desirable Global Communication vinyl reissues on the way in 2020. To tide us over until then, Far Out has decided to reissue one of the legendary West Country duo's most celebrated and sought-after remixes: their 1996 "Space Jazz" remix of Azymuth classic "Jazz Carnival". Pritchard and Middleton's version is a spacey deep house epic of intergalactic proportions, with subtle elements of the Brazilian band's loose and languid '90s re-recording of the track (the B-side "LP Mix") weaving in and out of a warm, rich and hypnotic groove. It's one of the most dancefloor-friendly of all Global Communication remixes - many were straight ambient or downtempo rubs - but also one of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton's finest.

  2. No Nos Pararan (6:48)
Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Review: Foremost contemporary funk label Peoples Potential Unlimited have another golden 12" on their hands here thanks to the work of Barnikle Freee. He is the current designer for the label, someone who hoards software and makes expert glitch funk as well as being a multi-string bassist. As ever with this label, it is lo-fi, subtle sounds and frayed edges that define the EPs lovely aesthetic, with roughshod grooves, tumbling kicks and scatter perc all making you want to cut loose and boogie. Part dream-scape, part hazy late night session, part live set, it's all good.

Check It Out People (reissue)
Cat: SSR 218. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

  2. C-Pull - "Soulmate (John Beltran remix)" (6:10)
  3. John Beltran - "Summer Storm (Nigel Hayes remix)" (6:56)
Review: The pointedly deep Astrolife label, run by Nigel Hayes and Vincent Inc, is taking things way, way down with this stunning 12" from John Beltran. It's a varied affair that leads in with the sumptuous, percussive house pattering of Beltran's remix of Hayes and Rachel Berg's 'Take Me To The Sea'. It's the kind of track that will transport you to dreamy, sun-soaked terraces in a flash. Beltran's version of C-Pull's 'Soulmate' is a very different affair - a peppy broken beat groover that wouldn't sound out of place being worked by the likes of Kaidi Thatham or Dego. Then Hayes is back, this time remixing Beltran's 'Summer Storm' and giving it a chunky rhythm section to carry the hazy melodics into peak time.

  1. Best Friend Around - "It's So Good To Know" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:36)
  2. Foster Jackson Group - "Feel The Spirit" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:10)
Review: Given his reputation as Japan's "king of digging", you'll be unsurprised to learn that DJ Muro's latest scalpel-style Diguma Edits are of thoroughly obscure, hard-to-find disco cuts. For example, an original copy of Best Friend Around's hard to find modern soul-goes-disco number 'It's So Good to Know' - a warming and glassy-eyed cut full of hazy grooves, super-sweet vocals and spacey synth sounds - would cost you hundreds of pounds; Muro's shortened, light-touch edit seems a bargain at a fraction of the cost. Foaster Jackon Group's similarly rare 'Feel the Spirit', a carnival-ready slab of Brazilian influenced jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion, is given the Muro touch on the flip, with equally as exemplary results.

As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.

The first tune is produced by Bounce Castle from Chicago and is primed for the dance floor with its Bollywood-flavoured vibes and big beats. It's a fresh take on a big tune from QB's Finest. Unknown cut and paste masters are behind these two special editions, the first of which tackles Brother Soul's 'Cookies' and flips it into a driving funk tune with big, rousing horns and subtle funk riffs. Featuring mostly British and American artists the label now widens its net to serve up a pair of high impact tunes from their well-received Ciao Bella! Italian Girl Singers Of The 1960s compilation CD. Brunetta's 'Baluba Shake' has big and cavernous drums, plucked guitar riffs and rollicking great chords next to lung-busting vocals. 2. Agent 3 - "Secrets Below The Embassy" (4:43)
Review: There aren't many copies of this deep funk double header around, so we'd recommend moving sharpish if you want to get your hands on one. It boasts cuts from two significant contemporary U.S funk bands. Side is handled by BT ALC Big Band, whose Ropeadope-released set The Search For Peace was one of our favourite funk albums of 2019. Their contribution to this EP, 'The Iguana', is a rousing and righteous affair, with jazz style guitar and punchy sax solos rising above a heavy, Hammond-sporting funk groove. Equally as impressive is mystery outfit Agent 3's flipside cut 'Secrets Below The Embassy', a bustling future Hammond funk classic that boasts some of the gnarliest funk-rock guitar solos we've heard in some time.

Review: Burton Inc is perhaps not one of the better-known soul bands of the late 1970s. Formed by married couple Charles and Barbara Burton and featuring their son Tire amongst the backing musicians, the band recorded and released one album, 1976's L.A Will Make You Pay $$$, on their own private press imprint. It's from that set that these two tracks are taken. A-side 'Nation Song' is a glossy, slow-motion call for global unity featuring the twin attractions of incredible horn arrangements and spacey synthesizers (not to mention a fine lead vocal from Barbara), while flipside 'Groovin At The Night Club' is a slightly more up-tempo affair rich in jazzy guitar flourishes, fluid bass guitar and more incredible horn sounds.

Review: On the latest edition of their excellent Soul Essentials series, Outta Sight has decided to bring together two versions of 'Ordinary Joe', a seemingly perennial favourite written by the late, great Terry Callier. His celebrated 1972 recording - all bold, sing-along choruses, organ stabs, jangling piano and lolloping grooves - breezes its way across side A, while Jerry Butler's earlier version, laid to tape in 1970, sits on side B. His version is much more expansive and musically detailed than Callier's take, with superb production from Gamble & Huff and some brilliant orchestral arrangements courtesy of Donny Hathaway. Both versions are, or course, incredible.

Review: Straight out of Bristol comes a brand-new label from Tom Friend, the avuncular vinyl obsessive behind the Friendly Records store and bar. The inaugural release on Friendly Recordings fittingly comes from a local talent, promising newcomer Claude Cooper. What's on offer very much taps into Bristol's post-punk history, with excellent A-side 'Tangerine Dreams' sounding like the sax-wielding mutant offspring of Rip, Rig & Panic and Maximum Joy - all bold, rubbery double bass, frenetic breakbeats and delay-laden horn solos. B-side 'Two Mile Hill', which was named in honour of a road in Bristol near Cooper's house, offers an extra-percussive and moodier variation on a similar theme. In a word: terrific!

It was recorded just after French jazz fusion group Cortex's iconic Troupeau Bleu LP and is awash with gentle drum tumbles, twinkling keys and sustained strong sounds that bring a golden touch. The female vocal harmonies are a perfect counter for the male spoken words and the whole thing really tugs at the heart. Flip it over and there is the much more upbeat 'Back to Life' with its busy harmonica, funky drumming and rippling Rhodes work. Fantastic stuff.

Review: Charles Dickens Records makes its bow with a first record from Marvin Cotterell, a big lunged soul singer in whom the spirit of Northern Soul lives large. His first tune 'Try Walking In My Shoes' was written by Clive Scott and Ian Levine, the legendary Blackpool Mecca resident and pivotal Northern Soul DJ, so its credentials are unquestionable. 'Try Walking In My Shoes' is the attention grabbing a-side with its slick, high speed rhythm section and big horn stabs, but 'Midnight Shingaling' makes a more lasting impression - the Motown tambourines, the swinging drums, the constantly uplifting arrangement - it's an impossibly feel good tune that you cannot resist but dance to.

Review: This essential 45 brings together two hard-to-find cuts that have long been popular amongst rare groove dancers and dusty-fingered hip-hop DJs/beat-makers. On side A you'll find Cut Chemist fave 'Hey Joyce', a rare 1967 single from soul man Lou Courtney. Featuring a rasping, impassioned lead vocal from Courtney, sweet female backing vocals and the kind of semi-stomping beat that's so beloved by Northern Soul heads, it's a real must-have treat. Over on the flip you'll find Johnnie Taylor's more relaxed - but no less passionate - 'Just The One I've Been Looking For', a 1966 Stax B-side that remains a fine example of warming Southern Soul.

It has never been available as a single before and with the brass build and funky groove, it's irresistible. Review: He's hardly prolific, but DJ/producer Del Gazeebo has been offering up occasional re-edits, mash-ups and bootleg reworks for longer than some of us have been alive. Here he begins 2020 in fine fashion with two party-hearty reworks guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving. Aside "Barbara Don't Love Me" is a bouncy, subtly beefed-up take on a horn-heavy 1960s soul/rhythm and blues classic that sounds like it would go down well at parties that love Northern Soul. Flipside "Dat Ting" meanwhile is a head-nodding take on a punchy soulful reggae cut underpinned by weighty bass and tight hip-hop beats.

  2. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again (Like I Fell In Love With You) (Disco instrumental) (6:13)
Review: This record is a re-make of a Carmen Amez disco and boogie gem from 1983. The original goes for well over L200 and isn't even that good a pressing. This cover first saw the light of day as a 12" in September that was only acquired by certain DJs. It soon started trading for high prices as people wondered what the hell it was, who it was by, and whether it was a shifty bootleg. That's all resolved now as it gets a proper out with a freshly re-recorded version with strings, horns, bells, whistles and Vanessa Haynes on vocals. It's a lush bit of floor filling heart swelling disco, funk and soul gold with soaring strings to boot.

  1. Ode To Clyde (part 1) (4:03)
  2. Ode To Clyde (part 2) (3:42)
Review: For the latest hot-to-trot missive on his popular Soopastole Edits imprint, DJ Soopasoul has decided to pay tribute to funk's most sampled sticks-man, the late Clyde Stubblefield. Fittingly, he's chosen to do that by chopping up James Brown's 'Funky Drummer', whose much-sampled break was played by Stubblefield and has appeared on countless hip-hop cuts over the years. 'Ode to Clyde (Part 1)' naturally gives Stubblefield's break plenty of airtime, along with the song's hazy funk instrumentation and Brown's rasping lead vocal. Over on the flip Brown takes second billing to a spate of horn solos lifted from the legendary nine-minute version of 'Funky Drummer', with Stubblefield's incredible drumming providing constant dancefloor pressure.

Reggae Dynamite Vol 2
  1. Melbourne Douglas - "Rudy Skankin On The Moon" (3:14)
  2. The Regulators - "Caymanas Park Rocket" (2:30)
  3. Melbourne Douglas - "Rude Boy Don't Fight" (2:50)
  4. King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

Review: Edinburgh has long fancied itself as the Athens of the North, having gained a reputation since the 1700s as a centre for ideas in philosophy, economics and medicine. The Athens Of The North house band are back as East Coast Love Affair and their soulful and emotive deep disco version "Don't Be Afraid", a version of a super rare Disco 45" by Sky's The Limit, followed by a low slung and minimalistic afro house workout titled "Taken For Granted" on the flip.

Review: Emanative is an artist known for his love of collaborating with others. He has worked with Bex Burch during the lockdown and now this new EP is the meeting of those minds pressed to wax. Nick Emanative initially provided Bex with a hazy, 808 / African-inspired sketch and things were taken from there with a back and forth dialogue resulting in an afro tinged house groover with post punk-esque vocal, Ghanaian Gyil xylophone and synths and tape delay from Hector Plimmer. It makes for a fascinating pair of tunes.
