Review: It seems like we write about a great new compilation from French powerhouses Wagram every week. This is the latest and it takes aim at trip hop which is the niche sub-genre to emerge from the shadows of hip-hop, firstly in Bristol. This is an unashamed collection of what the label thinks are the biggest tunes and most classic joints from across the years all on one triple vinyl set. Some unpredictable inclusions are the likes of Radiohead's otherworldly hymn 'Everything In Its Right Place' amongst standouts like Snooze's 'The Chase' (Revisited By Fila Brazilia).

Review: French label Wagram is a go-to when it comes to quality compilations that take a broad look at certain sounds and scenes, and this one is an on-going series that focuses on house sounds with an Afro undertone. The grooves are lively and often come with plenty of percussion. The drums hit hard but with funk, the vocals are Afro-centric and plenty of irresistible hits come thick and fast from the jazzy tribal swagger of 'Imbalaye' to the big steel drum party sounds of 'Viet Dao' (Klement Bonelli & Yann DL remix). Another great collection of colourful Afro house sounds.

Review: Whether you can treat funk itself as a form of personal property is truly up for debate, but 'Give Me The Funk!', the new compilation courtesy of Wagram, certainly gives the above a try. The new comp flaunts 12 classic funk songs that have mainly drawn their charm as a result of having been sampled by prominent hip-hop artists and producers over the years. The likes of B.T. Express, Silver Convention, Instant Funk, The Soul Searchers, Taana Gardner, Clarence Reid, Southside Movement, Detroit Emeralds, and Johnny Guitar Watson appear across its two five-track sides, flaunting the many breaks and riffs that have gone on to inspire generations of lovers of the dance.

Review: A new week means yet another new compilation from Wagram. The French label has become expert at myriad different genres from staples like house and techno to more esoteric world genre niches. This time out they launch a new series that looks into the rich sounds of Afrobeat, first pioneered by the likes of Fela Kuti and his drummer Tony Allen. Neither of them feature here but the four sides of tunes we do get all make for a deep dive into this compelling rhythmical music.

Review: Wagram has been busy putting together all sorts of authoritative collections on various different genres over the years. Next up the French label sets its sights to trip-hop - a distinctly British sound that emerged in the 90s quite specifically from Bristol and artists like Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead. None of those pivotal names actually feature, weirdly, but there is still a wealth of love downtempo goodness here from the likes of Manchester's Mr Scruff, world music don Bonobo, disco divas Moloko and musical maestros Quantic and Thievery Corporation. It takes for a top listen.

Next in their headlights is this, a look at Protest Songs: Rare Soul Funk Tunes from the Civil Rights Era across four sides of vinyl. What else could it possible open with than Gil Scott-Heron's 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised'? From there, the socially-political astute commentaries come think and fast in funky form from the likes of H Rap Brown, the gorgeous tones of the The Whatnauts and Young Holt Unlimited amongst many more.

Review: We love it when French label Wagram puts out another compilation because they are invariably excellent and can every much make your record collection and therefore digging credentials seem maybe a touch better than they are without doing much work yourself. This one, after loads that have focussed on everything form techno to soul to protest songs, is simply called Groove Diggin. It is another sublime los at some red hot and impassioned soul sounds put together with love by some serious diggers. Cortex, The Heads of the Family and more all feature.
