Review: Labels don't come much bigger or better than Numero when it cones to sounds like folk. This third volume in their Mid Atlantic Story series is another one for the armchair drag racers, lowrider and souleros that pays tribute to the sounds that came after soul. It's inspiration comes from the record industry's "metric trunkload of cruising compilations" - some of which were legit, many of which were not - that soundtracked an entire subculture. Sounds from the greater bay region and those from the east side all feature here with artists like Father's Children, Jato von Del and The Positive Sounds.

As always there is an in-depth exploration of black and brown American artists here who are the foundations of the sound. Most of those featured will be obscure to many - but not for long, as their music makes a lasting impression. Review: Cairo Records have been serving up a whole host of compilations that focus on great American soul music across several specific eras. This double album, which includes a booklet featuring lots of great context, delves into the music of the mid fifties and on to the early seventies, or 1955-1972 to be exact. As such it is raw and passionate material, often with a lo-fi edge and fuzzy warmth to its from the driving headache of Lee Moses's opening two to gems from the likes of Baby Huey and gorgeous slow motion soul like Betty Lavette's 'Let Me Down Easy'.

Review: The title of this one very much gives away what Numero's latest album is all about. It is a carefully curated of 17 superb gems from across the Northern Soul spectrum. Each of these tunes has its own unique character but they are united by the fact that they will all get the dancefloor rocking. As you would expect they are Motown-inspired but also full of freshness and plenty of them have signature British flair to the swinging grooves. Add in big strings, bigger vocals, driving beats and it's about the only Northern Soul record fans old or new need to get them going.

These are 'originally unreleased tracks' which kick off with a brace from Bobby Bland and his guttural, raw vocals. Etta James then features with the Chicago sounds of 'I Never Meant To Love Him' from a Philly session recorded with Bobby Martin, and two other gems before the mysterious Fontella Bass keeps it heartwrenching with 'Joy Of Love.' Review: Two years ago, Volcov set our pulses racing with From The Archive, a superb selection of killer cuts from the depth of his notoriously impressive record collection. Review: Some two years after helping launch Favorite Recordings' reissue-focused SOL Discos imprint, label co-founder Waxist returns with a second volume of "Message In Our Music", a compilation focused - like its' predecessor - on little known "modern soul" from the late 1970s and early '80s.
