Tune Up Ska (reissue)
  1. Tune Up Ska (3:16)
  2. Time Is Ska Tight (Aternative take) (3:53)
Review: While this record looks and sounds vintage - like the majority of Original Gravity's output - it is in fact a revivalist, turn-of-the-60s style ska production from Welwyn Garden City's Neil Anderson. A-side 'Tune Up Ska' is particularly potent, with Anderson and his studio musicians serving up a classic ska groove (think walking bass, up-tempo rhythm and blues drums and tight horn blasts), onto which a variety of fuzzy saxophone and organ solos are layered. Clubs may not be open right now, but when they do, we can see it lighting up ska-loving crowds. Over on the flip, Anderson and company turn their attention (sorry) to Booker T & The MG's cut 'Time is Tight', reinventing it as a boisterous, horn-heavy affair featuring some superb trumpet solos.

  1. Boogie (4:52)
  2. You've Just Been Bitten (5:23)
Review: Dynamite Cuts is in a real purple patch right now and keeping that up for the London label is John Barelt. Here, two cuts of his previously released on the Perception label get a first ever 7" vinyl pressing. They come from his hard to find and eponymously entitled album from 1971 and are packed with classic and unknown drum samples. First up is 'Boogie', a steamy number with fantastic Rhodes chords in the background while busy guitar riffs vie for attention up front. The rhythm section flows as smooth as silk and make this a seductive number indeed. On the reverse, 'You've Just Been Bitten' is a vocal cut that teases and pleases.

Review: The first Premier League Pressing features one of the best known tracks in popular culture. The Belmont Shadows beef up an acapella version of 'Kiss Him Goodbye' where you'll hear the drummer get wicked over cuts and beats from one of the top DJs of the west coast. On the flip, we have a tough breakbeat-heavy Latin version by Wilson D N that has never been on a 45.

Review: One of the baddest to ever do it, American Big Daddy Kane has an arsenal of gems in his back cat. This one came in 1987 and is one of his many classic tracks, now available on Prism Records. It's a perfect old school sound complete with mad DJ scratches, squealing horn sounds and dusty breaks for the b-boys. The rap work is impassioned, with articulate delivery hitting hard. Flip it over and you will be treated to a never before released instrumental that is also well worth adding to the collection.

Review: This essential compilation from Africa Seven does a terrific job in highlighting the genuinely unique, dancefloor-focused music recorded by Cameroonian musician Joe Bisso following his move to the United States in the early 1970s. Often heavily percussive, the 14 tracks combine elements of Congolese rumba, Afrobeat and Afro-funk with James Brown style heavy funk and the then emerging sound of underground NYC disco. Highlights are plentiful, from the Moog-laden, Latin-tinged-disco flavours of 'Disco Madonna' and the flash-fried disco-funk extravaganza that is 'Don't Fight The Feeling', to the solo-laden heaviness of Afro-disco banger 'Midnight' and the breathy, seductive goodness of 'Your Love (Part 1)'.

They take care of the a-side of this red hot release from Funk Night with 'Flowman Break', a bubbling, loose limbed funk bumper that is full flavour and full of playful funk. Tatasomba's 'Kaleidoscope' is a little more paired back and coy, with a conversational bassline and jangling cow bells that keep you on the move.

many dance music genres, as well as being essential in their own right. His latest project is this collection of 45s which have all been put out separately over the year. Also included are two brand new tunes and as ever the multi-instrumentalist and producer really flexes his muscle from front to back. There are big horns, strident groves and crisp boom bap beats with guests MCs such as Craig G, Ash The Author and vocalists such as Swaby from The Heavy all adding their own weight to the project.

  1. Pop Corn (2:53)
  2. Granny Scratch Scratch (3:58)
Review: Contemporary Hammond B3 maestro Booker Gee (real name Guillaume Metenier) has delivered some seriously good slabs over the last couple of years, and this wholehearted tribute to the JB's could well be the best of the lot. 'Popcorn' is a sparse but seriously heavy deep funk cut, with Metenier's inspired Hammond licks and solos riding a sweaty, break-fuelled groove courtesy of acclaimed modern funk multi-instrumentalist Slikk Tim. Over on the flip, the French musician and producer gives his interpretation of Sound Dimension's 'Granny Snatch', delivering a cosmic funk take full of weighty bass, flanged guitars, jazzy solos and deliciously dubbed-out sounds. It's not quite as instantly accessible as 'Popcorn', but it is certainly equally as potent.

  2. Out In The Rain (version) (3:55)
Review: Guillaume Metenier is Booker Gee, a master edit maker and studio wizard who has made his name with some much wanted work on Lucien Entertainment as well as more than once on this label. His second release this month is a trip into the world of ska. 'Out In The Rain' is a perfect sweet spot between rolling reggae rhythms, warm organ chords and skipping kicks. The mood is sensuous and inviting as Gee blends sweet soul with playful funk. The version is only a subtle rework, resining plenty of the charm and allure of the original.

  4. Faith (dub) (3:49)
Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

Once again finding new ways to collide hard rock and West African funk, first up is 'Come Inside', which has been a firm favourite in his live shows and is a collaboration with bassist JP Maramba that's full of fierce energy. Reeves it and you'll get a psyched out cover of Fela Kuti's 'Sorrow Tears & Blood' with a hooky groovy and powerful underlying message.

Review: Over the last couple of years, Matasuna Records has developed a tried-and-tested formula. It revolves around finding and licensing killer cuts - think funk, Afrobeat, tropical flavours and Latin beats - and then pairing them with a fresh, floor-friendly re-edit. Their latest find is something of an overlooked gem: a gorgeously sunny 1983 number from Ghanaian musician Mawuli Decker that's piled high with infectious, EWE-language vocals, Highlife guitars, spacey Moog sounds and cute electric piano solos. The accompanying Renegades of Jazz re-edit is pleasingly faithful to its source material, deftly showcasing Decker's brilliant music while beefing up the bass, subtly tightening up the drums and layering on some complimentary hand percussion.

Cat: 451056. Rel: 26 Nov 20
  1. Sirocco (3:17)
  2. Nymphea (3:13)
Review: This year, Russian outfit the Diasonics have delivered a swathe of seven-inch singles, each of which acts as a showcase for their unique "Hussar funk" sound - an "outernational" style blend of deep funk grooves, psych-funk flourishes and melodic refrains that draw on their native Eastern European musical culture. They're at it again on their first Mocambo outing, which opens with the stunning strains of 'Sirocco', where Pierre Henry style synth motifs and decidedly Russian melodies rise above booming bass guitar, crunchy drum grooves and surprisingly creepy jazz guitars. Turn to side B for the slightly bolder and arguably even creepier 'Nymphea', another solid slab of quirky deep funk that should appeal to those who like eccentric 1970s library music and unusual musical mutations.

If that sets your bells jingling (sorry), we'd suggest diving straight into A-side 'Merry Christmas', a veritable yuletide feast of boisterous drum-breaks, gravelly guitar riffs, rising horns and sleigh bells, all topped off by a few choice samples and another superb lead vocal from Luana. The pair continue on a similar tip on flipside 'Santa's Coming', a funk-breaks masterclass dedicated to the jolly, chimney-bothering present delivery guy. Review: Some compilations manage to both educate, inform and educate in equal measure; this fine collection from Japanese crate diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite and Chintam is one such set. Comprising mostly little-known tracks recorded by Japanese artists between 1968 and '70, it offers up a wealth of cuts inspired by American jazz-funk "rare groove". There's much to admire across the ten tracks, from the mazy Rhodes solos, fizzing big band jazz grooves and traditional Eastern instrumentation of Toshiko Yonekawa's "Soran Bushi", and the languidly-slung brilliance of Tadaki Misago and Tokyo Cuban Boys' multi-faceted musical fusion "Jongara Reggae", to the Jimi Hendrix-goes-funk heaviness of "Incitation" by Monica Lassen & The Sounds, and the drums-driven dancefloor madness of Masahiko Sato Jiro Inagaki & Big Soul Media's "Sniper's Snooze". Recommended.

  2. Beats Working (2:45)
  3. Drums Working (bonus Beat) (0:50)
Review: Dr Rubberfunk's sound has become more reliant on organic instrumentation over the years, but at heart he's still a turntablist with a love of Steinski and Coldcut style cut-and-paste productions. So while his recent My Life in 45 album was a kaleidoscopic musical smorgasbord of sounds, this follow-up single is a much more back-to-basics banger tailor-made for excitable DJs and even more excited breakdancers. 'Come Back Breaker' is a rolling, fun-fuelled number in which a plethora of quirky spoken word snippets and cut-up, energy-packed drum-breaks vie for attention with warm bass and guitar sounds seemingly lifted from old funk and soul jams. He continues this approach on the more jazz-funk influenced workout 'Beats Working', before showcasing his sweaty breaks on the short, DJ-friendly rhythm track 'Drums Working'.

Review: The Dynamite Cuts crew serve up another scorching 45 here with two legends taking one side a piece. Both of these tracks are making their first ever appearance on vinyl here, the first being by the funk pioneers The Fatback Band. Their 'Fatbackin' is a rare groove classic that has long got b-boy's excited and brims with energy. It's a massive tune that has been sampled endlessly by the hip-hop world and has a sweet jazz-funk groove that'll make you move.

Tropical Pressure Vol 1

  3. Guided Souls - "Freedoms Light" (4:48)
  4. Orchestre Les Mangelepa - "Kanemo" (No Nation dub) (5:33)
Review: The cursed global pandemic may have put paid to this year's Tropical Pressure festival in Cornwall, but thanks to this first compilation style EP from its' new offshoot label, we can now recreate the event's humid, colourful musical vibe in our own homes. The selections are naturally top-drawer, with the heavy tropical Afro-funk of Guy One's EP-opening 'Bangarre Tomme' brilliantly setting the tone. Faith Mussa impresses with the deliciously positive and sun-kissed 'Ngoma' - all rubbery bass, JuJu style guitars and bouncy beats - while Guided Souls get hot and heavy on the raw and fuzzy Afro-house of 'Freedoms Light'. We'd also recommend checking out the 'No Nations Dub' of 'Kameno' by No Nations Orchestra, a sun-bright slab of audio sunshine rich in glistening guitars and punchy horns.

Review: Another 5 Boroughs Breaks release means another gold standard hip-hop banger. This one is from
The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. The rhymes flow smooth and the samples are sweet. Flip it over and you'll find where they come from - a rare library music tune by Simon Haseley called 'Hammerhead.' It's a 60s gem with harps, horns and serene strings that make for a luxuriant sound.

How Long Do I Have To Wait For You?
Cat: DAP 1020. Rel: 11 Nov 20
  1. How Long Do I Have To Wait For You? (vocal mix) (4:03)
  2. How Long Do I Have To Wait For You? (instrumental) (2:58)
Review: Remarkably, 16 years have passed since Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings first released 'How Long Do I Have To Wait', one of the revivalist soul and funk band's sweetest and most heartfelt songs. Written and produced by Dap-Kings main man Bosco Mann, the song features one of Jones' most evocative and impassioned lead vocals, as well as a pleasingly laidback, loose-limbed groove, jazzy guitars and pitch-perfect horn blasts. As it did back in 2004, this reissue pairs the peerless vocal version with Mann's typically fuzzy, lovingly crafted instrumental take. If you missed out first time round, make sure you grab a copy.

What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?
Cat: DAP 1019. Rel: 11 Nov 20
  1. What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes? (4:40)
  2. This Land Is Your Land (4:28)
Review: Daptone recently released a killer collection of archival cover versions by in-house band the Dap-Kings and their sadly departed lead singer Sharon Jones. One of the headline attractions on that set, the band's righteous, call-to-arms soul version of Woody Guthrie's folk anthem 'This Land Is Our Land', is also featured on this must-have reissue of a "45" that first dropped in 2004. It's superb, but even better is A-side 'What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?', a floor-friendly conscious soul/funk crossover written and recorded at the height of the second Gulf War with Iraq. As usual, Jones' impeccable lead vocal is supported brilliantly by the band's fiery instrumentation and Bosco Mann's fuzzy, sixties-style production.
