Get Yourself Some
Cat: JAL 333V. Rel: 01 Oct 20
  1. Get Yourself Some (2:55)
  2. I'm On It (feat Dr Syntax & Skunkadelic) (3:11)
Review: Jalepeno continues to offer-up must-have singles from the Allergies most recent - and, in our view, most impressive - album, Say The Word. This double A-side "45" features two of that set's most impactful cuts. On the A-side you'll find 'Get Yourself Some', a bustling vocal funk workout laden with gnarly funk-rock guitars, punchy horn blasts, bluesy harmonica motifs and wild Hammond organ licks. On the reverse, mic men Dr Syntax and Skunkadelic lend a hand on 'I'm On It', where the pair's deep-throated raps ride an Incredible Bongo Band style groove punctuated with jaunty sax lines and heavy organ riffs.

Tune Up Ska (reissue)
  1. Tune Up Ska (3:16)
  2. Time Is Ska Tight (Aternative take) (3:53)
Review: While this record looks and sounds vintage - like the majority of Original Gravity's output - it is in fact a revivalist, turn-of-the-60s style ska production from Welwyn Garden City's Neil Anderson. A-side 'Tune Up Ska' is particularly potent, with Anderson and his studio musicians serving up a classic ska groove (think walking bass, up-tempo rhythm and blues drums and tight horn blasts), onto which a variety of fuzzy saxophone and organ solos are layered. Clubs may not be open right now, but when they do, we can see it lighting up ska-loving crowds. Over on the flip, Anderson and company turn their attention (sorry) to Booker T & The MG's cut 'Time is Tight', reinventing it as a boisterous, horn-heavy affair featuring some superb trumpet solos.

As Curvas Da Estrada De Santos
Cat: JD 49. Rel: 29 Sep 20
  1. As Curvas Da Estrada De Santos (5:50)
  2. Ze E Parana (4:09)
Review: Far Out Recordings have singled-handedly made 70s fusionists Azymuth one of the most acclaimed bands of the modern era, with high profile headlines sets at cult festivals around Europe and an endless stream of quick to sell out records. Now they shine more light on the virtuosos instrumentalists with this 7" featuring two more home-recorded demo tracks. Jazz, funk, psched out sounds and rich Moog bass make these some for heir more mind expanding cuts. The a-side is actually a take on an iconic pop song from the 60s by Jovem Guarda, and the reverse is a weird space oddity for hardcore cosmic adventurers.

Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

Review: Dynamite Cuts is in a real purple patch right now and keeping that up for the London label is John Barelt. Here, two cuts of his previously released on the Perception label get a first ever 7" vinyl pressing. They come from his hard to find and eponymously entitled album from 1971 and are packed with classic and unknown drum samples. First up is 'Boogie', a steamy number with fantastic Rhodes chords in the background while busy guitar riffs vie for attention up front. The rhythm section flows as smooth as silk and make this a seductive number indeed. On the reverse, 'You've Just Been Bitten' is a vocal cut that teases and pleases.

  3. 3 Days Man! (Peewee Ferris & John Ferris extended mix) (5:55)
Review: While Andrew Weatherall was pioneering an indie dance cross over with Screamadelica, at the same town way down under in Aus, Sydney dance-funk combo Bellydance laid down their own blueprint. Mixing up street soul, funk and disco they were a collective featuring up to nine members and their best moment was this archetype end of the night send off. The glorious original is a high speed rollercoaster, the No People mix is a sax laced instrumental and the Peewee Ferris & John Ferris Verizon that closes out is a real joy with the chipmunk vocals and hands in the air pianos.

Review: The first Premier League Pressing features one of the best known tracks in popular culture. The Belmont Shadows beef up an acapella version of 'Kiss Him Goodbye' where you'll hear the drummer get wicked over cuts and beats from one of the top DJs of the west coast. On the flip, we have a tough breakbeat-heavy Latin version by Wilson D N that has never been on a 45.

  1. Jorge Ben - "Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)" (4:09)
  2. Cauby Peixoto & Jorge Ben - "Dona Culpa" (3:25)
Review: Mr Bongo's excellent Brazil.45 series digs deeper into the legacy of Jorge Ben, one of Brazil's most famous musical exports and an enduring samba king. Opening up is 'Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)' which was originally on his 1980 album Alo Alo, Como Vai? It's a modern sound, with disco inflections and big wind sections, but also some trademark Ben playfulness in the lyrics which speak of flying saucers and angels. O the flip, things slow down and get more steamy and sensuous on 'Dona Culpa' from his Cauby! Cauby!' album of the same year. Two sides, two styles, one irrepressible artist.

Cat: FNR 142. Rel: 19 Oct 20
  1. Afro Cookie (Slofat version) (4:26)
  2. Psych Afrofunk (1:56)
Review: Funk Night Records continues to offer up new slabs of fabulously fuzzy funk from The Blassics, a nine-piece outfit from Finland that has been operative for the best part of a decade. Remarkably, this is the band's fifth single this year. On the A-side you'll find the "Slofat Version" of their tribute to the polyrhythmic percussion, raw bass and dancing horns of Afro-funk, which is aptly named 'Afro Cookie'. It's a chunky musical biscuit that looks set to energise dancefloors with its sugary delights every time it's dropped. Despite its title, flipside 'Psych Afro Funk' is not that psychedelic; it is, though a rather fine and pleasingly laidback ramble through the more relaxed end of the Afro-funk spectrum.

Cat: FNR 143. Rel: 19 Oct 20
  1. The Blassics - "Silver Mercury" (3:41)
  2. Broaks - "Her Ability To Transform" (4:21)
Review: For their latest 45 missive, Funk Night Records has decided to offer-up a double-header of fresh instrumental funk from two Scandinavian combos. The A-side features Finnish scene stalwarts The Blassics, whose 'Silver Mercury' offers a fiendishly fuzzy mix of low-slung drum-breaks, clipped guitar riffs and all manner of tipsy horn solos. Fellow Scandi-funk outfit Broaks take over on side B, building on the smoky, seductive sound of their recent self-titled debut album. 'Her Ability to Transform' is a weighty but sparse and stripped-back trip into hip-hop influenced Afro-funk territory that comes laden with drunken horn blasts, Tony Allen style drumming and some nimble, subtle turntablism.

Review: The Blassics is a multi-member collective known for the excellent blend of jazz, funk, afro and soul across a series of standout records over the last decade. They take care of the a-side of this red hot release from Funk Night with 'Flowman Break', a bubbling, loose limbed funk bumper that is full flavour and full of playful funk. Tatasomba's 'Kaleidoscope' is a little more paired back and coy, with a conversational bassline and jangling cow bells that keep you on the move.

Review: Guillaume Metenier is Booker Gee, a master edit maker and studio wizard who has made his name with some much wanted work on Lucien Entertainment as well as more than once on this label. His second release this month is a trip into the world of ska. 'Out In The Rain' is a perfect sweet spot between rolling reggae rhythms, warm organ chords and skipping kicks. The mood is sensuous and inviting as Gee blends sweet soul with playful funk. The version is only a subtle rework, resining plenty of the charm and allure of the original.

Review: Dynamite Cuts latest double seven-inch presentation takes us back to 1973, and James Brown's often-overlooked soundtrack to Blaxploitation crime movie "Black Ceasar", a set previously described by one critic as "a full-frontal funk attack". What we get is four of the soundtrack's strongest cuts: electric piano solo-laden funk shuffler "Blind Man Can See", one of Brown's most celebrated and best-loved songs, "The Boss" (sample lyric: "look at me, what do you see? A bad mother!"), the softly sweet, strings-and-solo laden breeziness of "White Lightning", and the crunchy heavy funk strut of "Make It Good To Yourself". As the old saying goes: all killer, no filler.

  1. Hot Lovin' (Don't Stop, Don't Quit) (3:39)
  2. Shack Attack (3:20)
Review: More from the cheeky scamps behind the Disco Bits label, an imprint whose releases regularly blur the boundaries between re-editing, re-making and remixing. Here they welcome back imprint regulars Cannon & Mirrorball (we laughed, at least), who once again serve up two guaranteed disco floor-slayers. A-side 'Hot Lovin (Don't Stop, Don't Quit)' sits somewhere between disco-house and hip-house, with excitement-building raps lifted from vintage hip-hop cuts sitting atop a non-stop beat crafted from tooled-up elements from a celebratory disco favourite. As the title suggests, 'Shack Attack' cheekily blends elements from Banbarra classic 'Shack Up' and B-52s hit 'Love Shack', adding some other choice samples to create a tidy, well-made mash-up that sounds tailor-made for disco dancefloors.

  1. Big Jim Cartwright - "Stone Born Country Boy" (2:49)
  2. Big Jim - "Stone Born Country Boy" (3:02)
Review: There's not an awful lot of information about Perfect Toy's latest killer funk reissue, which appears to gather together two different recordings of 'Big' Jim Cartwright's sole single, 'Stone Born Country Boy'. At least two original pressings of the obscure, extremely hard-to-find single exist, with Cartwright recording slightly different versions each time. On this essential reissue, the (probably later) A-side version is the superior recording; tighter, heavier and blessed with female backing vocals, it's a fiery chunk of country funk from the point when the style was starting to diverge from rhythm and blues. The marginally longer flipside take is most likely an earlier recording; fuzzier and more raucous, it is closer in tone to purist rhythm and blues.

Cat: P 111. Rel: 02 Oct 20
  1. Atmosphere Strut (12" club mix) (9:21)
  2. Atmosphere Strut (Kon's Fly Away edit) (8:38)
Review: Patrick Adams was responsible for producing tons of terrific disco records during the late 1970s and early '80s, but few are quite as dizzyingly good as Cloud One's 1976 cut 'Atmosphere Strut'. Created by Adams with the assistance of regular collaborator Peter Brown, the 9-minute plus track is notable for the extensive use of superbly spacey synthesizer lines, an infectious deep disco groove and a typically head-in-the-clouds lead vocal from Margo Williams. This reissue naturally offers-up Adams' original, must-have 12" club mix, but also a brand-new re-edit from disco rework specialist KON. He lengthens the intro, beefs up the bass and makes crafty use of some improvised vocals from Adams and Williams that were previously buried on the multi-track master tapes.

  1. The Man (3:22)

Review: Stetasonic was a short lived American hip-hop group who managed to put out three strong albums in their short time together. It was a remix of their 'Talking All That Jazz' by Dimitri From Paris that resurrected interest in the group in 1998 and now this 7" continues to shine a light on the often forgotten group. '(Now Ya'll Givin' Up) Love' is a hard hitting beat with a tense atmosphere. The crashing hits and reverberating drums break only for big stabs to light up the groove, all the while the biting rhymes keep on coming. An a cappella is provide don the flip for more adventurous DJs.

Review: Over the last couple of years, Matasuna Records has developed a tried-and-tested formula. It revolves around finding and licensing killer cuts - think funk, Afrobeat, tropical flavours and Latin beats - and then pairing them with a fresh, floor-friendly re-edit. Their latest find is something of an overlooked gem: a gorgeously sunny 1983 number from Ghanaian musician Mawuli Decker that's piled high with infectious, EWE-language vocals, Highlife guitars, spacey Moog sounds and cute electric piano solos. The accompanying Renegades of Jazz re-edit is pleasingly faithful to its source material, deftly showcasing Decker's brilliant music while beefing up the bass, subtly tightening up the drums and layering on some complimentary hand percussion.

Review: Handsome Boy Modeling School is an American duo made up of hip-hop beatmakers Dan the Automator of Gorillaz association and rince Paul from projects with Stetsasonic, De La Soul and Gravediggaz. Dan the Automator assumes his DJ Octagon Palais for the opera here - a hard hitting and deep cut rap with plenty of manic DJ scratching and big stabs. Side A is DJ Suro a re-work of Patti Drew's 1968 version of 'Hard to Handle' that has big brass sounds, low slung bass and a fine soul vocal scoring to real heights. If that sets your bells jingling (sorry), we'd suggest diving straight into A-side 'Merry Christmas', a veritable yuletide feast of boisterous drum-breaks, gravelly guitar riffs, rising horns and sleigh bells, all topped off by a few choice samples and another superb lead vocal from Luana. Review: Dr Rubberfunk's sound has become more reliant on organic instrumentation over the years, but at heart he's still a turntablist with a love of Steinski and Coldcut style cut-and-paste productions. So while his recent My Life in 45 album was a kaleidoscopic musical smorgasbord of sounds, this follow-up single is a much more back-to-basics banger tailor-made for excitable DJs and even more excited breakdancers. 'Come Back Breaker' is a rolling, fun-fuelled number in which a plethora of quirky spoken word snippets and cut-up, energy-packed drum-breaks vie for attention with warm bass and guitar sounds seemingly lifted from old funk and soul jams. He continues this approach on the more jazz-funk influenced workout 'Beats Working', before showcasing his sweaty breaks on the short, DJ-friendly rhythm track 'Drums Working'.

  1. Funny Feeling (3:28)
  2. Shake Your Body (At The Disco) (2:54)
Review: Athens of the North has barely put a foot wrong of late, but even by their high standards the label's latest 45 is rather special. It sees them flip a thoroughly obscure modern soul seven-inch originally released in 1980 on a "tiny local label" in the U.S called Shore Records. It was, and remains, the sole release by the mysterious E.S Funk. A-side 'Funny Feeling' offers a delicious fusion of floor-friendly grooves - check, in particular, the crunchy, snare-heavy beat - immaculately played and produced instrumentation and a catchy chorus. 'Shake Your Body (At The Disco)' is an altogether funkier, club-focused affair whose most prominent features are a rubbery slap-bass line, dancer-friendly drum-breaks and horn and synth lines that seem to be playfully sparring with each other.

Review: Earlier in the year, rare and unissued soul specialists Cordial Recordings offered up a fine album of previously unreleased recordings by Family of Swede, an obscure Oakland, California-based band who were briefly active in the mid 1970s. The label has now decided to follow this up by releasing the full, near 12-minute recording of album highlight 'Set Me Free', a deliciously spacey, slow-motion cosmic soul number that sounds like a Californian stoner's take on some of Cymande's most laidback and intergalactic work. It's rather brilliant all told, as is flipside opener 'Mellow', a synth-laden trip through up-tempo space-funk territory that's as infectious as Covid 19 at a student house party. 'Life', a funky slab of blue-eyed soul brilliance, completes a must-have EP.

  1. The Fatback Band - "Fatbackin'" (3:31)
  2. Dizzy Gillespie - "Matrix" (4:06)
Review: The Dynamite Cuts crew serve up another scorching 45 here with two legends taking one side a piece. Both of these tracks are making their first ever appearance on vinyl here, the first being by the funk pioneers The Fatback Band. Their 'Fatbackin' is a rare groove classic that has long got b-boy's excited and brims with energy. Flip it over and you'll find 'Matrix' by jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie - famous for his humungous cheeks once he starts playing. It's a massive tune that has been sampled endlessly by the hip-hop world and has a sweet jazz-funk groove that'll make you move.

Slow Down
Slow Down (7")
Cat: MA 005. Rel: 14 Oct 20
  1. Slow Down (4:14)
  2. I Deserve A Little Bit More (4:34)
Review: Miles Away are always on a mission to unearth new old gems. Their tireless work now gives rise to a pair of big hitters from The Grooms, a band who only ever flashed this one single back in the 1970s. It came originally on a little-known label in Norfolk, VA headed up by Noah H. Biggs, called Shiptown, and was during the peak era of Motown, Atlantic and Stax. Thankfully the label boss saw its potential. The super charged 'Slow Down' on the A side is wrought with emotion and on the reverse is a more moody and heartfelt ballad called 'I Deserve A Little Bit More.'

Review: Standby for some read hot early 70s North Soul goodness on this vital Quentin Harris reissue. The 7" was first put out as a private press and its two tracks were recorded after Harris released his Statements album. This is the first ever vinyl reissue and is super limited to just 250 copies. 'Protect Me From Myself' rides a deep cut groove with silky bass and has big horn stabs next to some soul stirring vocal work. 'I'll Always Love You' on the flip then strips things further back to a heartbreaking soul sound with twirling stings and warm horns, lush backing vocals a sing along chords that will melt even the blackest of characters.

  1. The High & Mighty - "Dirty Decibels" (3:57)
  2. Simon Haseley - "Hammerhead" (4:33)
Review: Another 5 Boroughs Breaks release means another gold standard hip-hop banger. This one is from
The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. The rhymes flow smooth and the samples are sweet. Flip it over and you'll find where they come from - a rare library music tune by Simon Haseley called 'Hammerhead.' It's a 60s gem with harps, horns and serene strings that make for a luxuriant sound.
