The track is now getting a vinyl reissue 12 years later, thanks to JalapeNo Records. On the flip, you have got another classic from their back catalogue in the form of 'Higher' taken from the Eccentric Audio album and it is arguably their most slept on track, or, what they would probably best describe themselves as "North East Ghetto Soul".

Review: Sndtrak has been doing some audacious cut ups over the years, and his flips: Triple Lindy LP made that abundantly clear when it landed earlier this year. It was a lot to digest, so he's opted to pick six of the hottest joints and squeeze them onto this razor-sharp 7". No source material is too classic to be chopped and mutated with his seriously funky touch, whether it's Queen, Rick James or Tom Tom Club getting the treatment. Taking iconic grooves and giving them a sloppy shuffle, he ekes out some utterly insane grooves from these perennial hits and makes them sound like you've never heard before. If you want to please the crowd and bust their minds open in the same beat, this is your weapon of choice.

Review: Brazillian Yoruba artist Eduardo Brecho has been snapped up for this new series and limited run of 7"s on Barbershop Records. It features a pair of classic remakes starting with the cult Fela Kuti tune 'Water Get No Enemy.' His version is an uptempo take in which he sings purely in Yoruba and it is beautiful to hear. London poet Juno then joins in on the flip as the pair remake Gil Scott Heron's 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised'. It is a well-worn classic by now but takes on new charms in this sublime version.

Review: Random Rap Records offshoot Dinked 45 has hit gold with 'Happy (Hammond)', the first single in seven years from Chris Read and keyboardist Rob Barron's occasional So Much Soul Players project. As the title suggests, it's a cheeky and cheery Hammond funk reinvention of Pharrell Williams' classic which features Barron playing the famous melody - alongside a few wild solos - atop a sweaty, bass-heavy, breakbeat-driven dancefloor groove. It's a simple idea brilliantly executed all told and a guaranteed party-starter to boot. Over on the flip you'll find a slightly tougher, shorter 'Instrimental Mix' that cuts down the use of the melody in favour of elongated Hammond chords and more prominent beats, as well as a short 'Bonus Beats' drum track for DJs who like to get busy in the mix.

Review: By now, we've become accustomed to Japanese outfit Inosakira Rangers offering up reggae and vintage rocksteady style cover versions of pop and dance tracks of old. Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.

Review: SOLO 500 is back on their own self-titled label with the third entry in Galaxy Sound Company's series and again it digs deep into jazz-funk to turn out some killer breaks. Up first is the main theme from 1974's subway hijack movie The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three and it is one with a funky, jazzy, high-octane sound that has been sampled by Company Flow, Mix Master Mike and many more. On the backside is an edit of a tune from Manfred Mann Chapter Three's self-titled 1969 LP. This one has been famously sampled by The Prodigy. Another great little 7".

Review: Floridian musician Tedi Robinson specialises in what he calls "mellowfunkism" - a smooth, colourful, Prince-influenced take on retro-futurist soul that various draws inspiration from jazz-funk, '80s groove, contemporary R&B and P-funk. It's this attractive, effortlessly soulful trademark sound that's showcased on Robinson's second Six Nine Music "45" as Son of Pearl. Robinson's dazzling bass and smooth vocals take pride of place on A-side 'Wonderful', alongside head-nodding, hip-hop style beats, glistening guitars and twinkling electric piano sounds. Over on the reverse, 'The Other Side of Nowhere' boasts all manner of kaleidoscopic, P-funk-influenced synth sounds, crunchy R&B drums and more elastic bass courtesy of Robinson, whose vocals are once again superb.

Review: Madmua Records was so keen to reissue this 1966 gem from Spain's "national pop" scene that they spent a best part of a year tracking down the singer behind the record, Pilar Espi AKA Sonia. Listening to the title track, an infectiously funky, Spanish Language cover of Rolling Stones' favourite 'Get Off My Cloud', it's easy to see why. That track, a faithfully fuzzy, swinging-sixties interpretation, is undoubtedly the highlight, but there's plenty more fun to be found across the EP. Check for example the American girl group-influenced stomp of 1964's 'Si Tuviera Un Martillo' and '1,2,3', a horn-heavy chunk of Detroit soul-influenced Spanish pop that first featured on the flipside of the original 1966 release of 'Aqui En Mi Nube'.

They released a number of albums with Fabio at the centre and wowed fans and critics alike around the world. This is a brand new single that sees him link up with singer Alvin Le-Bass on 'Take Me Back' and then 'Trying Hard' features Lana Gordon. That A-side tune is a lush mix of downtempo lounge vibes and timeless soul vocals with clean electronic production. Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.

Review: Come on, its 2016, of course there are soul bands from Russia. More specifically, there's soul bands from Russia that make absolutely incredible music, and The Soul Surfers are one of them. They've been busy over the last 6-7 years, and the Spasibo label have been instrumental in getting their sound across to the masses. "Vladimir's Groove" is deep, funky and wet, filled with an awesome slap-back bass, a trippy cascade of organs and just a general feeling of "yeah". "Igor's Groove" is slower, more laid-back and possibly even better and bolder, bringing out the best out of this band and solidifying them as serious contenders for best soul kings of the post 2000's. A band to watch - keep 'em peeled!

Using library music as their source, they bring their own psychedelic twist with deeply funky grooves and have done now for over a decade. Here they kick off with a seven-plus minute medley of 16 tracks that mix up soul from all eras with wah-wah sounds and real emotion. They repeat the same trick on the flipped with 17 tracks all featuring in a journey through space and funk that leaves you in awe.

Review: The Soul Surfers share their debut 7" on Broc Recordz, following a promising entree working with various raw funk and soul greats, including with Jack Nilovic on his 'Maze of Sounds' compilation, not to mention appearing on the first volume of the recent Two Tales For The Mind V/A. 'High Roller' and its counterpart 'Big Slick' are two large, roomy, instrumental sonic gateau slices, on which an outsized four-string occupies the front and centre of both mixes, to megalomaniac, almost gluttonous effect. Review: The Soul Surfers & Shawn Lee have linked their creative energies once more with a new pair of singles for the cultured Spasibo Records. Both tracks on this limited gold vinyl were recorded in 2018. One was captured at Moscow's Magnetone studio during Lee's visit for the premiere of a movie documenting his prior recording with The Soul Surfers, and the other was recorded remotely with The Soul Surfers at their Nizhniy Novgorod headquarters and Lee at his London studio, The Shop. The collaboration is a fruitful one with two sublime and timeless funk cuts featuring some bittersweet replaying of classic melodies.

Review: Not to be confused with the independent funk and soul exhumers Strut Records, who were acquired by the !K7 monopoly in 2008, Strut Records (here recorded as Strutt) was a short-lived North Carolinian, now apparently resurrected, record label active in the early 1970s and exclusively dedicated to the work of the band the Soulfull Strutters. The Fayetteville octet drove a rousing bargain with the soul stomper 'Let Your Feelings Go', indeed seeming to incite the mass-reflexive impulse buy (and with no remorse) by entreating the listener to abandon all emotional valence and make a kind of Kierkegaardian leap of faith - not only into the void of love, but into a commitment to dancing and dancing well, as well as into copping the record. Clever.

Review: DC based imprint Peoples Potential Unlimited have really cornered the market in highly collectable reissued boogie funk rarities in 2010 and end the year on a high note with the three vocal cuts lifted from Real Love, a mid 80s mini album from Michael Soward that mixes new gospel dynamics and heavy synthesiser funk. Dam Funk fans will delight in the vintage sounds spread across this dinky 45 with the dusted groove of "He's Alive" particularly impressive.

Review: Split Decision Band dropped this pearler back in 2018. They hail from Des Moines, Iowa, and are well known to hardcore diggers who cost some of their 70s soul gems. This is another one of them with a laissez-faire vocal backed with warming chords and twirling chords that really dazzle. On the flipside tune 'Say Woman', a deeper male voice takes over the singing duties and delivers a fine turn that is utterly seductive. Some call and response with another female comes in later and the funky bass and deep cut drums are just perfect.

The crew's subtle revision of Le Pamplemousse's drowsy, synth-laden deep disco shuffler 'Gimme What You Got' on the flip offers less intensity with its string-laden slice of sun-kissed sweetness.

Review: South African funk outfit Stimela, named after the Zulu word for locomotive, formed out of the ashes of bandleader Ray Phri's previous band, The Cannibals, and soon became an institution in their homeland. Review: For those who value the lineage and heritage of breaks, beats, funk, soul, hip-hop and crate digging, here's a reissue you won't want to sleep on. Don Alias, Gene Perla and Steve Grossman originally laid down their debut record as Stone Alliance in 1976, and tucked away within the hard grooving jazz funk cuts was a track called 'Sweetie Pie'. This particular jam had a sax break which you know as soon as you hear it - sampled to high heaven and immortalised in the culture, now 'Sweetie Pie' is available on this neat and tidy 7" with a beautifully roomy live version on the flip if you want to edge a little difference into the mix.

Review: Eight-piece soul unit Stone Foundation have been turning out their own distinctive brand of soul for a full quarter of a century now. They have dropped plenty of albums in that time and have a new one to mark the occasion on the way - Standing In The Light: 25 Years Of Stone Foundation, which features all of their greatest tunes, including some originals such as this one, which is also getting its own limited purple vinyl 7" release. As always this is all new but with an authentic vintage aesthetic that makes it impossible to date. The noodling guitar work and funky bass is irresistible with fat synths up top and the playful vocals add further layers of funk.

Review: Christopher Sprains and The Strange Band recorded a whole heap of material in a hazy, drug-fuelled 19178, but their - surprisingly - never gained enough traction with the NYC disco crowd. Perhaps this work was too ahead of its time and, while it does share some qualities with the music of Rick James, it contains something dark, sexy, a little bit twisted and, of course, strange. The lead track "You" is a synth-heavy, electrifying boogie cut with a rugged percussion swing and an air of post-punk to its mix down, not to mention those utterly freaky vocals; our favourite, though, is actually "Space V", an insanely nutty electro cut that would have undoubtedly been on The Electrifying Mojo's playlist should it have landed on his lap. Totally recommended...

Review: R. Ackley is the man behind this particular Status project - there are many others in various genres - and he is credited with just one release - 1977's Girl, which has become a cult classic in the world of funk and soul. It was written alongside C. Barton and is a glorious bit of lavish and immersive soul with a tricky rhythm section firing out minimal but punch rhythms under the AOR-style vocals. It's cosmic and Beatrice and perfect for so many settings. On the flip is 'Wild Woman' written with S. Bourne and it is another heater well worth having, especially as an original of this will cost you well over 300 quid.

Review: Expansion's latest must-have release brings together two killer cuts from Sylvia Striplin's brilliant 1981 album "Give Me You Love", which originally appeared on Roy Ayers' Uno Melodic label. Ayers produced and arranged both cuts alongside regular collaborator James Bedford. "Give Me Your Love" is, of course, something of an anthem in underground disco circles, with Striplin's breathy and emotionally rich vocal rounding off a superb cut that's rich in crunchy Clavinet lines, walking bass, snappy drums, sensual synth doodles and rising horns. Flipside "You Can't Turn Me Away", meanwhile, is closer in sound and vibe to Roy Ayers' jazz-funk cuts from the period, which is no bad thing.

Review: The much loved Tramp label is mighty good at serving up the soul and this time it is the buttery smooth sounds of Stroke they turn to for this reissue. The original 45rpm is one of those rare as hens' teeth cuts that cost way too much to buy even if you do track one down. The A-side is the sort of wonderfully uplifting tune that brings life-affirming joy to your life. On the flip is something really quite different - a more rock-tinged funky stepper by the name of 'The Real Deal'.
