Review: The 45 Loves crew brings more prime dance floor heat here with a double hip hop single that drips with classic references. The first side, 'G', has boss rhymes from a pair of MCs and some lush backing vocals that add the velvet, while big trumpets and deep cut beats provide the groove. On the flip, things get more sweet and laid back, with a rolling beat riding up and down beneath nice Rhodes chords, lush strings and smooth female flow that cannot fail to bring the good times.

Review: When it comes to crafting party-starting joints featuring classic hip-hop and R&B vocals, few producers can match the output of Gallic rework fiend Jerome Potin AKA Moar. He's in prime form on this ultra-limited "45" too. A-side 'H' crafts a rolling, 4/4 hip-hop tempo beats out of some classic disco licks and then adds Ol' Dirty Bastard and Kelis' vocals from one of the biggest hip-hop hits of 1999. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. Flipside 'HH' is equally as funky and accessible, with cut-up edit effects, rubbery slap-bass sounds, jangling acoustic guitar chords, warming synths and the lead vocal from a much-loved R&B jam. Its next release comes from Jerome Potin aka Moar; producer, remixer, DJ and A&R at the Trad Vibe label from Nantes, who serves up some low-slung grooves on the Funky Party two-tracker. Review: Disco re-edit master Moplen has been busy touching up this Jackie Moore gem with sprinkles of his studio magic. The original vocal remains in tact as the trumpets and funky drum breaks power forwards the groove below. A vocal mix makes more of the sublime soul tones and then come two further versions on the flip. The Breakdown remix is one of big breaks but nothing detracts from the lung busting performance of Moore. Last of all is a Chin-mental mix so you really have plenty to chose from.

This edition - the seventh EP to date - is another action-packed winner. Rising star Alan Dixon delivers a lightly tooled-up, all-action revision of Gyedu Bley Amadou's tropical disco classic 'Highlife', before Barcelona-based John Talabot and Pional re-frame Ekambi Brilliant's 'Afrika Afrika' as a kind of Afro-post-punk/dub disco mash-up. Over on side B, Escapade dances through a bouncy disco-house take on Pasteur Lappe's 'Na Real Sekele Fo Ya', while Jacques Renault expertly rearranges Michael Amara's Afro-disco-funk staple 'New Bell'.

Review: Mr Bongo kickstarts a new Afro 45s series with serious intention; all-girl troupe from Guinea Amazones De Guinee take the lead with a live recording from Paris, 1983. Taken from their Au Coeur De Paris album, it's the perfect example of a live recording with the balance of musicianship and crowd participation precision tuned. Flip for the previously rare 1980 recording by Ivory Coast's Moussa Doumbia whose smoky vocals and JB-level shrieks hit hard over a clam-tight Afrofunk rhythm. What a way to start a new series.

Review: Just a month after dropping their first 7" in the form of a sweet and funky version of classic hip-hop joint from the 90s, Alloy Cuts is back. Once again, Booty Hall is involved this time facing off against Carla Marshall, a known talent from the roots and reggae world. The resulting sounds start with 'All Night Champion', which has raw and dusty breaks, old school stabs and funky drums topped off with a mix of early hip-hop vocals and soulful coos. 'Champinstrumental' on the flip cuts back the vocals to a more direct dance floor instrumental.

Review: Dominican band Midnight Groovers was founded back in the early 1970s and went on to become known as one of the best around at what they did. They have a unique sense of sway and swing and cadence to their music and that is well exemplified by the A-side tune on this new 45 rpm. It makes for a double pronged attack on both body and soul. The flip side 'Ce bon comme ca' features an edit by Dominique Panolm, a singer-songwriter from Guadeloupe who keeps the energy but updates it with a more modern touch that is sure to ignite dan floors. Another superb offering from Atangana Records.

Review: Athens of The North delivers once again here with another delightful reissue of a soul classic by Bernetia Miller And The Soul Groovers. An original of this Georgian gem is insanely rare and in fact the Athens boss himself has never actually seen a copy. It was recorded in the studio of Phil Walden's studio in Macon, Georgia and Bernetia herself has said it took many takes and plenty of hard work to get the result they wanted. Backing band The Soul Groovers had their own bus on which they toured plenty and this reissue is from the master tapes owned by Bernetia. 'You Can Tell Me Goodbye' has lo-fi drums and raw horns with a yearning vocal while 'I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You' is more slow and steady and emotionally moving with a more tender vocal.

Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Funk Inc's sublime "Sister Janie" resides on the flip, a more lo-fi funk bullett for the diggers, and complete with a dusty organ!

Review: Freddie McCoy's 'Spider Man' single dates back originally to 1965 when it appears as the tittle track on his album on Prestige. The cool jazz maestro and visionary American soul jazz vibraphonist had already put two albums at that point but Spider Man is his most revered. This lead tune is a beguiling and shuffling Latin rhythm with dancing keys and busy percussive layers insisting that you move your ass. On the backside is 'Soul Yogi' which actually sounds something like his take on Northern Soul. It's an uptempo, string-driven head spinner for sure.

Side A is inhabited by one of the era's most interesting individuals. Infamously censored and eventually exiled, Taiguara's chaotic flute, guitar and piano arrangement is a tight weave of melodies, counter melodies and start dynamics. Flip for the classically soul-oriented "Deixa Eu Te Amar" will bright horns, brash drums and a bold vocal from Marisa Rossi. Pow.

Review: Last time out, hard-working Hanover producer Mr Confuse delivered some suitably sweaty, sample-heavy thrills built around horns, Moog stabs and the kind of infectious grooves that sit somewhere in between disco, funk and Afrobeat ('Spinning Around'). He changes tack a little on this fiery and funky follow-up, getting soulful, big-voiced singer Inna Yvsotska to belt out some life-affirming vocals above a crunchy funk groove and some seriously heavy horn lines. The quality of Confuse's backing track is confirmed by the flipside instrumental version, which allows further opportunities to admire the solid-but-loose-limbed drum-breaks, toasty bass, and razor-sharp horns. A guaranteed floor-filler.

Review: McKenzie & Gardiner are well admired as an original funk pair who have long roots and even better sounds. They are well known by serious crate diggers and rare groove and boogie enthusiasts and now their 1983 tune 'From Time' gets popped back in the spotlight courtesy of this reissue. In its original form, it has superb silky synth bass, floating drums and nice textured claps with male-female vocals that soar with plenty of soul. The Groove version makes more of the funky bass twangs and drum machine fills so is just as good.

Review: The superbly classy Daptone label comes on strong with another perfect formed 7" of retro soul. This time, the label's in house crew Menahan Street Band provide their famously authentic grooves, with big horns, rolling licks and drawn out leads on 'How Did I Get Here?' which on the a-side has vocals from LaRose Jackson. Soaring high and filled with rich soul, it's another timeless tune. On the flip is the instrumental. It's a story telling tune with some cosmic synth work and nice old school tambourines for an old/new fusion that gets you movin'.

Review: Yuki Kanesaka returns with a delicious uptempo remix-cover of Herbie Hancock's thoroughgoing jazz patent, 'Watermelon Man'. In respectful contrast to Hancock's original piece, Kanesaka deploys a to-the-letter rendition of the original's opening Hindewhu whistle hoot - also heard on the mashup B-side - and keeps up Hancock's intended 'mathematical balance' with a nonetheless meatier, dance-ready EQ balance. Legend has it that this was Hancock's first ever song to be composed with commercial success in mind; we're not surprised at its continued proliferation, appreciation and reproduction across the globe - and now in Japan, no less.

Review: After a start in the immensely popular Buffalo Springfield and a two-year stint forming Poco in 1968, he entered into a partnership with a young singer/songwriter called Kenny Loggins. Their career lasted for seven years producing multiple albums together. In 1979 Jimmy Messina released his first album which featured the well-regarded Jazz Fusion and Smooth Jazz tracks 'Do You Want To Dance & 'Love is Here'. Review: James Mason's 'Rhythm of Life' - one of the long overlooked but now celebrated musician's most popular cuts - has never appeared on a seven-inch single before, in part because its' six-minute length made it more suitable for 12" singles and LPs (it first appeared as the title track of Mason's 1977 debut album). Dynamite Cuts have decided to address this by preparing their own (fully licensed) seven-inch edit, which successfully chops down the high-octane, spiritually inspired jazz-funk gem without losing any of its energy or soul. This time round it comes backed by another classic cut from the Rhythm of Life LP, the more laidback, spacey synth solo-sporting jazz-funk warmth of 'Good Thing'.

Review: Matata were formed in Kenya in 1963, laying down their grooves in Nairobi's Brilliant Club before going on to record two albums in London in the early 70s. Both Air Fiesta and Independence are perfect nuggets of Afro-funk, but alas Matata were reportedly homesick and they disbanded to return home. Their short-lived legacy lives on though, and now Dynamites Cuts have turned to their second album to present two of the hottest joints on a cool and deadly 7". 'I Feel Funky' is one of the band's biggest hits, while on the flip we're treated to 'Talkin Talkin' - you can't say funkier than that really, can you?

Review: Mestizo Beat have been making moves on the West Coast scene for a while now and this new one is sure to help them go to the next level. It expands on the core sound the band have championed so far with cues from Roy Ayers, Isaac Hayes, George Benson, Eric B and Rakim all stitched into their own particular brand of soul. 'Left Behind' (feat Jamie Allensworth) has breezy, soulful vocals and harmonious jazz keys while 'I Want You' (feat Terin Ector & Jamie Allensworth) is a cover of Marvin Gaye's 'I Want You' with its swooning horns and vintage synthesizer strings soaring over the top.

Review: Some high-grade re-edit action here, as dusty-fingered Chicagoan crate diggers Sadar Bahar and Marc Davis join forces with pal (and credited mixer) Rahaan on two fine tweaks of suitably obscure tracks. A-side 'Disco' is a groovy, funky, horn-heavy affair; a sumptuously string-laden, orchestrated blend of righteous gospel-soul, Philadelphia International style proto-disco and grooves reminiscent of those frequently employed on Steely Dan's most up-beat moments. 'Beat Down' meanwhile is a jaunty, percussive and sun-soaked slab of dancefloor-ready Latin jazz that speeds up as it goes along. The jazz dancers will love it!

Review: Bars on the French Riviera, beaches in Cannes, hot sunny weather, mesmerising deep-blue seas and lovely leafy palm trees all come to mind once you drouth need on this latest 12" slice heat from Favourite France. Magic Source do a great job of musical transportation here particularly with 'Genius of Love' which is a riff on the Tam Tam girls classic. The tropical island beats and funky bass riffs all douse you in good vibes while a lead flute takes your mind up, up and away into a cloudless sky. 'Riviera Drive' is slight more dance effort ready with its rump-wiggling trumpets, exotic synths and Balearic disco vibes.

Review: Joe Baer Magnant and The Ready bring that sweet sweet soul sound to Funk Night for a tasty 7" packed with good time grooves and a lil dose of the blues. Magnant is an accomplished guitarist who's been striking out on his own more recently, and his chops are in full effect on the heavy-grooving "Honey Stung". There are serious amounts of funk in those drums, and some punch in the brass section, but really this one belongs to Magnant's expressive playing. He's equally compelling on the B-side, which houses more downbeat cut "Orozco's Guarantee".

Review: Magic In Threes' latest 7" single 'Push The Rock' comes as a rather experimental funk cut, and perhaps one that could only be made today. With the ghostly vocals of fellow Tennessee vocalist Amber Woodhouse gliding across the mix, this one's a veritable funk roller, floating on the vibe rather than leaning to far into disparate sections. With the band heavily inspired by old film soundtracks, obscure hip-hop tapes and library music, we can certainly hear that an added sense of eclecticism and exploration has gone into this track, informed not merely by funk alone.

Review: Japanese heavyweights HHV continue their ongoing trawl through the back catalogue of long-serving hip-hop producer, DJ, record collector and self-styled King of Diggin', Muro. Here they present the second part of the dusty-fingered hero's turn-of-the-millennium Pan Rhythm series of 12" singles, this time presenting it on a tidy seven inch single. 'Hip-Hop Band' is a weighty, floor friendly, horn-heavy re-make of the Stetsasonic song of the same name, with local mic man Boo delivering tweaked versions of the U.S crew's verses in his native Japanese. While jazzy, the bombastic backing track - which can be heard in full on the flipside instrumental version - is forthright and club-ready, making the single a must-have for working hip-hop DJs and those who love the more up-tempo end of the rap spectrum.
