Patrick Fitzgerald - "Punch" (3:36)
Jello Biafra & Motorpsycho - "Punch" (3:57)
Review: Two towering labels, Alternative Tentacles and Crispin Glover, break the mould for a momentary merger on this artistic collision of rogue planets: a new split reissued 7" housing that infamous syncretic, Patrick Fitzgerald, Motorpsycho and Jello Biafra, and their twin versions of Fitzgerald's original song 'Punch'. Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Review: Mr Bongo serves up the new collaboration here from Mandaworld (bereft known as Amanda Hicks) and partner Matthew Tavares, who is Matty of the much loved jazz outfit BADBADNOTGOOD. The pair have a magical musical synergy that really shines through here as they interweave and uplift one another. 'Warm You' is a real classic that fits in the canon of timeless ballads. It is a dreamy pop song doused in oodles of reverberating guitars and mellow shoegaze vibes that evokes a world of nostalgic feelings. 'Spoonfeed' is just as warm and lush but a little more subdued.

Review: Canadian singer-songwriter June McDoom makes something rather unclassifiable; poppy-noisy smatterings of sound and melody with influences from jazz, blues and soul, but combined in such a way as to not be as easily categorisable as that combination might normally make out. Her latest self-titled project here collects a slew of personal intimations and ballads reflecting a wealth of young life experiences, relationships and emotions. The extent of its sensitivity can only be sought in between the grit, as there's a deep well of texture embedded in every track, but listen between the lines (and take a peek at its collaborations with artists like Sufjan Stevens, Neko Case, Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird), and you'll soon glean a solid idea for its stated, romantic intent.

If I Say (4:35)
Review: This Record Store Day 2019 exclusive finds Mumford and Sons at work in the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York. It was there that they decided to serve up four carefully reimagined versions of tracks from their acclaimed Delta album. Each one shows a different, incredibly tender side. 'Woman' is first with its gentle piano keys and closely mic-ed vocals soothing the soul, while 'Guiding Light' has more upbeat but still lo-fi guitar riffs and 'Wild Heart' is another showcase of the beautifully raw and emotive vocals of lead singer Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford. 'If I Say' is a rousing, heart swelling closer.

Review: Mumford & Sons drop a surprise single release alongside Pharrell Williams, 'Good People', delivering on a long-awaited promise to hop in the studio together after years of knowing each other. Finally falling back on their immediate instincts, 'Good People' hears the band and the solo wunderkind sing of tiredness and revelation, making adept use of a dry, driving, sportsmanlike instrumental palette (think hand claps, stomps, gospel harmonies). Though cryptic in theme, the mood on this one-off is one of triumph and impending miracle works to come.

Review: Demon Music present a career-spanning collection of 25 of Kirsty MacColl's most popular recordings on a 2xLP set. Between her June 1979 debut single 'They Don't Know' and her tragic death in 2000, Kirsty released five studio albums and seventeen singles, a succinct but consistently high quality body of work, much of it self-written or in partnership with notable collaborators like Graham Gouldman or Johnny Marr. Whether exploring themes of love and loss, or applying her original and often witty worldview, Kirsty's talent as a songwriter and singer is instantly apparent on this new compilation. She was equally adept at throwing new light on old favourites - look no further than her (some might say better than the original) covers of The Kinks' 'Days', and Billy Bragg's 'A New England', both included here.

Tracks like 'Alan's Christmas Card' and 'Black Cat' showcase the unique blend of Indian instruments with Western touches, while 'La La' and 'Take Away Kesh' delve into more traditional compositions. This album serves as a fascinating historical piece, highlighting the skill of Alford and Moyes in blending Indian and Western sounds. Recommended for fans of indo-prog and world music, it captures a technical zeitgeist at the intersection of cultural influences. With its creativity and historical significance, this album earns high marks for cultural reasons as much as musically.

It was thought to be a lost recording until it recently showed up and now gets fully revived by Strut. There are strong political links between these countries which no doubt adds weight to this musical link up. It is a great exchange of cultures from parables to laments on child abuse to tunes that fuse reggae, jazz and post-punk with township styles.

The country legend was clear about her creative aims with the record, aiming for the moody, mysterious tone emitted by the likes of Vince Guaraldi and Julie London in their takes on festive music. It’s a record to be savoured by the warm glow of the fire, when the holiday hubbub has given way to intimacy and reflection, and truth be told these standards and original compositions will get you through the winter months regardless of whether it’s still Christmas or not around your record player.

Review: Branko Mataja manages to draw many comparison for his music, even though it is hugely original. Everything from Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western to the electrified belly dance sounds of Omar Khorshid via homemade 90s bedroom psychedelia colour his groves, which are enchanting and mystic. The artist hails from Belgrade, spent World War 2 in a German work camp and after escaping managed to live out his days in North Hollywood. He made his own guitars in the 1970s, which lends this music its charm, and taught himself to play in order to pay homage to his ancestral home of Yugoslavia.

Review: If you've seen the movie Synecdoche, New York, the idea of an artwork taking on a life of its own and eventually consuming the creator will be pretty familiar. Charlie Kaufmann's typically strange triumph is, of course, far from the only film that approaches this kind of subject matter, and in many ways the concept is bound to grow more relevant with the onset of AI creativity. Just who, or what, has made that piece of work? Etcetera etcetera.
Tom Cox is also no stranger to these ends. His debut novel - but 13th book - was published in April 2022. Villager draws on the author's passion for nature, music and folklore in a psychedelic trip through small settlement life, and in the pages we meet RJ McKendree. Now that name has an album, Wallflower, written, produced and developed by Cox, which is every bit the hazy late-60s folk rock masterpiece that never was.

Some of McLean's most popular songs from his five-decade career, as well as some rare and unreleased tracks, all appear on this multifaceted wax compendium. Recorded in Kwake Bass' South London studio, this nine-track masterpiece defies genre boundaries, seamlessly blending blues, folk, post-rock, and dub to create a unique sonic landscape. Already well into her career by the time of its release - it's her fourth album - it was certainly Mitchell's best yet, reflecting a period in her life where she took a break from touring and live performing to focus on creation. Its confessional and poetic lyrics, not to mention the distinctively groggy yet idyllic guitar and piano playing on songs like 'All I Want', 'River', 'A Case Of You', heard Mitchell encapsulate the various milestones, Renaissances and turning points of the contemporary rock landscape of the 1970s, into a singular LP.

Review: The music of Joni Mitchell will never go out of fashion and so it is that much of it is in the middle of a big reissue run. Joni's voice and songwriting has rarely ever been topped by anyone in any genre, let alone the folk and Americana worlds she is best known in. Song To A Seagull is one of many long player testaments to that and was a remarkable debut in 1968 which soon marked her out in a class of one. The album is known for having been mixing poorly the first time around so has been sharpened up for this reissue meaning both sides of the record - labeled 'I Came to the City' and 'Out of the City and Down to the Seaside' - sound superb.

There's a swooning romanticism to Wondrous Afternoon which feels in thrall to 60s lounge pop and Italian big band swing, and he namechecks Rome as an influence on this most feel-good of records. It's got all the depth and charm you expect from one of his albums, but balanced out with a toe-tapping sensibility which should catch on like wildfire as the wax does the rounds.

Review: Annelies Monsere's Mares album takes us deep into the contemporary underground of Belgium as she serves up some fascinating and experimental new ambient and modern classical compositions. They are raw and deep and draw on plenty of the traditions of European folk. The album was written between 2016 and 2022 and is full of contrasts - adventurous new synth sounds, organic folk moods, brooding minimalism and complex harmonies. It was made using the guitar and piano and was conceived as "adding similar layers upon each other with (slightly) different hues". It's a beguiling new work littered with her own vocals which make it all the more impactful.

Review: American singer-songwriter Kevin Morby returns with More Photographs, the follow-up to the acclaimed LP This Is A Photograph. The companion LP continues to flesh out the former album's themes of life, death, and memory - portrayed through a mix of autobiographical and fictional stories - revisiting and reimagining several of its songs from an alternative perspective and mood. Morby puts it best: if This Is A Photograph was an impression of "a house that you have been living inside of, then More Photographs is, perhaps, the same home just experienced differently. As if you, its inhabitant, have taken a tab of something psychedelic and now, suddenly, you've replaced your eyeglasses with kaleidoscopes." Morby's poetic lyrics collide well with its atmospheric, revelatory arrangements, all while doing equal justice to its collabs with the likes of Katie Crutchfield and Sam Cohen.

Review: American indie rock singer-songwriter Kevin Morby presents his seventh studio album More Photographs. A companion piece to his previous album Sundowner, More Photographs features songs that were recorded during the same sessions but did not make the final cut - each piece truly sounds like a "photograph", snapshots of time left in dusty old attic-bound photo albums or in ramshackle boxes. New takes on the previous album's songs, including a reprisal version of 'Don't Underestimate Midwest American Sun', lend a more honest perspective on the polished originals, also released on Dead Oceans.

Review: Lucky is the debut album from Megan Moroney, who is fast becoming one of the brightest new talents out of Nashville. Her take on the country tradition is the perfect blend of classic and contemporary, but of course it's all about the star at the centre of the sound and Moroney's voice conveys heartbreak and fortitude in equal measure. Produced by Kristian Bush, the album more than lives up to her CMT award for Female Breakout Video of the Year for 'Tennessee Orange' and a swathe of other plaudits that ensure we're going to hear plenty more from Moroney in the years to come. This deluxe edition of the album comes across two discs, with the fourth side reserved for an etching making this an unmissable collectors item for Moroney's swelling fanbase.

Review: Following the success of 2020's 'Morricone Segreto', which received unprecedented acclaim from international press as well as support from admirers such as Hans Zimmer, CAM Sugar marks what would have been Morricone's 95th birthday with a new collection of little-known gems: the Morricone Segreto Songbook. This anthology was born out of a desire to delve into Morricone's cinematic song production is complimentary to the 2020 release. We hear again the pop-psych, dark-cinematic and avant-garde sounds that characterized the original collection, as well as hints of the folk-rock of the day and poignant ballads and elegant chansons.

Review: Following her acclaimed 2021 album, Star-Crossed, which topped Billboard's Top Albums Sales chart, Deeper Well now arrives from Kacy Musgroves. Prior to this, her groundbreaking 2018 album Golden Hour not only debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top Country Album chart but also earned her the Album of the Year at the Grammy, CMA, and ACM Awards. In 2023, Musgraves achieved her first #1 on the Hot 100 with 'I Remember Everything,' a duet with Zach Bryan, marking the first country duet in 40 years since Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers' 'Islands in the Stream' in 1983. At the recent 66th Grammy Awards, the song won Best Country Song, solidifying Musgraves' unprecedented feat of winning in four major country categories.
