Foxtits Funkdrive (3:39)
Centigrade Duckfucker (3:17)
Review: Izhak Del Muham and Tahlhoff Garten make up the Zack Christ duo, and together these dudes have produced a string of deranged bass music for Infinite Machine. This week, however, they launch the newly found Husoptagelser imprint with a devious little 7" that goes further away form the dance floor, and deeper into your mind. "Foxiest Funkdrive" soounds exactly like its name, a stumbling, quirky pile of kick drums splattered all over a minimal harmonic rhythm, and electronic manipulation - class. The flip sees "Centigrade Duckfucker" twist the groove further still, coming out with a glitchy pile of claps and drums, driven forwards by icy shreds of sonics. A definite tip, if we've ever seen one!

French Fries - "Module"
Review: Darling of the fashion world, brave adventurer of the bass world, Brooklyn's Zebra Katz continues his wholly distinctive approach to electronic music with the ridiculously slo-mo "Sex Sellz". Sleazy and woozy, Katz almost purrs his message across the endless spaces between the gutter-minded bass nodes and squiggles. Unique. For something a little more upbeat (but just as dark) flip for the hypno-trap remix from Teeth or French Fries breakbeat-techno roller "Module". A fantastically varied release; sex does sell... And so will this 12"

Review: Anyone who needs proof that dance music can permeate the boundaries of nations, cultures and societies wants to check Zuli, if you haven't already. The Cairo-producer, who has found favour with the likes of Wire and Pitchfork, makes music that sounds like a delivery of drum 'n' bass thundering through a weighty dose of techno, topped with the staccato trappings and trap, juke and footwork - not necessarily predominant sounds on the Egyptian club scene, which is often more house and progressive focussed.

His latest EP, All Caps, is basically six calling cards for the music maker's style. Opening on ferociously unforgiving, industrial-leaning hardcore, even the most low-slung here, 'Penicillin Duck', or the more melodic (the choppy waves of synth on 'Keen Demang') feel like someone has hit the Melt button on your mind. Tread carefully, then, but definitely be sure to tread.

Review: Having previously plied his trade on Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint, Zuli (real name Ahmed El Ghazoly) resurfaces on Milan-based "irregular noise" specialists Haunter. The Egyptian multi-instrumentalist and producer is renowned for producing tracks seeped in noise and blessed with notably jagged beats, and as expected there's more imaginative dystopian madness throughout Trigger Finger. For example, "X3" melds together distorted noise, heavily manipulated spoken word samples, punishing sub bass and grizzly guitars, while the title track is the kind of mind-bending, post-jungle insanity that used to be a feature of the late 90s UK IDM scene. The EP's less rhythmically minded moments, such as creepy opening soundscape "Everyday", are also impressive.

Song IV (Quintet)
Review: This year's Record Store Day has been nothing short of sensational, with countless gems from the past having been made available once again, but this morbidly sough-after collaboration between Peter Zummo and Arthur Russell will have die-hard fans of both artists salivating manically. In all honesty, it is an outstanding piece of music and one which fully deserved an official reissue. This forward-thinking pair of artists were so ahead of the game back in the 80's that it's impossible to think how people reacted to this stuff back then. The opener, "Sci-Fi" is their familiar bundle of horns, delays and violins, all blended together with Russell's vocal laments, whereas "Slow Heart" heads into deeper, more rhythmic territories. On the flip, "Song VI" is a mesmerising battle between xylophones, marching shreds of percussion and extravagantly-timed delay shots, while the Quintet version drops in a much-welcomed dose of Russell's goofy lyricism. Not to be missed.

The album comes on unique solar flare coloured vinyl, and as for its contents, well, they're grainy and immersive, widescreen and cinematic, immediately transporting you out into the farthest reaches of space. Review: The mythical Warp figurehead whose greatness is only matched by the one of AFX returns to his native label with a mysterious new clan who go by the name of Z Machines. Things like this always get our mouths salivating and especially when the music of this quality and diversity! "Remote Amber" shifts things into gear on a purely future jazz vibe, with "Sad Robot Goes Funny" then going in with a Hancockian synth solo and some truly nutty break chops. "World Three" spins the previous track on its head thanks to improvisational piano keys, whereas "Dissolve" forms a more concrete structure and "You Endless" ties things off on a downtempo tip. All in all, this is exciting new stuff from the legend.

Review: Just so everyone is on the same page, this is NOT the soundtrack to the Dune movie, but rather the musical inspiration taken from the book series of the same name. Bernard Szajner's cult classic has been near impossible to find over the years, and prices for the original are extraterrestrial. With the help of Infine and the Carl Craig's persistent call for its reissue; you can now own the original in a fully remastered version. Using mainly Oberheim and Arp synths, Szajner created a veritable gem, one that covers remnants of techno, avant-garde, drone and neo-classical. It's an LP for everyone looking for inspiration in the dance music world. Szajner aka Z brings everything back to its pure basics, where mystical pads blend with otherworldly beats and prophetic synth stabs. A must for all true collectors and a welcome addition to anyone's electronic catalogue. You'd be silly to sleep on this...

Review: The mighty Zelienople gets an extremely welcome re-release on Loose Thread. "Ink", an album first issued back in 2005 as a CD-R on Finland's Lattajjaa label, will be limited to 100 copes this time round! The music on this album takes on a severely devolved sound, lacking the grainy production of "His/Hers", instead revealing the band's remarkable primal dirge in all its unfettered glory. It all comes across as if it was recorded with just one or two mics in some gloomy, reverberating chamber, which only adds to the drama and moroseness of the songs.

Review: Zelienople (named after a borough in Pennsylvania) is the moniker of Chicago based musician's Matt Christensen (guitar/vocals), Mike Weis (percussion) and Brian Harding (guitar/clarinet). Between them, in a desolate suburban basement, they have come up with "His/Hers", a record of pure psych-rock sludge. There is certainly no shortage of acts willing to throw down waves of experimental guitar noise and clattering percussion, but with the benefit of focus and experience, Zelienople sound like something totally out of time and almost impossible to place. Residing in a hazy drunken world in-between slowcore pioneers Low, psych-folk outsiders Charalambides, Japanese overlords Boris and Dead Man era Neil Young, "His/Hers" is a faded photograph of rock music past, yet still manages to keep a firm footing in the present. Guitars echo like disappearing ghosts and vocals moan and wail mercilessly while percussion bubbles up in glorious waterlogged waves.

With beats kept low in the mix, the depth of the material is hard to miss. Gorgeous yet brittle textures loom over freeform songs like "Out of It" and "Coloured" while the live bass stabs of "Old Dirt" are some of the most urgent moments on this wonderfully moody release.

Review: There's an undeniably far-out feel to the Zenker Brothers' second album, Cosmic Transmission, which adds further layers of trippy textures, hallucinatory sounds and smoky intensity to the aural blueprint first explored on their 2015 debut full-length Immersion. There's much to admire throughout, from the mind-bending ambient weirdness of opener 'When Nothing is Safe', and the slipped dub haze of 'Whose In Control', to the drug-addled IDM of 'Natural Connection', and the polyrhythmic techno trip of 'Divided Society'. Most striking of all is the trio of tracks that close the album, all of which are powered forwards not by heavy techno beats (or even their usual crunchy, off-kilter breakbeats) but rather a series of ear-catching, fuzz-soaked synthesizer arpeggio lines.

If you're looking for a comparison it's perhaps worth looking over the border to Vienna and the two fingers to convention shown by Cheap Records at their height. In similar style, the tracklisting sees lithe, dancefloor pleasers like 'Carefree' and edgily distorted 'Switch Stance' rubbing shoulders with the vintage drum machine-led dubbiness of 'The Tibet Terrier'. So, whether you're after maverick beats or something renegade and yet playable, it's all here waiting for you.

Review: It seems fitting that Peter Zinovieff, a genuine pioneer of electronic music best known for founding the influential early synthesizer manufacturer EMS, is still capable of surprising and inspiring us with unheard music from beyond the grave. South Pacific Migration Party, officially his first specially recorded solo album since 1974, was recorded between 2013 and 2017 but is only now seeing the light of day. Full of fluid but abstract electronics, unusual ambient sounds and manipulated recordings of whales communicating with each other (provided to Zinovieff by oceanographer Susanah Buchan), the two-part piece is the aural equivalent of a 30-minute exploration of the world's deepest oceans with only oversized mammals for company.

Review: Versatile has undergone a serious resurrection over the last few years. For a label that was once heavily rooted in France's early noughties house scene with artists like Pepe Bradock at its core, the label has now expanded and moved on to much broader musical landscapes. Zombie Zombie have already released on the label, most notably on an EP containing a dangerously abrasive DJ Sotofett re-shuffle, and they now drop an absolute stomper of an LP for DJ Gilb'r's label. Ranging from nutty, quasi-house tracks such as "La Danse Des Ombre" to more improvisational synthesizer experiments like "Le Dernier Bain" or "Chuchotements", this LP has it all. There's a prominent Eastern influence in there, too, for all you Acid Arab fans!

Review: France's Zombie Zombie are perhaps the most representative outfit of Versatile's wet and wild discography, and the duo have served up some real fire power on the label over the years. Two years on from their last album, Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman return with a new full-length offering that originated as a soundtrack to Elsa Guerin and Martin Palisse's abstract Slow Futur juggling performance. "Hyperspace" opens with a soft-spoken tribal groove, a sublimely hazy and dubbed-out opener to let those synths warm up their muscles before the electro-leaning buzzes and low-ends of the quirky space-house jam that is "Slow Futur". "Blue Screen" is as majestic and hollow as it is cosmic, and its airy groove made of blocky synth rolls is mightily refreshing, while "Extra Life" goes back to an 80's flex thanks to its metallic drum pattern and deep, far-reaching synths. A glorious return to action from the cosmic brothers!

Drawing on industrial textures, they also touch on drone and ambient and pull you deep into their own unique sound world as a result.

Review: We all know 'country', in some circles, is an uncool genre term. But on this album, legendary post-punker industrialists Zoviet France have attempted to delegitimize this association, homing in on the genre's progression over the years through a different lens. Manifesting as a cleaner, more platonic form of country, 'The Decriminalisation Of Coutnry Music' is like the essence of bluegrass twang having been ripped from its historical context and shot into a never-ending space vacuum. Ambericana, if you will. At the same time, the band aren't shy of the genre's classic tropes and reference points, making this more of a thought provoking listen than that coinage might make out...

Made up primarily of short sound experiments crafted using a mixture of tape loops, samples, effects units and a limited range of instruments, the album's 13 tracks sit somewhere between Muslimgauze, proto-type drone, music concrete and the more ambient works of fellow 1980s experimentalists Cabaret Voltaire. While at times unsettling, much of the set is surprisingly meditative and exceptionally atmospheric; an otherworldly excursion that should appeal to experimentalists and ambient heads old and new.

Review: Those with far greater knowledge of Zoviet France's vast catalogue have long said that 1993's What is Not True is one of their most underrated and overlooked albums. Originally released on CD, it has now finally been given a vinyl pressing. It's well worth a listen, in part because it's a dark, pagan and ritualistic affair full of lengthy, exaggerated compositions that mix drowsy, unsettling ambient chords and macabre electronic tones with trippy, processed instrument sounds (drunken violins, for example), field recordings, spoken word snippets, slowly-shapeshifting refrains and the kind of exotic, Arabic-influenced percussion that was once the hallmark of the late, great Muslimgauze. Immersive, meditative and melancholic, it's the kind of album you'll want to get lost in.

Review: "A Flock Of Rotations" is the final reissue from Vinyl On Demand's ongoing focus on cult Newcastle upon Tyne group Zoviet France whose dissonant, industrial and droning sounds were influential throughout the eighties and nineties. This album is one of the best - it blurs the lines between ambient and psychedelic sounds, post-rock and noise on often scratchy tracks, with gauzy surfaces mired in grit and grizzled guitars. Adding an element of terror are distressed human cries and mangled folk vocals that make things bleak yet beguiling throughout.
