Review: The BEB boys have had this LP from Regis in the works for a while now, getting every coldwave freak from here to Timbuktu raving with excitement. Although this LP isn't made up wholly of new tracks, it is a fine compilation of the man's most important material post his purist techno days of the late 90's and early 2000's. Within, you'll find all of his most diverse and thought-provoking works, from the infamous remix of Raime's "This Foundry" to the gorgeous techno excursion that is the remix of "Loss" by Dalhous, a collection of works that span ambient, goth, techno and EBM. However, there a three new tunes: there's the excellent Nitzer Ebb-style remix of "Manbait" by Family Sex, the electrifying "CU1" by CUB, and the wavy, far-out trip that is "Plant Lillies At My Head" by Tropic Of Cancer. Yes, this is a bit special, so do the right thing.

Review: While many experimentalists are still coming to terms with the death of the late, great producer and live performer Mika Vainio, his spirit lives on via occasional archival releases. This latest one is particularly special, as it presents a rare live recording - apparently the only one in existence - of Vainio's three-way collaboration with fellow electronic minimalists Ryoji Ikeda and Alvo Noto. Across 11 movements, the trio thrilling moves through droning ambient, Autechre-ish re-imaginings of Jamaican dancehall rhythms, concrete-clad electro and pulsating abstract techno, before returning to where they began. It's a dizzying and hugely enjoyable journey that somehow gets the perfect balance each of the contributor's trademark style.

Review: On "Nocturne", his first fresh album for three years, legendary Greek composer Vangelis has jettisoned his beloved synthesizers and opted for a Grand Piano instead. The result is a set of breathtaking beautiful solo piano compositions that were, according to the press release accompanying the set, inspired by his pet passions: science, history and explorations. While he's included versions of a few old favourites from his expansive catalogue of film soundtracks - most notably the theme from "Chariots of Fire" and "Love Theme" from "Blade Runner" - the majority of the material is fresh and original. For the most part, these previously unheard compositions are every bit as atmospheric and beguiling as his ambient-leaning, synthesizer-heavy works.

Review: Earlier this year, Ian Boddy established the Tone Science label with a simple mission statement: to release "contemporary modular synthesizer compositions". Given that modular music-making has become increasingly popular in recent times, it makes perfect sense. Here, Boddy serves up a second compilation of previously unheard works, and it's surprisingly eclectic in nature. Sure, there are a few tracks that conjure up memories of pioneers such as the Radiophonic Workshop and Morton Subotnick (see Todd Barton's creepy "Floating World", Richard Quirk's dystopian "Radar Hill" and "Overtone" by Dave Bessell), but even more that bristle with sun-bright melodious intent. Highlights in this category include Paul Nagle's otherworldly "Euneirophrenia" and the deep space bliss of Bluetech's "Magnetic Lullaby".

Review: Thanks to Massive Attack's recent anniversary reissue of their touchstone "Mezzanine" album, trip-hop is back in the headlines. While we don't expect a full-blown revival just yet, it's always worth dipping into the style and its hazy, dub-flecked and sample-heavy sound. This triple-disc genre retrospective from Wagram should be an essential listen for both confirmed trip-hop heads and newcomers alike. It contains plenty of well-known classics - see the contributions from I Monster, Tricky, Smith & Mighty, Kid Loco, Moby, Boards of Canada, Kruder and Doefmeister, Tosca and Nightmares on Wax, for starters - as well as under-appreciated underground hits and lesser-celebrated selections (Sabres of Paradise's remix of Red Snapper's "Hotflush" being the undoubted highlight).

Review: Anniversary compilations tend to fall into one of two camps, with labels either offering up a straight retrospective or a collection of previously unheard material. "Brainfeeder X", the tenth anniversary set from Flying Lotus' eclectic and experimental imprint, delivers the best of both worlds. Disc one tells the story so far, joining the dots between ambient, jazz, instrumental hip-hop, distorted techno and wonky house via cuts by the likes of Martyn, Daedelus, Taylor McFerrin, Thundercat and DJ Paypal. Disc two, meanwhile, showcases exclusive, unheard material, with highlights including the dream-time soul of Thundercat and BADBADNOTGOOD's "King of the Hill", the sunrise-ready deep house of Ross From Friends, the madcap IDM rush of Dorian Concept and the high-octane jazz-rap madness of Flying Lotus and Busdriver's "Ain't No Coming Back".

Review: If you're in the market for a beginner's guide to krautrock and "kosmiche", then the first two volumes of Soul Jazz's Deutsche Elektronische Musik series should be essential listening. This third volume - the first for four years - should be on that list, too. It arguably goes deeper than its predecessors, combining cuts from pioneering electronic and art-rock bands like Neu!, Cluster and Popol Vuh with tracks from lesser-known artists such as Michael Bundt, Dronsz and Achim Reichel. Musically, it's also far more diverse than its predecessors, containing as much space-rock and proto-punk as early electronic experimentation and droning alternative rock. As ever, the accompanying sleeve notes from author David Nobbs expand on the story in brilliant detail.

Review: ROHS! Records' first Dub Affairs compilation won the hearts and minds of many dub techno devotees when it appeared back in 2015. This second volume follows a similar blueprint - think scratchy dub techno, drone-encrusted ambient dub and spacey, intergalactic compositions - and is every bit as essential as its predecessor. Highlights include the fluttering melody lines, ultra-deep sub bass and broken rhythms of Gulls' "Inside Way (Version)", the dreamy, slow and low shuffle of "Caligari's Dub" by Bademah, and the exotic, up-tempo dub-tronica of Ondarituale's vocal number "I Segreti Di Una Generazione Di Mezzo". Best of all, though, is arguably Mystica Tribe's "The Bells", a positively loved-up trip into global dub fusion.

Review: Writer/director Nick Dwyer's Diggin in the Carts documentary series on Red Bull Music Academy has done much to chronicle the history and global influence of early Japanese video game music. Hyperdub head Kode9 was clearly a fan, as he's joined forces with Dwyer to put together this epic retrospective of "chip-era" compositions by Japanese electronic musicians. Game nerds are well catered for (details of which titles the various tracks are taken from are listed on the back cover), though you don't have to pine after early '80s consoles to enjoy the treats the duo has dug up. Naturally sparse and heavily synthesized, the majority of the tracks sound surprisingly good taken out of context (I.E without the games they were created for) and stand up to scrutiny almost 40 years after they were produced.

Review: Since leaping to more electronic ground with 2015's 'Dilate', Vessels' futuristic latest offering 'The Great Distraction' sees them plotting a course through neon-lit, industrial flecked music with its feet firmly in both post-rock and IDM, ambitiously drawing from and blending elements of the two. Highlight single 'Radiart' burns slowly, stacking up pulsating and hypnotic layers akin to Immunity era Jon Hopkins. Other tracks, such as opener 'Mobilise' and 'Position' take a more intense and polyrhythmic approach, repurposing their previous math-rock work. The production goes from feeling cavernous to incredibly close, and these deft shifts in space succeed in highlighting the build-ups and the peaks that punctuate the album. Though Vessels' sound may have changed lanes, this is an engrossing and panoramic album by a band not content with resting on their laurels.

Review: Congratulations to Hypercolour, a label more renowned for its deep and bass-heavy house output, for coaxing a new album out of eccentric veteran Luke Vibert. Happily, Ridmik - the Cornish producer's sixth solo album under his given name, and first since 2009 - is rather good. Sitting somewhere between the deep, Metro Area-inspired synth disco of Vibert's Kerrier District project and his rougher, acid-tinged work, Ridmik ebbs and flows with attractive looseness. At times woozy and melodic (see the starburst melodies and lazy rhythms of "Six Eight" and smooth title track), at others ragged and twisted (the alien 303 funk of Proper Gander), Ridmik is an impressive set of analogue workouts dripping with synthesized soul. Recommended.

Review: On his contribution to the long-running "DJ Kicks" series, Leon Vynehall has decided to take a widescreen approach, offering up a blend that showcases the depth and variety of his music collection rather than his club-rocking skills. The first half of the mix ebbs and flows with the laidback drowsiness of his selections, which flit between post trip-hop beats, ambient, IDM, electronica and crunchy post-punk pop. Midway through he begins to crank things up a notch or two via RAC's UK garage-influenced 1997 cut "Fushigi", the chunky peak-time warmth of Crinan's "Kilimanjaro" and the bass-heavy pump of Ploy's "Pressure", before unleashing some seriously intense experimental dancefloor workouts from the likes of Etch, Aphex Twin and Peach. It makes for a hugely enjoyable and at times breathtakingly brilliant musical journey.
