Country Creatures (remixes) (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: 695808 9146. Rel: 04 Nov 19
  1. Fever Ray - "This Country Makes It Hard To Fuck" (Björk remix) (3:03)
  2. Bjork - "Features Creatures" (Fever Ray remix) (4:10)
  3. Bjork - "Features Creatures" (The Knife remix) (4:38)
Review: A fierce meeting of minds you may never have expected, but that makes total sense - the mighty Bjork crossing swords with Fever Ray in an exchange of remixes with blistering results. Iceland's foremost musical visionary is in full warrior mode as she tackles Fever Ray's "This Country Makes It Hard To Fuck", delivering a nightmarish techno jackhammer full of monolithic kicks and sheet metal scrapings. Then Bjork's "Features Creatures" gets two versions from Karin Dreijer - first the Fever Ray remix that pumps and locks in an otherworldly mechanism that wouldn't sound out of place on one of Bjork's Mark Bell-produced albums. Then comes a sprightly version from Dreijer's other project, The Knife, which bounds along at an urgent pace with a skippy rhythm section and plenty of hyphy synth vamps.

Review: Melbourne trio F Ingers are formed of Tarcar pair Carla Dal Forno and Tarquin Manek along with Samuel Karmel and their Blackest Ever Black debut is some seriously drugged out, lo-fi electronics sounding like early Chris & Cosey crossed with Syd Barrett style psychedelia. Such examples of this are on tracks "Escape Into Bushes" and "Under The House Hard To Breathe". Likewise, tracks like "Blissful Cubby House" and "Useless Treasure" sound like CTI.. if they were joined by a guitarist! The perfect soundtrack for rainy Sunday afternoons after a big night out.

Review: F ingers (mind the gap) are a Melbourne based trio led by 'part time Berliner' Carla dal Forno with Tarquin Manek (her partner in Tarcar) and Samuel Karmel. Following up their debut in on London's Blackest Ever Black in 2015, this curious Aussie bunch serve up another collection of trippy lo fi electronics for getting stoned to. Recorded between 2015 and 2017, you'll be entranced as dal Forno's pure tonal vocal effects are set adrift above Manek's supple basslines and Karmel's subtle synth washes.

Review: More Than Human are based in Canada and have previously released records by Pye Corner Audio, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Ekoplekz. Their next release comes from Faten Kanaan, a Brooklyn based artist who slowly builds songs by live-looping them into a narrative, without the use of sequencers or arpeggiators. His third full-length Foxes is loosely inspired by early Surrealist automatism, made-up languages, Middle-Eastern Hakawati storytellers, and the minimalist poignancy of mimes. Here, Fatan uses sound as an intuitive gesture to tell a wordless story, exploring intimacy, anxiety, mischief and restlessness.

Review: It has taken five years for FKA Twigs to follow up her astonishing first album, "LP1". With that kind of timeframe, you can't help but have high expectations for the finished product, expectations "Magdalene" more than meets from the off. An artist in the truest sense - with every step and stage in the recording process controlled by her - it's an accomplished comeback for a woman who in the last half decade has experienced both personal loss and major physical challenges. Don't expect more of the same, then, but instead a talent finding new purpose and new confidence following difficult times. With the ever-impressive Nicolas Jaar giving a helping hand, the result is a raw, honest record that's deeply personal, full of self-reflection and, ultimately, accepting and positive. Not to mention destined to be on repeat. Her position as one of the UK's most vital and compelling acts re-confirmed.

Review: A new album from Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points is always cause for celebration, but even by his standards "Crush" is rather special. Largely eschewing the ambient jazz soundscape shuffle of 2017's "Reflections - Mojave Desert", it sees the Shepherd showcase his musical dexterity in stunning fashion via cuts that wrap shimmering neo-classical strings around what sound like modular electronics and rhythms that variously touch on broken beat, off-kilter experimental D&B and Autechre-style IDM. Of course there are ambient and experimental soundscapes showcased, but it's the fact that the album contains a swathe of formidably dancefloor-focused cuts in the style that first made him standout that pleases us most. Highlights include recent single "LesAlpx", the dreamy "Anasickmodular" and the "People's Potential" style deep house intricacy of "Last Bloom".

Review: Since releasing his first Floating Points record back in 2009, Sam Shepherd has constantly surprised. Predictably, he's done it again with Reflections: Mojave Desert, an album created from impromptu recordings of his live band made during a visit to Joshua Tree National Park. Inspired by their surroundings and the natural environment, Shepherd's ensemble have created a five-track set - and accompanying Super 8 film, shot and edited by the band's traveling visual artist - that's as atmospheric as anything the producer has released to date. While a unique proposition with its own distinctive vibe, the tracks variously touch on ambient, new age, spiritual jazz, woozy electronica, post-rock and the kind of Stockhausen-inspired experimentalism explored on Ragnar Grippe's recently reissued "Sand".

Review: Pitched somewhere between the gritty, propulsive beats of Los Angeles, and the exploratory jazz of Cosmogramma, Flying Lotus's fourth album, Until The Quiet Comes is arguably the most delicate record he's ever produced. Described as a "collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies", it steers away from bigger moments, choosing instead to present an understated patchwork of breezy jazz samples, dusty hip-hop beats smeared vocals seemingly inspired by DMT hallucinations. While previous efforts were wildly futuristic at times, Until The Quiet Comes is confidently classicist - and seals Flying Lotus's position as one of our generation's visionary producers.

Review: Arriving with some truly mind bending artwork from controversial guro manga artist Shintaro Kago, the new Flying Lotus album You're Dead! Is quite alot to take in upon first listen. Some nineteen tracks deep, Steven Ellison uses all the available space to draw you deep into the afterlife as he sees it, veering through heavily psychedelic jazz passages and next level beat explorations that demand you pay full attention. The iconic Herbie Hancock leads a high profile cast of contributing artists to Fly Lo's fifth studio LP and his most ambitious to date with Kendrick Lamar, Captain Murphy, Snoop Dogg, Angel Deradoorian, Thundercat and Niki Randa also adding to what is a transcendental listening experience.

Review: Julian House has been an integral member of Jim Jupp's Ghost Box since the imprint's inception back in the early 00s and in fact, it would be fair to say that the man's studio efforts have helped to shape the label into the beast that it is today. Famously known as being the designer for artists like Primal Scream, House's The Focus Group project is what he should be remembered for first and foremost; not only does Stop Motion Happening offer 25 tunes in all, but what is truly special about this LP is its sheer diversity and pure experimentation throughout. We're not talking about regurgitating some outsider business here, on the contrary, this man's music is one of the only things sitting on our charts that sounds truly singular in every way. From the choice of instruments to way they've been moulded, House has a knack for the bizarre and the utterly human. It's a depiction of people, places and things; beautiful, frightening and revealing all at the same time.

Review: Japanese producer Foodman has been on prolific form this year, with appearances on Plastic Bags and Sun Ark amongst other labels. While he has been known in the past for his footwork abstractions, here he's bringing his micro-sampling idiosyncracies to Palto Flats, a label more commonly associated with ambient, atmospheric fare. There are calmer moments such as "Nanika" to drift off in, but Foodman's signature approach is playful and intensely detailed, with all manner of sonic matter zipping in and out of the mix. That he manages to make the approach a pleasure to listen to is testament to the musical instinct he has to match his technical prowess - Moriyama is a record that will reward endless repeat listens with its hidden details and charming tones.

Review: Some three years after Forest Swords emerged in impressive fashion with the widely regarded Daggers Path, the Wirral based producer returns with a fuller exposition of his spectral sound on a debut album. Released quite appropriately on Tri Angle, Engravings worms its way into your cerebral cortex and the ten track set reveals itself to be a richer, more varied display of the ideas formed on that Forest Swords debut. Allegedly mixed down on a laptop whilst Forest Swords producer Matthew Barnes was camped out in the Wirral countryside, there's a sense of the exposed and organic that powerfully hits home. Highlights include the stuttering headnod of "Irby Terror" and "Onward" which sounds like Andy Stott shooting lasers in a cave.

Review: Given that Four Tet's recent 0181 LP was comprised of material from Kieran Hebden's archives, and last year's Pink was largely compiled of tracks from the previous 18 months of 12" releases, it seems fair to say that Beautiful Rewind is his first proper album since 2010's There Is Love In You, and as such, it arrives with some degree of expectation. The past few years have seen the producer engage increasingly with the dancefloor, and these rhythms are most definitely present across the LP, particularly in the jungle breaks of "Kool FM", pirate radio-influenced techno of "Buchla" and hesitant dubstep style rhythms of "Parallel Jalebi". For the most part however Beautiful Rewind is as varied as the likes of Rounds and There Is Love In You, with the minimalist kosmische of "Ba Teaches Yoga", analogue gurgles of "Crush" and dawn chorus sounds of closer "Your Body Feels" all as beautiful as his most enduring tracks.

Review: Given his ubiquity over the last 12 months, it would be fair to call 2015 'the year of Nils Frahm'. His first release of 2016 is something of a curveball, featuring as it does new remixes of tracks from his 2012 full-length, Screws, an album that the artist says was inspired by "fans and friends". Fittingly, Screws Reworked not only contains Frahm's original album - a heartfelt, poignant collection of evocative piano compositions - but also a new disc of interpretations submitted by fans. By and large, these are excellent, and veer from dusty, spaced-out ambience (see Bug Lover's remix of "You", and Helios' string-drenched version of "Re") and hushed dub techno (the Soul Channel remake of "Mi"), to lilting modern classical (Sebastian Freij's take on "La"), and glistening, stripped-back electronica (the superb Analogue Dear interpretation of "Me").

Review: Electronic experimentalist Ben Frost is renowned for making music that flits between challenging, post-punk influenced mutilated noise, and deeply atmospheric, picturesque electronica. This contrasting approach once more provides an anchor for his fifth studio album, The Centre Cannot Hold. It was recorded over ten days in Chicago and, according to interviews undertaken by Frost to promote the set, was both "an exercise in limitation and chromatic saturation" and "an attempt at transcribing a spectrum of glowing ultramarine in sound". In other words, it hurtles from dark, droning intensity to delicate and soothing, melody rich ambience.

Review: Slow Focus sees the Fuck Buttons duo of Benjamin John Power and Andrew Hung return with a third studio album, and one that marks a departure for both as it's their first release completed without the assistance of a high profile studio hand. Mogwai's John Cummings oversaw their 2008 debut album Street Horrrsing whilst revered Alan Moore lookalike Andrew Weatherall worked his magic on their excellent follow-up Tarot Sport. So how does this seven track set fare under these new circumstances? The Fuck Buttons sound is certainly no less intense without their self professed "safety net" with the familiar sound of squalling feed back dominating opening track "Brainfreeze". From here the pair touch on Holden levels of transcendence with "Year of the Dog" whilst the brutally foreboding sonic slump of "Sentience" is a considered highlight. Welcome back Fuck Buttons!

Review: The legendary Future Sound Of London have finally started dropping their Environments series on vinyl format, which will no doubt please the countless numbers of FSOL junkies out there! These sessions, the present title being the penultimate in a series of five, have been long sought after and they have been pivotal in shaping the sound of today's electronic dance music. Fifteen tracks in total here and the interesting thing about this album is the fact that it can be heard either as single tracks or as one developing and morphing wall of sound. All but one of these tracks, "Murmurations", are from way back and haven't seen the light of day, so get listening and indulge yourself in some pioneering sounds!

Review: To say that The Future Sound Of London are legendary would be an understatement. Brian Dougans and Garry Cobain continue to stupefy and amaze with this fifth chapter in the Environments series, this time allegedly exploring the space and dimensions after death. That might sound a little gloomy, but the music itself is actually surprisingly funky and upbeat. The opener itself, "Point Of Departure", is a gorgeous slap-bass beat track backed with some stupendous female vocal chops. There's a bit of everything across the thirteen tracks, such as the eerie soundscapes of "Beings Of Light", or the break-ridden lo-fi jam that is "Somatosensory". These guys have never stopped and they still mean business. Recommended.

Review: Apart from having one of the best and most singular names in electronic dance music, The Future Sound Of London have been one of the pillars of modern UK dance music, pushing through a mixture of house, techno, and breaks since the early 1990s - and, in fact, some of their tunes like "Papua New Guinea" are still getting regular play time in clubs today. While they have released a huge amount of music over the last 25 years, they've got an equally vast amount of unreleased gold in their treasure chest, a collection of tracks that have seen the light of day thanks to the present Archived series. This week it's time for the series' eighth instalment, another twelve unmissable bundles of electronic delight. However, this is a lot more than just a compilation, and the tunes work their fine mixture of melodies, breaks and electronic beats into a sublime collection of sounds. If you're into vast and explorative music with a cutting-edge, you needn't look any further.
