Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere IV
  1. A1 People - "Do It" (Metamatics remix)
  2. Kosmogonik - "Circuitry"
  3. Silicon Scally - "Relay"
  4. Matt Chester - "November Pathways"
  5. CiM - "Recursive"
Review: Since Zip and Villalobos made it one of their coveted deep digs to be heard pealing out of a thousand after hours sessions, the Metamatics remix of A1 People has been a teasingly out of reach dream grab for many a minimal electro head. Now Yossi Amoyal has done the good deed of getting the track remastered and repressed as part of his Fluere series toasting 15 years of Sushitech. As well as that masterclass of elegant machine funk, there's also Kosmogonik's mind-bendingly brilliant 'Circuitry', Silicon Scally's body-popping electro-noir 'Relay' and Matt Chester's melancholic 'November Pathways' to keep your up-all-night marathon sets peppered with spangled surprises.

Defend Your Planet
  1. The Advent & Zein Ferreira - "Defend Your Planet" (4:41)
  2. Assembler Code - "Line Of Sight" (5:19)
  3. Carl Finlow - "Syncopated Automated" (6:57)
  4. Versalife - "SH09" (6:02)
Review: This is a special sampler 12" taken from the Various Artists compilation Defend Your Planet that Avoidant Records put out. It features a heavyweight crew of electro mainstays, first of which are The Advent & Zein Ferreira. Their 'Defend Your Plane' is a turbo powered cosmic assault with skewed synths and high speed drums. Assembler Code's 'Line Of Sight' doesn't let up, powering on through sheet metal snares and juddering drum programming and then man like Carl Finlow layers in prickly melodies, dark sci-fi energy and booming bass. Analogue master Versalife shits things down with the shadowy 'SH09.'

  5. The Masters (4:06)
  6. My Computer (4:15)
Review: The latest 12" on the matter of factly named Detroit techno label comes from the boss Mollison Folson aka Body Mechanic. Opener 'Ghetto Tek' is a minimal techno tick with a rugged rhythm and cold sound design. The Beatprocessor Repimp rework flips it into a more punchy electro jam with sleaze and streetwise swagger and 'MIBA' then plays with bendy bass and bare house kicks. There is real future cyborg funk on the restless 'Relay' which has beautifully programmed kicks and hits. 'The Masters' and 'My Computer' are two squelchy, mechanical electro bangers you'd only get from Detroit.

  1. Fata Morgana (5:21)
  2. Hidden Key (5:40)
  3. Two Minutes To Midnight (6:44)
  4. Elephant's Toothpaste (5:46)
Review: The Partout label turns its attention back to its UK series with a fine four tracker here from Bufo Bufo. The whole thing is steeped in UK sounds with elements of rave never far away. 'Fata Morgana' has a dumpy beat that swings from one foot to the other while old school stabs light up the track from above. 'Hidden Key' ups the ante with a more hard hitting groove and more old school motifs, this time in the bass. 'Two Minutes To Midnight' is the waviest of the lot with sirens going off, rinsing breakbeats and turbo charged bass going deep. 'Elephant's Toothpaste' then cut up a more lumpy groove with bleeps and pulses making it a soothing groove for 5am.

  1. Forest Virus (6:53)
  2. Bollywood (7:16)
  3. Marvin's Track (5:24)
  4. Celestial Atmosphere (6:39)
Review: Just when you thought the pandemic couldn't get more complicated, along comes Saverio Celestri with a whole new variant. Welcome 'Forest Virus', even more contagious and infectious than Corona but, thankfully, about 10,000,000 times more enjoyable. Four tracks deep, each one promises total respite and escapism from the current strange reality; 'Forest Virus' doffs its cap to Detroit with its synth simplicity and relentless drive, 'Bollywood' takes us to the starts with maximal effect; stomping kicks, swampy pads and Orbital-style waves of synths, 'Marvin's Track' is an emotional bulldozer that gets more and more intense as more instruments are introduced mid-way before 'Celestial Atmosphere' closes with a sense of church-like scale and sobriety while remaining raw and about as clean as the discarded facemasks you see in many gutters right now.

Review: Although he's now one of the global electro scene's most admired and storied producers, there was a time when Philip Washington's releases as Cygnus were largely ignored. That was certainly the case with Cybercity Z Ro, his debut album, when it was originally released way back in 2012. Yet as this first ever vinyl pressing proves, it remains one of his most stunning collections of cuts. It does of course contain a high number of superb, sci-fi-fired electro workouts, but also atmospheric and immersive tracks that variously combine elements of acid, IDM, ambient and, perhaps most surprisingly, dub techno. If the album passed you by eight years ago, make sure you check it out this time around: we guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

Review: In 2020, electro continued to be one of the most popular underground sounds and that continues into 2021. It is two of the most interesting artists around who team up here for six stylish and dreamy electro cuts filled with cinematic design and all recorded under the mysterious CYWU moniker. These are kinetic grooves overload with cosmic synths, deft designs and imbued with plenty of otherworldly spirt to truly transport you from this planet and into the next dimension. 'Spring Space' is a real standout as is the icy excellence of 'Unending Glaciers.'

  1. Confusion (5:18)
  2. Copas (5:29)
  3. Sombras (5:18)
  4. Delirio (5:41)
Review: Ambien Baby's Isla label is back at it with a new release from Dosis, and it's a hot one. Steeped in noirish electro and minimal wave moods, the lead track 'Confusion' strikes a mood somewhere between vintage Dopplereffekt, Front 242 and Doxa Sinistra with Spanish vocals. 'Copas' is more evocative, using an electro template to express a melancholy which stands apart from the gutter-dwelling creepiness found elsewhere on the EP. 'Sombras' strikes a balance between the two extremes, whereas 'Delirio' submits to a more pure machine-rooted abandon punctuated by a tough rhythm, and does so in style.

  1. Moderated Lies (4:59)
  2. The Least Resistance (5:46)
  3. Propeller (4:59)
  4. Logicphrenia (5:37)
Review: Alex Jann continues to be a vital force within the contemporary electro scene. Following standout spots on Unknown To The Unknown, DMK and Censor over the past couple of years, he now lands on Burnski's Infiltrate label with some especially taut, heads-down gear for those looking to stretch out the dynamics of their machine funk DJ sets. 'Moderated Lies' is a snappy, eerie workout with a rasping snare and nagging low-end synth hook, while 'The Least Resistance' works deeper dimensions of texture and atmosphere around a snaking beat. 'Propeller' is a more malevolent affair that ups the tempo and fires off a more snarling, acidic sound palette. 'Logicphrenia' revels in the richest sound design of the EP, sounding like an orchestra of malfunctioning machines locked into a serious groove. That's a good thing, obviously.

Review: Legendary Detroit electro don and BPM basher DJ Stingray and breakbeat master Skee Mask both land on the Ahead of Our Time label with superb remixes. Keleketla! started as a project by Ninja Tune co-founders Coldcut and a cadre of South African musicians and now two of their tracks get reworked by two of electronic music's finest. 1. Unity 07 (6:59)
  2. Pye Nuts (5:32)
  3. Muchroom (7:58)
Review: The Partout label's UK-centric series rolls on apace with a fresh offering from Loosewomen. As exciting as it would be to hear the UK daytime TV crew who host a show of that name making electro, we can only assume this actually an alias of someone else. 'Unity 07' bangs from the off with bubbling synths and massive old school breaks while 'Pye Nuts' pulls pack to a more minimal jungle groove with rubbery rhythm and a bleeping lead that's finished in euphoric style with a vocal yelp. 'Muchroom' is a heads down, foot stomping back room banger that closes the EP in style.

Review: Electronic Leatherette's Heretic Electro imprint returns with this tasty timeless trio of tracks from German soul-mover Low Tape. All tapping into that primordial analogue soup from which we still all sup today, 'Summernesia' pays homage to that mid 80s US proto house and the charm of the likes of Mr Fingers, 'What Is The Meaning Of Life' takes us deeper into the cosmic cosmos with a weave of guitar twangs and Ozric meanderings before 'Lights Out' closes on a brooding dystopian electro tip. Beautiful.

Review: Mysterious Australian electro artist Reptant has a lavish, lizard based back story to his debut album that hangs around him getting help from the so-called 'Gecko Force' to protect his home planet, X'trapolis. Other than that, it has always been his searing electro sounds that have done all his talking, and now we get the fullest offering of those yet on this fantastic album which comes on the label he runs, LKR, outta Melbourne. After an atmosphere-setting opener it's a full throttle journey through the cosmos with inventive rhythms, sheet metal snares and a wealth of aline life forms all colouring the grooves.

Review: Stoic techno veteran Kurt Baggaley dons his Scape One alias to kick off a new year with this powerful four-tracker on new Mixcult subsidiary Believe In Records. As you'd expect from the man of many aliases and strong pedigree for experimenting, it's a total trip... 'With Some Flash People' is the banger of the bunch with its plunging, robust beats while the remainder of the EP gets more and more fantastical the deeper we dig into it: 'Cosmic Jam' is a planet-bouncing dreamer, 'Colours By Numbers' takes us into 7 or 8am territory with its gentle ebb and flow pads and slo-mo break rolls before 'Different Worlds, Same Stories' takes us on arpeggio stairway beyond the clouds. Sit comfortably.

Review: Earlier this year, Sepehr released his debut album Shaytoon on Dark Entries. Now he repurposes that name, which means "little devil" in farsi, for his own label, a platform he says he will use to explore his dual Iranian-American heritage while showcasing artists from what he thinks is an underrated Iranian scene. This first EP is a real head turner, with icy wave sounds permeating the deep techno and slippery, cosmic electro tracks contained within. Each one is inventive and fresh with an atmosphere all its own. While 'Crown Jewel' is all warm and rubbery, 'Head To The Sky' is much more busted and frazzled.

Review: Macedonian producer Stojche joins the Infiltrate stable for a bout of classy, moody electro with bags of personality hot on the heels of his Urban Chaos LP for Tangible Assets. 'Trauma' builds towards an emotive crescendo, while 'Phobia' twitches in a more dystopian framework that rushes at a formidable tempo. 'Thug Life' keeps things edgy with razor-sharp lead lines that shimmer and shudder around the hard-stepping beat. 'Conflict' rounds things out with a more melancholic mood shaped out by choice chords that drape themselves over the snap of the snare and rapid hats.

Review: Save The Books launched in October 2020 with a release from Russian producers DJ Snils and Every Korner, and now they're back with this sureshot from TX. 'No Bio' is a spellbinding track that ranks amongst the finest electro drops of the year, plumbing some serious depths thanks to a warm and cosy pad tone while keeping the rhythmic elements fresh and engaging. 'Decent' taps into a particular thread of electro that favours a more expressive sound palette beyond the rote 808 hits commonly used elsewhere, calling to mind the clubbier end of Ultramarine in the process. 'Waves of Enceladus' is the consummate B2, cooling things down to explore a more mellow dimension of the TX sound with sparkling results.
