Heartbreak
Heartbreak (12" + insert)
Cat: OTLR 001. Rel: 13 Nov 20
  1. Heartbreak (4:25)
  2. 6000 Ft (5:40)
Review: Simon 'Bonobo' Green launches his own label Outlier, operating under the umbrella of Ninja Tune, the label - along with Tru Thoughts - that he's been most closely associated with. To kick things off, he's cooked up something suitably sizable with pal Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Lead cut 'Heartbreak' is an absolute beast and sounds like a future anthem in the making. Supposedly intended as a tribute to NYC disco but arguably nothing of the sort, it sees the pair pepper a bustling, bass-heavy, rave-style breakbeat groove with organ stabs, sparkling synth sounds and choice vocal snippets from Classic Action classic 'Weekend'. They explore far deeper, drowsier territory on the atmospheric, melody-driven flipside, '6000 Ft', once again opting to employ waves of colourful electronics and chunky low-end sounds.

  5. CDN - "60313" (3:45)
Review: German imprint FreiTanzPlatten, or simply FTP, has been rocking hard since their first records began appearing back in 2017, and they've been solidly flying off our shelves ever since. It's no surprise, however, because these are phat-ass electro tunes that will undoubtedly kill just about any soul on the dance floor - and off it! As per usual, this is a collaborative flex, with each player bringing something fresh and equally deathly to the cause - the likes of Erotek, Zolaa, Detroit's Filthiest, Textasy and CDN all spread the hatred in a beautiful way, slinging and slewing that bone-head gear like it's a warehouse rave in Detroit, back in the golden era. Tough, mean... and utterly recommended!

  4. Fatdog - "Jaffa Cakes" (6:12)
Review: Fatdog Records returns after a break, offering contributions from 3 artists new to the label - The Rutan, Tom Mc Connell and Mark Hand. FDR003 offers a development from the deep house template on the last EP, this time taking us further into deeper Detroit territories. Mark Hand offers us Drexciyan techno in the form of 'Cold Feet'. The Rutan's 'Fable' sits somewhere between Vakula and some of Henrik Schwarz's earlier dub-house experiments, while Fat Dog takes us to the murky back alleys of his mind with 'Jaffa Cakes'. Finally Tom Mc.Connell's 'Juniper' takes us into wonkier groove Rhodes stylings which rounds off the EP very nicely indeed. Review: It's been some six years since Caroline "Miss Kittin" Herve and Michel "The Hacker" Amato last delivered fresh material together. While we await further news of their long-mooted comeback, there's this tasty EP of previously unheard archive material to enjoy. Made up of tracks recorded between 1997 and '99 - when their production partnership was in its' infancy - The Lost Tracks Volume 1 contains a number of fuzzy, stylish, floor-friendly bangers, from the S&M-themed madness of opener "Leather Forever" and stripped-back electro gem "Nightlife" (a tribute to Berlin clubs of the period, apparently), to the high-tempo acid-loaded freakishness of "Loving The Alien". Top-notch sleaze.

Review: The XCPT Music label continues to establish itself as a go-to outlet for those who like freaky late night sounds. Like previous instalments of the Time Dance series, this various artists affair is a wild collisions of creative styles. There's the restless and kinetic techno malfunctions of "FB2THSN", deep drum patterns of "Amino Acid Side Chains" and footwork made of DJ Plant Texture's "Yeah Boy" on the first side alone. The flip goes hard and dark with the industrial bass of "Konnor 3012", frenzied electro of "Pirate Utopias" and dystopian sound-scaping that is "AVP" .

Review: Brand new label from Almeria, Spain, Masa Series sits precariously between acid, techno, electro and Detroit on this fascinating launch release. Running the full gamut, we start with the brittle electro of Natural Language and Texture's ice cold 'Blitzar' before descending into squat party chaos on 6tma's 'Robert De Lirio'. Flip for the soul soothing electro of Tony & Hawk's 'Who Lands Drones' before Roger Van Lunteren closes the show with the swashbuckling big beats and acid off 'Red (Touchee)', a track that wouldn't have gone amiss in the Heavenly Social back in the day. More of this please.

Review: Contort Yourself reaches its sixth installment with yet another era spanning gathering of post-punk and industrial oddities for the most deviant of dancefloors to digest. In the contemporary corner we have Penelope's Fiance, a promising industrial artist from Greece. Meanwhile on the B-side, Nigel Ayers as Nocturnal Emissions takes us back to 1983 with the utterly chilling "Demon Circuits Bloodbath" and "Even The Good Times Are Bad". L.I.E.S boss Ron Morelli steps up as U202 to remix "Even The Good Times Are Bad" as a death march of malevolent percussion.

  6. Tech-Acid (3:49)
Review: As much as we love keeping our ears to the ground, this new release from DJ Sotofett's personal WANIA imprint is leaving us guessing at every turn. The music, of course, is utterly on-point, as per usual, but we know little to nothing in regards to the mysterious Tech-Droppers. Taking much more of an electro spin compared to the imprint's more natural approach around techno, this feels like the right place for Wania to be exploring, and this is especially true if every track sounds as hot as this! The first three cuts on the A-side all offer different infusions of industrial high-tek, kicking off with the synth-driven "Crystal-Tech", followed by the rougher, more bass-centric approach of "Acid-Tech", and then onto the moodier, more broken arrangement of "Crystal-Dub". On the flip, "Tech-Strobe" is all wave and far-out vibes, while "Strobe-Revenge" churns out a beat spun the wrong way, and "Tech-Acid" bleeps its gentle waves of acid alongside Wania's characteristic atmospherics. Killer!

Review: MinimalRome comes through with a fourth instalment of their Urbi Et Orbit (which means "to the city and to the world") series and once more it brings together six sizzling hot artists juxtaposing Rome-based producers to others around the globe. Plant43 might be the best known name and he offers up a searing electro trip with intense synth work and Heinrich Dressel gets for a beautiful ambient soundscape that will sooth mind, body and soul. Add in other gems like the rugged and off-grid electro bomb that is 'More Detections' by Microthol and you have a real winner on your hands.

Review: Mr Blatman's Lunar Orbiter Program follows up some great EPs by Krypton 81, Cyan85 and Turk Turkelton with this killer one by mysterious newcomer Torai. All that we do know at this stage is that he is a young DJ/producer from Manchester making his debut on vinyl, and is said to be the legendary Mr. G's nephew - if the Soundcloud comments are anything to go by. He serves up four Drexciyan electro jams straight outta the future on the "Sensory Deprivation" EP: from the acid inflected first wave Motor City funk of "Fr34k" (think Model 500), to B side cuts like "Fright" which goes for that classic bass-driven sci-fi vibe and the emotive minimal beats of closer "Eleccy".

Review: Domenico Torti is best known for his high profile remixes of Daft Punk, but this outing on Ed Banger finds him indulge in his first love: the sounds, colours and scenes of New York City in the 1980s. To help authenticate his quest, he enlists expert beat maker Afrika Bambaataa. Their single "Radar" is a wild disco ride with electro synth work and plenty of future retro motifs, from the vocoder vocals to the sounds of spacecrafts taking off. Deena Abdelwahed flips it into a heavy drum work out with rising chords, Dimitri From Paris layers in brilliantly funky bass and Adesse Versions and Borussia go for jacking club workouts.

Review: Amsterdam based Tom Ruijg has been producing since 2010 but has really come into his own under the alias Tracey. He serves up some seriously emotive and reflective modern electro for Aus Music on the Metamorphosis EP, which follows up some great releases of late for locals Tom Trago's Voyage Direct and on Midland's Intergraded label. From the sublime and hypnotic title track, to the moody sci-fi bounce of "Blue Invasion" and the old school analogue soul of "Helix" reminiscent of Detroit legends like Dopplereffekt or Drexciya - Ruijg proves his uncanny ability to summon those ghosts in the machine on this impressive release.

Review: Long-serving electro project Transparent Sound come back full throttle with this expansive album of masterful machine music. Opening track "Pretend Like You Care" is a startling opener that feels like a wormhole back to the Cologne laboratories of the kosmische movement. The beats kick in proper from that point, and in consummate noirish fashion, with "No Call From New York", and proceed to trip through all manner of nocturnal dreamscapes lit in sleazy neon strip lighting. It's a lurid, evocative sound world the veteran duo concoct, and one you'll find yourself returning to again and again.

  1. What Is Your Name? (vocal mix) (7:10)
  2. What Is Your Name? (instrumental) (6:02)
  3. What Is Your Name? (Acidulant remix) (6:41)
Review: The resurgent Transparent Sound outfit (made up of UK electro veterans Orson Bramley and Martin Brown) have been riding high since their classic "Punk Motherfucker" got picked up for a reissue from Pressure Traxx, finding favour with the Club der Visionaere set. They're back on their own label with a rich and plentiful EP loaded with robotic box jams, leading in with the dark and seductive body popping beatdown "What Is Your Name?". The vocal mix is killer, but there's also the added bonus of an instrumental take for those who prefer a pure machine sound. Acidulant also steps up with a blinding remix that does a great service to the original, threading some seriously nasty synth wriggles and wobbles into the mix.

Review: Transparent Sound came back with some big reissues last year and finally continue that purple patch with a new serving of some serious acid techno from 1996. The title track kicks off this welcome package with blistering electro drum work and manic 303 lines. It's a scintillating cut of crispy hits and alien energy, then 'Remanisance' takes us back to broken beat heaven. The synths are manic and cosmic and the drums are crunchy, and the pull between the two is simply lovely. A final remix of 'Remanisance' skews it through another acid filter with curling lines and hammering drums working you into a frenzy.

Review: Traditionally, Darko Esser's outings as Tripeo have tended towards the hypnotic and trance inducing. It's notable, then, that his latest EP - the first Tripeo 12-inch for 18 months - mixes things up a little. "Food For Thought", for example, fixes melancholic, Convextion style musicality to crunchy, EBM-influenced techno drums, while the fuzzy, dirt-encrusted "Resist" sees the producer give deep electro an angular, lo-fi makeover. "Tuesday Blues", meanwhile, sees him stack layer upon layer of positive electronic melodies atop rubbery, Afro-house influenced techno drums before Bassiani/Horoom resident HVL rounds things off with his skittish, breakbeat-powered revision of "Food For Thought", which sounds like a giddy blast from the past despite the poignant nature of Esser's melodies.

Review: After putting it on hiatus three years ago, Detroit electro legend Keith Tucker has decided to bring back the Puzzlebox label he launched with Anthony 'Shake' Shakir way back in 1995. He's at the controls for this comeback release, which astonishingly is also the sometime Aux88 member's first solo single since 2015. He kicks things off with "Modular World", a creepy but funk-fuelled slab of intergalactic electro that boasts whispered vocals, spacey sounds and the same up-tempo energy levels as Aux88's 1990s output. Over on the flip it's all about "Schematixs", a bleeping and unearthly affair that sits somewhere between Kraftwerk and Egyptian Lover.

Review: Back in December 2019, Lunar Orbiter Program added Turk Turkleton to its roster via a fine split EP with fellow electro cosmonaut (and sometime Central Processing Unit contributor) Cyan85. Now they've given the mysterious artist a chance to shine via a debut solo EP. It's a quietly impressive affair containing four fine cuts, all of which boast stupendously sturdy drums and tons of intergalactic electronics. Our pick of a very strong bunch is 'Rock It', a throbbing peak-time workout smothered in undulating acid lines and razor-sharp electronic riffs. That said, there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP, including chunky, funk-fuelled opener 'Safe' and rumbling Drexciya-esque closing cut 'X-Statione'.

Review: Tel Aviv born, Berlin based duo TV.OUT make their Dark Entries debut with a 6-track EP titled 'Dust Till Dawn' out Black Friday 2019. Doron Mastey Charly & Ori Itshaki have made a name for themselves the past few years putting on impressive live sets, DJing around the world, and running Parallax Records releasing various strains of rugged, well informed electronic music. Clocking in at 36 minutes this collection moves in hot pursuit of their two previous EPs for L.I.E.S. Side A opens with the metallic hi-hats of "Morning Light" that echoes early Euro/Goa techno-EBM sound to the 8-minute sleek, pounding industrial darkroom vibes of "Sun" and closes with the titanium-tipped 808 warped electro of "War Zone". Side B leads off with the heavy New Beat scorcher "Lord", a song we first heard on a mix from Cardopusher and knew we had to release. Then comes "Product Of My Environment" a slow-motion mutant menace that flows into the final song "Slippery Slope" a classic West Coast of The Hague '90s style electro perfectly suited for complete dance floor drama. All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in jacket designed by Eloise Leigh with black-white-red apocalyptic vibes and bold type.
