Review: Regular sparring partners Barbir and Nicola Kazimir join forces once more, this time for an outing on Melliflow. This time round, they've taken electro as their starting point, tweaking the blueprint in a number of ways throughout. So, while opener "Apex_2.0" features the distinctive rhythmic tick of an electro beat, the actual drum sounds are crunchy and organic, with the acid lines that surround it being notably wild. "Nueue_1.0", on the other hand, sounds like a live drummer trying to keep up with an accompanying beatbox, while someone plays stargazing chords on a dusty old synth. Flipside cuts "Project_7575" and "Project_888_Crybeta" are both deeper and more intricate affairs, moving closer towards bubbly IDM territory whilst retaining the weightiness of dancefloor electro.

Review: A bonafide Salon Des Amateurs dubplate has finally landed! A wonderful 15+ minute opus created some years ago during Tako and Jonny's Sombrero Galaxy project, this was the result of a chance trip to Ralf Beck's Dusseldorf HQ and has been a staple for select DJs ever since. Select DJs such as Vladimir Ivkovic who has firmed it up for his own Offen imprint and commissioned two industrial strength remixes in the process... Musiccargo's Gordon Pohl lays down a brutal halftime dirge while Gilb'R flips to his Gilbert Cohen guise for a percussion-heavy mystical freak out. Beautiful.

  3. Amato - "Sueur Et Poussiere" (6:13)
  4. DJ Overdose - "Industry Repeats" (4:55)
Review: As ways to introduce a new label go, this first outing from Hearse is pretty special. It's something of an all-star affair, with cuts from scene stalwarts and a lovely screen-printed sleeve. To kick things off, old pals Neil Landstrumm and Si Begg join forces on talkbox-sporting ja, "The Pusher (M)", where bleeping melodies and intergalactic electronics cluster around a mind-altering electro groove. The Exaltics offer up a razor-sharp slab of arpeggio-driven 4/4 electro insanity ("00045.00.2"), while Amato smothers an EBM/industrial funk style beat in foreboding electronic riffs and suitably wonky modular motifs. It's left to DJ Overdose to close proceedings, something he does in style via the distorted drums and mangled electronics of industrial electro workout "Industry Repeats".

  3. Roche - "One For Cherushii" (8:01)
  4. David Last - "All That's Left" (feat Lavender - dance mix) (5:51)
Review: Besides its inimitable name, Hobo Camp has had a pretty unbeatable first few years in the game, switching up the electro sound with shades of loopy house and techno. These guys have released over two dozen EPs since 2016, and are showing no signs of stopping if this new collaborative release is anything to by! Pumping the vibes through with utter ease, Run The Length Of Your Wilderness is a daring, rip-roaring amalgamation of tech-driven sounds that span just about every quality corner of the game. "The Industrial City", from Cherushii, moans and weeps with a fragile acid bassline over broken percussion beats, while Nackt's "Next" floats at a house tempo, driven forwards by a winding bass from the darkest corners of the 4/4 game. On the flip, Roche's "One For Cherushii" bigs up his counterpart with a deep, aqueous house chugger, and David Last's "All That's Left" drops a clean, sparkly prog house groover for the lovers.

  2. Neud Photo - "Indeks"
  3. Antoni Maiovvi - "The Dig"
Review: Helena Hauff's label is back, this time presenting a various artists 12" that heralds the start of the No Return series. The release starts on a mystical bent with the Eastern-tinged death electro of "El Carmel", sounding ripe for a Hague-friendly warm-up session. Neud Photo then take over with a dystopian trip through rich synth tones coloured in dark hues for the bleakest of robotic fantasies. Antoni Maiovvi fills the B-side with the slow grinding bombast of "The Dig", bleeding out a noirish take on coldwave for the darkest hearts to swoon to.

  3. Fallen (3:35)
  4. Abandonded Virtues (6:01)
Review: REPRESS: This is the sort of record that could only have been made by someone with a vast amount of experience. Producer Nick Dunton has a decade's worth of releases behind him, and it shows. Sketches Of My Life veritably skips between electronic sounds and styles. It's deeply rooted in techno and electronica - and specifically the clean futurisms of Detroit's Belleville three - but steadfastly refuses to stick to one particular groove. "Once" offers heady dub techno enriched by cascading piano figures, "Lost Love" bittersweet electro. "Fallen" and "Abandoned Virtues", meanwhile, evoke memories of teenage nights lost in the otherworldly sounds of Warp's pioneering Artificial Intelligence compilations.

Review: Distorted Sensory Perception is a new label emerging out of the Bristol underground to represent the deeper end of the techno and electro scene. The first release is a various artists affair that kicks off with the bold and expressive sound of rising talent Gilbert, last spotted on two excellent Innate releases. Mindless Evolving Objects takes a similar approach laden with harmonious pads and twinkling arps, while Datawave takes things in a darker direction without losing that melodic nous. Label founder Zobol has an emotive bent in his track "Scatterbrain," and Nikolay Sunak completes the set with the illustrious "Dance & Cry Baby."

  4. Nachtzug - "Wetman" (4:59)
  5. Retape - "Mysteron1" (2:54)
  6. J Wiltshire - "Emporium" (3:07)
Review: In typically techno fashion, Berlin crew Mindcolormusic is keeping tight lipped about their latest multi-artist missive, presumably preferring to let the music speak for itself. That's probably a wise move, because there's plenty of electro gold amongst the six scintillating tracks on offer. We're particularly enjoying the fizzing, Drexciya-style assault of Retape's "Mysteron 1", the wild, mind-altering braindance madness of J Wiltshire's "Emporium" - think D'Arcangelo after a few too many glasses of cheap orange squash, and you're close - and the classic Detroit electro pulse of Robert Hect and XY0815's fine EP opener, "Igriegia05". That said, some of the deeper and melodious offerings tucked away elsewhere on the EP are also well worth a listen.

  4. Exterminador - "Alien Landscapes" (4:48)
Review: In some ways, And Silently Vanish Away is an odd title for an EP packed with tracks that linger long in the memory. Certainly, electro heads will appreciate the heavy 808 hits, droning bass and fluttering, deep space electronics of Exterminador's brilliant "Alien Soundscapes", not to mention the trippy, delay-laden vocal samples, warped hardware melodies and scuttling drum machine rhythms of NGLY and Exterminador's "Broken Flowers". We're big fans, too, of Hinode's bustling, razor-sharp opener "Mission4" - the kind of track that would leap out of a DJ mix and send you rushing online to find out its identity - and the fuzzy, dust-encrusted techno hum of DJ Nephil's hypnotic "Codex".

Review: Hungarian producer Imre Kiss inaugurates his new Crisis imprint after several acclaimed releases for top labels such as Lobster Theremin, Mork and Farbwechsel in the last few years. The tracks presented here on the Ad Astra EP are in collaboration with homeboy Norwell (Pinkman/Beachcoma/New Flesh) who have a mutual sonic interest: sci-fi narratives and analogue dedication - combined to reinterpret and evolve the blueprint of electro that it draws influence from. There are expressions in brooding, gothic/noir-ish electro like the title track and "Density Waves", while "Motor City Dreams" or "Alpha Hertz" go for typically bass heavy and dystopian themes from a 313 state of mind.

Review: Eccentric imprint Les Points returns for the first time in 2018, bringing with it a quartet of cuts from "Various Xenopunks". Louh kicks things off with a fizzing, saucer-eyed techno shuffler that fixes classic electro chords and Motor City melodies to a bustling and forthright rhythm track, before Nicola Kazimir dips a mentalist, bass-heavy electro workout in modular distortion and a variety of mind-altering spoken word samples. Over on side B, Walid's "Posterior Spinneret" is a fine chunk of end-of-days electro with added foreboding noises, while Audinio's "Venus Flytrap" is the kind of wonky, acid-fired romp that would once have formed part of Rephlex Records' Braindance series of releases.

Review: Despite the UK's decision to go it alone, the spirit of cross-European collaboration goes on. Here, Rotterdam's Pinkman Records joins forces with Zurich-based Lux Rec for a very special, one-off 12". Dutch producer Ian Martin handles side A, first delivering the crystalline synthesizer melodies, ghostly chords and foreboding notes of "Mirage", before blasting into space via the woozy Italo-disco hustle of "Synthetic Liberation". Regular studio buddies Barbie and Nicola Kazimir are reunited on the flip, lacing foreboding chords over bubbly, off-kilter drum machine rhythms on the krautrock-influenced "Electronische Sequenz Prolet". They also round off proceedings with a dash of sub-heavy electro, "Gerausch".

Review: Oh yes, it's a new blockade of high-class Finnish techno in the shape of a DUM bomb! Mono Junk's label has seen a revival as of late, both in terms of sought-after reissues, and new techno missiles with that unmistakable sound that made this label so special. It's a family thang with this new single, aptly named the Finnish Electro All Star EP, a five-tracker offering a supremely diverse collection of tunes ranging from downright electro thrashings to more techno-spirited arrangements. Morphology's opener "Vector Plant" is rooted in the Drexciyan tradition, whereas Irwin Berg's "Love Me" blurs the lines between power electronics and...no, it's just straight-up industrial madness. The flipside starts off with "Almost There" by Mr Velcro Fastener, a deep, melodic electro excursion, Mono Junk's own "Feeling Or Destroy" delivers some heavier bass nastiness on the low end, and "Shortcut" from the New York City Survivors packs one last, powerful punch to the senses with its curiously grime-like bassline. A hotly recommended affair...

  2. Lineas Angola (Nozjina Shangaan Electro Sansana remix)
Review: Danny Wolfers once again graces the excellent Kindred Spirits label with some more afro inspired shenanigans as Nacho Patrol - backed with a Shangaan electrofied remix from Nozjina! Those who haven't indulged in Wolfer's Nacho Project material will find this a near perfect primer, as "Lineas Angola" demonstrates the prolific Dutchman to be equally adept at working on a shifted tempo as he is at the standard mid 120 range, spreading out an almost haunted acid line over shuffling shakers and melodians. In contrast, Nozinja ramps up the tempo further, implementing devilish edits and scattergun lo-fi melodic touches for a remix every bit as singular sounding as the 2010 Honest Jon's compilation upon which Shangaan Electro was given a wider audience.

Review: The woolly jumper wearing don known as Legowelt (real name Danny Wolfers) turns to his Nacho Patrol alias for the Africa Jet Band Experience on M Division. Here we are treated to six tracks of hazy analogue disco, with the dense gurgling chaos of "Fuzz Party" our pick of the A-Side offerings. It's a tougher call on the flip, with the frantic lo-fi antics of "No Angry People" and "Ghetto Compressor" both getting frequent play on the Juno office 1210. We shouldn't be surprised when Wolfers drops such an excellent array of tracks on us; he has one of the best collections of analogue kit on earth, and, importantly, knows how to use it - but once again he's left us gazing adoringly at his work. This serves as the perfect vinyl-shaped addendum to the full Africa Jet Band Experience album, which hit the CD shelves this week.

Review: Deeply concerned with the here and now versus sister label Was/Is' electro archaeology, Is/Was delivers the goods once again with this various artists 12" zeroed in on the Pittsburgh scene. You can feel the Steel City tension reverberating in Naeem's edgy beatdown "Forward Facing", while Hits Only takes things in a slightly cleaner, modernist direction that aligns with some of the UK soundsystem interpretations of electro that have emerged in recent years. Shawn Rudiman takes control for the B side with two jams that tip their cap to the veteran producer's long and accomplished career, but they sound as fresh as anything else on the record too. "Derelict" is a gnarly, bloated banger of a track, and "Asimolar" takes the route towards Cybotron, Kraftwerk and the truly foundational version of electro in all its lysergic glory.

Review: Polish producer, graphic designer and writer/poet Karol Gwozdz aka Nail joins German label Dominance Electricity, who's hosted Blastromen, Dynamik Bass System and legends Jackal & Hyde in the past. The Silesia-based artist's vinyl debut comes in the form of "Revelation" - a brooding and majestic electro epic with vocoder lyrics in the same vein as legend Anthony Rother. This is followed up by the fierce and functional electro-bass workout "1987" on the flip. Proper heads down tackle which also comes with a handy "Arpeggio Bonus" where he shines the spotlight on the track's glistening, sublime arpeggio melody.
