Review: Jorge Caiado certainly keeps busy. When not running the Carpet & Snares (and its affiliated shop), the Groovement label or doing A&R for Chez Damier's long running Inner Balance Music imprint, he's releasing some brilliant music - as heard on this year's Choice EP - one of our favourite records of this year. He now presents some new deep space transmissions via his Lisbon HQ, under new alias Conversion here and inaugurating the eponymous imprint. Reflective electro, Motor City techno and beatless trips are explored, dedicated to sonic excursions away from his housier roots.

  3. Kaelan - "Meandering Rivers" (Jasper Wolff & Maarten Mittendorff remix) (5:30)
  4. Stojche - "The Exchange" (Gian Hydrocity Refix) (5:40)
Review: Blackhall & Bookless have been pursuing a fantastic strain of house and techno via their Jaunt label for many moons now. They're back and celebrating 10 years with a series of fantastic remixes that highlight the scope of their artistic vision, and that of those close to them. Inland leads in with an oceans deep version of the label bosses' "Spirit", which is smartly followed up by Jonas Kopp's equally submersive take on Hiver's "Itria". Jasper Wolff and Maarten Mittendorff lets the swooning "Meandering Rivers" by Kaelan burst its banks and fill out an expansive landscape, while Stojche pings Gian's "The Exchange" out into an electro-speckled cosmos.

Review: Curtis Electronix is a brand new electro label out of Holland (where else?) run by CEM3340. The label is said to be is inspired by Doug Curtis, the father of the "CEM" chip as well as being a synthesizer pioneer and innovator, and the boss himself is behind this notable first EP. His brand of electro is a crunchy one, with distorted drums frying brains and computerised synth arps jagging their way about the mix. Next to three busy, textured originals is a remix from The Exaltics that is as raw as they come.

  3. Untitled (feat Patrik Sjeren)
  4. 3c 273
Review: FXHE maintain their monthly heat emission for 2012, with label boss Omar S displaying all aspects of his production prowess (as well as skill for a humorous track titles) across four productions - one of which features the button bashing assistance of one Patrik Sjeren. There's something icily brilliant about the restrained "Income Tax Refund Dance" melding a dark piano riff with snapping 808 kicks and rippling lo fi rhythms which only further justifies the title of Omar S's killer 2011 LP. It's complemented by the far rowdier box jam "The White Castle Song" which jackhammers a simple yet highly flammable key riff over low rent percussion for FXHE's most potent ode to the perfect warehouse moment since the all conquering "Here's Your Trance..." Given the lack of additional info, we presume the Patrik Sjeren that produces the B Side "Untitled" track is the same Patrik Sjeren that released in the mid 90s under a multiplicity of aliases, and his contribution is every bit as incendiary as the track preceding it, whilst "3c 273" sees Omar S slip into pensive utopian electro mode with aplomb.

Aftershocks Volume 1 kicks off with a particularly bold remix by Klakson boss Dexter who turns Old Boy's "Tracer" into an electro-bass monster, James Shinra (Analogical Force) channels the best of the Motor City on his emotive rework of Arctor's "Memory Gene" rounding up the A side. On the flip, Arctor remains the focus, with remixes of "Selfish Lover" by Forward Strategy Group's Patrick Walker and Hungarian newcomer David Harleydson impressed us likewise with his fierce and futurist perspective of "The Gulf".

  3. League Of Voiron (5:18)
  4. Voirongate (3:43)
Review: This tasty four-tracker is worth celebrating on a number of levels, not least the return to action of rising star Voiron. The Parisian producer has been frustratingly quiet since releasing a new edition of his popular 2016 EP "Voironzinor" on Craigie Knowes last March. Happily, "Air Voiron" is every bit as good as we'd hoped it would be. Check first the bustling bursts of breakbeats, droning analogue bass and lilting electronic melodies of "K Mvoiron", before turning your attention to the psychedelic acid lines, pitched-up vocal samples, restless drum builds and fizzing riffs of "League of Voiron". Elsewhere, "Air Voiron" sees our hero wrap IDM style melodies and bubbly electronics around a mid-tempo, house style beat, while "Voirongate" is a cheery, piano-laden jog through blissful, saucer-eyed early '90s electronica pastures.

He collaborates with Detroit electro legends Dopplereffekt on the absolutely majestic "Bloom", while the title track or the breaks-driven "Otaku" explore old-school beats with a modern twist. Finally on the flip, we have a remix of "Bloom" by American retroverts Mike Servito and Justin Cudmore - who inject more dancefloor dynamics into it with their Kv In Full Mix.

Review: Two of Detroit's most influential movers and shakers, it's about time Di'jital and Maaco enjoyed some of the limelight usually taken up the city's larger than life DJ characters. Here we find them brewing up the clippy, clicky classic electro groove "Aliens N Effect". Uptempo and nagging with a deadly scratchy riff, it's an instant bodypopper. Comes complete with an instrumental, a dub and a technicolour revisitation of Di'Jital's 2006 workout "Armada."

The man behind Cambridge electro night Motherchip Connexion and his own [d]-tached label invites you to strap in and surge through the skies with him on a pulsating journey that finds him tease real funk out of his machines. From sombre and stripped back cuts of lonely electro to masterfully melodic affairs via devastatingly emotional groovers, this EP does it all in fantastic fashion.

Review: The ever-impressive Organic Analogue returns with another crucial excursion into seductive hardware jams from the deeper end of the electronic gene pool. Marvis Dee is an alias for Dutch electro champ Jeremiah R, and finds the promising upstart on impeccable form. There's something seedy in the air on killer opening jam "Alpha", while "Dipper" makes no bones about its classic, Drexciya-informed electro intentions. "I Can See It In My Dreams" is a wistful trip into Chicago house territory, which Orgue Electronique dutifully remixes in his warm, effervescent manner. With "Intervention" and "Cygnus" taking a deeper direction it's a record with depth to match the other excellent releases on OA, and one of the strongest sleeve designs we've seen in some time.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Mostly found mining his archives on For Those That Knoe and dropping a quality album on Subwax, comeback champ Derek Carr makes the logical move over to Russ Gabriel's Ferox label with four trips through sublime machine soul. If you've listened to previous Derek Carr releases then you know what to expect - the beats flutter with thoughtful programming and the synths cartwheel through expressive patterns that speak to the same sci-fi fantasies that made B12 so iconic in the early 90s. There's also space for a little subtle electro, as on the haunting "Time Out," bringing a touch of versatility to the record without breaking that shimmering vintage techno haze.

  3. DJ Overdose - "I See No Stars At Night" (4:16)
  4. DJ Overdose - "Potje Freaken" (4:55)
Review: The Go Finger label has been digging into the undergrowth of synthwave sounds and deviant electro for a few years now, more recently graduating from the tape scene to put out EPs of leftfield electronic adventures on wax. This EP in particular is quite something, calling on the vintage talents of Das Ding in all their eerie, warped, pulsing, analogue refinement. "Conun Drum" is a curiously playful trip through noirish cityscapes by way of strobing lead lines and militaristic machine beats, while "Life Is A Tool In The Hands Of Strangers" takes a more uptempo approach without losing the bombast of their melodic arrangements. Dutch electro champ DJ Overdose steps up for the B side, dropping the overcast and creeping "I See No Stars At Night" and the dishevelled robot beatdown "Potje Freaken".

  4. Exterminador - "Alien Landscapes" (4:48)
Review: In some ways, And Silently Vanish Away is an odd title for an EP packed with tracks that linger long in the memory. Certainly, electro heads will appreciate the heavy 808 hits, droning bass and fluttering, deep space electronics of Exterminador's brilliant "Alien Soundscapes", not to mention the trippy, delay-laden vocal samples, warped hardware melodies and scuttling drum machine rhythms of NGLY and Exterminador's "Broken Flowers". We're big fans, too, of Hinode's bustling, razor-sharp opener "Mission4" - the kind of track that would leap out of a DJ mix and send you rushing online to find out its identity - and the fuzzy, dust-encrusted techno hum of DJ Nephil's hypnotic "Codex".

  1. Scorched Earth
  2. Ascension
  3. Landscapes
Review: Satamile turns 40, and does it in style with the stunning "Apocalyptica EP" from Sir Real. There are three top-notch tracks that combine the electro breakbeat of the early years with the sonic qualities of Kraftwerk, all soaked in nitro for one huge club-fuelled electro record. "Scorched Earth" is a full rev club cut with deep melodic arrangements, staccato bass accents and a driving breakbeat, along with very uplifting sound-design which characterizes this growler of a track. Not for the faint-hearted, but at the same time not dark. It's an emotive cut for the big room boom. "Ascension" picks up where the a-side left off. It is a subtle and funky acid breakbeat cut with nu-wave style chord progressions to lift the track skywards. "Landscapes" finishes off the EP, and the best may well have been saved for last. It has a snapping bass-snare break with great sound design, heavily treated ghostly vocal snippets, and mysterious and unique backing melodies providing rare and stunning new sonic landscapes. This one might be the 4am sci-fi voyeur track - deep and mysterious yet with lots of drive and energy for the dancefloor.

Review: Sex Tags Mania chief Sotofett has had an ongoing friendship with Sydneysider Carlos Zarate, since appearing on the latter's Thug imprint with their collaborative Planetary Involvement EP back in 2016. Much like their previous outing, Arjun is another brazen tribute to the classic sounds of Detroit techno. From the classic hi-tech soul aesthetic of the title track with its celestial pads backed by bombastic electro-bass beats, plus sleazy G-funk leads. Speaking of which, the intergalactic funk of "Afroz" likewise gets its bass-heavy boom on, with melancholic strings and a wonky synth bass that's reminiscent of the Motor City's first wave - in particular Derrick May's Rhythim Is Rhythim releases.

Review: Dark Entries has been at the forefront of the coldwave and synth revival that has slowly taken hold over the last decade. Next up they turn their attention to a reissue of an out of print EP from 1988 by Jordi Guber and Krishna Goineau as Velodrome. Villalobos has been known to drop cuts from it, which should give you a good idea of its musical style: freaky 80s electro built on steppy drums, with taut and twanging synths reverberating around the mix, as exemplified by the opener. "Glasfabrik" is a hyper-speed cut with a tongue in cheek vocal, while "Capataz" is the most well-known joint with its acid bass and crashing hits.

Review: The latest audio missive from the My Own Jupiter camp brings together debutant Nicholas Lutz (here using the previously unused Draculas Lutz alias) and former CABARET Recordings producer Omar Chibarro. They pair begins proceedings with arresting A-side "Instrumento", a bold, bass-heavy and angular electro jam packed with mind-altering acid lines and shimmering, deep space motifs. They change tack on the flipside, accompanying snappy, organ-laced NYC garage bumper "Tschuss" with the hybrid acid-jack/spacey house bluster of quality closer "Gerogliftko". While stylistically varied, the EP's three tracks are united by an attractive looseness that only emphasizes the thrillingly wayward nature of the duo's otherworldly electronics.

Automaton EP (reissue) (limited transparent green vinyl 12")
Cat: PBXC 4. Rel: 26 Mar 19
  1. Nemisis (5:31)
  2. Oscillator (bonus beats) (5:46)
  3. Techno It's On My Mind (5:48)
Review: With brand new interest in beats and rhythm once again coming into play, Puzzlebox label owner, Keith (K-1) Tucker, has now decided to revise and revisit the music from his catalog as "Puzzlebox Classics." "Atomaton EP" opens with "Nemesis", which brings on Tucker's signature Electro/Techno beats, a tough as nails funky bassline, and his trademark eerie strings. "Oscillator (bonus beats)" maintains that perfect beat, a dramatic bassline, and swinging percussion attitude to the fold before closer "Techno It's On My Mind" with its mind-bending arps and clicky pecussion shoot this off-world thumper into overdrive for your ears. If you like your snare hard and relentless, battling for attention against a triggered piece of electrofunk provided by a classic 'K-1' bassline, you're in for a treat.

Autonegotiation (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: KLNR 1. Rel: 27 Jun 19
  1. Slide Back (6:15)
  2. Go (5:34)
  3. Filestream (6:27)
  4. (Not) Again! (5:12)
Review: First up on Klakson's NR series is Privacy, a Berlin-based producer whose crunchy electro missives and mangled dancefloor fusions have previously graced the catalogues of Lobster Theremin, Klasse Wrecks and Cultivated Electronics. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout the EP, from the punchy electro beats, squelchy bass and foreboding synth-strings of opener "Slide Back", to the rolling mid-tempo dancefloor melancholy of closing cut "(Not) Again!", whose cascading chords and unsettling bassline help set a suitably clandestine mood. Elsewhere, "Filestream" is a fuzzy but melodious chunk of lo-fi late night electro, while "Go" is a high-octane ghetto-tech thriller capable of causing devastation on dancefloors that like it raw and speedy.
