Arjun (12")
Cat: MANIA 29. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Arjun (5:34)
  2. Afroz (4:48)
Review: Sex Tags Mania chief Sotofett has had an ongoing friendship with Sydneysider Carlos Zarate, since appearing on the latter's Thug imprint with their collaborative Planetary Involvement EP back in 2016. Much like their previous outing, Arjun is another brazen tribute to the classic sounds of Detroit techno. From the classic hi-tech soul aesthetic of the title track with its celestial pads backed by bombastic electro-bass beats, plus sleazy G-funk leads. Speaking of which, the intergalactic funk of "Afroz" likewise gets its bass-heavy boom on, with melancholic strings and a wonky synth bass that's reminiscent of the Motor City's first wave - in particular Derrick May's Rhythim Is Rhythim releases.

Cat: CRTL 006. Rel: 07 Jan 19
  1. Tracid (8:05)
  2. That Break (7:14)
  3. Acid Rhytms (7:06)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Uruguay's finest house and techno export Z@p continues his welcome return to active service in the freakier end of the scene with this spot on Cartulis Music. "Tracid" has a clue in its title, and it doesn't take long to detect the brazen 303 baiting taking place through the core of this peppy workout. It's an effective weapon used in just the right way that should get bodies wriggling with approval. "That Break" meanwhile diverts into a kind of braindance territory with the titular drums matched with more wobbly synth leads and spooked out pads, and then "Acid Rhytms" rounds the EP off with a more reflective cut for calmer moments in the dance.

  4. Yssue - "Doesn't Mean Alive" (5:30)
  5. Yaws - "Avantex" (5:16)
Review: KUMP's second multi-artist extravaganza - the Lyon-based label's first such exercise for two years -brings together tracks from a quintet of eccentric experimentalists. Clanking, horror-inspired creepiness is provided from the start via Jon The Baptist's lolloping "Hear No Evil", while those looking for some chugging, mid-tempo dancefloor sleaze should make a beeline for Maahrt's "Davardage". Elsewhere, Stove's "Chief of Nine Sisters" is an industrialist's take on tropical music with a suitably pagan twist, and Yssue and Yaws' contributions both sound like contemporary re-inventions of Nitzer Ebb style electronic body music (albeit with a touch more inherent looseness).

  6. Yo Bitch Needs Them Hits (2:56)
Review: The Poverty Is Violence stable are firmly established now as an essential conductor for rabid, rowdy and downright rasping mechanics from subterranean operators of all shapes and sizes. Anonymous but reportedly veteran Dutch producer XXX previously appeared on the label in 2016 with the wild Noorder Scannen 12", and now returns with a bludgeoning new release. There's a consistent metal grind to the percussion on Westzaan Doelen, while the synth tones in between tend towards the jagged and abrasive, there's space and poise in the arrangement to lift this out of knuckleheaded noise. "Don't Go After Her" reverberates with clamouring intensity while the beefy chassis of "Just The Two Of You" shimmers under an acidic glaze - this is full-tilt deviant music executed with finesse to match the grime.

Review: There's a certain mysticism that hovers around Piramide Registrazioni, with its occult symbolism, mysterious artists and fuzzy, vintage sound. Label protagonist Xinner has been previously spotted alongside S. Moreira on Phonica Records, but here is sharing valuable wax space on Piramide 2 with Autre and Hawaiian Chips. Autre's version of old-skool deep house has an interesting urgency about it, and Hawaiian Chips turns out shimmering electro of the highest order. It's Xinner's tracks that stand out the most though, with synths straining under the weight of their own wobblyness and beats that punch out in clouds of reverb fog.

  4. Weakmassive - "Sjhue" (4:59)
Review: Owen Jay's Batti Batti label has carried a great selection of various artists releases throughout its back catalogue, and the tradition continues with this latest missive. The Palette EP kicks off with the ever-rising talents of Jayson Wynters, who plies a seductive strain of deep house on "Sherella's Kiss" that melts perfectly into the blissful, twinkling keys and gossamer percussion of Duccio's "Absurdation". Kiddmisha leads in on the B side with the sprightly electro of "Healing" before Weakmassive rounds things off with the mellow acid of "Sjhue," which matches a nagging 303 with sumptuous keys for a spine-tingling conclusion to a fantastic 12".

Review: Fresh from delivering two killer cuts on a split release with pal Jack Michael on Orbital London, former Osman artist Harry Wills pops up on LEMAK. There's plenty to admire throughout, from the subtle deep garage influences, bleeping melodies and rolling tech-house grooves of opener "Quench", to the shuffling deep electro pulse of ghostly closing cut "Grebe". By far away the most arresting cut on the EP, "Capri Swung", is sandwiched between the two. This sees him continue to develop his trademark garage-influenced tech-house sound by wrapping glitchy electronics and jammed-out organ chords around a bonkers, Luke Vibert style bassline and swinging two-step drums.

Review: Typically, General Elektro isn't giving much away about the identity of the producers behind "new collaboration" Westend, or their aims for the project for that matter. Musically, it's a quietly impressive debut that features a sextet of tracks mostly built around gently undulating synthesizer arpeggio lines and moody electronics. Many of the tracks are stripped-back, hypnotic and beat-less, deriving their power from the relentless thrust of the arpeggio lines that ripple across the sound space. Others, meanwhile, include ghostly electro drums or, in the case of the bombastic "Track 4", the kind of no-nonsense, kick-drum-driven beats that were once a feature of the greatest Electronic Body Music releases.

  1. Blue Bullet (8:34)
  2. Making Friends With The Invader (9:21)
Review: Given his recent obsession with shoegaze-influenced psychedelic disco chug, it's easy to forget that Andrew Weatherall is capable of crafting seriously good electro. Of course, his take on electro is far from purist. "Blue Bullet", the title track from the veteran DJ/producer's second Byrd Out 12", features spacey, ricocheting machine drums and deep space electronics, but is powered by a typically fuzzy, restless dub disco bassline. Weatherall's love of dub soundystem culture comes to the fore on flipside "Making Friends With The Invader", where discordant, psychedelic influenced guitars rise above delay-laden drum machine hits and a suitably heavyweight bassline.

Review: Throughout his career, L.I.E.S. regular Beau Wanzer has proved adept at delivering decidedly fuzzy, lo-fi workouts that variously draw influence from industrial, EBM, techno and electro. He's at it again on "Do The Spider Shimmy", a tidy ten-inch containing six wonderfully wayward cuts. It's a noticeably stripped-back affair, with most of the cuts existing of little more than sparse but heavy basslines, occasional electronics, minimalist electro beats and the odd droning, stylized vocal. Highlights come thick and fast, from the gently spacey synth-scape "Never Look Back" and the buzzing simplicity of "You Can't Stand On Broken Shoes", to the lo-fi no wave pop of "Choice Curve" and the raw, laid back electro sleaze of the title track.

Review: Following up a terrific 2018 that closed out with a killer output by Robert Dietz, Jensen Interceptor and Hugo Massien, U.K. label E-Beamz are back with more throwback sounds, this time courtesy of the enigmatic Vort who makes an impressive debut on the label here. From the brooding underwater electro-funk of killer opener "50 Yen", the rolling junglist stepper "Rainfall" to the depth charged yet emotive soul of "Tulip", Vort is keeping a low profile at present but we are pretty sure you'll be hearing more from this promising producer in this year.

Review: Although better known for being one of the few European producers to fully embrace the early ethos of Detroit techno, Orlando Voorn's first love was actually electro. He's been returning to those roots a little in recent years, and here delivers another fine EP of bustling, beatbox-driven cuts as the Stalker (an alias he last used 21 years ago). There's much to enjoy throughout, from the chiming synthesizer melodies, wiggly acid bass and body-popping beats of "Electrocute" and warped electrofunk shuffle of "Tech The Soul", to the razor-sharp, high register acid lines, deep space chords and booming bass of "Solar System". We're not sure whether these tracks are brand new or rediscovered archive gems; either way, the EP is a thrilling blast from the past.

  4. A48 Direction Voiron (6:18)
Review: Parisian producer and DJ Voiron got his break back in 2014 with the Radome EP on Concrete Music and he's popped up on the excellent One Eyed Jacks operated by Photonz as well as Lyon's Rave or Die since then. Across his releases so far, Voiron's shown a willingness to dabble in the crawlspace between acid, electro and techno no it's no surprise to find him land on local concern Nocta Numerica Records! The Paris label may be young but they've impressed with releases from Dynarec and Cold Colours and this bright yellow Voironizer 12" is killer. The title track's usage of synths and drum samples displays a sense of humour redolent of Ceephax Acid Crew, whilst "Building Voiron" and "After Chez Oim" are delightful attempts at classic synthwave.

  4. Voirongate (3:43)
Review: This tasty four-tracker is worth celebrating on a number of levels, not least the return to action of rising star Voiron. The Parisian producer has been frustratingly quiet since releasing a new edition of his popular 2016 EP "Voironzinor" on Craigie Knowes last March. Happily, "Air Voiron" is every bit as good as we'd hoped it would be. Check first the bustling bursts of breakbeats, droning analogue bass and lilting electronic melodies of "K Mvoiron", before turning your attention to the psychedelic acid lines, pitched-up vocal samples, restless drum builds and fizzing riffs of "League of Voiron". Elsewhere, "Air Voiron" sees our hero wrap IDM style melodies and bubbly electronics around a mid-tempo, house style beat, while "Voirongate" is a cheery, piano-laden jog through blissful, saucer-eyed early '90s electronica pastures.

  4. Charlie On The Moon
Review: After the label debuted recently with a 12" from Enrico Mantini, Purism returns with another fresh talent in the shape of Pepe Villalba, who makes a mighty fine impression with this first outing. "Acidbreak" may be something of a misleading name, although the 303 and a broken beat do feature heavily. It's actually woozy lead lines that shape out the vibe of this track, making for a dreamy electro diversion, and the mysterious yet warmly melodic tone continues on "U.F.O. (Sad Story About Conquering A Planet)". "Pianelice" is a different kind of jam with its stark keys way out front, but it's no less classy and ear-catching. "Charlie On The Moon" then finishes the record off with some slow, leftfield sparkle pitched at the lounging crew.

Review: The Electronic Leatherette label shows its hand straight away with a pointed nod to The Normal and the foundations of Mute Records. Sure enough there's an industrial, new wave and electro fog hanging over the nocturnal transmissions that make up this first release, although it's far from one dimensional throwback music. Vessel In Distress has a chilly sci-fi leaning to its brand of gloomy electro, but that's contrasted by the sprightly robo-funk of Franck Kartell's "Sigma Octantis". MSRG brings the party with the feisty stomp and gnarly synth lines of "Elliptical Wave", and Heinrich Dressel rolls out an evocative night crawler of a track in "Down Upsight", as is his customary style.

Review: Five years on from the release of his brilliant debut 'Watched By The Experts" album on Apartment Records, VernoN finally returns to action. While that acclaimed set explored a sleazy mix of techno, EBM and new beat, this belated follow-up features a quartet of tracks wrapped in the distinctively wild and undulating sounds of Roland's legendary TB-303 bass synthesizer. There are a couple of suitably forthright, acid house style "jack tracks" - see the superb "Assault" and the snappy alien funk of "Riot" - alongside a bustling, breakbeat-driven acid shuffler ["Don't Be a Slave (Consumerism Mix)]", with its bounding waves of wild electronics and whispered vocal samples) and a surging acid-electro workout that's so psychedelic it could probably induce hallucinations in even the most sober of listeners (standout "Scuffle").

The same could be said for Giallo Disco, and certainly the two labels orbit a similar space for lurid soundtrack-inspired hardware jams from the Italo age. Vercetti Technicolor is one half of the Giallo team alongside Antoni Maiovvi, and here steps out with a perfectly bombastic range of compositions that revel in B-movie brilliance. "Golden Taurus" is the perfect slow-burner, those mono bass notes warming like no soft synth ever could, while "Topaz Fear" brings a more action-driven sequence into the mix. "Death Wish" too opts for a pumped up club scenario, while Heinrich Dressel smokes out "Golden Taurus" into a seedy slow-jam.

Review: Dark Entries has been at the forefront of the coldwave and synth revival that has slowly taken hold over the last decade. Next up they turn their attention to a reissue of an out of print EP from 1988 by Jordi Guber and Krishna Goineau as Velodrome. Villalobos has been known to drop cuts from it, which should give you a good idea of its musical style: freaky 80s electro built on steppy drums, with taut and twanging synths reverberating around the mix, as exemplified by the opener. "Glasfabrik" is a hyper-speed cut with a tongue in cheek vocal, while "Capataz" is the most well-known joint with its acid bass and crashing hits.
