Exit Planet Earth: Nitrogen
Exit Planet Earth: Nitrogen (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EPE 03. Rel: 23 Nov 20
  1. Radioactive Man - "One Out" (6:09)
  2. Annie Hall - "Invisible Dust" (5:10)
  3. Sansibar - "Tamagotchi" (7:28)
  4. VC-118A - "Moss" (5:55)
Review: 20/20 Vision continue to celebrate their renewed electro vigour with the third part in the Exit Planet Earth series, once again calling on a crack team of machine funkers to deliver the robo-goods. Radioactive Man is up first with 'One Out', which finds the original Lone Swordsman on impeccable form teasing and testing his rubbery synth flex around a needlepoint groove. Annie Hall follows up in fine style with the dreamy lilt of 'Invisible Dust', while Sansibar locks into something a little dirtier on the dungeon boogie of 'Tamagotchi'. VC-118A's 'Moss' completes the set in a spellbinding fashion, dropping the tempo for something a little more exploratory with plenty of mystical atmospheres and tweaked FX fills marking out an evocative soundscape.

  5. Intelligent Design (7:04)
Review: Massive synth action here from the man like Kid Machine as he follows up this year's earlier release Traditions 15 with the highly limited five-tracker 'Lone Wolf'. Hitting hard with the uplift, 'Atomik War' hits with such thrust you can hear the likes of Yazoo in the vibrant riff. Elsewhere 'Lone Wolf' takes us back to early German trance before 'Stolen Dream' and 'UMANO' dig deep into melodic synthwave with strong layers and harmonies. Finally we 'Intelligent Design' closes on a deliciously widescreen and slo-mo note. Only 300 pressed; you'll be howling if you miss this.

  3. Glacier (5:55)
  4. Shayla (5:37)
Review: Following up an impressive inaugural release which featured legend Silicon Scally, Joonam - the duo comprised of minimal techno veteran Elon and Nima Khalilian - returns to Brooklyn-based Balagan with the Astra EP featuring some more bass heavy electro beats. There's the darkly dystopian funk of the title track on the A-side, which is followed by an absolutely frantic rework by Allergy Season head Physical Therapy. On the flip, the bleak futurism continues with the suitably titled 'Glacier' which goes down a sublime and cavernous dub techno path, while the sparse and booming breakbeats of 'Shayla' create a captivating backdrop for a truly evocative arrangement. Tip!

  5. The Promised Dimension (5:46)
Review: The first release in 2017 released on Seoul's Braindance Records by the producer Go Dam receives a much deserved repress here. Understated electro with distinctly classic Motor City aesthetics are abound on the Promised Dimension EP. From the Model 500 influence on 'Three Elements', to the acid washed hi-tech soul of 'Caveman's Journey' on the A-side, while the emotive and electrified adventures in funk continue on the flip with 'Last Chance' and the sublime title track - a majestic downbeat experience. As per the press release "We now enter a new era seeking for the gifted place... alienized soundwaves spread through the grooves as an attempt to reach the promised land."

  1. Loft Lunar (8:19)
  2. Tenebrosys (7:34)
  3. Slippery Master (7:30)
  4. Nautravellius (7:27)
Review: New London based imprint Breakfast Musik inaugurate their label with a release by Uruguayan talent Cosmonaut: not to be confused with the Ukrainian superstar DJ of the same name. Real name Fede Jorcin from Montevideo, these retro flavoured jams will appeal to fans of the current sound of Berlin, emanating from the headquarters of Cabaret, Libertine or My Own Jupiter. Starting off with the deep bleep techno of "Loft Lunar" sounding like classic Stasis, the four to the floor electro of "Tenebrosys" up next really gets the party started. On the flip, there's a mellower strain of electro on "Slippery Master" (that's more reminiscent of Gosub) while the closing track "Nautravellius" goes out with a right blast: featuring that syncopated bang and clatter of vintage drum computers assisted by the funk of classic acid sounds.

Champion Sound
Cat: B 012. Rel: 13 Nov 20
  1. Champion Sound (5:44)
  2. Invaders (7:13)
Review: Following flirtations with the Trilogy Tapes and L.I.E.S, techno noise-maker Robert Bergman returns to Brew with two more intensely lo-fi club jams. He opens with 'Champion Sound', a throbbing and pulsating affair in which squelching acid motifs, fizzing electronic riffs and weird noise fight for attention atop a jacking and weighty techno beat. It's hard to describe and, as is his usual style, a touch messy in parts, but that's always been part of the charm of Bergman's decidedly dystopian music. Over on side B, 'Invaders' is a more sci-fi sounding affair, with the producer's usual mind-mangling noises and angular motifs coming accompanied by hybrid techno/electro beats, rising and falling TB-303 lines and deeply spacey pads.

Review: The mysterious C-Lektro continues to run anonymously amok with their crisp, authentic electro designs. As always in this white label series there's no info or track titles, just ice cold breakbeats, stark, emotional musicality and vibes across the spectrum; those in need of a deep space trip and layers of elements to get lost in head for the opening 'Track 1', those looking for more of a body high jump on the thick switchy beats of 'Track 4', those in need of turning inside out and hurling around the room go direct to the head-turning rudeness of 'Track 6'. Raw.

  3. Live In Transnistria (4:46)
  4. TritonProOneS900 (7:11)
  5. My Dad Was A Lifeguard (7:16)
Review: There's no stopping Danny Wolfers, who has still managed to release two albums as Legowelt this year despite a raging pandemic and a crippling economic downturn. He's predictably on form again on his first outing for Lapsus offshoot C.E.E, giddily moving between a range of sparkling, synth-heavy outings that encapsulate all that is good about his analogue-rich productions. We're really enjoying opener 'Santiago Chile Arp Track', where sparkling electronic melodies and mind-warping TB-303 lines rise and fall above a jacking techno drum track, while title track 'System Shapeshift' is amongst the most psychedelic, punchy and potent electro tracks he's ever released. Also worth a look is the early Orbital-ish trip that is 'Live in Transnistria', not to mention the stuttering heaviness of strobe-lit acid onslaught 'My Dad Was a Lifeguard'.

  2. Romance In The Old Country (4:47)
  3. Rising Sun (4:31)
  4. Adventures In The World Of Becoming (4:41)
Review: Jonny Dillon AKA Automatic Tasty lands on Central Processing Unit for the first time with an EP that is far from typical of the Sheffield label's output. While there are nods to the label's usual sci-fi electro sound, the majority of the tracks draw more influence from electrofunk and, more obviously, the deeper end of the 1980s synth-pop spectrum. For proof, check opener 'The Future is Not What It Used To Be', whose robotic vocoder vocals, chiming melodies and Chris Lowe style chord progressions gives the track an 'overlooked 1988 Pet Shop Boys B-side' kind of feel. Elsewhere, 'Romance in the Old Country' is atmospheric, warming and bittersweet, 'Rising Sun' is giddy and cheerful, and 'Adventures in the World of Becoming' sounds like a long-lost, late '90s Plone track.

Review: Sheffield's Central Processing Unit has become a key home for Silcion Scally, the most prolific of all the aliases of Carl Finlow. This is his third outing on the label and another high class affair that ploughs fresh electro ground. Opener 'V Electro' has a dark bassline and super crisp drums. There is a much more unhinged mood to 'Bode,' a jam with ADHD and multiple personalities. 'Proximity Sensor' is the sound of the computers taking over, with squelchy bass and jittery grooves, while 'Dormant' closes with a dystopian atmosphere and layer upon layer of intergalactic energy all vying for attention.

  2. Kev Cotter - "The Bronx Executioner" (4:33)
  3. Allward - "Slowburst" (5:15)
Review: Chromatophore makes a head turning debut in the world of vinyl with a various artists EP that reaches all points of the electro spectrum. Plant43 will be no stranger to those in the know and opens up in urgent fashion with the synth waves and driving grooves of 'European Tides'. Kev Cotter gets a little more introspective and deep in his complex 'The Bronx Executioner' with a mood bassline underpinning the whole thing. The most experimental of the lot is Allward's closing gem 'Slowburst,' a mix of shimming synths and disappearing pads that leave you floating adrift in the skies.

Review: Here's a nifty little cocktail you might want to try in your kitchen: The Leipzig reset, a heady German brew designed to clear your memory and take you, your tastebuds and everyone you love to planets unknown. Take a potent dose of traditional electro, add 2020 venom and paranoia then slow bake in a specialist oven handcrafted by the top engineers of Detroit and Berlin for over 20 years. The results speak for themselves; the up-tempo electro spice and acid twangs of 'Definition', the curmudgeonly warping breakbeats of 'Kind & Suspicious', the overt suspicion and Cold War funk of 'Alle Goede Dinge', the list goes on. Bottoms up.

  6. Out With Tha Old (4:12)
Review: Second time around for D.I.E's The Man You'll Never See Part 2, a near legendary set of bustling, funk-fuelled electro cuts that first surfaced on Clone back in 2003. This new edition includes five of the EP's six original tracks, replacing "Space Travel" with the similarly sought-after "Programming" - a Drexciya-esque workout rich in fizzing drum machine beats, rumbling sub-bass and deep space acid lines - which originally appeared on 2002's Keep Hanging EP. It remains a superb set of tracks, all told, with the Motor City duo flitting between deep and melodious cuts ("Other People"), vocal-laced Cybotron tributes ("Keep Hanging"), decidedly intergalactic fare ("Out With Tha Old") and quirky, glassy-eyed gems ("U Can't See Us").

Review: As any electro-head will well know, AUX88 is one of the original Detroit pioneers. Back in 2008 he dropped this EP and now leading Dutch electro titans Creme Organization's Classics offshoot remasters it and reissues it complete with a bonus joint from DJ K1. 'Electro Muzik' is fierce from the off, with vocoded vocals and squelchy bass ripping up raw analogue drums. 'Interstellar Funk' is pure and perfect body music, with super-funk in the drum and bass combo and smeared sci-fi chords bringing all the feels. 'Alia Life Form' is another dark interplanetary trip then that DJ K1 tune 'Just Don't understand' locks you in a hall of reflective melodies and restless bass.

  3. Recollect (6:32)
Review:
Four years on from putting this EP out digitally, John Selway starts his own new label with a first ever vinyl pressing of it. He is an artist with a history that dates back to the nineties and takes in some high class minimal and electro funk on a range of labels, as well as plenty of production credits with Deep Dish, and this EP is one of his best. 'Shimmerdown' is super cosmic deep house with a synth based soul straight out of Detroit, while 'Solas' shows off a more high speed techno sound that is riddled with trippy motifs that keep your mind working. 'Recollect' is more stripped back, darker and pensive and completes an EP rich in stylistic variation.

  4. Infected System (5:46)
Review: From Madrid with love: Man of many aliases Fabio Vinuesa (DJ Doma, Sacred Things, Vacuum Exploration) introduces us to brand new Spanish label Distritio 91 with the crisp analogue soul of 'Altered Sequences'. Traditional electro from the off, the title track sets to the tone and pace. Stripped right back to bare pads and twinkling 303s, it's followed by the darker, dubbier drones of 'Dance Pattern' before we flip some slightly harder dancefloor tackle; 'Multilevel' is a switchy, glitchy acid swamp wriggler while 'Infected System' shuts the EP down with glacial waves of acid paranoia. Ice cold.

  4. Tom Cat (Spacetravel remix) (8:07)
Review: To deliver their third release since debuting in 2018, from the less-than-prolific DXL Records has recruited Pressure Point, a producer who received plenty of praise for his earlier singles on Sol Asylum, Telharmonic Texture and All On Tape. The Wrong System EP is a quietly impressive return to form, with the little-known producer smoothly moving between intergalactic tech-house funk (the leaping, sci-fi sounds, shuffling drums and bubbly melodies of 'Timepiece'), mind-altering tech-house box jams (see 'Wrong Systems', with its chiming lead lines and hypnotic vibe), and tech-tinged deep house goodness ('Tom Cat'). The accompanying 'Spacetravel Mix' of 'Tom Cat' is also rather good, in part because it features what sounds like a broken modem having a meltdown over bustling machine drums, foreboding bass and soft-touch chords.

Review: In case you didn't know, Machine Funk is a twelve part project from Cygnus and Alek Stark, who are behind Fundamental Records, 808 Box, Electric Eclectics and now Electro Records. This second part offers more classic electro rooted in cyber-punk aesthetics and a utopian cosmic future. The analogue machinery shines through, the popping hits and sleek basslines all working their way into your psyche. The first two cuts are deep voyaging affairs with mind expanding synths, while the flip gets more aggressive on 'Hypnotized' and somewhere in-between on the twisted 'Xeli Code Breakers.'

Review: Earlier in the year, Madrid's Electro Records launched the Electro Transmissions series via Abduction Krew, a five-track, multi-artist EP full of cybernetic dancefloor treats. Here they present the follow-up, a rock-solid mini compilation on eye-catching red splatter vinyl entitled Sterilization Krew. There's plenty to excite electro heads throughout, from the sparkling deep electro shimmer of Kan3da's 'Condoso' and the intergalactic, bassline-driven alien funk of Datawave's superb 'Emeria', to the mind-bending, TB-303 driven acid-electro of Acidulant's 'Rainology' and the Aux 88-style high-octane heaviness of Noamm's 'Telesthesia'. It's a rather good collection all told, and with limited numbers of copies being pressed, you'll need to act fast to secure one.

Review: The third instalment in the Allstars series from Frigio is another selection of murky sonics from a freaky underworld. The opener is a dark trip into intense and underlapping drum grooves and molten synths that crashes from one loop to the next. The rickety drums of 'Bruxism' come with a classic Moby sample that sets it on fire and Negocius Man take us into a world of surveillance and subversion with their tripped out designs and malfunctioning machine sounds. Sons Of Traders offer the most depraved of the lot with a track that is suitably terrifying as the haunting season approaches.

Dedictated To Uwe
  1. Herzogen (5:06)
  2. Vondekloties (5:06)
Review: Cedric Dewkowski and Felix Reifenberg have long been associated with Frankfurt collective Hardworksoftdrink, with the pair's 2017 collaborative full-length L'Album still the only LP that the label has released to date. Typically, the artistic imprint has not offered up much information about Dedicated to Uwe, their latest joint 12". Regardless, it's well worth a listen thanks to the pair's love of far-sighted synth sounds and firm grasp of mood and melody. A-side 'Herzogen' is particularly enjoyable, with the duo peppering a gentle electro rhythm with sun-bright keyboard stabs, squelchy acid bass, starry chords and cheerful melodies. There's a similar blend of sounds at play on flipside 'Vondekloties', which reminded us a little of the colourful, retro-futurist IDM of Birmingham-based synthesizer fetishists Plone.

HEARLUCINATE 002 (Bum Jump/Tushy mix)
Cat: HEARLUCINATE 002. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. Ron Obvious - "Tugging" (Bum Jump mix)
  2. Ron Obvious - "Elixic 3"
  3. Tristan Da Cunha - "Bass Penetration" (Tushy dub)
  4. Freakenstein - "Thafonk"
Review: The second drop on Hearlucinate comes correct with some more of that nasty party-starting tackle you want to make sure you're packing in your utility belt. The 'Bum Jump' mix of Ron Obvious' 'Tugging' kicks off the A side with a cheeky swing, bendy acid line and nimble organ licks to give you a loose and lively 90s flavour, which carries on through to the break-speckled acid funker 'Elixic 3'. On the B side, Tristan Da Cunha gets locked into a tunnelling tech house shuffle with plenty of ruff n' tuff attitude on the 'Tushy Dub' of 'Bass Penetration'. Then Da Cunha dons his Freakenstein alias to slap down the body-poppin', bleep-tastic electro funk of 'Thafonk' for all the B-girls and B-boys.

Cybernetic Movements EP
Cybernetic Movements EP (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: INTLC 005. Rel: 30 Oct 20
  1. Surge (6:00)
  2. Seismic Shift (5:10)
  3. U Said I Couldn't Do It (5:00)
  4. Cybernetic Movement (4:53)
Review: Fresh from an appearance on Shall Not Fade, Luz1e flexes her muscles via a suitably fuzzy, hard-edged EP of intense club electro on International Chrome. It's a suitably tough affair all told, with throbbing, raw, all-action opener 'Surge' being joined on side A by the potentially rave-igniting acid-electro heat of 'Seismic Shift', where warehouse-ready synth stabs jostle for position with stabbing analogue bass and razor-sharp TB-303 motifs. The Frankfurt-based artist doesn't let up on the flip either, where the punishing, ghetto-tech inspired intensity of 'U Said I Couldn't Do It' comes paired with the Drexciya-influenced dread of inspired title track 'Cybernetic Movements'. The latter is spiky and club-ready, but also extremely paranoia-inducing.
