  1. Ancient Pulse (3:55)
  2. Pulsating Dub (3:55)
  3. Heart Beat Dub (3:55)
  4. Divine Timing (3:42)
Review: The always on point iNdicia Dubs invite you to get down to their latest riddim at the hands of Kibir La Amlak. Entitled '"Ancient Pulse" this new vinyl only missive has an enacting lead line that flutters away over this label's trademark drums: they are neon, steel plated, contemporary and do a good job of making you move. A tripper dub takes care of the A1 while on the flip there are even more whacked out versions with endless echo and reverb and natty keys, while "Divine Timing" is driven by a drilling bassline that burrows superbly deep.

  4. 4D Dub (3:40)
Review: London sound system crew, live show and record label Kibir La Amlak, founded in 2009 by Jamie JT Thomas, has been busy of late, and the fruits of their labour are now shining through with a third EP on Indica Dubs in June alone. "Eye | Eye" is the most dreamy and detached dub of the recent run of offerings. It has almost nostalgic leads up top, shining bright on a summer's day while smooth bass shapes and wavy drum lines all sinking you into something of a reverie. Various iterations come from the other three dubs, meaning there is something for every mood and setting.

  3. Lioness Step (3:49)
  4. Lioness Stride (3:50)
Review: Kibir La Amlak is coming on strong in June with not one but two new offerings on regular home Indicia Dubs. "Lion Step" is another fresh and forward looking four track 10" with a thoroughly futurist twist on the tried and tested dub template. The shimmering leads glisten like buildings in some high rise metropolis, while the snaking leads and stoner effects all add to the escapism. The titular track leads proceedings in slick fashion, while "Lioness Step" slows down to a more meditative pace, with swagger bass for company.

  1. State Of Mind (feat Baba Ras) (5:21)
  2. Extent (4:38)
Review: Earlier in the year, Babe Roots broke free of their hypnotic dub techno roots and delivered an ambient dub-influenced re-make of Earl Gateshead's "I Come From Gateshead". Here the Turn-based crew continues to blur the boundaries between dub techno, ambient dub and digi-dub via a first appearance on nascent Japanese label Newdubhall. Baba Ras lends a hand on fabulous A-side "State of Mind", delivering hybrid spoken and sung vocals atop a deliciously spaced-out dub rhythm that owes much to the work of Basic Channel. Even deeper and more alluring is flipside "Extent", an exemplary ambient dub excursion rich in bluesy trumpet solos, pulsing sub-bass and drifting, ultra-spacey chords.

  5. Blind Prophet & Titus 12 - "Delay The Storm" (3:15)
Review: The latest Dub Stuy release from label stalwart Blind Prophet is something of an all-star affair, with the Portland-based producer enlisting help from a variety of dub-heads stationed around the globe. He starts by joining forces with Russian toaster Tenor Youthman and Bristol crew Tailored Sound on the languid digi-dub bounce of "Dollar Trap", before going solo on the deep dubstep influenced weight of "Clash". GREAZUS and Redders lend a hand on the inventive dub/experimental D&B growl of "Just Another Soundboy". Elsewhere, "Conquer Yuhself" with Rider Shafique is an ultra-deep, Basic Channel style dub techno shuffler, and Titus 12 hook-up "Delay The Storm" is a heady chunk of sun-kissed dub-tronica.

  2. Signs Of The Times (dub mix 1) (3:40)
  3. Signs Of The Times (dub mix 2) (3:38)
Review: Eastern Roots have built up a small but well formed discography since debuting 2012. It was in 2018 that this particular wax first landed and is now made available again during these red hot days of summer 2020. "Signs Of The Times" is a playful and mysterious jam which is in no hurry to go anywhere, instead looping the same flute lines up top and natty chords over hot-stepping drums. A meandering lead does eventually join the party and only serves to heighten to the trip. On the flip, two different versions strip things back in brain frying and dubbed out ways.

Review: Marco Marastoni and Michele Iemmi are the Dub Hunters and now they're back with another big catch that finds them play all their own instruments apart from the horns by Vale and kete drum by Crucial Rob. "Christopher Columbus" is a shiny dig dub with dub swells washing to and fro beneath big horn leads that are filled with playfulness. On the flip you'll find the more meditative "Melodica Versions" performed by Michele Iemmi, and both sides are primed for some big summer action.

  1. Five Rivers Band meets Disciples - "Tribute" (feat Chazbo) (3:23)
  2. Five Rivers Band & Disciples Riddim Section - "Tribute" (version) (3:25)
Review: Second time around for the Five Rivers Band's mid-2000s collaboration with UK dub stalwart - and Jah Shaka affiliate - The Disciples. The "45" first hit stores back in 2014, though it was recorded a few years earlier during the sadly too-short life of producer Devin Booj, who passed away in 2010 aged just 36. Check first A-side "Tribute", where attractive melodica motifs (provided by guest musician Chazbo) and spacey synthesizer chords weave in and out of a breezy digital reggae groove. Over on side B the Disciples provides a delightfully dubbed-out "Version" that adds greater low-end weight to the already chunky riddim.

Cat: STAUB 155. Rel: 22 Apr 20
  1. Launderette (3:48)
  2. Private Armies (6:20)
Review: Second time around for Vivien Goldman's inspired debut single, "Launderette", a fine chunk of no-wave era NYC heaviness that first slipped out way back in 1981. The title track is typical of New York's open-minded post-punk scene, with Goldman adding her distinctive vocals to a bass-heavy backing track big on dub bass, Melodica style flourishes and Latin-tinged percussion. Flipside "Private Armies" is a little more experimental in tone, with dubbed-out guitars and layered vocals riding an unflinchingly heavy, punk-funk style bassline and clicking, high-octane rhythm track. It's arty but impressive and arguably even more potent than the more familiar A-side.

  4. Chris Jay - "Can't Stop The Dub" (4:16)
Review: Dubwise Productions main man Chris Jay has been plugging away at the fringes of UK dub and reggae since the mid 1990s, swapping an early fascination with jungle for a desire to great digital reggae and dub tunes. He's at the controls throughout this rock solid EP, first providing the cheery, synth and guitar heavy riddim behind Martin Melody's soulful "We Are Jah People", before reaching for the tape delay and reverb on the heavier and stripped back "Dub People" version. He repeats the process on the flip, offering up a jaunty, 90s style digi-reggae riddim for Mike Turner (the rather tasty "Can't Stop The Vibes") which is then re-imagined as a delay-laden, sub-heavy bumper ("Can't Stop The Dub").

  1. Judgement Gate (3:49)
  2. Dub Gate (3:49)
Review: This one first arrived in 2013 and was pressed just 200 times. Nobuhiro Suzuki is the man behind it, a reggae and dub producer, musician and engineer from Tokyo also known as Shanty-Nob. The original, "Judgement Gate", is a busy and upbeat cut with clattering hits and big horns that endlessly ring out into the sky. The bass is big, the melodics is timeless and the whole thing defies its Far Eastern roots with some real contemporary dub authenticity. The "Dub Gate" flex on the flip is darker and more edgy for those late night sessions.

  3. Road Dub (part 2) (3:25)
Review: J Robinson's productions on his own WhoDemSound label are always worth checking, and his latest missive - a hook-up with storied singer El Indio - is no exception. Indio is in fine form on "Roadblock", adding seriously soulful vocals to a Robinson digi-dub riddum (think crispy machine drums, booming bass and jaunty keyboard stabs). As usual, Robinson provides two top-notch flipside versions, "Road Dub" parts one and two. The first of the pair is deliciously rhythm-focused, with various tape delay-laden vocal snippets and piano stabs flitting in and out of the sound space. If anything, the second part is even more spaced out, with lengthy delay trails flitting back and forth across the stereo field. It's our pick of the bunch, though all three tracks are strong.

Review: This expansive EP gathers together some archival tracks - some previously unreleased - from a trio of UK dub and reggae stalwarts. The A-side is all about Tena Stelin's 1992 collaboration with dub mixer Centry, "Clean Up The World" - a soulful digital reggae workout that was first featured on the pair's 1992 album "Sun & Moon". Here the original comes accompanied by two previously unheard Centry reworks, including the wonderfully heavy and delay laden "Dubplate Mix". Over on side B we're treated to three versions of Chazbo's attractive dub number "Lightning & Thunder". While the solo-laden original is cool, it's the two supremely deep and weighty dub mixes that really float our boat.

  1. Tenastelin & Kai Dub - "Stay Tuff" (3:57)
  2. Kai Dub - "Tuff Dub" (3:56)
Review: For the latest release on his Dub Future label, in-house producer Kai Dub has joined forces with veteran artist Tenastelin, a British vocalist whose career stretches right back to the mid 1980s. He's naturally in fine form on lead cut "Stay Tuff", adding soulful toasting and patois vocals to a warm, baggy, synths-and-drum machine heavy reggae riddim from the effervescent Kai Dub. The latter flexes his dub mixing muscles on flipside "Tuff Dub", a relatively radical dub-wise revision that wraps delay-laden vocal and instrumental snippets around a beefed up, steppers style dancefloor groove. The synths are particularly special, as are the rumbling bassline and Kai Dub's judicious use of effects.

Review: For their latest release, Jah Fingers has dipped into the digital catalogue of long-running Abi Shanti and Iration Steppas favourite TNT Roots. Both tracks showcased here were first featured on the British producer's "Raw Dubplate Warrior Style" CD-R way back in 2010. A-side "Elohim" is a particularly cosmic and spiritual take on digi-dub, with spacey electronic motifs and exotic synth sounds echoing away atop a slow and low bassline and head-nodding drums. Over on the flip, "Verse II" is a heavier and more dubbed-out affair where delay-laden keyboard riffs and similarly sci-fi sounds echo across another killer bassline and hypnotic beat.

Review: While Nat Birchall is naturally best known for his jazz work, he's no stranger to the world of dub and reggae. In fact, "Tradition Disc In Dub" is his second full-length collaboration with roots reggae musician, producer and mixer Al Breadwinner (the first, "Sounds Almighty", dropped in 2018). It's a little more spaced-out than its predecessor, with both Birchall and Breadwinner emphasizing weighty riddims, echoing instrumentation (sax, flute, organ etc.) and the kind of analogue effects that marked out the golden age of dub. In fact, the "golden age" reference is particularly relevant, because while there's plenty of subtle variety on show throughout, it's closer in tone to King Tubby and Lee 'Scratch' Perry's 1970s work than, say, Mad Professor or Iration Steppas. More importantly, it's also superb.

Review: For Those Who Understand is a collection of raw dubs as played on the Boom Shacka Lacka Sound System between 1991 and 1995. Eight of the best have been collated for this hard hitting long player which is often spoken about as something of a classic of the genre. Each of the tracks has been twisted, tweaked and laden with plenty of effects so that synths squeal and you can really feel the bass in your chest. Some rumble on like a weighty elephant, others strike you over the head like a hammer, but the impact either way is inedible.
