Review: Italian label 4Weed Music is all about music you might want to smoke to, as the title suggests. It's an ever-expanding indie that deals in serious sound system, dub and bass tackle. This new one 'Wonderful was originally produced on the Japan riddim which was composed and arranged by Dread Lion Hi Fi following Japan's 2011 T?hoku Earthquake and the ensuing tidal wave that struck. He wrote it in Italy and it features the line "From Milano Italy to Tokyo Japan" in honour of that over hefty low ends, steely mid-range leads and ricochetting hits. A fat dub is found on the B-side of this release which was for years thought lost until a hard disk turned up the treasure.

Review: Albert "Alchemist" Thompson's Promise Land comes courtesy of Freestyle Records and has great appearances on the mic from reggae and dancehall greats Frankie Paul, Joseph Cotton, Prince Malachi and Anthony John. It has never before been released and has had a long maturation period over the last 30 years. Albert Thompson was chief engineer at I&I Sound Recording Studio once it left LA and head to Jamaica and he saw work with greats like Dennis Brown, Bunny Wailer and Gregory Isaacs. He laid down these rhythms in 1991 during some downtime and then added the vocals 16 years later in London when working with talented local and touring Jamaican artists.

Review: Horace Andy dropped one of his most well-known cuts back in 1987. It's a lovely rootsy dancehall skank in the form of 'What A Problem' that he produced himself alongside Michael Taylo and Andy Bassford. His mic work is exceptional as he twists and turns his vocals to ride on top of the drums and deliver his message with style and grace in his textbook smooth vocal tone. The version on the flip drills down into darker and more gritty dancehall vibes with the fat bassline front and centre next to plenty of echo and reverb.

Review: Bernard Cumberbatch - presumably no relation to actor Benedict - and Garnett Cross are Aquizi, the dub duo fromed in the early 80s and Aiwa label mainstays. Their most notable 12" - aside from maybe 1981's 'Merry Christmas' was 'Kunte Kinte' earlier in the same year. It is a bit of a collector's fav that has more than held its value over the ensuing 40+ years. Driven by lazy dub swagger and carefree keys, it's a lovers rock outing peppered with toms and hits and plenty of echoing depths. Flip it over for version if you want something that will boggle the brain more with its endless mixing board effects.

Review: Arkology mixes up the old and the new here with dub, dancehall, bass, reggae and hip hop all hinted at on a new 45 rpm for Ace Tone out of Germany. The collective has been knocking out weird and wonderful takes on dub after being founded by Skorpi Gad I and Zanga back in the 1980s. Here their 'Fire Dub' is red hot fusion sound with heavy percussion, withering synth tones and devastating bass down low. The rhythm is wobbly and unpredictable making this one a heady trip. 'Education Dub' pan the backside is a more clean sound with digital synthesis snaking in and out of the drums.

Review: Noted reggae vocalist Barry Biggs comes under the Emotional Rescue microscope here with celebrated LA digger Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb remixing one of his cuts. First up is the original version of 'Illusion' which has big pianos over the clean digital dub. The soaring vocal is obscured by plenty of lush effects and melodies. After a version twists and contorts the original, the DJ Duckcomb Discomix slows things down and ups the dazzling disco vibes but keeps the dub dubby bottom end to ensure plenty of dance floor impact. In 'Binary Riddim' Steve delivers a two-part dub track spanning >13 minutes, seriously heavy in the low end; melancholy strings in the first half, progressing to outright menacing chord stabs in the latter. Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.

Review: France and Jamaica collide on this new 12" from Brother Sound, which is now up to release number three and is managing to maintain the good early standard it set for itself. J.A. legend Max Romeo is in top form on vocals with Brother Sound stepping up for the backing and production. 'Roll It Up' is a high-speed and hard-hitting dub that hurries you into shape-shifting while the vocals add extra pressure. Review: US label Planets is back with a third outing and this time they have a superb blend of roots and digi-dub with a cover of a Michael Jackson classic. AJ Brown is a noted vocalist who here serves up a rare street soul lovers' version of The King of Pop's 'Human Nature.' It's a passionate and emotive vocal work over a nice rolling beat and on the flipside it comes with an excellent instrumental dub version that allows the synth work to shine more and the funky bassline to come to the fore as the vocals are drenched in echo and reverb. Review: Pressure Sounds come through with a super 10" here with Natty Roots Controller mixed three different ways by Paolo Baldini. It is a Barry Brown original and the first remix is one with models of echo and reverb, plenty of knob twisting and heavily affected hi-hats and a rolling rhythm. Version 1 of the remix is heavier and more upright, with just as much bass weight, then the second version is lit up with some sci-fi effects. All three are delicious dubs for those who like it heady.

Review: Dennis Brown serve dup a real roots classic when he penned 'Milk and Honey.' It is a dub that still does damage and so has had a nice fresh reamster for 2022. It's an enduring anthem with plenty of praise for Jah. The prodigal comes with Clive Hunt's original 'Bitter Sweet' dub which he made under his Azul moniker. It's full of echoing synths and head melting pads as well as cavernous bass depths. On the B side, Jay Glass Dubs tackles the original with a warped sense of space and time as he deconstructs contemporary dub into something all new. This is a limited-edition white label vinyl 12" so snap it up fast.

Review: The Roots Unity label is in a real purple patch right now and has multiple 7"s dropping in quick succession. The one here is part of a slew of four drops from the Dutch label and it features esteemed roots talent, Bunnington Judah, with the in-house production team. 'Jah Children Must Rise' is organic island music with wooden, tumbling percussion and natty chords. The drums have fleshy bass and plenty of swagger next to the hypnotic flute leads. The vocals from Judah are the impassioned icing on the delicious cake. Flip it over and as always the Roots Unity crew serve up a bottomlessly deep dub version.

Review: The hard-digging record fiends at Kalita are back with more brilliance. This one is the first-ever retrospective of work by Jamaican-born artist Desmond Chambers. The first tine is a proudly politically aware tune previously only avialbel on his 1987 album Tiger Born, while the single 'The Morning Show' has before now only been available as the B side of little known single 'I Have Seen Love In Your Eyes.' The two other tracks are mega cult, hugely loved acid-infused dub snakers with boogie-infused rhythms. Original copies will cost you a huge amount so make sure you snap this one up asap.

Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is well worth inspecting, but you might struggle to find one these days, and it'll be pricey if you do, because it's become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

Review: The Mysticisms label welcomes Coral D aka Duncan Stump for a debut outing here that marks the first new music to be part of the ongoing and most excellent Dubplate series. This artist has a long history of crafting "deep dub electronic swing" in his roles in Mock & Toof, FX Mchm and his 6000 Degrees project. This one finds him bringing some dub reggae influences as 'Dissolves' is built on a chugging rhythm with smeared chords. 'DR 55' is then a masterfully laidback digi-dub groove that warps space and time and so leaves you utterly hypnotised.

Review: CosTafari is Everald Collins and he has been churning out crucial dub and reggae since the turn of the millennium. He's voiced four albums to date and plenty of EPs on labels like Roots Injection, Ark Music and I Negus Records, as well as working under tens of different aliases. 'Freedom' is a happy dub with jangling drums and perc and his cries for freedom up top. It's well-versed in the classic sound but has a fresh contemporary production twist. It comes as a dub, of course, with the rousing 'Get Up An' Fight' on the flip. This one is more laidback and spare but packs no less of a punch, not least with the charged vocals up top.

Review: D.Maximillian first put the sone out in 1999, and it was then reissued again on white vinyl in 2012. This is that version and it's a timeless dub with a lament for Jah married to losing, heart aching horns. The drums never let up and there is s subtle sci-fi style to the keys that rain down which keep it superbly futuristic. 'Moses' also comes as a shorter, tighter 'riddim - mixman dub Section' version on the flip that lays bare some of the fine mixing board magic.

Review: Soma sub-label Avoidant Records recently put out a fantastic collection fo electro cuts but it was a digital only release. Now some of the standouts from it get pulled together on this fresh new 12"that joins the dots between Europe and Detroit. DJ Godfather kicks off with some rapid fire 313 electro, squirrelling bass and slick claps then 'One Direct Line' from The Exaltics is more cosmic and blissed out with lush ambient synths. Review: Depending on your cultural references you will know that Things Fall Apart is either the title of an album by hip-hop greats The Roots, the debut 1958 novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe or Jon Ronson's latest Radio 4 series on the culture wars. Here it is a deeply mystic techno 10" by Deadbeat. Back in July, he worked with Sa Pa on their first collaborative album on the anniversary of BLKRTZ's 50th release and what a stunner it was. Review: Dubshop.nl is on a roll at this early stage in its life and for the third outing from the Dutch dub lovers we get a nice white 10" with some real heady tackle from The Disciples. Originally produced and mixed by Russ D. at the Backyard Studio and dropped in 2004 on Boom Shaka, this reissue brings two softer delights back to the fore. 'Oh Jah Jah' is a nice, slow-motion churner with mystic flute leads and natty chords. It stretches out over eight mesmerising minutes and the flipside 'Jah Militia Dub' slows things down with amore organic feel and rich percussion.

Review: DJ Squarewave and DubApe team up for a phat but stylistically sprawling dubstep EP, 'Ready & Ripe', oscillating between both the heavier and serener ends of the spectrum. A decidedly arid, sub-Saharan palette abounds, whether that be on the opening hype machine that is 'Ready & Ripe' - propelled forward by the energizing emceeing exposition of Roachee - or the bubbling sub-riddim headnod that is 'Drain'. The closing instrumental version of the title track, too, is a notable heater in its own right.

Review: Hivern Discs presents a very intriguing and totally unique project from Drames Rurals, a shadowy collective endeavour credited to "meritxell, oriol, ignasi and juns." Presented across three 7"s packed in a handmade sackcloth box, the careful presentation of the sounds matches up to the music, which rolls at low tempos and deals in hypnotic, ritualistic mantras with an earthen, spiritual feel. There's a dubby twist at times, and it feels like a series of happenings from an in-tune gathering rather than an over-composed project, and therein lies the magic. Who knows whether Hivern main man John Talabot is involved, but after last year's low-key Koraal project he might well be without making a big deal about it.

Review: Sub Merchants kick off a new 7" series with a special limited edition pressing of Drumterror ft. Dego Ranking & Ed Hodge's 'Social Dub.' The original version is as juicy as the orange depicted on the cover and finds the label head Drumterror in fine form with with the vocal talents of Ranking serving up some quick, tight bars that vibe nicely with the insistent chord stabs and heavy, rooted drums. The sax styling of Ed Hodge add extra sensuousness. On the flipside you get treated to a 'Social Version' that tweaks the original, layers in more echo and generally flips the vine to a more heady and late night sound.

Review: Chris 'The Dub Organiser' Lane meets Soothsayer Horns here and the results are simply irresistible. 'Soul Dragon Anthem' is a real gem with heart-swelling horn leads that toot and rouse. The chords are lazy and loose and a sprinkling of percussion and natty guitar riffs are integral to the rhythm overall. This 12" comes with some fresh artwork from Jeb Loy Nichols as well as three hefty dub versions, all of which do plenty of damage on a loud system. Another crucial 12" from Ital Counsellor.

Review: The mighty Dubforce served up his essential self titled solo album back in November of 2020. It packed a punch across the eight tunes and immediately sold out despite the import price. One of the standouts from it now makes its way on to its own 7". That tune is 'Liar Dub,' the sort of fat and heavy but tulles tune that could be from a mixing desk in 790s Jamaican or made in a hi-tech studio in Japan next week. The sub bass is all comforting, the hi hats leaving snaking tales and twisted vocal sounds add extra hooks. On the flip, 'Track 2' is a nice bit of contemporary Japanese roots.

He was one of the four vocalists in the harmony group who worked with producer Donovan Germain and released several classics of the day on the Greensleeves label. Review: Indica Dubs rolls out more of their steel-plated warrior anthems here with the in-house production team stepping up next to Nando for Eternal Dub. This crucial 12" opens with the title cut, which is a collab between the two that rolls on moody drums and has an enchanting melodic lead up top, snaking its way to a better future. The rework is 'Eternal Dubwise,' a more wet and bottomless affair, then Indica Dubs and Nando reunite for 'Sacred Fire' which is busier, more energetic, with broken beats and playful leads. Last of all comes the dub-wise rework that is menacing and dark for those late-night hours.

Review: Many of you reading this may recognise this song from Dennis Brown's rendition on his iconic Visions LP, but this version actually predates that one. It was originally penned by Winston MacAnuff, also known as the Electric Dread, and features vocals by Earl Sixteen. It has previously debuted as a 7" on Gibbs' Belmont label in 1975, while Sixteen went on and recorded it again for Derrick Harriott on the Wild Flower label a year later. This rendition is often considered the definitive cut, but we shall leave you to decide on that one.

Review: Jackie Edwards' 'His 'Do You Love Me' is a pure good vibes only roots reggae roller, with laid back drums and bass that sit in one another perfectly. Plenty of rousing organ chords ring out with great self delight as soothing melodies take off to the stars. Flip it over for a head melting, knob twirling remix that makes use of a vast mixing desk to bring out the dub goodness.

Review: The John Collins vaults have been dug deep into for this new 12" on SpeciaL Request. Both of the tunes have been remastered and reissued and were written by the great overs rock maestro John Collins himself. First up is the super sweet and infectiously lumpy rolling reggae of Victor Romero Evans's 'At The Club.' It's a blissed out tune with a fat bottom and silky vocals. On the flip is the much more spaced out and cosmically minded dub, 'Lift Off,' by The Detonators. It's a heady tune that invites you in deep and is perfect for those stoner Sunday sessions.

Review: The Purple Fade crew has assembled another crack team of dub heads for this fresh platter, 'Be Clean.' Fat Frog is the man charged with produciton duties and does a fine job laying down a killer rhythm with two brilliant vocals - the first is Danny Red who implores us all to be clean on the A-side, while on the flip it's Amelia Harmony who sings on 'Reach Out' and does so with a smoky and sultry tone. Both tunes of course come with slower and more spaced out dubs to complete a fine EP.

Review: Run out of Paris by DJ duo Fa_Fane and F.M., DELODIO is bringing a delightfully freaky strain of grubby lo-fi grooves to our attention, pitching somewhere between minimal wave, noisy techno and Balearic splendour. If that sounds appealing you're going to love Froid Dub, comprised of producers Francois Marche and Stephane Bodin cruising through a particularly lopsided abstraction of dub which sounds like it favours the clank of mid-range drum machines from yesteryear and their attendant synths. It's all very in-the-desk, and very cool indeed, with the blissfully surrealism of 'First Floor' being a particular highlight.

Review: Given the anger in the United States surrounding the antics of President Trump, it was almost inevitable that we'd see a cover version of Roy C Hammond and the Honey Drippers' Nixon-era funk bomb "Impeach The President" at some point. It's a great cover, too, with Fysah Thomas providing a sassy, venomous lead vocal over a fine, horns-and-drumbreaks-heavy funk backing track courtesy of backing band The Get Down Underground. On the flip they completely re-build the track, re-casting it as an authentic dub reggae workout complete with delay-laden vocal and horn snippets and an all new rhythm track. It's rather brilliant all told and arguably even better than the A-side version.

Review: Stephen Garfield Townsend is the Ghetto Priest (and also works as Levi Judah and Squiddly) and he is a rather prolific talent who has dropped five albums and some 29 EPs. This one came last year and finally arrives on wax. 'Smile' is a deep dub with endless echo and reverb swirling around the lower end as his vocals bring a smoky soul next to the wispy melodies. The flipside 'Nature Boy' is more light and airy, with sun kissed island feels and another unhurried, storytelling vocal that is delivered with grace and control.

Review: Greyscale unveils its latest endeavour, the Spectrum Series, as a way to continue to evolve its offerings and this time it is with something that makes a vibrant departure from its traditional black-and-white aesthetic. The inaugural release features the iconic Lithuanian dub track 'Kasdienybes Sventykla' by grad_u & Eazystyle MC as a way of commemorating its 15th anniversary. It came as a double CD in 2011 but now gets a first vinyl pressing on a nice 10" slab of wax. The track itself taps into the earliest roots of dub in the 70s and traces a line through the 80s with its heavyweight drums and endlessly echoing bass topped by great mic work.
