Four Weeks: Drum And Bass

Jinja (lathe cut hand-numbered hand-stamped 10" limited to 55 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: I&I 002. Rel: 24 Jan 20
  1. Jinja (4:52)
  2. Echo Park (6:09)
Review: Made using field recordings captured by Archiver on a trip to Japan in 2015, i&i Musik 002 is a two track Jungle release with layered breaks, 808 basslines & chopped up samples. "Jinja" meaning shrine in Japanese, uses recordings taken in & around the sacred Koyasan temple complex in Japan. A deep 808 sub bass backbone & classic breaks have been added to complete the picture on this unique amen roller. On the flip side, "Echo Park" combines snippets from a walk around Shinjuku Gyoen park in Tokyo, with it's echoed announcements & footstep sounds, together with recordings taken from some of Wakayama's temples & shrines. Layered classic breaks & an 808 bassline complete this distinctive track. Written & produced by Archiver & mastered by Loz at Fat As Funk. Individually lathe cut by Archiver & released as a limited edition run of 55 hand stamped & hand numbered 10" dubplates. An exclusively vinyl only affair, with no digital release. Design & artwork by Risa.

  1. When I Drop Dem Bass (feat Kenny Boothe & Daddy Freddy) (5:08)
  2. Lazer Beam (feat Awesome Don) (5:00)
Review: With a title like "When I Drop Dem Bass", you'd expect this single from Bazooka to doff a cap to the early years of jungle culture, and specifically the ragga-fired, soundsystem-busting records on which the scene was built. That's exactly what you get, with veteran mic men Daddy Freddy and Ken Boothe adding rapped and sung vocals to a punchy backing track rich in Amen breaks, powerful bass and reggae style piano stabs. The retro-futurist fun continues on side B, where a stabbing, mind-altering melody and dub-wise sounds rise above a suitably filthy rhythm track and pulverizing wobble bass.

  5. Rose Coloured Stained Glass Windows (4:38)
Review: Two don-level acts, both known for their consummate deep craft team up for five delicious soul slices. "Grow" sets the scene with its lilting pianos and soft focus, hazy vocal. It's backed up by the tougher charms of "Protected Secrets", complete with DRS on assist. Elsewhere we're taken even deeper into B&B's collaborative universe on the moody creeper "Perfect World", Lucy Kitchen joins the fray on the sunset-style "Drawn The Line" before "Rose Coloured Stained Glass Windows" closes the EP on a poignant cosmic skippy tip. "Grow" for gold.

Rory's Theme (12" 再プレス)
Cat: HHANDS 004. Rel: 14 Jan 20
  1. Rory's Theme (6:01)
  2. Puffer Jackets (6:01)
  3. Puffer Jackets (Desert Sound Colony remix) (8:35)
Review: We have no idea who Rory is, but we'd like to thank him for inspiring this beautiful slice of foundation-style breaks from Leeds-based producer Breaka. Rushed-up with emotion and sharp staccato rolling breaks, "Rory's Theme" is a deliciously authentic and evocative piece of timeless rave. "Puffer Jackets" maintains the roots feel with classic electro beats all wrapped up warm (and waterproof) with tech funk drones and atmospheres. Complete with an equally warm and reliable remix from label mates Desert Sound Colony.

  14. Subdivisions (2:40)
  15. Re-Identity (2:41)
Review: Montreal auteur Michael Silver's eighth studio album finally enjoys a vinyl version and it sounds all the better for it. His first drum & bass LP-length exploration, "Liquid Colours" nods back to the D&B's most virulent strains of the mid 90s. Think Good Looking, Moving Shadow, Ascendant Groove, the dreamy, cosmic sheen and loose, splashy drums are the perfect playground for CFCF's jazzy, contemplative and musical signature he's had since his debut album "Continent". Highlights include the twinkling Sao Paulo-destined samba of "Oxygen Lounge", the PFM-style star-gazing odyssey of "Closed Space" and the pure Creative Source flavours of "Aquascape". Dive deep.

Cat: SUBSIDE 001. Rel: 21 Jan 20
  1. Dissident - "Universe Eat Universe" (6:44)
  2. Code - "Dark Nights" (5:30)
Review: Immaculate drumfunk right here as Subtle Audio and Opposite Recordings buddy up for a trip back to some of both label boss's classics. First up is the evergreen jazz mystique of Dissident's "Universe Eat Universe". Haunted woodwind, epic spacious drums; this is the Russian enigma at his deepest and most Subtle. Code's "Dark Nights" follows on a much more paranoid, fast-lane vibe. Creepy arpeggios over ever-mutating, rolling breaks and eerie tension textures; Code had his eye on the future when he wrote this.

  1. All Massive (6:18)
  2. Golly Gosh (6:18)
  3. Mellow Days (5:16)
  4. Nostalgia (6:10)
Review: Sub Code believes we're living through a "second golden era of jungle" and given the volume and quality of revivalist mid-90s style records we've heard over the last 18 months, it's hard to disagree. This four-tracker from Essex-based Juice-E is further fuel for those who like their D&B to sound like killer cuts from the formative years of jungle culture. Our favourites include opener "All Massive", a sweaty peak-time beast that peppers a booming bassline and bustling Amen breaks with "Circles" style melodies, the thrusting sub-bass and fizzing melodies of "Mellow Days" and the insanely sub-heavy brilliance of "Nostalgia". That said the whole EP is rather good, so don't sleep!

  1. Nine Strings (4:47)
  2. Eyes (4:28)
Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

Review: The future's so bright for Monty he has to wear shades. So will you too when you drop fithlets like these and see the carnage that follows. Some of the young Frenchman's best work to date, across the full EP we're treated to the full Monty and a few cheeky cameo collaborations. Expect nothing but absolute brawlers ("STK", "Blinded"), slinky emotional ones ("Black Shield" with Visages) creepy, sewer-bound funk loaded with surprises and twists and turns ("Cursive" with the label bossman Alix Perez) and totally uncategorizable firing future funk ("Quest") Blinding.

Osiris EP (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: SMSK 004. Rel: 21 Jan 20
  1. Osiris (7:32)
  2. Osiris (Resurrection) (7:20)
Review: After only one outing on his own Synkro Musik imprint last year, Synkro bites hard into a new decade with this deep dive into Egyptian mythology. Two sides, one tale: "Osiris" pays homage to the ancient murdered king in two ways. Firstly as a sweeping, steppy sojourn laced in classic Synkro fashion - roomy, springy, ageless. The resurrection on the B lives up to its name, too; stripping away the drums and bass and letting the pads shine, it's a dense weave of sombre ambient textures that will work perfectly for intros and creative mixing. Synkro's starting the 20s as he means to go on.

  3. Unreleased (6:03)
  4. Undertone (5:40)
Review: Following FFF's beautifully brutal slab of nostalgia on Fokuz's white label series, "Outlook" is another authentic mission into the foundations. Courtesy of an anonymous (but massive) artist who you will all know (but we can't reveal on our mother's lives) each cut rattles and slaps with jungle authority. Highlights include the soulful hurricane and lavish drums of "Unreleased" and those stunning Goodlooking style pads and chords on "Outlook". Vibez for milez.

  1. Possessions (vocal mix) (5:49)
  2. Possessions (Late Night Swing) (4:46)
Review: Moscow's Okbron continues its mission to serve up drum & bass gold from the vaults, this time turning to some smooth flowing liquid from the legendary Pete Voyager. Amazingly, this tune never saw the light of day before. It was written for his second album with vocals from a friend of his, but the album was never released so the music got shelved. When someone hit up Voyager for an ID that happened to be for this tune on one of Bukem's old radio shows, he decided to upload it to Soundcloud and eventually it came to the attention of Okbron. Thank god for that.

  1. Your Moves (4:33)
  2. Doughy (5:43)
  3. Didger (4:53)
  4. Make Me (5:40)
Review: Not to be confused with the punk-era Sheffield outfit of the same name, Workforce is the solo alias of SpectraSoul man Jack Stevens. Here he makes his first appearance on EXIT following two EPs on Must Make. He hits the ground running with the sparse, stripped-back drum and bass mutations of "Your Moves" - all mangled R&B vocal snippets, tense drums and booming bass - before moving in a more slick and soulful direction on "Doughy". Over on the flip, "Didger" sounds like Nine Inch Nails making D&B with Ed Rush and Optical, while closing cut "Make Me" wraps fuzzy, distorted electronics and brief vocal snippets around a glitchy D&B rhythm.
