Swinging Flavors #7 (blue vinyl 7")
Cat: BMRSF 007. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Damn Hot (4:31)
  2. Damn Hot (Danny Scrilla remix) (4:52)
Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

  15. Helios
Review: With their spiralling synth melodies, bombastic rhythms and attractive pop hooks, Austrian duo Camo and Krooked are fast becoming one of drum & bass's biggest attractions. Their sound - bold, attractive, brash and shot through with electronic funk - is a perfect fit with Hospital Records' current fascination with festival-friendly drum and bass. This fourth album for Tony Colman's veteran imprint delivers more smile-inducing thrills, offering the kind of fare that should find wider appeal outside the D&B scene. Unashamedly dancefloor-focused, Zeitgeist oozes positivity, from the tropical jungle of "Aurrora" and darkside pomp of "Ruhepuls", to the cut-up white-knuckle ride that is "Vice".

Infinity (12")
Cat: RAMM 243. Rel: 03 Feb 17
  1. Infinity (4:42)
  2. Embargo (4:57)
Review: Whoever put DC Breaks and Prolix in the same room should take the week off. Ridiculously good work there... As proved by these two insane dancefloor scrappers. "Infinity" is a real drama session with Upbeats-style drones on the fills, neuro tones in the bass and a breakdown that will crush you. "Embargo" is almost punk like in its unruly raffishness. Suzzy, distorted and fizzing with badness, this will slay any floor from any corner. Incredible scenes.

  2. Streetcleaner (5:44)
  3. Pyrosome (5:49)
  4. Nabilone (5:44)
Review: His first fresh material to land since his powerful debut LP document Negative Space, Homemade Weapons returns to Samurai with four more outstanding 23rd century jungle compositions. "Heiress" impresses instantly with jittering breaks, scorching textures and molten reese basses. "Street Cleaner" is a rifle-like militant drum assault while "Pyrosome" rattles with an unusually funky shuffle for the Canadian artist, hitting in a way that's not dissimilar to Paradox. Finally "Nabilone" rounds off with a brutal fusion of breaks, spliced savagely over densely pressurised atmospheres. This heiress's throne awaits....

  1. Break Glass (6:11)
  2. 600K (4:42)
  3. Obnox (4:49)
  4. Dissolve (6:52)
Review: Mark System's last outing on Exit, 2015's Final Approach LP, was almost universally praised for its pleasing fusion of bombastic, tech-step influenced bottom end and dreamy, ear-pleasing liquid D&B elements. The long-serving producer has taken a similar approach on this belated follow-up EP. While opener "Break Glass" is a little creepier than previous efforts - if no less punchy and bass-heavy - it retains System's instinctive grasp of the dynamics of light and shade. "600K" brilliantly joins the dots between classic jungle, modern tech-step and 8-bit games soundtracks, while "Obnox" dips crunchy beats in wild electronics to brilliant effect. Best of all, though, is closer "Dissolve", a superior deep space roller that sounds like it was recorded using some vintage electronic hardware.

  5. Can't Get Over You (feat Lenzman & Big Brooklyn Red) (5:24)
Review: Following the likes of FD, Redeyes and label boss Lenzman himself, Submorphics is the latest to step up to The North Quarter hot seat with his own take on soulful drum & bass. Expressing his widest range and the warmest shades of his palette, the San Francisco vibe flexor delivers his finest; the yearning gutsy soul of "Don't Be So Cold", the heads-down sultry ripples of "Whatchudo", the swaggering hip-hop swing of "Hot Ish", the whirling almost psychedelic textures to the organs and Steo's stunning vocals on "Weather It Out" and the all-out soul belts of "Can't Get Over You". Five slices of genuine soulful drum & bass gold; Lenzman knows what he's up to with The Norther Quarter.

  1. Lifted (5:08)
  2. Rotten (5:11)
  3. Rotten (Sam Binga remix) (4:42)
Review: You know a new label is serious when they launch with vinyl. You also know a new label is serious when they launch with an act as on-point and skillishly sharp as Sully... And commission a remix from Critical's stinky breddah Sam Binga. Yeah, Rua Sound are doing everything right: "Lifted" nods lightly at Horizons-era Bukem but with more amen addling while "Rotten" packs a skankier jungle punch. Binga's remix? Wonderfully sludgy. More of this please Rua.

  13. Fracture - "Dropping You" (4:38)
  14. Sully - "Qualia" (5:30)
Review: Astrophonica's first Fracture curated "Gradient" compilation, released in early 2017, was something of an overlooked delight; a killer collection of imaginative and occasionally off-kilter drum and bass cuts that defied lazy categorization. Happily, this follow-up is, of anything, even better. Compare and contrast, for example, the razor-sharp, hot-stepping ragga/dubstep/D&B fusion of Sam Binga, Lewis James and Rider Shafique's "Ever Fresh", and the thrilling jungle/acid house fusion of Luke Vibert's brilliantly bonkers "165 303". Or, for that matter, the sax-laden depth of BSN Posse's half-time "No Matter How Far", or the bass-weight dubstep heaviness of "Hennessy Brown" by Groves. Throw in similarly impressive cuts from Falty DL, Sully, Dream Continuum and Fracture himself, and you have a wonderfully diverse and on-point set of tracks.
