Alix Perez - "White Lies" (4:52)
Submarine - "Grunge" (5:15)
Scepticz & Lavance - "Flatline" (4:07)
Hyroglifics & Visages - "Searching" (4:19)
Review: Some 15 months after the first multi-artist "Folio" EP landed in stores, 1985 Music has dropped a sequel. It's another all-action affair, with all four cuts hitting home hard. Label founder Alix Perez kicks things off with "White Lies", a minimalist roller where metallic percussion hits and evocative soul vocals rise above a thoroughly filthy, wobble-powered bassline. Label favourites Submarine step up with sub-heavy hot-stepper "Grunge", before Scepticz and Lavance take things up a notch or two via the industrial strength distorted bass, mind-altering electronics and punchy beats of "Flatline". To round things off, Hyroglifics and Visages get together on the skewed but energy-packed creepiness of "Searching".

Allied - "Nth Degree" (5:20)
Allied & Lockjaw - "Flow State" (5:32)
Review: Concussion continues to its underground operations with two grunting 3am rollers from Brighton's Allied. Fresh from their Methlab adventures last year, here we find them in a distinct Dispatch mood with a understated sandpaper funk feel running throughout the dark groove. Flip for "Flow State", a heavier, grizzlier piece of work with dubbed out synths, infectious shakers and a bed of subs so thick and heavy you could feed a family of 10 off them for three years. Proper.

Re:align EP

Alternate Current - "Borrowed Language" (6:22)
Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

Samurai Music Decade Phase 2 Part 4

Ancestral Voices - "Hypersigil" (6:07)
ASC - "Area Check" (6:07)
Lemna - "Rahu" (6:34)
Sam KDC - "Locus" (5:03)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing series of celebratory Decade EPs, Samurai Music has decided to showcase new works by producers known for looking beyond the conventional boundaries of drum and bass. The action kicks off with a wonderfully creepy, feverish and hypnotic workout from Ancestral Voices that abandons traditional D&B tropes in favour of trippy rhythms and an admirable experimental ethos. ASC's thrillingly weighty and industrial-tinged "Area Check" takes a similar approach, while Lemna's "Rahu" - a buzzing and mind-altering excursion - sits somewhere between experimental D&B, slipped dubstep and Livity Sound style off-kilter techno. Sam KDC's "Locus", meanwhile, is the audio equivalent of a hallucinatory trip down the Amazon with only horror movie melodies and slowly intensifying, tribal-tinged rhythms for company.

Greenleaf & Ornette Hawkins - "Essential" (6:59)
Latent Notion - "Lapse" (5:59)
Review: Wake up and smell the breakbeat! Transmute return with another absurdly good collection of tracks from friends old and new. The mysterious Army Of Ghosts set the scene with the breezy, deep and beautifully Good Looking-esque 'Dreaming'. Greenleaf and Ornette Hawkins follow with some of the wildest drums you'll hear this season. Cosmic jazz right down to the twinkling keys, this will fry minds! Finally Latent Notion closes on a deep space stepper vibe with 'Lapse'. Timeless time travelling... Sleeping is for winners.

Warhorse
Warhorse (10")

Artificial Intelligence - "Warhosre" (feat DRS)
Loxy & Resound - "Paradigms"
Review: Has it really been over ten years since the last Platinum Breakz compilation? Ahead of Metalheadz dropping Vol 4 of the most revered compilation series in Drum & Bass, a second two track sampler arrives to further whet appetites - as if that needs to happen - with cuts from Artificial Intelligence and DRS and the Rufige pair of Loxy and Resound. Glenn and Zula sound on inspired form with "Warhorse" a powerful, snarling steppers anthem that's made all the more venomous thanks to DRS's vocal contribution. Face down, Loxy & Resound rep the Rufige sound and indulge in some vintage Metalheadz flavours on "Paradigms" which is pitched perfectly between elements of darkness (Reese drops, mangled breakbeats) and light (haunting vocal harmonies and swirling synths).

Asymmetric - "Don't Trust The Words"
Limit - "So Good"
Asymmetric - "Influence"
Sonic Art - "Vostok1" (Asymmetric & Limit remix)
Review: Evgenly Sergeev is busy building an empire of Russian jungle and drum funk via his Dissymmetrical label and his two primary aliases, Asymmetric and Limit. Quite where the lines are drawn between the two is open to interpretation, although it hardly matters when the tracks are as savagely on point as this. "Don't Trust The Words" blasts the record open with a salvo of break choppage to get your head spinning, all underpinned by haunting atmospheric details. "So Good" is a smoother jam taking its cue from early Good Looking Records, and then "Influence" comes in with a darkside romp through cinematic pads and ruffneck amens. The closing track is in fact an Asymmetric & Limit remix of "Vostok1" by Sonic Art, and it spirals into a dreamlike haze of mellow jungle to soothe the soul.

Asymmetric - "Stormy" (7:12)
Asymmetric - "Quarantine" (7:15)
Asymmetric + Limit - "Transzendental" (7:49)
Asymmetric + Limit - "Jazz Is..." (6:35)
Review: Limit and Asymmetric are in fact both the work of St. Petersburg-based producer Evgeniy Sergeev, who has been building up a library of contemporary D&B productions digitally and now makes the leap to vinyl with some of the strongest of his productions to date. "Stormy" is aptly titled as it rips with ferocity through mangled breaks, rave stabs and hoovers aplenty and "Quarantine" is a quintessential darkside jam with more of that tricksy drum programming. The B-side offers a little more respite with the sunkissed tones of "Transzendental" and the soulful yet ruff mood of "Jazz Is..." making a smart counterpoint to the heavier A side.

Limit - "Tell Me" (6:10)
Limit & Asymmetric - "Tonight" (7:48)
Review: Jungle heads strap in because this is some high grade, high octane tackle that id dense and physical and turned up to 100. Asymmetric kick off with 'Choppage' which is a potent breakbeat fusion with maximal sound designs and tight drum fills all demanding you make moves. Limit releases the pressure with a much more soulful and sparse jungle roller with rich, rubber bass and spine tingling vocals. Limit then kick off the flip side with 'Tell Me' and its raucous amens and vamping chords. Last of all, Limit & Asymmetric round out with 'Tonight' which features a classic vocal that tugs at the heart strings.

Review: Two hard but hearty tracks for any dancefloor at any time. 'Handz Up' is a tense rollercoaster ride: a stomping bassline with vast subs pave the way for crystal clear funky beats, while the sitar riffs fill you with energy. Lastrack - "Axel Phif" (part 2) (5:30)
Jean Redondo - "Gen" (5:01)
Review: More spatial exorcisms from the BFDM family. New and old faces alike, all French, it's the label's broadest and heaviest V/A wax to date. Basses Terres takes us deep in the machine with a well oiled slo-mo pneumatic break, Comic Sans-slinger C.R.K cooks up a spicy gumbo of militant apocalypse electro while Jonquera continues the electroid theme with a devilish pitched snare roll and wry synth slap bass pops and twang. Elsewhere Lastrack insists we travel to Jupiter by way of the Amazon while Daxyl's Jean Redondo closes the show on a schizoid broken techno freak out. Stark.

BCee - "Sincerely Yours" (feat Leo Wood - Whiney remix) (4:50)
Villem & McLeod - "Let It Breathe" (feat Leo Wood - Phaction remix) (5:14)
Review: Drum & bass fans will know the originals here as they've been big on the circuit. Now they get the remix treatment from two big dawgs in Whiney and Phaction. Whiney is first and layers in some devastating bass to BCee's 'Sincerely Yours', which repurposes it as a heavyweight peak time flex banger. High Contrast, DJ Marko and Reve LaVice have all been banging these already, and it might just be the flip-side that is the best. Phaction puts a golden touch on Villem & McLeod's 'Let It Breathe' that takes it form smooth roller to big time banger.

Luis Pitti - "Rhythm Code" (6:05)
Luis Pitti - "Back To The Beginning 2.0" (6:10)
Review: Bennasar and Luis Pitti take care of two tracks each on this split EP for Hardcore finalists that takes you all the way back. The rude boy old school sounds abound from the off with Bennasar's 'My House' working a hip house vocal into a high speed breakbeat. The big rave stabs will always get monster reactions, while 'Raggamuffin DJ' is another dark but enticing drum workout with crashing hits and turbo-charged stabs. Luis Pitti's 'Rhythm Code' keeps the vibes alive with high-energy jungle sounds and machine-gun synths then rounds things out with 'Back To The Beginning 2.0.' It's the darkest of the lot.

Fool In Your Eyes
Cat: HZN 013. Rel: 16 Aug 06
Track 1
Track 2
Review: Ireland has always held an interesting place in the d&b realm. Calibre seems to get most of the praise, which is well deserved, but over the last few years, Beta 2 has been staking his claim as one producer not to be taken lightly. With releases on labels like Metalheadz, Bassbin, Nu Directions, Reinforced, as well as his acclaimed tunes with partner Zero Tolerance, he has built a solid repertoire for tunes that straddle the line between liquid and dub, deep and runnin'. This 12", his debut on Horizons Music, is no exception. "Fool In Your Eyes" pits Beta 2 with Lariman, for a dynamic excursion into some liquid terrain. Silky smooth vocals ride over the synth-heavy melodies. That hardness of the kick and the snare is set contrast to a real invigorating bassline, one designed to get waists wound and feet skanking. Beta 2 rides solo for "From A Dream", which is a bit darker and rougher that the A-side. Very headz-sounding, this one combines a nicely edited break and some twisted synth work to create a beautifully dark creature. It's hard to deny a track that digs so deep but still knows how to get you grooving.

Brain Killers - "Loving" (part 1)
Lewi - "Loving" (part 2)
Review: Back to 94! Kemet reissue a seminal slab of breakbeat soul in the form of 'Loving' from Brain Killers and their long-time collaborator Lewi Cifer. Both acts taking the same sample and twisting it in their own way to create two parts, DJ Apache and DJ Unknown's Brain Killers operation goes for more of a party swagger and strong hip-hop and ragga influences while Lewi (who attained the name and reputation of Lewi Screwface due to his previous collabs with the Brain Killers) goes for more of a brutalist drum funk vibe. Still sounding future as hell.

Review: Since 2003, the Intrigue crew has been providing Bristol clubbers with regular doses of liquid funk and musically expansive drum and bass, first at their regular parties and, since 2008, on their offshoot label. Predictably, there's much to enjoy on this celebratory 12". Old pal Break steps up first with a veritable warm summer breeze of a roller, "Mind's Eye" - all punchy, snare-heavy beats, acoustic guitars, rumbling bass and dreamy freestyle vocals - before Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape join forces for the slightly more weighty but no less attractive "Justa". Over on side B, Soundscape returns to action alongside Ryogreen and Protone on the wobble bass-propelled stepper "Ruffneck", while Lurch - a lesser-known stalwart of the Bristol scene - delivers some delicious, Afro-tinged liquid funk alongside Joakuim. Rock solid.

Battery - "Essence" (6:07)
Loxy & Resound - "The Hour" (6:06)
NC-17 - "Jet Lagged" (5:21)
Review: Techstep pioneers Renegade are set to shut up shop next year, so make the most of these final releases... Four tracks heavy, this EP sums up every reason Renegade has developed such a strong reputation in the game: BTK & Cold Fusion show us how vocals can be done in a big way without sounding cheesy on "Not Your Idol" while Battery (Craggs and Parallel's new project) is a joy ride straight back to 1994 in a 2025-built car. Loxy & Resound switch up their dubbier motifs for something much harder and darker but still ultimately lean and sinewy and finally NC-17 closes the show with a firing slice of nasty. With a fine-tuned Reece that whistles like a wasp, this could have been dropped at any Renegade party over the last 15 years and would guarantee a rewind each and every time.

Bungle whips up a powerful brew of funky guitar licks, haunting atmospherics and pounding bass overlaid with Laura Pacheco's strong vocal hooks. "Resized" will make you move your body in the club while the vocal will stick in your head for days afterwards. The Cambridge Four aka Nu Tone/Logistics/Commix - "When Pilots Eject"
Nu Tone - "The Boy Who Lost His Smile"
Logistics - "Never Ending Story"
Commix - "Scarlet"
Review: In 2004 the original ‘Future Sound of Cambridge’ EP was re-released and has been solid ever since. Two years on, the new boys have come back as 1st choice players, Fabio, Friction, Fight, Andy C and most of the a-list DJ's are all over these tracks. Nu:Tone, Commix and Logistics join forces as ‘The Cambridge Four’ to kick the EP off with ‘When Pilots Eject’ where Boymerang beats run the show. Nu:Tone’s 'Boy who lost his Smile' adds house flavour and chopped up vox and roving beats. Logistics, 'Never Ending Story' brings order, sounds and massive synths to the table, whilst the finale comes from Commix’s 'Scaret' a spooky track with horns and piano breakdown.

Davide Carbone & Kubiks - "Ready With This" (Craggz & Parallel Forces remix)
Bcee & Lomax - "Help You"
Review: Laurels, Intrinsic Recordings is back once again with another killer 12". Enlisting Valve's own Geordie wonder kids to remix 'Ready With This' and taking on another slice of liquid heaven in the form of B Cee & Lomax's 'Help You'. Time for Intrinsic to bring on the big guns! Having lent their expert skills to rework tunes from Roni Size, London Elektricity, Artificial Intelligence and Noisia (under their Drifter guise), now Craggz & Parallel Forces bring their distinctive sound to 'Ready With This'. Taking the vibe of the original and adding luscious strings, rolling percussion, trademark clattering beats and speaker busting bass, Craggz & Parallel have turned an already dancefloor friendly tune into a monster! No wonder Fabio likes it so much. On the flip Intrinsic is proud to welcome back B Cee & Lomax with (in our opinion) their best tune to date. 'Help You' mixes razor sharp beats, punch drunk pads and encoded vocals into a liquid cocktail you will want to drink down over and over again. This one has been cained by B Cee & Lomax, shamelessly plugging their own tune in every club going.

Review: Living up to its name in every way, Scope delves deeper into the furthest expanses of contemporary composition than any other compilation has dared to delve. Its fifth sampler, here we find the heavier, more beat-focused material of the album brought to the fore. From sharpened steppy, hip-snapping riddims such as "Helix" and and "0996" to more tension-based material where suspense is tightly weaved into thundering percussion and the carefully drawn out dynamics such as "Project No Name" and "Wired", each of these four cuts pushes the concept of bass music into entirely new realms. The EP kicks off with a monstrous collaboration between Counterstrike and Eye-D entitled "The Grind". A monster filled with filth that makes you want to grind your teeth on the streets. On the flip Catacomb unleashes "Gut Wrench" - a nasty futuristic crawler with an actual gut-wrenching bassline powered by running hard-edged catabeats. "Last Call" is Limewax at his best. A neat contrast to his screwface adventures with the freshly reformed Bad Company, this track is a lesson in fine drum tuning and spacious bass placement. The Swiss producers serve up an impressive EP full of half time drum 'n' bass experiments that lurk in the genre's grey area. Review: There's been plenty of hype surrounding this collaboration between Dogger, Mindstate and Liam Bailey on Alix Perez's on-point 1985 Music label. Listening to the tracks, it's easy to see why. The trio's style is effortlessly soulful and gorgeously sun-kissed, with solid rhythms and basslines being accompanied by glistening guitar flourishes, dreamy vocals, warm pianos and chords that push positivity from and centre. LIN001 (4:33)
LIN002 (5:19)
LIN003 (4:40)
LIN004 (4:10)
Review: The North Quarter locks in another superbly stylish EP of functional but characterful drum & bass rhythms here. This one comes from LIN000 and features bunch of self titled tracks. The first is a supper, with fluid bass and low end oscillations. The second is more roomy and cancerous. It operates in an underwater world of bendy bass and crisp hits, then the flip side opens with a more raw, textural and fixing mix of synths and clacking hits before the closer pairs a high speed breakbeat with synths that twist and turn at their own speed.

Fellowship - "Free Girl"
LAOS - "Beautiful"
Review: Label owner Fellowship finally delivers his next release in the shape of "Free Girl". This heavyweight track is a firm favourite of Fabio, featuring heavily on his Radio 1 shows, and is also receiving airplay from many leading DJ's. Flip over for a truly gorgeous roller by a new artist to Defunked called L.A.O.S. (Large Amount Of Soul). "Beautiful" definitely reflects their artist name as it is a soulful gem that has received huge support from Bryan Gee amongst others.

GLXY - "Sweet Lows" (feat Rhi)
Koherent - "Endless Haze"
Linguistics - "Change" (feat Dogger & Mindstate & Blind Mic)
GEST - "Shame"
Review: The much-acclaimed Shuriken series might as well be the current pinnacle of drum n' bass V/A releasing - and it's all thanks to the experts over at Shogun Audio, who have their fingers in all the pies. On the eighth edition of the series, we're reminded of the fact that dn'b might just be one of the most challenging music styles to make - mega-compression, low-mid-boosted snap-snares and ultra-processed vocals all make themselves clear on GLXY's 'Sweet Lows', which is an ironic name since no part of the tune is a low. It becomes clear that Vol. 8 is an all-vocal affair: Koherent's 'Endless Haze' is a straight heavenly roller with insistences peppering the vocal mix that it's 'for you'. GEST's 'Shame', meanwhile, takes the other path - devilish reeses, maddening plucks, and lost and desperate voices urging us to hang our heads.

Gest - "Shame" (4:31)
Review: Shogun Audio's limited edition black series is back with more of that addictive 12" crack. This is an eighth volume of their Shrunken series and another classy various artists affair. GLXY get things rolling, literally, with their soulful roller 'New Soul' complete with meditative vocals. Koherent's 'Endless Haze' is another beautifully deft and deep drum & bass seducer with angelic vocal hints and Linguistics, Dogger & Mindstate then come through with the optimistic chords and mindful bars of 'Change' feat Blind Mic. Gest leaves a darker taste with the more tense 'Shame.'

Submotive, Lenzman & Jubei - "Members Only" (4:50)
Review: Releases like this demonstrate the utter vanguard of British drum & bass. It's as if this were a G20 summit for some of the genre's most eminent lords, as we hear Goldie, Jubei, Submotive and Lenzman all team up for a four-way rampage. Both tunes on this lethal weapon, through well-placed Reeses and complex metallic snare rebounds, convey the mood of utter dark fantasy. The mood is that of being graced by the presence of monstrously regal higher sonic powers.

High Contrast - "If We Ever VIP"
Logistics - "Closer"
Review: Now firmly established as the drum and bass label of choice for those who like it with a disco tinge, Tony Colman's Hospital imprint reached their 15th anniversary recently and dropped a heavyweight compilation last week to celebrate. Attempts to appease those that prefer their amens to roll out from a slice of wax are made with this, the first of two twelve inch samplers containing a double dose of tracks from the aforementioned Fifteen Years of Hospital release. Given their long standing service for Hospital it's only right that High Contrast and Logistics line up either side here! The former drops a killer VIP refix of his now classic Hospital contribution "If We Ever" which was originally out back in 2007, whilst Logistics graces us with a totally fresh cut in the shape of "Closer".

Impish & Vasilisa - "Haze"
Hidden Element & Liquid Break - "I See The Light (In Your Eyes)" (feat Kiyomi)
Review: A brand new sub-label from Audio Plants, Burelom cut their floodlight-focus through the darker, foggier forests of D&B. A chiefly Russian affair - mastered by the one and only Enei - both of these cuts come with the perfect balance of grit and soul. "Haze" comes with a distinctive vocal that's delivered with a big band in mind. Jazzy, sassy and emphatic, it will grab the attention of your floor instantly. "I See The Light" is a deeper affair with oceanic pads, an emotional synth hook and drums that are so well they constantly sound like they're rising. A highly accomplished debut label release.

Loxy & Ink - "Irrelevant" (6:26)
Ink, Loxy & Resound - "Token" (5:39)
Review: This might be a new Metalheadz 12" but it has a throwback, vintage feel to it. Part of that is no doubt because of the three legendary artists it involves in Ink, Loxy & Resound. Loxy & Ink go first and serve up the superbly space-age sounds this label has always been known for on 'Irrelevant'. On the flipside, things get a little darker. Resound joins the fray for 'Token' and sinister sounds and menacing bass prevail. These are ageless tunes that will unite new and old heads alike. Essential stuff from the ever-green Metalheadz.

Keaton & Hive - "Retreat"
Loxy - "A Quest For Hope"
Review: On this release Loxy, Keaton and Hive pay no attention to the current sound of dance-floor 'Drum & Bass' creating two equally exciting aurally visual worlds of their own. Taking it back to the near 'X-tinct' era of the Metalheadz / Logical Progression 96 / 97 Sound, sculpted with 2006 finessed production. 'RETREAT'-KEATON & HIVE "They realised that to be in power you didn't need guns, or money, or even numbers, you just needed the will to do what the other guy wouldn't" Armed warriors charge into battle on a two part journey: In preparation for war Samurai soldiers focus their energy by following a hypnotic Tibetan tone using visual meditation. The battle stirs with distorted drums beating half time rhythms. Military rolls break the step as troops begin a march led by armed assaulting snares attacking in trademark cycles set to the pace of a dooming warmonger timpani line. The fight erupts with screaming horns, war cry's and skilled use of hideous unknown weapons of future mass destruction. Pausing for round two the soldiers recharge in a stream of equanimity, returning to conquer the opponent with unforeseen styles from ancient scriptures, retreating only to hidden territory after a strategic but silent victory. 'A QUEST FOR HOPE'-LOXY' A soul soothing voyage, beginning from the depths of tranquil waters washing onto the shores of a land time forgot. Tropical Birds call out signalling exotic tribes to drum apache styles against natty bongo rhythms. The dance commences into carnival groove with a earth shaking, dubbed out heavy weight sub bass-line, supported by ferocious wall of crunched amen breaks. Roaring through explored terrain, halfway into the journey the passenger swiftly rises above the water smoothly skimming the surface upon an uplifting, harmonious sequence of chords. From the bottom of the Amazon, through humid, unexplored, vine-filled jungles, across misty forest tree tops, Loxy creates a beautiful audio painting to carrying the traveller away from the chaos of modern day life.

Review: Big slice of pure future funk d&b with a hint of the old school, and you know the track is about to drop hard when you hear the "I'm going to take the advantage of the dark" vocal. Tough stepping drums and deep twisted analogue bass, keeps the groove rolling nicely. With "Subway" on the flip, Leon goes solo for the eerie pads, growling bass and stabs. Clever drum edits and subtle percussion keeps the tune motoring along nicely. A guaranteed smasher!

Review: Addictive Behaviour continue to ensure the UK has a place in the current neuro phenomenon with two walloping techy rollers. L 33's "Badman" lives up to its name as the savage energy peaks throughout and a paranoid bass technique rises and rises in a way that's not dissimilar to Sub Focus's early work. Human Condition
Review: Having flirted with Radio One playlist action and skirted around Top 40 success, Drumsound & Bassline Smith's Technique imprint keep it real by nurturing new talent. Enter L Plus: perpetrator of the more rambunctious side of jump up D&B, his Time Travel EP kicks off with the Camo & Krooked meets Chromeo style venture title track, full of pumping drums, sci-fi samples and 80s synth-pop moments. A similar energy pervades the flip too, "Human Condition" being another dance floor burner, stewing a melange of video game fx with crunchy drums, warping basslines and all round and jungle trumping goodness.

Brazilian badboy L Side gets the remix treatment from some exceptional names in drum & bass right here on V Recordings. Break sets the benchmark once again with the already stunning 'High Times' with Fats. Dogger & Mindstate make the soulful Manchester connection on the DRS-fronted 'No Sound' while Alibi turn 'Night Prowler' into a disturbingly dark shock-out. But most importantly, we have one of Spirit's last ever productions here with his remix of 'Spellbound'. Made not long before he passed in 2018, it hits just as sharp and forthright as he always did. Rest in peace.
