Review: A year on from their debut appearance, Archangel is back at it on Dutch d&b label Fokuz with more of the atmospheric, emotionally-charged gear they delivered on their two previous EPs. This is a suite of moody rollers in the cinematic sense of the term, all brooding melodic arrangement and forlorn vocals atop crisply programmed beats. Hiraeth's epic remix of 'Sound Of Silence' originally arrived on prior dici-only EP Android Waltz, but it was more than deserving of a chance to step out on wax, while Faction gets busy weaving deft tech step touches around 'Life Indoors'. It's a powerful, captivating listen from a talent firmly on an upward trajectory.

Review: In contrast to the deluge of raw d&b we've let through the floodgates this week, ASC's latest EP is a dreamy and twinkly scene-setter. Nodding to the presence of godlike, benevolent celestial beings behind the beats, tracks like 'Averted Visions' and 'Aphelion's Edge' seem to be getting at something like a divine ideal of space jungle. They play up the entrancing possibilities of the breakbeat (however lo-fi the original drum samples are) rather than their banger potential.

Review: Building on his pre-existing legacy in atmospheric drum & bass, Simon Huxtable has found a rich seam of collaboration with ASC on the Spatial label, and he returns for a new clutch of immersive, compelling pieces that tip closer to introspective listening material than anything dance floor-minded. 'Luminosity' in particular is a haunting composition with light-touch breaks chopped with an elegant approach, more than matching the thoughtful surroundings. Things get even deeper on 'Moonscape', even if there's space for a proper break to kick in, but hold on for the nimble Apache flourishes skipping across vast dunes of harmony on 'Sunlight Through Clouds' - truly masterful, mesmerising excursions from an expert in the approach.

Review: 'As We Enter' is the first single from Nas and Damian Marley's collaborative album Distant Relatives and whether or not that influenced the also of this drum & bass producer we do not know. Musically there is little in common as this new EP shows - it is a hardcore mix of jostling amen breaks designed to be heard loud. 'Surrender' is backed with smeared pads that bring the soul and devastating low end bass, while 'Breezin' is a hyperactive sound that darts about all over the place. There is all out vocal wildness on 'Take Me' and last of all come more monstrous breakbeats and raved up synths on 'The Force.'

Review: Curing what ails you, Dokta Venom slaps down a full prescription pad at AKO HQ with four marvellous medicines. Following the heavyweight 'Dreadnox' on 'AKOizm Vol 4' last year, each of these tracks reveals a different side to this brutalist quack; 'Sound Lord' is pure 3am slammage, all bulldozer breaks and such, 'Eden's Rise' is a breezy pad-heavy goosebump bonanza while the title track 'The Artistic Truth' flips things with much more of a jazzy, abstract twist. Finally 'Speed Jazz' finishes the dosage on a mellow cosmic soul touch. Get well soon.

Review: Space jungle extraordinaire ASC is as prolific as they come, and this week he's back again with 'Sphere Of Influence', a synth-heavy present-day take on the dreamy origins of his chosen sound. Beginning with 'The Arcane', we're most struck with ASC's emphasis on atmospherics and synthwork - they come first compared to his relatively functional breakscience, which are like godlike apparatuses guiding us through heavily nuanced, heavenly vistas. That functionality goes out of the window with 'Threeform', though - an unusually sound-designed number which introduces suddenly-huge variation in the breaks, in what is said to be ¾ time.

Review: Simon Huxtable's Aural Imbalance project remains as productive as ever some 25 years on from the first releases, and now newer labels like Okbron are stepping up to carry his work after taking so much inspiration from his approach to atmospheric drum & bass. Despite Okbron's capacity for reissues it seems these two joints are new transmissions and they certainly have a sparkling finish which speaks to Huxtable's experience and precision in the studio, but there's also a gritty bite to the breaks and some rich depth to the synth work which ensures there's a generous dose of personality in these luxurious excursions into the deeper end of d&b.

Review: Audio Soul Project returns with fresh vinyl here in the form of their Simurgh EP, which is named after a mythical Persian bird. Across the tunes you'll find a fusion of dub, d&B, house and even r&b to make for an alluring sonic trip. Opener 'Deliver Me' brings the warmth and soul with balmy chords over raw, woody drums with a big diva vocal up top. Things are paired back for 'Azizam Dub' which has a subsonic bass line bump and synth stabs bringing the energy. 'Internal Vybrations' is d&b powered by monstrous bass with hi-hats, shakers and maracas detailing the rhythm, and last of all 'Celebration Dub' brings a funky and summery house vibe perfect for outdoor dancing. This is as varied an EP as you'll hear this season.

Calibre's take on Alix Perez, Spectrasoul and Peven Everett's 'Forsaken' is up there with the original in terms of its beauty and simplicity. Meanwhile on the B, Phace gives Icicle and SP:MC a total neuro shoeing before we end Ivy Lab's evergreen take on Spectrasoul & dBridge's 'Glimpse', arguably one of the finest cuts Shogun has ever released. Review: Simon Huxtable is the UK artist behind the Aural Imbalance alias and after a couple of solid outings in 2022 he starts 2023 on a similarly strong footing. This pink vinyl on the Spatial label opens with archetypal amen breaks straight from the 90s on 'Parallel Universe'. Subtle funk melodies add the colour then crisp breaks define 'Warning Sine' with its textural synth lines and atmospheric breakdowns. There is a rolling and blissed out feel to the analogue drum sounds of 'Syren of Hyperion' while 'Genesis' rains down gorgeous melodies and catchy beat patterns to close out another innovative outing for Huxtable.

Review: Okbron returns for a fresh new jungle twin-flame-kindling, in the form of two new vinyl cuts by UK producer Axis. Something rather new - basking in a funny interzone between jazzstep and techsteppy jungle - appears on these two titles, with 'Lead The Element' never letting up on its ethereal backing pads despite its contrastingly propulsive bass, and the titular 'Over The Horizon' evoking the feeling of gazing off into heavenly distances with its whooping spiritual jazz samples and chorus'ed bass and guitar licks.

This EP pulls together four of their best originals and each one brims with old school brilliance. 'Big Booya' opens at blistering speed, with wild spin backs and diva vocal cries. Review: Bristol producer Arcane makes a monumental debut on Over/Shadow here with four tracks that have Brady caused plenty of carnage on global dancefloors. 'Minotaur' kicks off with a flurry of snares that are so snappy they will break your neck. 'Execute' is another dense packed rhythmic workout with blasts of horn, dark bass and drilling drum work while 'Warriah' then floats above then dancelfoor with its paranoid pads and stepping broken beat rhythms. This most high impact and physical of EPs shuts down with 'Spirit Chaser', a more pad laced cut but one that is no less driving.

Review: Heads will know 'As We Enter' as the name of the Breakage tune that set the stage for many more things halftime to come - not to mention a Damian Marley & Nas song released around the same time - so we're more than pleased to learn that one next-gen producer has taken on the name as an alias. However, something in the aura of this release tells us this artist is no debutante; 'Lover To Lover' brings wubbing Reesebound rollage and summery fluting funk together in quick step, with complementary numbers 'So Gone', 'Come Again' and 'Shifting Gears' flaunting a respect for the many different facets of drum & bass, from techstep to early jump-up. This one gets more and more sinister as it progresses; despite the cover, whatever's entered the room feels more elephant than pigeon.

Review: Buckle up for this one because Aphrodite Recordings serves up four stone-wall jungle classics from the eponymous Aphrodite. First up is 'Style From The Darkside' with its crunchy drums and darkened bass powering onwards. 'Navigator' is then a silky trip with a flurry of snares and some heavenly melodies helloing up top while dirty bass does its thing down low. On the reverse is the face-melting and unrelenting 'Bomber' which will rattle ribs and walls and last of all 'Basslights' comes on strong with stepping rhythms and elastic bass.

Review: The Okbron label is at the heart of the modern drum & bass landscape and puts out a steady stream of high quality music to keep itself there. This latest drop from Axis is sweet one that will sound all the better in summer. Opener 'Ill Mansion Jazz' is as silky as they come, with plunging bass, shimmering synths and melancholic chords over dusty high speed breaks. On the flipside is the jazzy late night vibe of 'Barumba Nights' with its double bass and mysterious sax leads. Super classy stuff.

Review: Adiel's Danza Tribale adventures continue apace as she delivers the fourteenth release on her label. As well as exploring immersive, non-standard rhythms in her well-established style, the Italian artist is also folding some more emotive, trance and pop-informed elements into her sound. 'Nulla Resta' has a bombastic, main stage festival quality to its composition, while 'Sospesa' edges some brooding songwriting qualities into an intricate, elegant d&b-styled production. 'Parole' switches things up with a lighter mood led by organic instrumentation and plucked string leads and 'Notturna' closes the EP out with yet more epic production that confirms the techno stalwart heading into fresh pastures away from the strictures of pure club music.

Review: Samurai sign out of 2023 with this stunning expedition from longstanding craftsman ASC. One of the deepest to do it, here on 'House Of Leaves' he whips up a beguiling sense of atmosphere as we gradually ramp up the intensity from the tense and stretched out title track opener to the savage cymbal slaps of the finale 'Exploration #4'. In between we find our souls soothed by the relentless drumfunk of 'The Navidson Record' and our brains shattered by the cosmic turbo zaps of 'The 5 1/2 Minute Hallway'. Far out.
