Review: Calibre has always displayed an affinity for sounds beyond the confines of drum & bass, but he's never gone as far out as he does on his latest album, "Planet Hearth". Leaving the club behind altogether, he's brought piano-led composition front and centre, folded in an ample dose of ambient and struck upon a cosy Autumnal mood that feels perfect for the time of year. There are still beats to be heard here and there, but this is a personal expression first and foremost. There's a catchy pop tint to "Eratik" while the title track is more concerned with minimalist composition and cathedral reverbs - that's the kind of range he's exploring on this accomplished departure from his usual comfort zone.

  14. Pamoja Forever
Review: Since signing to Hospital in 2018, Degs has been on a quick train to the top. This long-awaited debut album is likely to increase the hype surrounding him. It's a hugely vibrant affair in which he adds his own vocals to tracks he wrote and produced, sometimes in collaboration with an all-star cast of guest artists (think S.P.Y, Logistics, Unglued and LSB for starters). There's much to enjoy throughout the hot-stepping, soul-fired set, with highlights including the fizzing D&B soul of opener "Driving Under Lights", the downtempo beauty of "4 Days", the soaring brilliance of "Colour My Soul", the floor-friendly hustle of previous single (and Adamski/Seal cover) "Killer", and the synth-sporting punchiness of closing cut "Pamoja Forever".

  14. The Warning
Review: On his first album since parting company with Hospital Records, Lincoln Barrett has decided to do things differently. Inspired by a mixture of co-producing Underworld's last album and nostalgia for the music of his youth, Night Gallery sees him expand his musical repertoire in impressive style. So, while his famed melody-rich, festival-friendly drum and bass workouts are still present, they're accompanied by tracks that variously touch on Daft Punk style disco ("The Beat Don't Feel The Same"), punk-rock ("Shotgun Mouthwash"), string-laden progressive house ("Ambient Recovery"), Balearic-minded breakbeat-pop ("Save Somebody") and euphoric indie-rock ("Come Together"). It's a bold move, but one that should be applauded; after all, the album hangs together just as well as any of his previous sets.

Review: Since releasing his debut single in 1994, Tom Withers AKA Klute has been one of the most prolific and reliable artists in drum and bass, releasing well over half a century of single releases in the process. "Whatever It Takes" is his ninth LP in total and lands 21 years after his first. There's much to enjoy throughout, with the Ipswich-based artist giddily skipping between elastic, funk-fuelled workouts, soaring liquid anthems, marginally darker and moodier fare, acid-fired rollers and, as the album progresses, tech-house and techno-influenced four-to-the-floor cuts. Throw in a handful of melodious, IDM-flecked downtempo numbers and you have an ear-pleasing set of expertly produced electronic gems.

Review: Makato is often cited as one of the pioneering founders of Japan's drum & bass scene. He's now up to his sixth studio album and it finds his airy, rolling, sweet flowing beats all present and correct. "Tomodachi Sessions" derived from a series of collaborations with close friends who have all played a part in his 25 year career. DJ Marky, S.P.Y, Bop and MC Conrad all feature and lend their own personalities to an album that offers celebratory hands in the air tracks like "Shine On Through" next to more late night dancers like "Transparent" and melodic explorations like "Show Me How You Feel".

Review: Since gate crashing the drum and bass party back in 2009, Mefjus (AKA Austrian producer Martin Schober) has consistently delivered high quality material for a range of labels, most notably Critical Recordings. This time out he's operating on Vision Recordings, offering up a second album, some four years on from releasing his well-received debut full-length. After opening with the foreboding, scene-setting cyber-ambient of "Manifest", the long-serving DJ/prodiucer proceeds to lay down a rip-snorting selection of peak-time D&B cuts marked out by dark and throbbing neruofunk style wobble basslines, clandestine textures, creepy orchestration and punchy, occasionally rolling breakbeats that occasionally tend towards the old school. There are also occasional blasts of experimental D&B - see "Ringshifter" and the stabbing "Work It" - and hard-to-define bass music fusions containing notably weighty low-end motifs.

Review: Metrik has long been one of Hospital Records' most intriguing artists - a producer whose weighty, punchy and futuristic take on drum and bass draws on a wider palette of influences (think Depeche Mode, Bjork, synth-wave, the Prodigy, film soundtracks and so on) than many of his contemporaries. These varied influences have inspired his work for some time, though rarely quite as obviously as on new album "Ex Machina", his third LP. Bold, heavily electronic and undeniably rugged, the set includes a range of instrumentals and vocal tracks rich in sparkling synth sounds, aggressive riffs, booming basslines and, of course, bustling D&B rhythms. Highlights include "Closer", the trance-influenced "We Are The Energy", the dreamy ambient flex of "Ascension" and the simmering, string-laden beauty of "Shadows".

Review: Given that Misanthrop has been active in the experimental D&B scene since the dawn of the millennium, it's rather surprising to find that Misanthrop is his debut solo album. Built around distorted electronics, industrial tropes, throbbing basslines and redlined rhythms, it's exactly the kind of set you'd expect from the Stuttgart native. Highlights come thick and fast, from the creepy, new wave and Kraftwerk influenced shuffle of "Notbot" and off-kilter, IDM madness of "The Funk" - like Autechre jamming with dBridge - to the unbridled aggression of "Rosebud" and atmospheric, string-drenched builds and throbbing electro-jungle rhythms of closer "Heavy Load".

Review: It may have appeared too late in the year to make any "best of 2019" lists, but Murdock's debut album is as vibrant, colourful and kaleidoscopic as any drum & bass set we've heard this year. He sets the tone with the rushing, celebratory soulfulness of the title track, before giddily skipping through radio-ready D&B-pop anthems ("Let It Go"), wobble bass-propelled sing-alongs ("Holding On"), rumbling instrumentals (Roni Size hook-up "Double Dutch"), off-kilter experimentalism (the eight-bit synths and post-dubstep beats of "Panic Attack"), moody hip-hop ("Dark Cloud", featuring Dynamite MC) and razor-sharp neuro-funk (bonus cut "Alien").

Review: Hospitality is one of the longest running drum & bass labels in the game. When they throw a house party, you want to be there. An so it proves with this new mixed CD from the London behemoth. It is Nu Tone who steps up to make the selections, and he does a stylish job of sequencing them into a right old rave up that will get you dancing on the spot, wherever you hear it. All the big names feature from SPY to Polaris, Kings of the Rollers to My Nu Leng, meaning the stylist variation is fresh and you stay locked throughout.

Review: Lo and behold, it's Phace's third solo album and it's sounding like his best LP to date. Powerfully punchy and high impact as it's compacted into a 30 minute hurricane, each cut is a glitchy zip from trip to trip; the wily vocal drop outs on "Downgrade", the sweary speaker kicking "FMS", the wonderfully whimsical "Lazy Day" and the near cosmic synths, gurgling bass and fizzy slapbass on "Obscure" are just some of the highlights that ping and ricochet you around Phace's multi layered, multi faceted, multi dimensional album. Breath takingly accomplished.

Review: Rudimental's third full-length, "Toast To Our Differences", was originally slated for release back in September, but ended up being delayed. So was it worth the wait? It's certainly a colourful, vibrant and expansive affair, with the quartet drawing on a far wider palette of influences than were evident on their previous albums. Check, for example, the title track's glistening, South African style tropical pop, the piano-powered cheeriness of "These Days", the soaring power pop of previous single "Sun Comes Up" and the auto-tune heavy EDM-house stomp of "Scared of Love". Given their superstar status, it's unsurprising to see an impressive cast list of guests and collaborators - Major Lazer, Rita Ora and Ladysmith Black Mambazo included - while this "Deluxe Edition" includes a trio of extra tracks.

Here, the label makes it to the CD format for the first time, with Impish gathering together an impressively entertaining blend of eyes-closed liquid D&B goodness, half-step rollers and tech-tinged dancefloor jams. With contributions coming from label favourites and newcomers, there's plenty to enjoy, from the piano-and-jazz guitar-laden shuffle of Malaky, Skeletone and Satl's "Future Blues", and the warped bass and hazy, Arabic horns of Agbo's "The Maturity", to the immaculate D&B jazz of Soligen and Type 2's "The Plan".

Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

Review: 14 years after he launched the label via a collaborative 12" with pal Lomax, BCee's Spearhead Records has finally notched up a century of releases. To celebrate, the veteran producer/label owner has gathered together a killer selection of previously unheard cuts. There's plenty of gems to be found within the 24-track selection, with highlights including the dub-wise D&B skank of Bungle's "Northern Dub", the elongated sub tones, jazzy breaks and dreamy melodiousness of Redeyes' "Outlines", the angular bass-weight and sunshine shuffle of John B's "If U Need Anything" and the drowsy deep jungle revivalism of Technimatic and LSB's "Sight Lines". As you'd expect, there are some great contributions from BCee dotted throughout, including a sublime personal "re-fix" of his own "Back To The Streets".

Review: Since debuting the Voodoom project in 2015, Bong-Ra, Deformer and regular vocalist Scapu Lox have developed a niche as drum & bass culture's foremost purveyors of junglist horror-core. As you'd expect, they've continued to explore this niche on second album "Sacrificial Artefacts", a probably dark, creepy, weighty and full-throttle excursion full to bursting with wild, sharply edited drum breaks, clandestine electronic sounds, twitching breakcore style edits, horror organs and growling, manipulated vocals. Throw in a few fizzing rave riffs, booming basslines and occasional nods towards jungle's ragga-centric roots and you've got a set that bristles with giddy, wide-eyed and occasionally maniacal intent.
