Disco Pregnancy
Cat: DEEWEE 037. Rel: 05 Mar 20
  1. Disco Pregnancy (Tonal & Rhythmical) (5:28)
  2. Home (Tonal & Rhythmical) (3:16)
Review: London based Brazilian artist Laima is back after her Home album with two new version of tracks form it. They have been mixed and engineered by the Soulwax brothers and feature the combined Tonal + Rhythmical versions of 'Disco Pregnancy' and 'Home'. Each one is a creepy and alluring affair with Laima's vocal and synth tracks on the 'Tonal' disc alongside Iggor's beats on the 'Rhythmical' record both designed to be played at the same time for full effect. It's wonderfully weird and straddles a dark disco, wave, EBM line that is utterly compelling.

  1. Bless The Rains
  2. My Body's On Fire
  3. Not In Love Anymore
Review: If you want hugs on the dancefloor deep into the night, Late Night Tough Guy's (formally DJ HMC) "Bless The Rains" is the perfect drug. The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. Skirting around the throbbing bassline and triangle hits of "My Body On Fire" is a vocal that will have some train-spotters pulling their hair out in frustration, while "Not In Love Anymore" will have both Warren G/Nate Dogg and Michael McDonald fans bumping and grinding to excess.

Love Theme From Spartacus
Love Theme From Spartacus (7") (1 per customer)

Cat: NW 6. Rel: 26 Nov 20
  1. Yusef Lateef - "Love Theme From Spartacus" (2:57)
  2. Cannonball Adderley Sextet - "Brother John" (2:24)
Review: This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.

Los Alamos Motel
Cat: PPU 059. Rel: 03 Apr 14
  1. Puzzles In Life
  2. Videophone To Space
  3. Cruise Till The Sun Shines
  4. Los Alamos Motel
Review: If you've ever got a few hours to spare, check out Legowelt's discography - the Dutch analogue fetishist is astonishingly productive (and, of course Legowelt is simply one of Danny Wolfers' many pseudonyms). Here, he adds another label to the growing list with a surprise appearance on Andrew Morgan's Washington D.C-based Peoples Potential Unlimited imprint. Unsurprisingly, Wolfers explores many of his favourite themes on Puzzles in Life, merrily skipping between melodic, bubbling deep house (the excellent title track), slo-mo Detroit futurism ("Video Phone To Space"), super-slo stargazing boogie (the superb "Cruise Till The Sun Shines") and woozy, intergalactic ambience ("Los Alamos Motel"). In many ways, this is an unusual turn from PPU, but it's a calculated gamble that's more than paid off.

Review: More balearic goodness from Melbourne's Len Leise on his General Purpose imprint. The International Feel affiliated producer delivers sun-kissed island dream aesthetics, by way of celestial FM synth tones and neon-lit analogue synths on these three wonderful offerings. From the hypnotic bounce of "TFTC", the tropical polrhythmic bliss of "MITD" or the tunnelling "STTS" calling to mind George Thompson's Karamika project on ESP Institute.

Review: The new soft-spoken, hard-rocking group from Baltimore debuted their full length live show at the Wolf + Lamb Marcy Hotel this March. Following in the footsteps of greats like Nicolas Jaar and PillowTalk, they were the first invited guest in over 2 years to perform at the legendary Brooklyn proving grounds. Life on Planets is a duo that met in the studio lofts of their east coast hometown, whereby a collaboration fusing indie artrock and electronic music began to take shape. It was a pairing of two dramatically different personas, merging as one for a serendipitous, romantic sound that's now been signed to the Double Standard label. Life on Planets has also released music through Better on Foot, where the debut single 'Apollo' made waves in early 2014. The touring act features live vocals and guitar, backed by a dj/producer, dawning a long-awaited return to authentic songwriting in dance music.

Kirkstall Delight EP

  1. Mountain Walk (7:07)
  2. Eskase (7:28)
  3. Travel (6:01)
  4. Eastern Dish (4:00)
Review: Beyond Paradise's latest release comes courtesy of fellow Leeds resident Mark Crossley, a psychedelia-loving musician and producer who now records as The Local Beatnik. As you'd perhaps expect, there's a suitably hallucinatory feel to much of the music on the "Kirkstall Delight EP". Check first the Plantlife-do-mushrooms flex of opener "Mountain Walk", where Crossley's effects-laden vocals rise above sparse, loose-limbed drums, squelchy synth bass and meandering synthesizer lines - before acquainting yourself with the Turkish psych-funk and kosmiche influenced shuffle of "Eskase". Crossley reaches for the Sitars, tablas and slo-mo beats on "Travel", while "Eastern Dish" is a non-stop hum of backwards guitars, Ravi Shankar-esque sitars, dense beats and a sharp dancefloor sensibility.

  3. Second Sight (5:31)
  4. Belong To Be Here (4:30)
  5. Exp + Mem (3:26)
Review: The Spanish guitar has a long history of use in sunkissed dance music, the sort of tracks that never fail to perfectly soundtrack the poolside recovery to the night before or early evening sunset session. 'Mouth Feel' is the first proof this EP gives us that the formula still works, a rolling slow house number that's all warm vibes and good drinks.

From thereon in the evidence only mounts. 'Deep Sea Burn' takes almost any reference to dance music per se out of the equation, owing much more to the meditative ambient tradition before emerging into the light deep electronica of 'Second Sight'. Things are rounded out nicely with 'Belong To Be Here', a pared back, rhythmic slice of minimal, percussive electro and the cinematic moods of 'Exp+Mem'.

Review: For Record Store Day 2017 Razor-N-Tape presents "Icarus", a slice of chilled out analogue soul by Lovebirds aka Sebastian Doering with remixes. The original is a deep soul jam reminiscent of Roy Ayers' Ramp project, while the Tall Black Guy's remix gets more of an R&B swagger on in style. We particularly enjoyed JKriv's lush little boogie down rendition, which really hit that sweet spot in all its neon lit glory. Each mix gets its own side in this double 7" pack, with stunning full color artwork, making it a truly special package perfect for both

Stollwerck Single
  1. Phantom Band/Linear Johnson & The Protons - "Rush Rush"
  2. Drums Off Chaos - "Drums Off Chaos"
Review: The sadly departed Jaki Liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. Best known for his work in Can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and Emotional Rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-Can period living in Stollwerck. On the A side of this 7" curio is the sound of Phantom Band with Linear Johnson & The Protons. "Rush Rush" has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still Liebezeit's drumming stands out. The B side "Drums Off Chaos" need little explanation - it's the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

It marks the cultured label's 50th release and precedes a special compilation of overlooked favourites, classics and unreleased material. This one is well worth your attention though, beforehand. Phenomenal Handclap Band founder Quinn Luke with his longtime pal Alexis Georgopoulos combine as Q&A for the first two tracks, with Lex providing the third and fourth, all proving to be seductive, slow motion Balearic groovers for grown up movers. Q&A's 'Pulse' is a future groove, Lex's 'Max Pen' is a cheery number with lush squelchy bass and skyward chords, while the latter's closing offering 'GP Score' brings a little more energy.

Review: When Marie Davidson announced last year that she would be, "retiring from club music", many wondered what she'd do next. Renegade Breakdown, her first album recorded with a full band (L'Oeil Nu), answers that question. It sees the Canadian artist and her new collaborators deliver suitably arresting, personal and ear-catching songs built on mixing and matching a surprisingly wide variety of musical inspirations, from Blondie, classic disco and mutilated heavy metal guitars, to Kraftwerk, Billie Holiday, Fleetwood Mac and Daft Punk. It's a big shift for the previously highly experimental artist, but thanks to her skill as both a a producer and performer, one that works magnificently well.

This time round the former teenage prodigy has written and produced pretty much everything on the album, delivering a suite of songs that effortlessly blur the boundaries between glacial electronica, off-kilter synth-pop, R&B and folktronica. There are some moments of real beauty scattered throughout - see the rather fine "Leeds Liverpool Canal" for starters - while the way her distinctive vocals are matched by inventive and enjoyable musical arrangements is mighty impressive. Sure, there's nothing as rush inducing as club hit "Operator", but what's here is every bit as alluring.

Review: Given that Alex Storrer released his first Lexx record way back in 2001, this album is way overdue. It's Storrer's first as Lexx following an abstract 2002 ambient set as Lexxodus. "Cosmic Shift" is as warm, groovy, Balearic and beguiling as you'd expect with Storrer joining the dots between yacht rock, dub, deep house, ambient, folk, new age and lazy Latin grooves. Interestingly, Storrer successfully takes to the mic on numerous occasions, while guests including Woolfy, Ella Thompson and Harriet Brown also lend a hand. The results are uniformly superb, which begs the question: why didn't he do it sooner? Let's hope it won't be 20 years before we get a sequel.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Swedish combo Little Dragon. Aside from a few remix singles, they've not released anything of note since acclaimed 2014 full-length Nabuma Rubberband. While that set was apparently something of a struggle to complete, Season High - their fifth album in total - feels spontaneous and life affirming. With James Ford handling production duties, the album offers a gleeful romp through hook-laden, high quality synth pop with nods to the likes of Prince, Pet Shop Boys and Janet Jackson along the way. Of course, there are a few chunks of skewed electronica thrown in to mix things up, but these are nowhere near as thrilling as their unashamed pop works.

Review: Music From Memory is a new label founded by Redlight Records duo Tako Reyenga and Abel Nagenast and fellow Amsterdam dweller Jamie Tiller and arrives with the mission statement "Giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance." Whilst there are plenty of labels going down the reissue path with varying degrees of musical integrity, its clear this trio have the best intentions at heart and their debut releases sets the bar truly high. The ocean loving Rhode Island based keyboardist and singer song writer Leon Lowman self released a series of albums in the early 80s dedicated to his hometown and the various women he tried to woo during this period. Executed as lo-fi beach funk and lazy synth jams in a manner that sounds way ahead of it's time, Lowman's work never received the wider acclaim it truly deserves and these albums have become highly sought after curios (check the Discogs listings for his debut LP Syntheseas) Material from both his 1980s albums features on Liquid Diamonds along with unreleased material that Lowman recorded at the time and this 12 track collection is likely to prove very popular with the musical historians out there!
