In detail:

Front cover: Gang Starr

Released as one of the last shots of true NYC underground before the oncoming wave of hip-hop commercialism, Hard to Earn was an artistic rebirth that came as Gang Starr was cresting, an intense batch of fresh material that felt like a deliberate growth spurt. "Moment of Truth is probably our most important album," says DJ Premier, "but Hard to Earn is my favorite Gang Starr album."

Back cover: LaBelle

As the 1960s faded away and the '70s shattered the veneer of innocence, three talented singers - Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash - shed their BlueBelles name, swapped their floor-length dresses in favor of denim, and reinvented themselves as a gritty soul trio. Over the course of six albums in six years, Labelle continued to grow, transforming into fierce and funky pop stars in wild costumes, and ultimately ascended to ubiquity with their Allen Toussaint-produced megahit "Lady Marmalade."

Wax Poetics presents the third issue since the 2021 relaunch with another heavyweight 148-page journal packed full of timeless music stories, record spreads, archival photography, and original artwork
Notes: Wax Poetics presents the third issue since the 2021 relaunch with another heavyweight 148-page journal packed full of timeless music stories, record spreads, archival photography, and original artwork. Each issue now also comes individually stamped.

Continuing with the trademark double cover, the front is graced with Patrice Rushen, an accomplished jazz keyboardist who found her singing voice and embraced her love of R&B, becoming a bona fide star with the release of 1982's Straight from the Heart, an album that featured the smash hit "Forget Me Nots". The other cover story dives into the history of Detroit techno, from the primordial electronics of Juan Atkins and the sonic upheaval of "Mad" Mike Banks's Underground Resistance to Waajeed (featured on the back cover), whose Underground Music Academy aims to help the next generation of Detroit artists.

You'll also find pieces on jazz organist Shirley Scott; the psychedelic soul group the Chambers Brothers; hip-hop icon Masta Ace; Jamaica's musical incubator the Alpha Boys School; the Bill Evans Trio's famous Village Vanguard recordings; trombonist Joseph Bowie's trek from avant-garde jazz to NYC downtown funk; the history of Mo' Wax Records; Brazilian singer-songwriter Joyce; London sax player Chelsea Carmichael; and nu-R&B multi-hyphenate KeiyaA.
