0.01s: The First 1/100th Second Of 1 Bit Symphony
Cat: 557838 Rel: 22 Jan 15

Book capturing the inner workings of Tristan Perich's "1 Bit Symphony" - including written explanations, calculations and diagrams
Notes: 0.01s, Perich's new companion to 1-Bit Symphony, is a synthesis of art and computation in book form, giving a tangible mass to the code behinds its music.

Digging even deeper into the basic operations of computation, 0.01s captures the inner workings of 1-Bit Symphony over the first hundredth of a second after it is switched on. In just 0.01 seconds, its processor executes 80,000 computational cycles, enough information to fill a 695-page book with austere tables of numbers and machine language, becoming a visual meditation on the internal mechanics of computation.

Limited edition 200 page hardback book containing front & back covers for Robert Pollard's 100 studio albums
Notes: On April 7th 2017, Guided by Voices released August By Cake, a double album. For anyone who knows the band this isn't necessarily a newsworthy event. The band and its leader are extremely prolific and release multiple albums every year. What made this one special, what made it historic, was that it marked the 100th studio album release for Robert Pollard.

It is arguable as to whether any other artist has released that much music. What we know for sure is that no other artist has released 100 studio albums with every one of them on vinyl.

This book contains the front and back covers for all 100 albums. Less a testament to Pollard's extensive career and more a study in album art, the book is a large format (12" x 12") hard cover document containing over 200 pages printed to the edge.

Limited to 1000 copies worldwide.

100 Club Stories
100 Club Stories (hardback book)
Cat: 708288 Rel: 18 Mar 19

162 page book documenting the 75-year history of one of the UK's most iconic music venues - edition of 1000
Notes: In celebration of the legendary 100 Club, a venue with as much character as the bands booked to play there, Ditto are publishing a book of anecdotal stories from its 75-year history. From the musicians who have played there through to the bar staff and the customers they served, each unique story adds to the legend and myth.

The 100 Club, launched in 1942 as the Feldman Swing Club, was frequented by GIs during the war, and by the stars of British and global jazz in the 1950s, including BB King and Muddy Waters. But it was in the 1970s that it became an iconic venue for the punk scene, hosting "the 100 Club Punk Special", an event which included the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, Buzzcocks and The Damned. The event cemented punk as an idea and subculture.

It wasn't just incredible bands that emerged from this independent venue, but tribes of fans devoted to new ways of thinking. "100 Club Stories" will be published in spring, with various digital activations and events throughout the 75th anniversary year which runs until September 2018. The book will feature stories from everyone from club punters to internationally famous musicians, alongside archive imagery, much of it completely unseen prior to now.

Case bound with a screen printed cover, coloured papers and special inks, a truly fitting artefact for one of the UK's most beloved institutions.

162 pages, 29 x 21cm, hard cover.

1000 Record Covers (hardback book)
Cat: 661777 Rel: 01 Jan 90

Hardback book with 1000 of the best record covers from the 1960s to 1990s
Notes: Record covers are a sign of our life and times. Like the music on the discs, they address such issues as love, life, death, fashion, and rebellion. For music fans the covers are the expression of a period, of a particular time in their lives. Many are works of art and have become as famous as the music they stand for Andy Warhol's covers, for example, including the banana he designed for The Velvet Underground.

This edition of "Record Covers" presents a selection of the best rock album covers of the 60s to 90s from music archivist, disc jockey, journalist, and former record-publicity executive Michael Ochs' enormous private collection. Both a trip down memory lane and a study in the evolution of cover art, this is a sweeping look at an underappreciated art form.

1987-1990: Sold Out Hardcore Punk Indie Fanzine Anthology by Sold Out
Cat: 946505

54-page time-capsule volume featuring over 50 bands including Fugazi, Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Dag Nasty, Agnostic Front, 7 Seconds, Uniform Choice, Corrosion Of Conformity and more
Notes: Long before he made the documentary "Dope, Hookers And Pavement" about the early days of the Detroit hardcore punk scene, Otto Buj published Sold Out Fanzine from 1987 through 1990 with the help of his pals Trent, Stefan, Mikey, and Andy. It was arguably one of the smarter, more irreverent, and ambitious fanzines to come out of the whole mid-late '80s hardcore-punk-indie scene, with a focus on insightful, long-form interviews with some of the major players at the time (Henry, Ian, HR, Harley, Brannon, Pushead, Choke, etc.). Now all ten issues have been bound into a fat, 354-page time-capsule volume featuring over 50 bands including Fugazi, Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Dag Nasty, Agnostic Front, 7 Seconds, Uniform Choice, Corrosion Of Conformity, Killing Time, Leeway, and a ton of everything else, including awesome, high-quality prints of the five, original poster pinups that appeared in issues #6-10. 24 Hour Party People: What The Sleeve Notes Never Tell You
Cat: 535401 Rel: 17 Jun 14

Paperback part fiction, part reality story of Factory Records founder Anthony Wilson
Notes: ''The musicians own everything. The company owns nothing. All our bands have the freedom to f**k off''

Written in blood, The Factory non-contract set out the manifesto for one of the most influential and progressive record labels of our time...

24 Hour Party People: What The Sleeve Notes Never Tell You is the bizarre and not entirely fabricated story of Factory founder Anthony Wilson. Part fiction, part reality, comic and tragic by turns, Wilson tells his own unique story in his own unique way for the very first time.

Manchester, 1976: Anthony Wilson, Granada TV presenter, is at an early Sex Pistols gig. Inspired by this pivotal moment in music history, he and his friends set up Factory Records. They go on to conquer the world with Joy Division (who become New Order) then again with the Happy Mondays.

Riding high on their success and just about keeping the business afloat, the Factory directors decide to give something back to their city, to open a club - The Hacienda. Packed on opening night but losing money hand over fist for the first five years, The Hacienda and the Happy Mondays take their unique brand of hedonism to breaking point.

From the dawn of punk to the death of acid house, Anthony Wilson was at the centre of it all. Love him or hate him, you can't possibly ignore him.

50 Rappers Who Changed The World: A Celebration Of Rap Legends
Cat: 863929 Rel: 01 Jan 90

112 page hardcover book
Notes: Arguably one of the most mainstream music styles today, rap was in fact born centuries ago in West Africa with historians or 'griots' who used to tell stories of the past over the beat of a drum. But it wasn't until the 1970s in New York that rapping as we know it was born and began to flourish.

50 Rappers Who Changed the World profiles some of the genre's biggest influencers, from the 1970s until the present day. From groundbreaking groups like Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five and The Sugarhill Gang in the 70s, to Run-DMC and Public Enemy in the 80s, Biggie, Tupac and Snoop in the 90s, and Eminem and Jay-Z in the 00s, this is a history of music for anyone who loves rap. Featuring MCs like West Coast legends including N.W.A. and Ice-T, and countless women who changed the game, like Salt-n-Pepa, MC Lyte and Missy Elliott. And today, we have a new breed of artists who are dominating the charts, from Kendrick Lamar to Drake and Cardi B.

Filled with a stylish illustrations and short biography of each artist, this book is a celebration of the musicians who shaped the genre and changed the world.

79: The Ska Revival Dance Craze: Essays From The Frontline by Gary Bushell
Cat: 946503 Rel: 10 Aug 23

'79 ska revival book by Gary Bushell; 300 pages for fans of Madness, The Selecter, The Specials & The Bodysnatchers
Notes: 300pp, Black & White illustrations.

It's forty years since the Specials took the pop world by storm with their infectious mix of Ska rhythms and punk attitude. Madness and The Selector followed close on their heels. Within a matter of months the 2-Tone bands had stolen our hearts and conquered the charts with a non-stop procession of unforgettable hits: 'Gangsters', 'A message to you Rudi', 'Too Much too Young', 'The Prince', 'One Step Beyond', 'My Girl', 'Too Much Pressure'...

"Your last chance to dance before World War Three," Specials singer Terry Hall called it. An exaggeration of course, but 2-Tone served up the most perfect pop since Trojan reggae dominated the UK charts a decade earlier. And the bands kept coming - Bad Manners, The Beat, The Bodysnatchers. Even Judge Dread came back! Garry Bushell was the first rock writer to see the Specials live, the first to interview Madness and the first to watch the bands attempt to export their magic to the USA. This book is his collected dispatches from the front line during that exciting, exhilarating rise of the rude boys.

The Ska, Rock & Mod revival of the late Seventies early Eighties put life and laughs into a politIcally grim UK scene. Journalist Garry Bushell was on the front line, working for Sounds and Dance Craze magazine, and was present to witness all of the critical events.

90 Degrees Of Shade: Image & Identity In The West Indies: Over 100 Years Of Photography In The Caribbean
Cat: 551691 Rel: 06 Nov 14

252 page hardback book celbrating over 100 years of photography in the Caribbean
Notes: This book celebrates over 100 years of photography in the Caribbean. From calypso kings to Vodou priests, revolutionaries to dictators, colonialism to independence, slave trade to tourist paradise - the many uses and abuses of the Caribbean are vividly captured here.

The image of the Caribbean is as much a creation of the outsider as it is the complex identity of its people, a melting pot of races created out of the participants of the 400 year slave trade - enforced Africans, indigenous Caribbeans and their colonisers - French, Spanish, Dutch, English.

From luscious and beautiful backdrop of tourism and hedonist retreat, to colonial outpost and revolutionary threat within North America's backyard, the complex identity of the Caribbean stands at the intersection of tourism, the detritus of the slave trade, the decline of colonialism and the region's tropicality.

The regions politics span an almost constantly changing path of ideas, radicalism and revolutionaries - from Castro's Cuba and Michael Manley's Jamaica, to the violent right-wing dictatorships of Haiti's Francois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier and the Dominican Republic's Rafael Trujillo.

The hundreds of fascinating and unique photographs featured here illustrate more than one hundred years of Caribbean history, culture and industry as well as the subsequent diaspora of its people to America, England, Canada and elsewhere.

Introduction by Paul Gilroy. Edited by Stuart Baker.

Paul Gilroy is the author of There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack: The Cultural Politics of Race and Nation (1987), The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness (1993), Black Britain - A Photographic History (2004) amongst others.

Stuart Baker is the editor of a number of photography and design books all of which deal with culture and identity including Punk 45 (with Jon Savage), Dancehall (with Beth Lesser), Kanaval: Vodou, Politics and Revolution on the Streets of Haiti (with Leah Gordon), Voguing (with Chantal Regnault), Bossa Nova, Freedom, Rhythm & Sound (both with Gilles Peterson) and more. A Book Of Kito by Kito Jempere
Cat: 981442

Kito Jempere’s genre-unbound, faux-literary debut in publishing
Notes: A book as a milestone, here comes Kito Jempere's genre-unbound, faux-literary debut in publishing. Born after taking a glimpse of some neat word-and-image opus through the window of an art gallery in Istanbul, and thinking 'I want to do that', the seed for 'A Book of Kito' was sowed, and for good. The unique trajectory that's led Kirill Sergeev to this place and time, 38 happy solar rotations reading on the counter, was definitely one that deserved to be told, but the fun way. From his modest beginnings in his home-city of Saint Petersburg, onto becoming a relatively hush-hush driving force of the international house underground with releases for the likes of Jimpster's Freerange Records, Emotional Response, Hell Yeah, Let's Play House, DFA, Bordello a Parigi et al, through busting the frontiers of live music with the crazy circuses of SPDSC and Kito Jempere Band, there's been very few moments of quiet in Kito's gleefully bumpy yet ever soul-fulfilling journey. An oddball and thrillingly witty object spanning the many facets of his intimate self and artistic persona, the win-some/lose-some nature of a DJ's life, as well as the pressure and release coming with exposing yourself to the limelight, but also the joys of being dubbed by your peers and unexpected spits in the face, 'A Book of Kito' is a thoroughly honest portray of a man telling his realities, hopes and anxieties, that huge, infectious smile slapped across the face as an indivisible trademark. A loud-spoken piece of anti-egotistic confession delivered in his own words, friendly and dynamic as his character, with enough humility to cool off the infinity pool of highfalutin leeches that regularly floods that thing called, "The Scene", Kito's anti-memoir has us surfing the good waves and channeling the positive vibes, as it washes the pains and disillusions away in constantly joyful fashion. Stacking as much energy as possible from these countless stories and fun-riddled anecdotes about life and music, fueled by the figures that keep him - and us all - ticking - best half, proud son, loyal friends, Kito Jempere serves up a lighthearted delight of a volume, tender and piquant as it gets. Keeping it fast, so doubt doesn't catch up.

A Common Misunderstanding Of The Speed Of Light
Cat: 904819 Rel: 17 Nov 22

Features photographs and texts taken from Charbel Haber's personal digital diary spanning from 2020 to the start of 2022.
Notes: These are the first and last sentences from Charbel Haber's latest offering, A Common Misunderstanding of the Speed of Light: a multi-media musing on the chronic and the chronological, the subversive nature of time. This combination of a record and book observes the slow passing of life and the illusion of retrogradation in his every day. Simply by documenting - via image, text and tune - Haber assigns value to everything that is cast in amber by this project. There's an acceptance and appreciation of the destitution he witnesses, it is an homage given in overlapping forms.

ACMOTSOL has two parts. The book, paperback in an embossed orange, features photographs and texts taken from Haber's personal digital diary spanning from 2020 to the start of 2022. Broken into six chapters - named for the six tracks on the record - the entries are an artist's log of sorts during a peculiar period of global hyper stagnation and navigating the aftermath of the Beirut explosions. The 96 pages highlight Haber's interest in decay, negative space and the temporality of the human condition. Instead of presenting the images and texts as they were originally paired online, they're reordered and recontextualized in the book. New connections are formed, as tenuous and fleeting as the content they surround. The images interrupt the texts in many instances, forcing pauses and inviting distraction.

At the centre of the book is a sudden burst of orange pages, with stylized pluckings of the text framing a QR-code that grants access to the record. With the brilliant orange covers and matching innards, pregnant with the music at the core, it's almost as if these central pages act as a way to turn the book inside out. There, the book's purpose is altered, fixated on a mirror image of itself. It forms a self-completing arc for the project, a loop.

ACMOTSO's second half is that mirrored album. Six tracks totalling just under 52 minutes. The music could be a continuation of his solo albums Of Palm Trees and Decompositions (2016) and It Ended Up Being a Good Day Mr. Allende (2012), an exploration into the expansiveness of seemingly simple loops of a lilting guitar. Careful electronic effects add dimensions or reground the listener. There's a swelling of sound, the illusion of the push of space before it retracts back into itself or fades into the distance. Much like the images and texts the music complements, the songs challenge the purity of cycles. Endings are beginnings, beginnings are endings or is everything just the middle? Haber is quietly and elegantly grappling with the troublesome act of place-making. In music, in words and in visual storytelling.

ACMOTSOL is a work that can be calming or disorienting, depending on what is requested of it. Similar to the way loops and cycles can signify both meditation and mania. The tendrils of Haber's past - his home of Beirut, fictional and real characters encountered, authors read, films watched, composers listened, walks taken - knit themselves together for a presentation of our immediate present. An evidence of a happening. A considered project of time.

All photographs, texts and music by Charbel Haber. Album mixed by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh. Design by Maziyar Pahlevan. Printed by Albe De Coker in Belgium.

This dual-part project will be released on November 11 2022 on 'Other People.'

A Field Guide To Post-Punk & New Wave
Cat: 854458

96-page hardback book
Notes: What makes New Wave... New Wave? It's the catchall name of punk's poppy offshoot, born in the 70s simultaneously in the United States and United Kingdom. But how would you describe New Wave's context in the zeitgeist of the time, or explain how this new electro-rock made people feel? Well, that's precisely what DJ and author Steve Wide explains in this handy book. In these pages, Steve explains the social and music industry climates of the 70s and 80s, unpacking the influence of the punk genre on NYC-based groups like the Velvet Underground and New York Dolls. There's also a timeline on the usage of the term New Wave - for a long chunk of the 70s it was used almost interchangeably with "punk". There are breakdowns on the key record labels, DJs, producers, engineers and magazines - all of which stitched their own layer on the New Wave patchwork. There are deep dives into controversies, rivalries and messy band breakups. And lastly, there's a dissection of how ripples of New Wave are still felt today, in recorded music and across wider pop culture. If you, or someone close to you, is obsessed with the minutiae of the New Wave movement, then this book is a must-have.

A Jockey Slut Tribute, by Andrew Weatherall
Cat: 800802 Rel: 09 Dec 20

Paperback book
Notes: Pre-order before 20 November 2020 Release date 10 December 2020 Andrew Weatherall was the acid house generation's most inspiring DJ and producer, renowned for his work on Primal Scream's epoch-defining 'Screamadelica' and his own bands Sabres Of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen. As a DJ he was peerless and unpredictable, helming club nights that played techno, rockabilly or music that "never knowingly exceeded 122 bpm."

Weatherall featured in seminal dance music magazine Jockey Slut many times during its lifetime. All his interviews from the publication are included within this tribute to The Guv'nor. Further articles cover the tenure of his professional life from the mid-80s to 2020. They include his beginnings at the influential Boy's Own fanzine, his DJ sets at landmark nights Shoom and Sabresonic, and the plethora of ventures he still had running including the Woodleigh Research Project, A Love From Outer Space and festival Convenanza.

Jockey Slut magazine ran from 1993 - 2004. The influential club culture publication was started by John Burgess and Paul Benney as a self published Manchester based fanzine. It became a monthly when it moved to London in 1999. Jockey Slut was notable for being more music-centric, left-field and irreverent than other dance music magazines. It also bagged some real exclusives during its tenure giving first ever interviews to The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and The Avalanches.

Included in the 160 page, perfect bound book edited by founding Jockey Slut editor John Burgess is:

- All Andrew Weatherall's Jockey Slut interviews collated (1993-2004) including Weatherall Gets His Tats Out, I'm A Classic Underachiever, Two Lone Swordsmen and An Audience With... and more.
- Further new features and classic articles from Luke Una, Richard Norris, Kris Needs, Joe Muggs, Jim Butler, Mandi James, Lee Brackstone and more.
- Brand new 10,000+ word oral history of Andrew Weatherall's early years from Shoom & Screamadelica to Sabres of Paradise featuring interviews with Bobby Gillespie, Ed Simons, Danny Rampling, Justin Robertson, Andrew Innes, David Holmes, Keith Tenniswood, Anna Haigh, Terry Farley and more.
- Retrospective of Andrew Weatherall's club nights Sabresonic, Bloodsugar, Double Gone Chapel, Wrong Meeting, A Love From Outer Space by John Burgess.
All proceeds from the book will go to the charities that were important to Andrew Weatherall: Amnesty International, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Thrombosis UK, Crisis.

A Sides: A Cosmology Of Audio Editions By Artists Around The Arc Lémanique Region by Laurent Schmid & Roxane Bovet
Cat: 784385 Rel: 07 Sep 20

An insight into the conditions and motivations that give rise to the creation of sound recordings as an art form.
Notes: Art & vinyl: an analytic anthology of artist's records in Switzerland.

Since the beginning of its existence, the record has always been used by visual artists as a form of distribution for their sound practice. First experimented with by the early avant-garde movements, the role of these sound supports was later redefined in the context of the proliferation and hybridization of forms between sound and language.
While recording media such as discs or cassettes were used to document happenings, readings, and Fluxus concerts, these media also became a medium in their own right, used by artists to transmit their experiments.

Moreover, the current economic and technological context generated a keen interest in editorial and multiple art practices.

A-sides brings into focus on a network of actors linked to the scene of the Lake Geneva region—on the history of artistic encounters and exchanges generating sound productions. The produced works, as well as the methods of exploration of this international network, formed the basis of this anthology of artists' sound publications.

A-sides gives an insight into the conditions and motivations that give rise to the creation of sound recordings as an art form and explores the ambiguity of the relationship between the current technological context, which is moving towards dematerialization, and the persistence of sound practices distributed on tangible recording media.

A Soft Hiss Of This World (by Tim Ingold, Carmen Pardo & Mikel R Nieto)
Cat: 765375 Rel: 11 Jun 20

paperback book
Notes: The research project "A soft hiss of this world" is focused on the loss in many aspects such as the loss of language as a result of the Anthropocene through the absence of certain states and processes that occur naturally in the environment like different states of water, snow and ice. In Finnish there are more than forty terms* to refer to them and because of the loss of these states in the landscape, the loss is also displaced to the language, in this case, the Finnish.

This research project took these words as a starting point to make hundreds of hours of recordings in the Finnish landscape. The sound of snow, ice and snowflakes are the reference and the sound material of this research project. And to obtain these sounds, as well as the possible sound differences between each snowflake, special and specific microphones were developed for this very specific and fragile recording process.
This book contains texts by three authors: Tim Ingold, Carmen Pardo and Mikel R. Nieto, on the research carried out by Nieto in Finland during 2016. The text by Tim Ingold opens the book and introduces the reader to the main subjects of the research: language, landscape, sound and listening. This text is easy to read and aims to immerse us in the Finnish landscape and in the listening act to its sounds and silences. Carmen Pardo's text unfolds first, the way in which the gaze and listening of the snow constitute the experience of a disappearance, of a concentration in the void or nothingness of which A Soft Hiss of this World participates.

The third text belongs to Mikel R. Nieto and is divided into four parts. The third part is a code that reflects the loss of most of the sound recordings made during his research with more than 600 hours of recordings. This code is the only thing that could be recovered from all recordings, except the only sound recording published in physical format as a transparent Flexi-disc.

The fourth part is the result of silencing each and every word by John Cage in his "Lecture on Nothing," leaving only the punctuation marks, such as commas, periods, separators and the last sentence of the text of Cage. Every time the transparent flexi-disc is played, the player needle wears away the vinyl and making the sound of the recording disappear. Therefore, each listening destroys the sound."

A thrilling account of life with Sun Ra's Arkestra and New York's avant-garde jazz scenes of the 1970s-90s.
Notes: A thrilling account of life with Sun Ra's Arkestra and New York's avant-garde jazz scenes of the 1970s-90s. In this memoir, Harlem-born trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah recounts decades of national and international touring with the Sun Ra Arkestra and charts the rise of the New York loft jazz scene, offering a fascinating portrait of advanced music in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan from the 1970s through the 1990s, including thrilling stories about the politically important Bed-Stuy venue The East and the author's tutelage under composer and long-time Archie Shepp collaborator Cal Massey. Along the way, Abdullah covers his spiritual development as a Buddhist, battles with addiction, tribulations as a father, lessons from Sun Ra and working life as an educator and cab driver. Trumpeter and educator Ahmed Abdullah was born in Harlem in 1947. An important figure in the New York loft jazz movement, in 1972 he formed a group called Abdullah, two years before joining the Sun Ra Arkestra, with whom he played for more than 20 years. A Time Before Crack

Notes: Best known as hip hop's finest fashion photographer for his blockbuster best-selling monograph, "Back In The Days" Shabazz revisited his archive and unearthed an exceptional collection of never-before-published documentary photographs collected for his 3rd Powerhouse Books release, "A Time Before Crack". A visual diary of the streets for NYC from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, Shabazz's distinctive photographs reveal the families, the poses, and the players who made this age extraordinary. Once upon "A Time Before Crack", inner-city communities were blighted by poverty and unemployment but not by the drug wars that tore families apart, destroying lives with needless violence and mindless addiction. Once upon "A Time Before Crack", pride and style were as inseparable as a beatbox and mixtape, or as a pair of shoes and matching purse. Once upon "A Time Before Crack", Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, working the streets of NYC capturing the faces and places of an era that have long since disappeared.

A Visual Biography
Cat: 803079

Hardback 224 page A4 book
Notes: Millions of fans would attest that this is a band eminently deserving of a Visual Biography. From the single sleeves through the passes, posters and promo items and of course, most especially Dave, Ed, Mikey and Al themselves (and Sam, Gary and Wolfgang!), Van Halen was an explosion of colour and action, resulting in a feast for the eyes within the pages of this sumptuously appointed book you now hold in your hands

As one celebrates this legendary band in karate-kicking action, from the mid-'70s all the way up until the last tour in 2015 and many solo points and projects in-between, provided for your reading pleasure is one of Martin Popoff's celebrated detailed timelines, stuffed with trivia that swiftly moves us through forty years of massive rock history from one of the storied greats of the genre."Runnin' with the Devil," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Unchained," "Jump," "Panama," "Hot for Teacher," "Why Can't This Be Love," "Finish What Ya Started," "Right Now"... these are some of the biggest anthems of all time, and accompanying the tunes is the narrative of two opposing lead singers, Diamond David Lee Roth and Sammy "Red Rocker" Hagar, both of whom are also represented in detail vis-a-vis their solo careers amongst the celebration of the core band at hand.

The end result is a beach-balling an' sun-tanned symphony of words and pictures, indeed a book that differs from previous Van Halen photography projects through the inclusion of so much rare memorabilia, side ephemera and otherwise nifty pictures of paper goods perking up each page as one basks in what this band managed to accomplish over four decades of white-knuckle rock on the edge.

After Math (Art Mystery: Part II) by Mayo Thompson

After Math is part 2 of Mayo Thompson's first published work of fiction since the nineteen-sixties, of which Art, Mystery is part 1. He is best known for his work with the psychedelic band, The Red Krayola.
Notes: If we are somewhat over-inundated with rock biographies right now, then you can trust The Red Krayola's Mayo Thompson to come up with something different. The second part of his 'After Math' series sees us catch up with a plot to smuggle a small erotic bronze out of Tirana and the subsequent plot twists and red herrings are as unexpected and bewildering as any The Red Krayloa recording.

Aja (by Don Breithaupt)
Cat: 428425 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: Aja was the album that made Steely Dan a commercial force on the order of contemporaries like Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Chicago. A double-platinum, Grammy-winning bestseller, it lingered on the Billboard charts for more than a year and spawned three hit singles. Odd, then, that its creators saw it as an "ambitious, extended" work, the apotheosis of their anti-rock, anti-band, anti-glamour aesthetic. Populated by thirty-fi ve mostly jazz session players, Aja served up prewar song forms, mixed meters and extended solos to a generation whose idea of pop daring was Paul letting Linda sing lead once in a while. And, impossibly, it sold. Including an in-depth interview with Donald Fagen, this book paints a detailed picture of the making of a masterpiece.
