Review: Kris Baha had a big year in 2019 with the release of his debut album on CockTail d'Amore and an EP on Pinkman, and now the Australian body music man in Berlin is back with a high-pressure heater for [Emotional] Especial. "Barely Alive" is the kind of sinewy proto-industrial cut that will appeal to fans of Ministry's earlier work, when the synths reigned supreme and there was pop to match the noir. Especial then call on a cast of remixers to interpret the track in different ways, from Timothy J Fairplay amping up the dystopian disco tropes to Das Ding creating a sleek electro-funk twist with the original's gothic undertones intact.

  1. You Can Win
  2. Let's Go
Review: DJ Fryer's Athens of the North imprint has provided soul and disco DJs with some killer 7" reissues since launching earlier this year. Here, he uncovers another obscure but oh-so-good gem. There's little information available about Bileo, aside from the fact that they released just two singles between 1979 and '83. "You Can Win" was there debut. It's a deliciously loose and celebratory chunk of disco-soul featuring spellbinding horns and a cheery, wholeheartedly positive vocal. It's the sort of disco-soul gem that makes us want to hug complete strangers before running into the sea fully clothed. The more low-slung disco-funk flipside, "Let's Go", is almost as good. Recommended.

  2. Trouble On The Land - A Love That Is Real (instrumental) (6:23)
Review: Ashley Beedle and Ray Mang aka The Boogie Twins have reworked and edited one of Paul "Trouble" Anderson's biggest signature tracks. Beedle claimed witnessing Anderson at work at his Electric Ballroom residency back in the day was a major influence, where the late selector would move through boogie, electro, hip-hop and disco, particularly the low slung groove of Trouble On The Land's "A Love That Is Real" that's featured on this 12". The pair get to work, offering a special dubbed-out edit of this rare groove classic which remains a much-loved staple of today's club scene and an example of Anderson's exceptional ear for music. This is a charity record and a tribute to Anderson, with all profits directed to Macmillan Cancer UK.

  1. I'm Always In The Mood (3:56)
  2. Love Is All We Need (4:50)
Review: First released back in 1978 on Parachute Records, Randy Brown's debut album "Welcome To My Room" is one of the better lesser-known Philadelphia soul style sets of the disco era. The team behind Expansions Records are certainly fans, because their latest "45" offers up two of the album's most potent tracks. A-side "I'm Always In The Mood" is simply superb, with Brown doing his best Teddy Pendergrass impression atop a heavily orchestrated, dancefloor-friendly backing track. Flipside "Love Is All We Need" is a little deeper but no less sumptuous, sounding a little like Vincent Montana producing "What's Going On" era Marvin Gaye. In a word: essential.

  2. Joy & Pain (Special Dynamite cuts DJ edit) (4:27)
Review: Dynamite excel with this rare bit of superb soul from Vernon Burch. "Lovely Lady" is set to be huge on the more heartfelt dance floors out there - the rolling bass loops sweep you off your feet, hip singing claps bring the joy and the vocal is as feel good and heartwarming as you can imagine. It's a tune that just keeps on going before a special dynamite cuts DJ edit on "Joy & Pain" ups the ante with a more driving disco groove. This one is powered by big horns and funk bass riffs, big backing singers and lead guitars that reach for the heavens. Utterly irresistible.

  1. Teddy (Caserta's Rooftop mix) (4:50)
  2. Teddy (Caserta's Basement dub) (4:53)
Review: With Valentine's Day just around the corner, Caserta and the rest of the Bridge Boots crew have decided to offer-up something decidedly glassy-eyed and loved-up - specifically two fresh bootleg re-makes of Teddy Pendergass's 1978 Philadelphia Soul classic "When Somebody Loves You Back". The seven-inch singles boasts two distinctively different versions. On the A-side you'll find the "Rooftop Mix", a striped-back blend of dub disco and boogie in which Pendergrass's fine vocals rise above a rubbery bassline, colourful '80s soul synths and toe-tapping beats. Over on the B-side Caserta flips the script, layering selected snippets of Pendergrass's vocal over a deep, dark and bass-heavy house groove. It's sub-titled the "Basement Dub" and that's exactly what it is.

Review: This is a first official repress of "Il Veliero" after the original 1982 12" release. It is an all-time Italo classic that is presented in full glory with the original sleeve and 12 minute extended mix that will carry you away on a slightly cheesy but easy to love disco groove full of warm sunny breeze and carefree melodic bliss. Two lesser known cuts take up the b-side - the playful percussive disco funk of "Welcome To The Party" and uptempo licks and sliding hi hats of "Dancin' On Town Square." Summer, where you at?

  1. Crowns Of Glory - "Lord, Look At Your People" (Joaquin Joe Claussell mix) (5:48)
  2. Keith Barrow - "A World Of Lonely People" (Joaquin Joe Claussell mix) (7:37)
Review: If the rich history of US gospel soul, funk and disco gets your juices flowing, you need this new 12" from Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell in your life. As with many of the storied producer's edit-focused 12" singles, it has been pressed in limited quantities and should therefore be grabbed before all the copies disappear. On the A-side he offers up a tidy, dancefloor-focused tweak of Crowns of Glory's hard-to-find 1976 gospel soul cut "Lord, Look At Your People", brilliantly teasing out the intro before unleashing the song in all its inspiring righteousness. Over on the flip Clausell turns his attention to the Clavinet-heavy, Blaxploitation-era gospel disco anthem that is Keith Barrow's equally as inspired 1977 gem "A World Of Lonely People".

  3. East Of The Apple (Al Kent remix) (8:17)
Review: Kalita's latest must-have 12" mines a notoriously obscure and hard-to-find private press seven-inch single, NYC outfit Cross Island's 1978 45 "East of the Apple". It's that record's alternative "Just a Little Different" mix that everyone's after, so that takes pride of place on side A. It's a percussive, low-slung affair - all heavy bass, Kong style Latin hand percussion and deep electric piano motifs - topped off by vocals espousing the virtues of Long Island. Glaswegian re-edit king Al Kent offers up an extended, more celebratory revision of the track on the flip, stretching out the intro drums before unleashing the song's more celebratory, life-affirming musical elements. He also delivers a remix of previously unreleased cut "Wave", a bustling disco-funk number full of crunchy Clavinet lines and soaring disco orchestration.

  2. So Smooth (5:34)
  3. So Smooth (Yam Who? rework) (7:41)
  4. So Smooth (instrumental) (5:25)
Review: Krystal Davis is perhaps not one of the disco and boogie era's better-known vocalists. She acted as a backing singer for a number of bands, Dazzle being the best known, and released just three singles. Of these, it's 1985 debut "So Smooth" - a loose, soulful and summery, Freestyle-era boogie jam - that's the most sought-after. This brand new Glitterbox edition partners the original vocal and instrumental versions with two brand new remixes. KON leads the charge with a rolling version that feels more energetic and peak-time friendly, largely as a result of more emphasis on the killer bassline and some house-friendly new beats. On the flip, Yam Who highlights the track's inherent breeziness, pushing the fluttering synth motifs to the fore while also adding a thrillingly dreamy new intro.

  2. La Musique (Palms Trax edit) (5:20)
Review: Although not widely known, Daniel Dimbas's 1985 album "La Diferencia" is regarded in some circles as one of the greatest Caribbean zouk records of all time, and certainly the heaviest. Rush Hour co-founder Antal is a fan, and here heads-up a double A-side of fresh edits of key cuts from the sought-after set. First up Antal expertly rearranges "Carnaval Soca", delivering a warm, humid and sweaty interpretation rich in driving soca-disco grooves, punchy horns, heady harmony vocals and mazy, Zouk style analogue synthesizer solos. Palms Trax takes a similarly light-touch approach on his edit of the breezier and more sun-kissed "La Musique", occasionally opting for filter trickery on an otherwise traditional style scalpel edit.

Review: They don't come much classier than Claremont 56, a label that deals in famously horizontal sounds that are superbly high quality. Deep88 is an Italian with a loveably analogue sound that is steeped in sunset house vibes. Add the two together and you have a perfect match. The a-side here finds Deep88 turn DJ Rocca and Leo Almunia's "Ever Changing Bubbles" into a lush Ibizan beach scene with sweet yacht rock riffs, warm drums and vocals that add an exotic feel. They're removed on the dub which is even more hypnotic.

  4. Soul Rebels - "I'll Be Good" (feat Lisa Millett - Dr Packer remix) (6:31)
Review: Defected's disco-minded Glitterbox offshoot has decided to dip a toe into the choppy waters (sorry) of the re-edit scene. The man at the control is fun-time rework specialist Dr Packer, an Australian scalpel specialist who has spent the last few years contributing tidy edits to a variety of well-regarded labels. First, he adds a little late '80s house shuffle to a soul-fired, boogie-era disco classic, before turning the equally familiar "Still in Love" into a bouncy, club-ready chunk of disco-house full of swirling strings and Chic-style guitars. On the flip the good doctor gets his hands a much-sampled electrofunk workout, retaining the drum delays while adding a touch of nu-disco swagger, before brilliantly dubbing out and tooling up the synth-heavy swagger of 1985 hit "I'll Be Good".

Review: UK disco sensation Glitterbox light the touch paper on another fizzy summer with four gossamer smooth edits of four seminal house classics. Gliding us through time to soulful house's golden era with a sassy, loose groove shine to each edit; Soulsearcher's 96 anthem "Can't Get Enough!" gets respectfully plumped, Shapeshifter's 2003 sing-along bomb "Lola's Theme" is stripped back to a stark funk groove while Johnny Corporate's 2000 hit "Sunday Shoutin'" gets flipped into slinky bassline wriggler. Finally one of the best covers Stevie Wonder has ever had gets a luxurious rub down as Cleptomaniacs' 2000 swoon-fest enjoys the full Packer treatment. Summer starts here.

  2. Jady Kurrent - "Standing There" (3:29)
Review: Backatcha Records can usually be relied upon to bring the goods, and this double A-side "45" is no exception. Side A boasts a fresh KON re-edit of the title track from Ja'net Dubois' fiendishly hard-to-find 1980 album "Queen of the Highway", a set that was for some reason only ever released in Brazil. It's a wonderfully sunny, horn-toting chunk of orchestrated jazz-funk/boogie fusion with definite Latin influences which Kon has expertly rearranged while steering clear of needless 21st century production trickery. Over on side B you'll find a previously unreleased cut from the Jady Kurrent Band, an obscure, Cleveland-based outfit who released a sole single in 1987. "Standing There" is a sweet slice of deep, mid-80s boogie rich in slap bass, slick lead vocals and '80s soul synths.

Previously only 80 seconds long, Fryer has managed to unearth a previously unreleased extended version that really digs into those honeyed harmonies. "My Love" takes us four years forward to their 13th album Raise! where the musical emphasis has developed from all-out vocal soul to a more restrained rare groove feel. Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Kinfolk, but the broad-sweeping label with cosmic chuggery in its bones is back with this powerful dose from Ess O Ess and Saulrichards. "Totem" is an epic track that rolls around in the muck somewhere between shoegaze extravagance, post-rock heaviness and psyched-out electronics. The "Swamp Crawl" version of the track keeps the guitars bedded deep within the mix, but there's space for more expressive synth work. Hardway Brothers take the track on a similarly rockist journey, but take their time building up to a climax. Otologic wrap things up with a deadly dub that will have low tempo trippers rubbing their hands with delight.

Review: Max Essa made his name through swathes of releases for Bear Funk, but broke through once more with his essential "Lanterns" LP for Music For Dreams back in 2018. His appearances have been scattered since, but now he makes a welcome return on Hell Yeah with some of that plush, full frequency synth disco business. "Tombolo" is defined by its rich layers of lead chords and cascading electronic percussion, but it's also made even more seductive by subtle splashes of dubby processing. "The Great Adventure" is a cooler jam for more mellow moments, but it's still no slouch in the funk department. "Fool In The Pool" finishes the record off with a truly laid back combination of tabla drums, electric piano and dreamy pads. Blissful, beautifully composed music to let the mind drift to.

Review: Sadly departed Italo-disco producer Gianfranco Felli enjoyed a successful career rebirth before passing away in 2015, though it's his early '80s work - and specifically 1983 debut single "Diamond In The Night" - that remains most celebrated. Here his most famous creation gets the reissue treatment, with the original Vocal and Instrumental versions - throbbing, bubbly chunks of purist Italo-disco pleasure complete with sequenced synthesizer basslines and cheeky pop flourishes - being supplemented by two new revisions. Flemming Dalum steps up first with an extended take that adds extra dancefloor weight to Felli's original version, while the Longdrink remix delivers cheerier, synth-pop-fired nu-disco thrills.

Here the slow disco classic gets the re-edit treatment courtesy of Japanese DJ/producer Diguma (aka MURO ) on a tidy 7" single. First up on side A is the "Club Edit", a multi-track revision (we think) that cannily layers Gardner's vocals and the key synth parts over the original version's killer groove. Review: German percussionist Kolja Gerstenberg makes no attempt to hide his love for the drums on this razor sharp drop for Lumberjacks In Hell, building on his previous outings on Suol and Smile For A While. The drums are sizzling hot on "Feel Yo", tastefully overdriven and embellished with some MPC-style sample juggling that should satisfy those who like their house tracks hot as Dante's inferno. "Where They're From" is no slouch either, keeping the pressure up with a liberal dose of soul poured in for good measure. The keys and live bass on "Want You" add to the feverish mood, and then "Get Over" sends things spiraling out on a Latin-spiced cosmic journey.

  2. Monsieur Van Pratt - "UFO" (6:29)
  3. Souldynamic - "Better" (6:26)
  4. De Gama - "Groove On" (7:21)
Review: Italian label Samosa continues to deliver re-edits with "Funk Purpose". Volume three is every bit as strong as its predecessors, with a quartet of experienced re-editors offering up fresh reworks. Get Down Edits set the tone with "Comin' At Ya", a riotously beefy, tooled-up house revision of an urgent funk-soul gem, before Monsieur Van Pratt gleefully dances into disco-funk territory via the spacey synths, groovy bass guitar, crunchy Clavinet licks and fluttering flute solos of "UFO". Over on side B Souldynamic provides some rubbery disco bounce via "Better", while De Gama goes all samba-house with the cowbell-propelled South American style Hammond funk of "Groove On".

  1. Run Down World (5:55)
  2. Times Are Bad (8:00)
Review: Remarkably, almost a decade has passed since the first missive from re-edit crew Heavy Disco (AKA Ashley Beedle, Dave Jarvis and Darren House) landed in stores. Here the London collective returns for the first time in four years with two more tried-and-tested dancefloor rubs. "Run Down World" is particularly delicious, delivering a groovy revision of what sounds like one of the Police's hazier and more groove-based moments (IE there's less reggae influence and more of an AOR disco flex - think great grooves and flanged, spaced-out guitars). On side B it's all about "Times Are Bad", a fine extended revision of Tavares' deep disco/Steely Dan-goes-jazz-funk rub "Bad Times" that seems eerily fitting for the situation the world is in.
