Review: Alongside like-minded imprints Claremont 56 and International Feel, Coyote's Is It Balearic? label - a fitting name, given the difficulty in pinpointing the Balearic sound - has been at the forefront of the nu-Balearic scene for the last five years. Here, they celebrate that fact by offering up a celebratory compilation with pal Moonboots and Coyote each selecting a disc of unmixed favourites. There's predictably plenty of sun-kissed downtempo warmth (Windsurf's sunrise-friendly remix of Coyote's "Laidback", Gavin Gordon's flamenco-influenced "El Sueno Oscuro"), alongside a smattering of deliciously baggy and wide-eyed dancefloor moments (see Max Essa's jaunty Balearic disco jam "Heartache" and a thrillingly griity Soft Rocks remix of Social Disco Club). If that wasn't enough to get the juices flowing, the collection also features some stunning unreleased material from Freshro and Khidja Looki.

  11. Alessandro Scellino - "Dinner In The Jungle" (Erotic mix)
  12. Brian Tatcher - "Hot Love" (instrumental dub version)
  13. Preludio - "Mysterious Nights"
Review: Ilan Pdahtzur is as obsessive a record digger as any of his more visible peers. His particular niche is early to mid-eighties club music, and now he gets a platform to show off his skills thanks to the Spacetalk label. "Night City Life" is about music to match that exact setting - nocturnal urban metropolises with glowing neon lights shimmering in the darkness. There's a lot to love across four sides of vinyl here, from Italo disco to steamy boogie cuts and iridescent synth jams. It will make you nostalgic for a time and place you've never experienced (at least not as perfectly as this) and no doubt get plenty of dance floors on their feet.

Volume 1: The Sound Of Mercury Rising

  1. Locussolus - "Next To You" (Marcy Rising edit)
  2. Elkin & Nelson - "Abran Paso - Ahoa (Enrolle)"
  3. Eighth Wonder - "I'm Not Scared" (Disco mix)
  4. Idjut Boys - "One For Kenny"
  5. Roberto Rodriguez - "Mustat Varjot"
  6. Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony - "Spanish Boogie"

  9. Tony Esposito - "Danza Dell'Acqua"
  10. No ID - "Love Mecanica (Not Love Game)"
  11. Tore - "She's A Lady"
  12. Gatto Fritto - "Invisible College"
Review: Many claim to be "Balearic" DJs, but few genuinely are. DJ Harvey certainly is, as his triumphant summer residency at Pikes in Ibiza proved. If you didn't get a chance to check out the lauded veteran in action on the White Isle, fear not, because The Sound of Mercury Rising is almost entirely made up of music he championed over the summer. As you'd expect, it mixes notably obscure or overlooked gems from the distant past (Elkin & Nelson, the brilliant disco mix of Eighth Wonder's Pet Shop Boys' produced "I'm Not Scared", the Spanish-themed disco of Van McCoy, a killer Tony Esposito cut, and so on) with more recent fare that have tickled Harvey's fancy (the Idjut Boys, Gatto Fritto and the producer's own Locussolus project).

Review: Since debuting in the early 2000s, Dutch trio Kraak & Smaak have established themselves as one of Europe's premier purveyors of eclectic, funk-fuelled dancefloor positivity. It's little surprise then to find that their new album "Pleasure Centre" - their sixth studio set in total - is another joyous romp. This time round, they've drawn more influence from West Coast style blue-eyed soul and yacht rock while continuing to offer nods towards boogie, P-funk, synth-pop, '80s soul, jazz-funk and Rotary Connection (see the superb "Twilght", with vocals by rising star Izo FitzRoy). It's a wonderfully warm and attractive blend, with the result being a superb collection of dancefloor cuts and heady downtempo numbers that all adds up to their best album to date.

On A Clear Day I Can See You Forever
  1. On A Day Like This I Can See You Forever
  2. Really Deep Snow
  3. Swing Low Sweet LFO
  4. As If No One Is Here
Review: On his 2008 debut album "Where You Go, I Go Too", Hans-Peter Lindstrom offered up a grandiose vision that was almost cinematic in scope. His new album, "On A Clear Day I Can See You Forever", opts for a similar approach, delivering a quartet of atmospheric, moody and filmic cuts that slowly rise, fall and unfurl throughout their duration. Whether or not he becomes Norway's answer to Vangelis, that's the kind of vibe we get from stunningly icy and alien ambient opener "On A Clear Day I Can See You Forever" and the bubbly, uptempo throb of "Really Deep Snow". It's there, too, on the outer-space bliss of "Swing Low Sweet LFO" (we chuckled, at least) - think Radiophonic Workshop meets Jean-Michel Jarre - and the melancholic, modular-sounding beauty of clicking and echoing closing cut "As If No One Is Here". In a word: stunning.

Review: Brothers Simon and Robin Lee have long excelled at the album format, delivering occasional sets that ripple with impressive musicality, sinewy strings, cozy downtempo moods and upbeat dancefloor moments. Body of One, their fourth full length (their first dropped on Nuphonic back in 1997), continues this trend, offering a compelling trip through the pair's myriad influences. After opening with a sweaty post-punk thumper ("Prisoner of Your Love"), we're variously treated to Italo-influenced vintage house ("Magic Touch"), rubbery disco-funk ("Freak For Your Love"), Arthur Russell-influenced tropical downtempo pop ("Caruso's Monkey House"), dreamy Balearica ("Floating World") and string-laden gorgeousness. As for the title track, it sounds like So-era Peter Gabriel.

Review: In 2009, longtime collaborators Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper made their production partnership official via the Director's Cut project. This epic retrospective gathers together the best tracks and remixes the duo completed prior to Knuckles' death in 2014. Disc one offers up original productions, including ear-catching re-makes of some of Knuckles' most famous early works (we're particularly fond of the versions of "The Whistle Song", "Your Love" and "I'll Take U There"). On the second disc you'll find the best of their remix work, with standouts including a sublime take on Candi Staton's "Hallelujah Anyway" and a storming, previously unreleased version of Lou Rawls' "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". As a bonus, the third disc mixes the best of the lot together in one suitably gorgeous, non-stop journey.

Review: Dating from tape recordings made between 1996 - 2012, Cosmic Vibrations follows the Tropical Psychedelics (ERS003) album for the label, this time digging deeper in to the mind of Secret Circuit than the more dance flor inspired sounds heard on last years album Tactile Galactics album for Beats In Space. Again we glimpse a melting pot of pyschedelia, techno, balearic and ambient to create an electronic gem, but all done with a wry smile and jesters wink rather than today's penchant of moody seriousness. Life on the US West Coast shines from the album, from opener Out West to She Got Love, sunshine music that couldn't be made anywhere else. It's not all hippy-happy vibes though with Minimal Vibrations and the dub of Straightline taking things in to deeper and instropective territory. However, all things resonate in Eddie's analogue meets kitchen sink synthesis. Layer after layer flats across the album to create a smile-inducing whole. Journeying from the folk guitar of Somnambulation to the minimilism of Glass Skeletons, before bidding a fond farewell in the apt, Bells. This second and fial collection of early cassette works is not an end, but a blessing.

Review: Italians Do It Better continues with their deluxe reissue pledge for 2010 delivering the definitive edition of Chromatics classic 2007 album Night Drive. For a multiplicity of reasons (most notably misplaced master tapes) the version that has gained a million column inches in the past three years was never meant to be heard, an incomplete demo version burned to hand out at tours. Having located the masters some 18 months later, Simonetti and co do the smart thing in presenting this deluxe edition, replete with the five tracks missing from the demo CD and fully remastered. Thus Johnny Jewel's original cinematic vision is presented in its full glory seeping in analogue warmth. Enough words have been dedicated to the tracks that filled the 2007 demo version that it seems redundant to spill any more ink on the matter though the Kate Bush cover does sound delicious! The five extra tracks make this a more than worthy purchase, from the poignant piano heartbeat of "Shining Violence" to the final departure via the Carpenter esque synth dynamics of "Accelerator".

Review: Eight albums in and !!! are still as hard to define than the band's name is difficult to say. They've always managed to resonate with the sound and zeitgeist of the year in which they release, and "Wallop" doesn't differ from that modus. An amalgamation of tones at once uptempo and hedonistic yet brutally damaged, it's an electronic album built in the way the genres it pays homage to originally were - blueprint free. We've got dance-rock crossovers, straight up techno (albeit aimed squarely at non-die-hard-heads) and bouncing broken funk-house hybrids, so what more do you want? "Couldn't Have Known" nods to classic Basement Jaxx. "Domino" takes us down an IDM wormhole, where we meet the aptly titled "Ur Paranoid" and its pulsating intensity. Simultaneously referencing Primal Scream, trip hop, Madchester, whatever that track that set the club off last night was while sounding like none of the above, it's archetypal !!! business.

  11. Indian Ocean - "School Bell/Tree House"
Review: Second time around for Joey Negro and Sean P's peerless collection of post-punk era New York club cuts, a compilation that proved hugely influential when it was first released way back in 2000. The track listing strangely omits one track present on the original release (the full 16-minute version of Steve Miller Band's "Macho City"), but otherwise it's a faithful reproduction. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the eccentric electrofunk of Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" and P-funk influenced strut of Material's "Over And Over", to the skittish jazz-goes-dub disco bustle of Don Cherry's "I Walk" and the low-slung percussive voodoo of Nicky Siano's "Move". The undisputed master of NYC leftfield disco, Arthur Russell, is represented via cuts from Loose Joints, Dinosaur and Indian Ocean.

Review: After the brilliance of his intoxicating Themes From An Imaginary Film album, there's no doubt that Chromatics producer Johnny Jewel is on a roll. Here, he returns to his roots to helm the fourth full-length from the futurist crew, their first since 2007. In typical fashion, it's a beguiling set that draws on Jewel's usual cinematic influences. Musically, it sounds like a particularly heart-aching road movie, shuffling across the mid west via dark soundtrack moods ("Candy","11th Hour" and "Dust To Dust"), fragile balladeering ("Birds Of Paradise"), eyeliner-laden electronic moodiness ("A Matter of Time"), and Johnny Marr-goes-to-the-movies indie-pop (see "Kill For Love", "Into the Black" and "Back From The Grave").

Review: With the possible exception of The Reflex, no other producer can match the multi-track re-edits and remixes delivered by house maestro and long-time disco digger Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee. Having laid down a marker with 2013's Remixed With Love, the veteran producer has decided to emphasize his credentials with this similarly superb follow-up. Over the course of two action-packed discs, Lee skillfully re-arranges 20 disco and boogie favourites, using the inherent swing, funk and energy of his source material to create superb, dancefloor-friendly tweaks. Amongst the well-known cuts - think "Pull Up To The Bumper", "Keep The Fire Burning" and "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" - you'll also find sublimely soulful rearrangements of overlooked cuts from Nicolette Larson, Cheryl Lynn and Norman Connors.

Review: Few can match BBE when it comes to the funk and disco compilation stakes - the label's been issuing killer compendiums curated by some of the finest and most eminently knowledgeable DJs and diggers since the mid 90s. Soul In The Hole sees them hand the controls to Sadar Bahar, Chicago based DJ described by BBE as the city's "best kept secret". Bahar began DJing in the early 80s, a historically important time for music in Chicago and states he was driven by an "unquenchable desire to create one of the best collections ever". This 12 track compilation demonstrates Bahar has achieved that with aplomb, traversing through a colourful range of funk, soul, disco and boogie, with Frederic Mercier's "Spirit" a real gem.

Soundtracking the gritty downtown NYC streets he made his first mark on, this limited collection captures the whole melting pot from b-boy culture with cuts such as "E.T Boogie" and "Bump N Grind", raw boogie and soul ("Over & Over") and pure drama ("The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us"). A powerful collection as striking and relatable as his own signature.

Review: Following the runaway success of their Magick Cyrcles and Magick Sunrise compilations, Psychemagik return with another selection of wilfully obscure Balearic gems. There's a subtly breezy, occasionally humid feel to much of the material this time round, with the acclaimed crate diggers' selections flitting between stoned blue-eyed soul, baked west coast rock, curious, semi-spoken word pieces, and the kind of material that suggests getting horizontal as a matter of priority. It goes without saying, of course, that the selections are thrillingly deep, with a tracklist that will have even the most committed record collectors scratching their heads.

Review: Three years on from his last acclaimed outing on Endless Flight, Berlin-based Canadian Eddie C returns to the Japanese label with another high quality full-length excursion. Those who've followed his career over the last six or seven years will feel at home straight away. Opener "Hello baby" is a quirky, break-driven head-nodder rich in dub disco bass and quirky samples, while the cut that follows, "Carbon Date", offers a deeper and more spacey take on the same heady blueprint. From then on its' a loved-up, saucer-eyed jaunt through laidback Balearic disco grooves ("In The Park"), spaced-out punk-funk ("Way Uptown"), percussion-packed Latin beats ("Batacuda"), bustling breakbeat house ("Berlina"), warped digital dub ("Dancin' Music") and spaced-out broken beat ("Listen"). In a word: superb.

Review: For their latest expansive and hugely entertaining release, Cree Records have gathered together killer cuts from their back catalogue that were originally written, produced and released in tropical climes (think West and East Africa, the Caribbean, South America and South East Asia in particular). The included tracks are invariably superb and highlights are plentiful throughout. We're particularly loving Frankie Francis' Sofrito Edit of Embryo's undulating tropical funk jam "Wajang Woman", the buzzing Afro-funk of Versatile's "Let It Out", the humid and percussive jauntiness of "Lena" by Andre Tanker Five, the sizzling soca of Merchant & The Network Riddum Band's "Rub-A-Dub-Soka" and Delroy Wilson's formidably dubbed-out reggae cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues".

Review: For the latest volume in their crate-digging disco series, Under The Influence, Z Records has turned to long-serving British brothers Simon and Robin Lee AKA Faze Action. In keeping with the series' dusty-fingered ethos, there's plenty of brilliant rarities to set the pulse racing - see the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the sublime Afro-disco brilliance of Bebe Manga, the up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements" and the South American disco swirl of Don Lurio's "Ruba Ruba" - as well as a smattering of obscure versions of classic dancefloor hits (check Michele Claire's version of "In The Bush"). You'll also find a smattering of killer Faze Action edits, too, with their version of Midway's "Set It Out" and Mikki's freestyle-era boogie ham "Dance Lover" standing out.

Review: Favorite Recordings' superb Disco Boogie Sounds series continues. Following Waxist's recent exploration of French productions from the period, they've decided to drop a second collection of high-grade Brazilian material. Renowned crate-digger Charles Maurice has done a terrific job of gathering together dusty, obscure cuts that perfectly encapsulate Brazilian musicians' sun-kissed, soulful approach to disco and boogie. Highlights are naturally plentiful, and include the starry, jazz-funk tinged warmth of Christina Camargo's "Minas Do Rei Salomao", the Chic style brilliance of Almir Ricardi's "To Parado Na Tua", and the cosmic, horn-heavy leftfield disco thrills of Kaito's "Cara Feia".

Review: Given the stone-cold-classic status of Patrice Rushen's disco-era recordings on Elektra, it's little surprise to see Strut offering up this superb retrospective of that key period in her career. Naturally, the big club hits are present - "Feels So Real (Can't Let Go)", "Haven't You Heard", "Number One" and "Forget Me Nots" - but it's the quality of the lesser celebrated cuts and album tracks that most impresses. For proof, check the sharp horns and good grooves of "Look Up (Extended Version)", the breezy boogie bounce of "Never Gonna Give You Up (Won't Let You be)" and the electric piano solo-laden seductiveness of "Remind Me (LP Version)". There's naturally plenty of sweet slow jams to savour, too, those to our ears these pale in comparison to Rushen's dancefloor-focused output.

Review: Given the depth of his record collection, you'd expect crate-digging hero Andy Smith to be able to put together a rather good disco and boogie compilation. That's exactly what he does here. Named after his disco-themed DJ collective, Reach Up does a great job in joining the dots between familiar anthems (Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", World Premiere's "Share The Night", Freedom's break-diggin' fave "Get Up & Dance" and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk smash "Holding Me Tight") and slightly deeper, often overlooked selections (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). Smith's mix on disc one is typically smooth, entertaining and on-point, while the unmixed second disco offers an opportunity to own the same cuts in full-length, DJ-friendly form.

Review: Bostonian DJ, producer and crate digger Serge Gamesbourg has spent much of the last two years slavishly digging into the history of Massachusetts' little known underground disco scene. Here, over mixed and unmixed discs, he presents the results. Naturally, there's little you'll have heard before, and plenty of high-grade dancefloor fire, much of it re-edited or subtly reworked by Gamesbourg himself. Highlights include the fuzzy, lo-fi funk of Gypsy's "Keep It Comin' On", the turn-of-the-'80s, synth-laden disco-funk dazzle of Portable Patrol's "Cop Bop", the celebratory release of "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics and the smooth, blue-eyed soul shimmer of "Wait Until Dark" by The Chris Rhodes Band.

Review: With so many archival labels putting out compilations of 1970s Nigerian funk and disco, Soundway has decided to change tack. Doing It In Lagos is a primer on the country's lesser-celebrated 1980s boogie scene. According to the superb liner notes, most of the music on show here - and, yes, it's universally brilliant - was created by a younger generation of musicians who wanted to move away from Afrobeat, and further towards an authentically American style electrofunk sound. As a result, many of the tracks featured on Doing It In Lagos - not least Hotline's brilliant opener, Livy Ekemezie's disco-funk slammer "Holiday Action" and Sonny Enang's superb "Don't Stop That Music" - are every bit as special as the American-produced records they were trying to emulate.

Review: During its lifespan, sadly departed London club Plastic People had it all: an intimate space to dance, an astonishingly good audiophile sound system, and a crew of resident DJs that included the mighty Theo Parrish. The Detroiter's sets there, which ran for a minimum of six hours, have naturally become the stuff of legend. Three years after the club closed, Parrish has decided to release the recording of his final set there - a thrillingly free-wheeling, three-disc voyage that dizzily and gleefully joins the dots between jazz, soul, disco, funk, deep house, acid, techno and much more besides. The three discs capture Parrish at his most lively and esoteric, providing a musical journey that will delight dancers and armchair listeners alike.

Review: Magik Cyrkles invites you the listener to bask in the impressive record collections of Psychemagik, for it seems that the prolific edit and DJ duo operate a nice sideline helping to furnish everyone from Soulwax to Q-Tip to Love Fingers with rare and highly sought after vinyl. Anyone whose familiar with their output since their emergence from The Cosmic Forest in 2009 will not be surprised given the off the beaten track source material for much of their edits. This Leng released compilation veers through all manner of psychedelic funk, cosmodisco, Middle Eastern oddities and much more, with four excusive new edits from the Psychemagik duo themselves. Those with dusty fingers and a penchant for the odder forgotten gems will no doubt be entranced as soon as Intrinsic Trance's opener commences and the label have really surpassed themselves in the presentation stakes with some apt cover art from acclaimed designer Luke Insect adorning this double CD release.

Here they switch tack, curating a brilliant double-album set that showcases the best Japanese synth-pop, AOR and boogie recorded between 1976 and '86. The quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, from the blue-eyed-soul breeze of Taeko Ohnuki's "Kusuri Wo Takusan" and the Chaz Jankel-meets-Thompson Twins style throb of Haruomi Hosono's "Sports Men", to the talkbox-sporting late night AOR-pop flex's Hiroshi Satoh's "Say Goodbye" and the glistening, Latin-influenced jazz-funk brilliance of Masayoshi Takanaka's steel pan-sporting "Bamboo Vender".

Review: As Claremont 56's superb Originals series of crate-digging compilations tiptoes towards the final curtain (a celebratory vinyl box-set is due later in the year), label boss Paul Murphy hands the reigns over towards longtime pals DJ Spun and Ben Cook, the men behind San Fran/New York imprint Rong Music. If you've heard either DJ, you'd expect their selection to jump between a myriad of dubby, stargazing styles, and that's exactly what they deliver. From the intergalactic ambience of Space Time Continuum's "Transmitter", to the low-slung dub disco of Futura 2000, via the Balearic house shuffle of FM Inc and spaced-out punk-funk of Big Boys, it's a treasure trove of thrillingly atmospheric obscurities. Review: For those with an interest in the development of electronic music in the late '70s and early '80s, the sporadic synth-wave collections from New York-based Minimal Wave Records have always been essential listening. This latest missive, originally released on a limited vinyl pressing earlier this year, offers another treasure trove of little known and unreleased material from the period. Most pleasingly, it offers a truly global outlook, showcasing music from Japan, the US, UK and the former Yugoslavia. Predictably, there's much to enjoy, from the skewiff vocoder electro of Polaroid and low-end madness of Robert Lawrence to the synth-phonic doodlings of Reserve and new wave strut of Danton's Voice.

To get us in the mood, the London-based label has decided to reissue the band;s sole previous album, 1980's Elephant Sunrise. While the album is best known for the impeccable jazz-funk sweetness of "Sugar Free" - recorded, like much of the rest of the album, by a mixture of locals and guest musicians from a nearby U.S army base - there's much to enjoy throughout, from the psychedelic heaviness of opener "TMFF" and elastic dancefloor workout "Psychic Summers", to the slap-bass-propelled funk-rock of "Wild Turkey" and intense, full-throttle closer "Zugabe (Encore)".

Given that the Portland band have now released seven acclaimed sets, that's some claim. This first "deluxe" CD edition adds previously unheard cuts and alternative versions, but it's the core set - featured on the first half of the CD - that really sparkles. As you might expect, it's not only full of the atmospheric, slow motion synth-pop with which they made their name, but also a swathe of cuts heavily influenced by the cinematioc soundtrack work Jonny Jewel has been concentrating on since their previous full-length dropped back in 2012. In other words, it's quite possibly Chromatics' most evocative and rounded set to date.

Review: More from Studio Mule's must-check "Midnight In Tokyo" series, which gathers together obscure gems from the Japan that "sound best listened to at night". While the previous volume largely focused on forgotten Japanese jazz-funk, this edition is more eclectic in tone, variously touching on rare groove, new wave, soul and disco. It's another belting selection, all told, with highlights including the breathy sleaziness of Yoko Hatanaka's "More Sexy", the post-punk boogie eccentricity of Mari Kaneko's "Get To Paradise", the sprightly synth-funk of "Sunshine Bright On Me" by Kangaroo and the synth-rock silliness of The Fad's wonderfully over-the-top "Singing Lady".

Review: After a quintet of volumes dedicated to exploring 1970s and '80s yacht rock, blue-eyed soul and pitched-down disco, the Too Slow To Disco Crew has decided to bring the story bang up to date. To do this, DJ Supermarkt has put together a compilation showcasing contemporary French music that draws huge influence from the lazy, sun-kissed retro sounds that has always been the series' trademark. There's much to admire from start to finish, from the sugary sweetness of Poom's "De La Vitesse A L'Ivresse" and the sensual throb of Catastrophe's "L'Amour Tout Nu", to the lolloping nu-disco cheeriness of DJ Supermarkt and Jack Tennis' rework of Bertrand Burgalat's ""Les Choses Qu'On Ne Peut Dire A Personne", and the fluttering synth-pop breeziness of Bleu Toucan.

Review: An active producer and remixer since the 1990s, Nigel Lowis has a knack for crafting classic-sounding reworks that effortlessly join the dots between contemporary soulful house and the classic sounds of Philly Soul, disco, jazz-funk and boogie. For proof, check out this second collection of new, rare and little-known Lowis reworks. Those of a soulful persuasion will find much to enjoy throughout, from the slick, sax-sporting Philadelphia Soul revivalism of Lowis' take on Tilly Grace's "The Soul Man Theme", and a string-laden, Chic style "Super Disco Mix" of Fiona Yorke's "Love For Me", to the sugary-sweet slo-mo revision of Marc Staggers' "Timeless" and the boogie-tinged soulful house re-make of Kenny Thomas' "Back On Broadway".

Review: Larry Levan's influence on the development of dance music in New York during the 1980s cannot be overstated. That much is clear from Genius Of Time, a two-disc collection of the Paradise Garage resident's finest remixes. Heavy on dub delays, spaced-out synthesizers and rolling grooves, it gathers together a swathe of stone-cold classics - killer reworks of Gwen Guthrie, Man Friday, Peech Boys, Loose Joints and Jimmy Ross - with lesser-known, but no less vital, tweaks of cuts from Dee Dee Bridgewater, Esther Williams, Smokey Robinson and Tramaine. While dedicated fans will have many of these already, it serves as the perfect introduction to Levan's distinctive and hugely influential style.

Review: Z Records' Under The Influence series, which peeks into the formative inspirations of notable crate diggers, is rarely less than essential. This fifth installment, from disco specialist Sean P, is, if anything, even better than its' predecessors. The veteran Londoner has opted to steer clear of obvious favourites, instead packing the two discs with killer rarities and lesser-known gems. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the breezy disco-soul chunkiness of Joanne Ellis's "Bye Baby", and thrillingly sweaty Caribbean disco madness of Sean P's own edit of Don & Oli's "Superman", to the slick, synth-heavy boogie shuffle of Les Femmes' "Yes You Thrill Me", and the sax-laden sleaziness of Starship Gibley's break-diggin' favourite "Take A Train".

Review: It would be fair to say that Winston is nowhere near as well known as some of the record collectors who've compiled volumes in the "Under The Influence" series (think Nick The Record, Sean P and Red Greg), but it seems his crates are every bit as deep. Check, for example, the unashamedly celebratory, slap-bass propelled disco-funk of Doug Payne and Polygon's "Holiday", the heady, high-octane disco thrills of Expose's "I Just Wanna Dance With You", the low-slung early funk-rap headiness of Jungle Band's "Jungleland (Part 2)" and the wickedly percussive salsa-disco heaviness of Suave's "Salsa Gon Gitcha". In other words, it's a killer collection of top-notch cuts that you'll never have heard before. What's not to like?

Review: The rise of Jayda G in the last few years has been remarkable, though those who've heard her DJ sets will confirm that she's more than worthy of the accolades coming her way. Now firmly part of the Ninja Tune family, the Canadian has delivered a debut album that has set tongues wagging. With boisterous Alexa Dash collaboration "Leave Room 2 Breathe" and the skewed lo-fi disco warmth of "Move To The Front (Disco Mix)" being the lead singles -the set is packed full of top tracks that draw on a disparate range of complimentary influences (proto-house, Chicago house, deep house, dreamy breaks, disco, electrofunk etc). To be honest, we wouldn't expect anything less.

Review: A couple of years back, Running Back boss Gerd Janson wrote an in-depth article for Red Bull Music Academy about Tony Humphries' legendary "Mastermixes" - all-action mixes originally created for NYC radio stations in the '80s and '90s. With this in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising that he commissioned the legendary DJ to give the Running Back catalogue the same treatment. Predictably, Humphries has come up with the goods, delivering a loved-up, melodious and classic sounding trip through mostly synth-heavy, classic-sounding label highlights. That it sounds like the kind of set you'd actually hear from Humphries is testament not only to the quality of his track selection and mixing, but also the suitability of the Running Back catalogue.

Review: For almost a decade from the mid 1980s onwards, Hamburg's Front Club was one of Germany's leading bastions of underground merriment. Although its roots were as a gay club for a discerning crowd that demanded better than the commercial fare that was on offer elsewhere, it went on to become a haven for underground dance music enthusiasts of all sexual persuasions. Here, resident DJs Klaus Stockhausen and Boris Dlugosch serve up a two-disc taste of life on Front's dancefloor, giddily joining the dots between experimental European synth-pop, Italo-disco, New York proto-house, early Chicago jack-tracks, electro-funk, Bobby 'O' Orlando style Fairlight-driven high-energy stompers, Detroit techno and much more besides. As you'd expect, it's a sweaty, celebratory and thrill-a-minute ride.

Review: At the tail end of the '80s, Sylvia Striplin quit Norman Connors' jazz-funk group Aquarian Dream in order to pursue a solo career. Joining forces with producers James Bedford and Roy Ayers, she recorded 1981 debut album "Give Me Your Love", a well regarded but largely overlooked set that has since become a sought-after item amongst soul collectors. This Expansion reissue presents the album on CD for the first time in two decades. As with many soul albums of the period, it sashays between jazz-funk, boogie and heartfelt slow jams, contrasting memorable dancefloor workouts (see stone cold classic "Give Me Your Love" and a stellar cover of Roy Ayers favourite "Searchin") with more saccharine, loved-up fare. This edition also boasts a couple of bonus cuts, including the superb 7" mix of "Give Me Your Love".

Here she presents her first compilation CD, a 12-track salvo packed to the rafters with high-grade boogie and disco treats. While there a few well-known scene staples present - think Claudja Barry's "Sweet Dynamite", Staple Singers' cover of Talking Heads' "Slippery People" and the killer dub of Geraldine Hunt's "Can't Fake This Feeling" - it's the lesser-known delights that really sparkle. Highlights include the soulful disco-funk shuffle of Project's "Love Rescue", the slap-bass propelled brilliance of Dee Dee Sharp Gamble's "Breaking & Entering", Shawn Jackson's sensual electrofunk roller "Loveline" and a pair of hot-to-trot slammers from Suzy Q.

Review: When co-founder Bernard Edwards passed away in 1996, it seemed unlikely that Nile Rodgers would have the stomach to record another Chic album. Yet here we are, two decades later, with Rodgers and his reborn Chic collective enjoying a career renaissance. "It's About Time", the first Chic album since 1992, is an all-star affair, with Rodgers calling on the services of a range of high-profile pals - Sir Elton John, Lady Gaga and Craig David included - to sing or rap over backing tracks that draw on sounds and styles dominant during the band's near 50-year career. That means there are plenty of nods to disco, of course, but also new jack swing, hip-hop, R&B, boogie, synth-pop, house, '80s soul and much, much more.

Review: During its late '70s and early '80s heyday, France's disco-boogie scene tended towards the eccentric. Yet despite the camp, tongue-in-cheek feel adopted by many French bands and producers, much of the music was of an impressively high standard. That much is clear from Charles Maurice's second French Disco Boogie Sounds compilation. Packed full of slick, synthesizer-driven material and punchy, horn-heavy disco-funk thrillers (see the Teena Marie style "Movin" by Jackie Esam), it's a fine collection of Gallic dancefloor treats. You're unlikely to find a better example of jazz-funk positivity than Black Bells Group's "Talk Me Mam's", while Messan's "Keep Cool" is a lesson in thrusting, up-tempo disco sweatiness.

Review: Despite boasting a discography packed to the rafters with successful forays into various vintage dancefloor styles, some were still surprised at the brilliance of his first Voilaaa album, On Te L'avait Dit. This follow-up is equally as impressive, and features 13 more trips into classic Afro-funk and tropical disco territory. With addictive Clavinet lines, punchy horns, heavy live percussion and Afrobeat bass to the fore, Hovart and his many collaborators - including a number of French vocalists with African heritage - variously pay tribute to a wealth of late '70s and early '80s dancefloor fusion sounds. The album includes all manner of club-ready workouts, including the righteous "Problems", disco-tastic "Kemtane" and sweaty, high octane "Mbele".

Review: On his fourth exploration of the world of global "Adult Oriented Rock", French crate-digger Charles Maurice focuses on the period between 1977 and '86. That means a greater emphasis on synthesizers, dusty drum machines and the kind of sparkling melodies that would once have drifted from daytime radio at an alarming rate. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the dewy-eyed synth-soul of Arlana's "When You Call My Name" and the breezy boogie of Omega Sunrise's "Too Hip", to the sparse Balearic bliss of Isabelle Mayereau's "Orange Bleue", the flute-laden easy listening hum of Fernando Toussaint, the sax-happy '80s sleaze of Special Occasion's brilliant "Flyin' To Santa Barbara" and the jaunty Latino jazz-funk of "Mellow Out" by Pacific Dreams.

Review: Disco producer, synthesizer pioneer and Hi-NRG originator Patrick Cowley made a lot of highly sexual music. In fact, his muscular synth-disco productions were, for years, the soundtrack of choice in San Francisco's notorious bathhouse scene. It doesn't stop there, though. Unbeknownst to most disco aficionados, Cowley also provided experimental synthesizer tracks to soundtrack gay porn films between 1973 and 1981. Initially released on vinyl last year, School Daze has now been granted a CD edition by Dark Entries and gathers together the best of those productions. Arguably, the material here is amongst his best work. Free of the constraints of the dancefloor, Cowley let himself go, delivering avant garde synthesizer compositions that ranged from spaciously psychedelic ("Out of Body", like some lost Confused House record) and decidedly cosmic (the chugging "Journey Home"), to otherworldly and outlandish ("Zygote"). Recommended.

Review: When Joey Negro and Sean P established the Disco Spectrum series of compilations back in 1999, few DJs were digging for disco. Almost two decades on, we're told that disco was the sound of summer 2017 (and the summer before that). The time is right, then, for this "best of", containing the finest cuts from the series' three previous volumes. This time round, the crate-digging duo has opted for a mixture of familiar favourites ("Spread Love", "Out Of My Hands (Love's Taking Over)", "Bourgie Bourgie", "Together Forever" etc.) and harder to find gems. These include Caribbean disco classic "Trinidad" by John Gibbs and the US Steel Orchestra, Blair's sumptuous "Nightlife" and Larry Levan's brilliant remix of Syreeta's synth-laden slammer "Can't Shake Your Love".
