Backstrokin'
Cat: BAC 001. Rel: 17 Apr 19
  1. Goin' To See My Baby (6:03)
  2. Backstrokin' (5:58)
Review: First up on the freshly minted Bacalao imprint is Bosq, a Ubiquity Records contributor renowned for his blends of funk, soul and sweaty South American music. While the heavy horns featured on this release were recorded in Bogota, the producer's usual Colombian flavour takes a back seat as he joins forces with Kaleta to deliver two covers of Fatback Band classics. First up is "Goin' To See My Baby", which is re-imagined as a fuzzy funk workout rich in rasping horns, tropical guitar flourishes and woodblock-driven Latin disco percussion. Arguably even better is the duo's cover of "Backstrokin'", which is given a Barrio-funk flavour complete with prominent bass, heavy-hitting horn motifs and excitable lead vocals.

Review: A new week, a new edits label, this time from BPlan & Fab_o. It kicks off in fantastic fashion with four edits that will boost your spot no end. There is loose and jumbled afro-disco on "Sweet Brasil" and then stripped back disco-house loops a la early DJ Sneak on "Aroma Club". The flip side again leans on afro for its sunny vibes with "Arabica Selection" and it might be that the best is saved until last. "West Africa" is built on funky bass riffs, with flailing percussion, chunky drums and vocal chants that will lock in any crowd.

  1. Stop (3:54)
  2. Doin' It Our Way (3:32)
Review: The Broomfield family troupe - led by Aaron Broomfield - laid down a sweet series of rare groove 45s during the late 70s, this Keb Darge-championed 45" from 79 (originally on Taurus) being one of the most popular. With its high energy, slick keys and sparkling percussion "Stop" sits slap in the middle of disco and boogie while "Doin' It Our Way" hits with much more of a jazz funk feel with bold harmonies hitting hard on the chorus. Previously spotted passing for L400 - it's another expert democratisation by AOTN.

I'm Gonna Miss Ya
  1. Aaron Broomfield - "I'm Gonna Miss Ya" (4:32)
  2. Broomfield Corporate Jam - "Does Anybody Really Know" (4:01)
Review: For their latest trip into "in-demand collector cuts" territory, Edinburgh's Athens of the North shines a light on the work of obscure Miami artist Aaron Broomfield. "I'm Gonna Miss You" originally appeared on Mountain Records in 1981 and has become something of a sought-after record in recent years. It's a brilliant chunk of rubbery Miami synth-funk rich in mazy synthesizer solos, elastic slap bass and the urgent hustle of P-funk. Over on side B you'll find the cosmic soul bump of "Does Anybody Really Know", which appears to a previously unreleased vocal workout featuring some deliciously fuzzy electric guitar solos.

Review: This is a first official repress of "Il Veliero" after the original 1982 12" release. It is an all-time Italo classic that is presented in full glory with the original sleeve and 12 minute extended mix that will carry you away on a slightly cheesy but easy to love disco groove full of warm sunny breeze and carefree melodic bliss. Two lesser known cuts take up the b-side - the playful percussive disco funk of "Welcome To The Party" and uptempo licks and sliding hi hats of "Dancin' On Town Square." Summer, where you at?

  3. Uber Man (5:36)
  4. Tibetan Dance (5:02)
Review: The sixth volume in Toy Tonics occasional "Tonic Edits" series comes courtesy of label regulars COEO, a Munich-based duo who previously proved their edit credentials via a tasty 12" on Razor-N-Tape. This collection is arguably even better than its predecessor and sees them take their rusty scalpels to a quartet of Japanese disco-pop tracks from the 1980s. There's much to admire, from the sleazy electrofunk grooves, bold pianos and sparkling pianos of "Matchbox" (A2) and the slap-bass propelled boogie goodness of the Teena Marie-esque "Uber Man" (B1), to the freestyle influenced synth-pop bounce of cheery closing cut "Tibetan Dance". Arguably best of all, though, is lead cut "Japanese Woman", a bi-lingual disco song rich in rubbery bass, Chic style guitars and sparkling synthesizer flourishes.

Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. The instrumental is just as feel good and uplifting. What a 7" this is.

Review: Given that Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan is the man at the controls, it's perhaps unsurprising that this surprise debut full-length from little known Canadian chanteuse Jessy Lanza drips with smooth, synthesized sweetness. Packed with Greenspan's trademark melancholic, Metro Area-ish synths, but built around Lanza's fragile, otherworldly vocals, Pull My Hair Back is a contender for the best leftfield pop album of the year. Variously touching on synthesized R&B, deep boogie, sparse torch songs (see the sublime title track) and starbust wonkiness (the beautifully off-kilter "As If"), Lanza and Greenspan have delivered an impeccable, unassuming delight. Recommended.

We certainly are glad that the music on The Unreleased Traxx finally saw the light of day. Review: Those who keep an eye on the world of download-only edit releases should be familiar with Lego Edit, an Italian remix artist who has released more EPs this year than you've had hot dinners. Here he launches the "UFO Edits" series, joining forces with long-serving selector and Balearic-minded producer Fabrice for two of the three edits. Their joint efforts are impressive, particularly the lolloping intergalactic jazz-meets-dub-disco weirdness of "Destroy Moonbase" (though the low-slung, Hammond-heavy throb of "Shado N-ergy" is not far behind). Also worth checking is solo Lego Edit revision "On The Way", a loopy disco-house affair full of cut-up horn solos and Chic style grooves.

  1. Do I Do (7:15)
  2. Do I Do (instrumental) (6:32)
Review: It's fair to say that Maurice's McGee's "Do I Do" is something of an Italo-disco classic. It was initially released back in 1983 on Full Time Records, and featured the man himself - seemingly an invented alias for a local Genova singer recruited by the prolific Studio G production team - telling a tale of missed parties and late night opportunities over a backing track that sits somewhere between the all-arpeggio grooves of Italian disco and the slick, synth-heavy warmth of '83 New York boogie. On this timely reissue, the extended vocal version (remastered to sound extra loud) is accompanied by the arguably superior Instrumental take, which wisely highlights clipped disco guitars and the superb, synth-heavy groove.

Review: It would be fair to say that "The Adventure Of Kohsuke Kindaichi" is a "cult album". While many will have heard snippets of some of its tracks in hip-hop tracks and via dusty disco re-edits (a number have been given the scalpel treatment in the past), few outside of Japan have been able to get the album since it was released way back in 1977. The premise is odd - composer Kentaro Haneda created the disco and jazz-funk set as a soundtrack to a series of detective novels - but the music is superb: a zany but hugely entertaining mixture of nods to various soundtrack styles underpinned by killer disco grooves and swirling orchestral movements. We'd heartily recommend checking out the clips ASAP.

Review: Hit makers Rodgers and Edwards' mammothly influential Chic songs enjoy one of the finest curatorial salutes from UK disco's most discerning torch-bearer/creator Dave Lee. Digging deep into his vaults and unearthing some of the best homages, references and blatant covers, Negro join the dots and delivers some rarities you may have never heard before. Get lost in the music of She's shiny guitar strumming "Easy Money", freak out to Charanga 76's "Good Times" and get lucky with Van Jones's "Not About That"... Everyone knows about the hits and influence, most of us know how important a role Chic played in sample culture but Negro has gone the extra mile to celebrate some of the lesser known references Chic have had over the years. Freaking great.

  3. Love For Days (Motez remix) (5:34)
Review: Given the serious disco-house credentials of '90s survivor Boris Dlugosch and contemporary nu-disco chops of hyped outfit Purple Disco Machine, you'd expect "Love For Days" to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with Purple Disco Machine's extended mix - nestled on the B-side - offering the perfect mixture of strong diva vocals (provided by Karen Harding), sweeping disco orchestration and modern disco-house trickery. Arguably the best version, though, comes from Masters at Work legend Kenny Dope, whose fluid rework utilizes looser, live-sounding percussion, far more orchestration and all manner of original disco-era references. Motez completely flips the script on B2, serving up a skipping, Champagne sipping version that brilliantly joins the dots between disco and two-step UK garage.

Review: When it comes to reworking million-selling singles and gargantuan hits, there's nobody better than Frenchman-in-London The Reflex. Further proof arrives via his latest sneaky two-tracker, which offers multi-track re-edits of two sing-along favourites. On side A he delivers a heavy disco revision of party classic "Copacabana" (yep, the Barry Manilow-written banger) that turns it into a breathless and sleazy workout fit for peak-time dancefloors. Over on side B he gets to work on disco-soul classic "I'll Be Around", underpinning the orchestration and repeated chorus vocal ("whenever you call me, I'll be there" etc) with house style beats for added oomph.

  2. O C Tolbert - "Give It To Glory" (5:46)
Review: With Cordial Recordings, LoveVinyl's Roual Galloway is doing a terrific job in making rare, sought-after tracks available to a wider audience. In truth, you'll struggle to find a more rare and expensive gospel killer than The Tolbert Family Singers' "Ride The Gospel Train", a drum machine driven chunk of gospel-boogie with crunchy funk guitars that's been changing hands for hundreds of pounds online. Andrew Weatherall is a fan and it's easy to see why. Flipside "Give it Glory", a solo cut by Tolbert Family patriarch Brother OC Tolbert, is a sweeter and breezier slab of gospel-soul that has never before been released on vinyl. Two killer cuts for the price of one: nice one, Roual!

"offDaW@ll" takes us back to Jacko's golden era with a subtle raise in tempo, pitch and a cool sense of momentum that breaks down to the vocals in an interesting and attention grabbing way. Review: It would be fair to say that Winston is nowhere near as well known as some of the record collectors who've compiled volumes in the "Under The Influence" series (think Nick The Record, Sean P and Red Greg), but it seems his crates are every bit as deep. Check, for example, the unashamedly celebratory, slap-bass propelled disco-funk of Doug Payne and Polygon's "Holiday", the heady, high-octane disco thrills of Expose's "I Just Wanna Dance With You", the low-slung early funk-rap headiness of Jungle Band's "Jungleland (Part 2)" and the wickedly percussive salsa-disco heaviness of Suave's "Salsa Gon Gitcha". In other words, it's a killer collection of top-notch cuts that you'll never have heard before. What's not to like?

  1. Looking Up To You (3:58)
  2. (Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love (3:58)
Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.
