Midnight Riot Volume 9
Cat: MRV 011. Rel: 23 Sep 15
Aashton - "Pride" (6:13)
Peza - "Black Gold" (6:23)
Fabiolous Barker - "The Paradise" (6:37)
Rayko - "The Jam" (5:55)
Review: Yam Who?'s Midnight Riot is back with another volume of funky, party starting edits, so come and get your fix. Aashton's "Pride" samples the diva vocals of you know who on this smooth and soulful number. Peza's "Black Gold" is pure classic disco, reminiscent of Salsoul, possibly? Fabiolous Barker's "The Paradise" has that retro and Balearic vibe that fans of labels like Love On The Rocks and Efficient Space will certainly dig. "The Jam" by Rayko is a re-edit of you guessed it: Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam".

Afrobot - "Turkish Dreams" (5:18)
Matt Moroder - "Yasemin Endless Edit" (6:42)
Potentiometer - "Turkish Sauerkraut" (7:05)
Afrobot - "Kalk Gidelim" (5:46)
Review: The success of Holland's AM edit imprint lies in its founders' desire to offer up on-point scalpel reworks of thoroughly obscure but inspired tracks from around the world. Naturally, there's plenty of evidence to support this argument on the label's sixth hand-stamped 12". AM regular Afrobot kicks things off via "Turkish Dream", a fine tweak of a boisterous, Hammond-heavy chunk of glassy-eyed late '60s dream pop, before Matt Moroder gets busy with a deliciously low-slung slab of Middle Eastern post-punk dub disco. On the flip, Potentiometer rearranges a seriously heavy Turkish funk-rock workout - think Rare Earth guitar riffs, sweaty drumming and eyes-closed solos - while Afrobot takes is further into psychedelic territory via the mind-altering, Moog-boasting brilliance of "Kalk Gidelim".

Futurism
Futurism (12")
Cat: ISM 010X. Rel: 06 May 11
Alena - "Changes" (Ron Basejam remix)
Yam Who? - "I'm In Love" (feat Natasha Watts)
PBR Streetgang - "J2ThaB"
Brothers Young - "Inferno"
Review: Yam Who?'s ISM label come through with a four track slice of disco centric Futurism, featuring the man Yam himself alongside PBR Streetgang and Ron Basejam. It's the latter who takes the lead with a remix of Alena's "Changes" that sees her sultry vocal teased by a most excellent of analogue synth leads that splurges brilliantly across the crisp mid tempo chug. Yam Who? teams up with vocalist Natasha Watts for the similarly bottom heavy bump of "I'm In Love" which has a certain warehouse appeal to it. On the flip, PBR pay respect to the godfather of soul James Brown with the gritty flex of "J2thaB" with the sadly departed Mr Brown strangely sounding at times like he wants to go to Tesco. We always took him for a Waitrose man, but regardless this is probably the track you'll reach for most! Finally Brothers Young do their thing to a Trammps classic, with little more than the bassline retained. Big tip!

Phil Disco - "Never Gonna Leave You" (5:46)
Phil Disco - "Disco Ipno" (5:18)
C Da Afro - "The Choice" (5:50)
Review: 'Disco Tape', which launched via a must-check 12" back in August 2023, os Sound Exhibitions' multi-artist EP series. This second volume is a similarly action-packed affair that gleefully blurs the boundaries between reworks, re-edits and sample-heavy original productions. Alexny kicks things off with two sun-soaked treats - the percussive and warming tropical disco tribute 'Caribbean Breeze' and the sax solo-sporting dancefloor shuffle of 'Bada Boom' - before Paride Pavone rounds off side A with the jazzy disco-house celebration of 'In Key'. Phil Disco impresses on side B with two killer cuts (the funky bass-propelled disco heaviness of 'Never Gonna Leave You' and the swirling jazz-funk-house bump of 'Disco Ipno', while disco-funk specialist C Da Afro rounds things off in fine style via the insatiable grooves and fluttering flute solos of 'The Choice'.

AROUND7 - "Live At Filmore" (5:31)
Joss Moog - "I Can't Say No" (6:36)
Paul Cut - "Heaven" (5:13)
Hatelate - "The Boogie Show" (feat Claire Lennox) (6:29)
Review: The French brat pack are back; Around7 and Joss Moog are a couple of Phil Weeks' proteges and they turn in some sweet disco edits here. They just so happen to own the label too. Around7's "Live At Fillmore" sounds so awesome; is it possibly a Moodymann/Norma Jean Bell edit? Moog's "I cant Say No" is some proper disco house deepness. On the flip, they've got some newcomers in the form of Paul Cut with "Heaven" a loopy soul-funk cut up and Hatelate with "The Boogie Show" which is pretty sweet, who did he sample on this one again? Reminiscent of "Working Nights" era Trus'me.

AZ - "Simigwado" (edit) (5:50)
Walter Ego - "Eme Nenyo" (4:33)
Philou Louzolo - "Royal Booty Funk" (6:27)
Review: Like many labels at this time of year, Banoffee Pies has decided to get into the Record Store Day spirit, delivering a limited edition, hand-stamped 10" featuring a trio of Afro-inspired cuts from their growing roster of artists. There's naturally much to admire, not least the deliciously bass-heavy "Simigwado (Eidt)" by Az, a heavy Afrobeat rework that gets the right balance between the restless throb of house music and the vibrancy of the producer's source material. Walter Ego impresses, too, with the cowbell-laden Highlife shuffle of "Eme Nenyo", while Philou Louzolo steals the show with the Clavinet-heavy Afro-disco goodness of his superb "Royal Booty Funk".

Geffen (12")
Cat: COMEME 013. Rel: 05 Apr 12
Barnt - "Geffen"
Dany F - "Chalole Batata"
Christian S - "The Power Of Now"
Philipp Gorbachev & Hugo Capablanca - "Berlin Esta Helado" (feat La Muerte)
Review: Four very different interpretations of house music prevail on Power. First up is Geffen, whose dubby, staccato drums, bursts of percussive noise and ominous bass provide the backdrop for a series of frequency-shifting tonal blips. Danny F opts for a different path on "Chalole Batata", where a pulsing bassline and heavy drums steer the arrangement into an ethnic chanting break down. Christian S's contribution is tracky and designed specifically for DJs; centring on rolling, insistent drums and mangled filters, its crashing cymbals enhance its impetus. Finally, the trio of Philipp Gorbachev, Hugo Capablanca and La Muerte deliver the deranged vocals and noisy voodoo groove of "Berlan Esta Helado" - which sounds like vintage Chicken Lips on acid.

People's Choice - "Jam Jam Jam (All Night Long)" (A Tom Moulton mix) (7:42)
Teddy Pendergrass - "I Don't Love You Anymore" (A Tom Moulton mix) (8:46)
Lou Rawls - "See You When I Git There" (A Tom Moulton mix) (9:39)
Review: During the latter stages of the "Philly Soul" era, New York remixer Tom Moulton delivered a string of inspired, DJ friendly reworks for the Philadelphia International label. For proof, check this fine selection of classic Moulton mixes for the storied imprint. Check first his version of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over", which he brilliantly teases out and increases in intensity over nine spellbinding minutes. The funkier flex of People's Choice's "Jam, Jam, Jam (All Night Long)" is a sweaty, low-down treat, while the Teddy Pendergrass rework is a soaring disco classic in the Philly Soul style. Best of all, though, is the string-drenched disco celebration that is his mix of Lou Rawls' "See You When I Git There".

Thelxis (12")
Cat: B2RW 001. Rel: 09 Oct 23
Thelxis (extended vocal) (8:29)
Thelxis (instrumental) (8:10)
Review: B2 Recordings is a label run by Greek talent Bengoa as a platform to offer up his own diverse sounds. Here he serves up a new single featuring Pan that is sublime, seductive and deep. The vocals you will recognise from a classic pop hit but here they get all resung in an even more libidinous fashion. The drums roll, and the percussion is loose, and bright but soft chord stabs heighten the mood. Flip it over for an instrumental version of 'Thelxis' that is all about the late-night grooves. Two stylish sounds for romantic moments.

Bijou - "Twilight"
De Pin Up Club - "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep"
Peet Need - "Here Comes The Arps"
Impresa Gottardo - "Trafori"
Review: Otto Kraanen's Bordello A Parigi label are on a roll right now, with no less than ten records issued since the turn of the year! One of those was the inauguration of the Riviera Disco series, overseen by Riviera Disco Club selector Julien Tavernier, which got off to a fine internationally flavoured start earlier this month with contributions from Disco Sigaretta, Dilemma and Sauroid founder DJ Gio MC-505. Volume two looks to be just as exotic in sound and international in flavour with Belgian producer Bijou sharing space with cuts from Dutch pair De Pin Up Club and Peet Need and Impresa Gottardo, the new collaboration between Ajello's Philippe Taverio and Jean Paul Lazarre. In need of pumping italo and synth heavy disco? This 12" will satisfy those cravings and then some.

C Da Afro - "Nothing But The Funk" (6:33)
Juan Soto - "All Is Full Of Love" (5:10)
Review: Super Spicy's Super Spicy Recipe series is back with a sixth mouthwatering offering and once again it's a super hot outing of party-ready house and disco sounds. First up is the irresistibly colourful disco charm of Birdee with the freewheeling 'Underground' and its groove-infused piano. Label boss Monsieur Van Pratt then adds his own spin to a rare groove classic with a lung-busting soul vocal and Pato Watson is in edit mode as he tweaks 'Ella Fue' to perfection. Italian don Paul Older brings some funky jazz fusion sounds to his steamy 'Turkish Lights, C. Da Afro keeps it a party with his 'Nothing But The Funk' and Mexican Juan Soto slips into a more deep and loved-up funk-house vibe on 'All Is Full Of Love'.

Black Devil/Unit 4 - "An Other Skin (Days Of Blackula)"
Black Devil/Black Mustang - "Constantly No Respect (The Phenomena Of)"
Review: Black Devil Disco Club returns to action on LoEB with "Ride Again", a collection of mixes from his "In Dub" album. First up is the Prins Thomas mix of "On Just Foot", a chugging Italo disco groover led by a rolling arpeggiated b-line, quirky analogue stabs, vocoder vocal hits and wicked conga-laden beats. Proper floor-pleasing Italo workout. Next we have the Unit 4 mix of "An Other Skin", more b-line driving space disco with dark sounds and huge synth lines. Last but not least is the Black Mustang mix of "Constantly No Respect", a hard-hitting percussive jam exploring the darker side of the Italo universe.

One Base
Precious Beast
Lost Afternoon
Review: Strictly Rhythm ledge Peter Black revisits the Black Order project - and for those of you unfamiliar, Electropolis go so far as to include a printed one sheet that describes the reasoning and history behind a series of releases that began in 2005. Indeed, this is the first Electropolis release since 2007, and contains three raw compositions based on ideas Black had between 1991 and 2005. In period since then, the technology that powers what we call edits has changed exponentially. However, it's clear that the ideas that go into "One Base" could never be replicated using Ableton or similar software - a dizzying dissection of The Clash at their most ubiquitous, the version on this twelve is a 2011 master of a test pressing that did the rounds in 1991! It literally thumps off the needle and the bassline will cause chaos in any dancefloor situation. The flipside synth boombap take on Beastie Boys sounds oddly out of key but retains an off kilter charm whilst "Lost Afternoon" plunders the same little fluffy source as The Orb. It is however the A Side that demands your attention.

Mouna Power (4:28)
Mouna Power (dance dub) (5:52)
Review: Ever-reliable funk fusionist Bosq has scored another hit here, this time with the help of Favourite Recordings regular Pat Kalla, a talented French poet and singer. 'Mouna Power' is another great example of Bosq's ability to successfully meld together elements of Afrobeat, Afro-Cuban music and tropical grooves, adding layers of colourful instrumentation (bass, keys, horns, guitars and so on). The excellent original version comes backed with a longer, slightly tougher but no less warming and kaleidoscopic 'Dancefloor Dub'. It contains most of the vocals, more percussion and a greater role for the killer bassline and is probably our pick of the mixes

Joey Jojo's Temptation
Baby Blue
Bonus Beats
Review: Munich label Permanent Vacation continue their fine run of form, pairing a label stalwart with a relative newcomer with excellent results. Bostro Pesopeo has featured on many a Permanent Vacation release since his debut back in 2008, whilst Pional may have only recently joined the PV canon, though his work presents a further strengthening in the bond between the label and Hivern Discs. Yes is notable for two things; the multi-faceted approach to the music and Pional's hitherto unrecorded singing voice (soon to be heard on John Talabot's album for Permanent Vacation). Along with the swinging, twilight 2-step future boogie of the title track, the duo veer through 80s tinged new wave and more familiar kraut indebted house music (the excellent "Baby Blue"), and what really impresses is the attention to detail and organic feel across each track.

The grooves are laced with soulful vocals, churchy chords and big strings that make for grand architecture and grander feelings of joy. Mark Brickman & Yam Who? open with a vocal gem that cannot help but bring a smile, while Wayfaring Strangers pump it up a little more with some funky disco house before Platinum City get you locked in a nice loose, long legged groove that is resplendent with lush keys and big vocal turns. Nelly Wilson - "Trapped & Confused" (4:47)
Pierre Pressure - "Love & Beyond" (5:58)
Review: The Dessert Island Discs series continues with yet more arch remixes from across the disco and boogie spectrum. Bubbles The Pimp kicks off the A side with a tasteful treatment of Gil Scott Heron's "Winter In America," which gets rustled up into a sweet and sassy house number with a cheeky acid b-line underneath. Nelly Wilson whips up a storm on the tightly clipped, peak time-oriented "Trapped & Confused". Pierre Pressure's "Love & Beyond" takes it easy on the B side with plenty of fluttering synth wobbles to offset the choppy funk of the guitar - it's a cosmically enhanced floor burner to get you all astral under the collar.

Will Buck & Prtmnto - "Do It To Me" (Parallax remix) (7:31)
Review: Ever since Will Buckley and PRTMNTO debuted on last year's Lovetrax EP on Whiskey Disco Small Batch, we've been eagerly anticipating the duo's first collaborative EP. Title track "Soul Sides" - one of three cuts mixed by label boss Pontchartrain - is a breezy and positive affair, with sultry disco strings and attractive, delay-laden riffs slowly rising above a loopy, deep disco-house groove. "Liif 1982" is a more obviously energetic affair blessed with rubbery slap bass and some seriously seductive synthesizers, while "Do It To Me" is a jazzier and jaunty affair that subtly doffs a cap to both sleazy disco and jazz-funk. Parallax brilliantly strips back the latter track, adding sweet jazz guitars on a superbly summery and laidback interpretation.

Each of these four cuts are well-polished deep house cuts the shimmer and shake with the perfect balance of jazz, soul and disco. Native content for the Russian label comes from Buzz Compass (bubbling bass, dreamy chord swoops and a killer loop) and Petr Serkin (filtered bliss that builds and builds). Nnatn - "Magia Du Samba" (7:01)
Review: Some V/As are dubious in their length, seeming to span both EP and mini-compilation length in equal measure, but not this one, which definitely seems to know what it's about. Moiss Music are no stranger to this format, here presenting their second vinyl release 'Watermelon Jam' after the first EP-length four tracker, 'Strawberry Jam'. Nu-disco, funk and house is the name of the game once again, and the tone is set by C Da Afro's 'That Funky Horn' via sample-filtering soul and raucous trumpets. The vocal cuts on this record are among its highlights; Disco Endeavours' 'So High' carries Brandy-esque chirps along a funking house backdrop, while the best of the bunch - 'Feelin's Mutual' by Pookie Knights - channels Carmen or Sylvester in its syrupy refrains and jet-set arps. Even a samba house bit closes it off - a swell all-rounder.

Review: Killer Endless Flight 12" debut for the Creative Swing Alliance duo of Pablo Valentine and Steven Joyce Ames - two names that should be familiar to the deep house cognoscenti! Valentine runs the MCDE label, while Ames has been responsible for drops on Compost, Soultronik and Jazzmin, though together as Creative Swing Alliance they're on another level. As lead track "Assado" slips into action, those thick bass drum kicks are soon consumed by a richly detailed procession of textures, dub laden vocal edits and percussion that collectively glower with resplendent energy. Alongside this, the detuned jazz thonk of "Everybody Stand Around" gets a much needed vinyl release after featuring on Endless Flight's fifth edition of I'm Starting To Feel OK, while the flip has Valentino going solo for the excellent, hand clap laden beatdown of "Give It To Me".

It contains two alternate, previously unheard versions of remixes that originally appeared on the label's celebratory box set earlier in the year. Chicago deep house legend Larry Heard is at the controls on the A-side, delivering a deep, dubby, spacey and musically rich "Fingers Deep Club Mix" of Jack Cutter and David Harks' Balearic shuffler "Serpent Strut". While naturally superb, it's the flipside Emperor Machine dub of Paqua's "Ruby Running Faker" that's really got us in a spin. It's a tough act to follow, but old pals Dicky Trisco and Peza are more than up to the job on this delayed follow-up. "Clean Up The Line" makes great use of crunchy, guitar-laden loops from Sweet's "Funk It Up", combining these with bouncy house drums and occasional bursts of electronic effects to create a strutting dancefloor banger. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".

A La French 1987-1992: The Balearic Sessions Part 1
Cecilia Noah - "Yuku Mon Ukulele" (Party mix) (7:06)
Alpha Blondy - "Ye Ye" (club Suite Movement 1 & 2) (10:31)
Gerard Blanc - "Dis Tout Bas Dis" (remix club) (7:35)
Princesse Erika - "Calomnie" (club mix) (8:41)
Review: A La French 1987-1992 is a new series from long time dance veteran Dimitri From Paris. It finds him digging deep into his vaults and returning with some of his earlier edit work, often with a Balearic feel over deep house drums and 80s disco vibes. The first in the three part series is a real smoother, with sexy and steamy sax lines on 'Yuku Mon Ukulele' bringing a late night feel. There is a slow motion party tune from Alpha Blondy that runs deep, Gerard Blanc then gets a little more upbeat but still with plenty of soulful and loved up vocal vibes and Princesse Erika closes with lush piano stabs and synth strings that light up your heart.

MB Edit - "Got The Feeling" (De Gama edit) (6:24)
Review: Samosa Records makes a big stride into 2024 with their first offering of the year in the form of the intriguingly named (Re)-Funk+Head EP. Crafted by De Gama himself, all four tracks have undergone careful selection and re-editing. The A-Side kicks off with Dirtyelements & Drunkdrivers' hypnotic club anthem 'Keep It Coming', a blend of bass, keys, and vocals that seductively engage the senses. De Gama follows with 'Some More', a flute-infused funk bomb that ignites primal urges. On the B-Side, Paul Older's 'Sax Francisco' serves up a tropical sorbet of a tune, while MB Edit's 'Got The Feeling' delivers a relentless disco journey. '(Re)-Funk+Head' really embodies Samosa's commitment to pushing things on.

Marflow (aka Wolfram) and New York's Princess Superstar for a rolling italo disco tune and Cheap artist Elin did a superb remix. This is more smack disco for those who can't get enough of it. There is a lot of bad taste involved in this record but it works like fuck. The hype has started but as it is limited to 300 copies in a nice colourful disco sleeve, you should act now. Hit!

Elaste EP 1: Slow Motion Disco (Originals From The Cosmic Era)
Clive Stevens & Brainchild - "Mystery Man" (remix)

Love International - "Dance On The Groove (& Do The Funk)"
Review: Fantastic EP with three rare originals from Italy's Cosmic Disco era (early 80s), selected by DJ Mooner. Incl. tracks by Clive Stevens & Brainchild, Peru and Love International. For fans of Daniele Baldelli & DJ Harvey. File under Balearic/Cosmic/Futureboogie/Spacedisco...DJ Mooner: "It's time for a new style in dance music I think. Both minimal house and AC/DC riffs over electro clash beats make me leave parties. Since two years I slip back in time and get new inspiration from Italy's 1970s and 1980s dance music seperated from Italodisco: Afro Cosmic sound, also known as "balearic". Here is a preview EP of the forthcoming CD/2x12" of original tunes and rare tracks."Clive Stevens & Brainchild "Mystery Man" Remix - Highly sought after 12" by "new spirit in jazz" legend Clive Stevens, rarely seen on Ebay...Beautiful female vocals over an outstanding Disco track with unusual percussion breaks. Peru "Oriental" · A production by the dutch synthesizergroup from 1983, inspired by playful japanese productions such as Yellow Magic. Another track from the album went No.1 in Austria. Later Rob Papen became sound designer for EMU. Love International "Dance on the groove(and do the funk)" · This was a superhit in 1980 at the original Disco Cosmic in Italy. Amazing, Bohannon-influenced, heavy funk danceproduction. Special 6 minutes dance version. The Story of the italian Cosmic sound in 2 minutes: Italy, 1976 In a luxurious discotheque on the Italian Adriatic coast. Every weekend, two American DJs called Bob and Tom play records that are big in the clubs of their hometown New York City. Bob and Tom are the resident DJs at the "Baia degli Angeli", a huge club with various floors, fountains, swimming pools and lots of glitz and jetset people. Two years later, the Baia closed due to a drug raid, and Daniele Baldelli, inspired by the "Baia Sound" shortly after starts DJing in the new club "Cosmic", situated at the Lago di Garda in Northern Italy. Baldelli does not only play funk, soul and disco records. His style is unique: songs are mixed perfectly in an super slow tempo of 80-105 BPM. The music is like an LSD trip: African choirs on 45 RPM, percussion solos, bolero with delay effects, 12" singles on 33 instead of 45. A whole wave of DJs and clubs has been by Daniele Baldelli. And soon the whole of Northern Italy calls this sound "Cosmic Music". Nowadays, producers such as Lindstrom, Prins Thomas or labels like Gomma and Eskimo have been deeply inspired and try to create dance tracks that have a similar atmosphere.

Review: While hardly a "Holy Grail"all bar a few people didn't know it existed until recently, D.J Never Sleep's sole single, the private press gem 'Teorema', can certainly be described as "buried treasure". It was reportedly the work of some experienced Italian producers, though its' sound is all Spanish guitar solos, early house-meets-Latin freestyle beats, joyous Piano riffs and evocative female vocals, it is pure formative Balearic house. This Thank You reissue not only showcases the original EP's two leading mixes (track two here, the more chugging and synth bass-sporting rework, is the pick), but also a never-released, effects-laden 'Never Sleepy Beats' drum took, plus versions in Spanish (B1) and French (B2).

Review: For their second 12", recently launched edits imprint Wall of Fame has assembled a crack team of internationally renowned edit fiends. Australian Dr Packer delivers a bustling house interpretation of Instant Funk's synth-laden Paradise Garage five "Just Because You're Mine", before Evil Smarty gives Tata Vega's brilliant disco classic "Get It Up For Love" a similarly house-friendly renovation. Flip for Fingerman's looser, party-starting "Boogie Change Up" - all dubbed-out horns, sparkling synths, sweet vocals and extended drum breaks - and "Let It Go", a curious but rather impressive R&B cut-job from Brooklun-based P-Sol. All four tracks sound like tried-and-tested killers for those who prefer their disco on the housier end of the spectrum.

Review: Midnight Riot's recently-released Riot In Lagos compilation paid tribute - in some style, we should add - to the enduring influence of African music on contemporary dance culture. This sampler 12" gathers together four of the most sought-after cuts from the digital-only set. Drop Out Orchestra kick things off with the fuzzy guitars, glistening solos, relentless handclaps and bongo-heavy drum rhythms of Candido tribute "Jin Go La", before FSQ deftly fuse Afro-disco and electrofunk on dancefloor stomper "Shaking My Damn Head". Drrtyhaze - "Get Down To Your Body"
Mankind - "Marimba On Toast"
Pete Herbert & Golden Fleece - "Interstella"
Review: After countless releases stretching back to a debut drop from Greg Wilson back in 2006, the classy Redux imprint switch up tactics with the first in a series of various artist Pick & Mix EPs. It's a fine debut too, that stretches across the disco globe from Australia to New York via London. Proceedings commence with NYC duo Drrtyhaze, no strangers to Redux, who hog the A Side with the elongated disco house delight of "Get Down To Your Body". It is however overshadowed by the contribution from Mankind, last seen on 3rd Strike and claiming to be "beamed to Atlanta from a passing interstellar cruiser" and now seemingly residing in London. Taking on the same Alexander O Neal classic that was recently reworked to such devastating effect by Maxxi Soundsystem might seem foolish, but the Mankind treatment on "Marimba On Toast" swerves down some demented Maurice Fulton path and is totally different in execution. Finally, Pete Herbert teams up with Melbourne's Golden Fleece on the bumping slap bass odyssey "Inter Stella".

The people behind the festival have decided to spread their wings, and here launch their offshoot label with a little help from Eric Duncan, Pete Herbert and Tricky Disco. The former kicks things off with "Nerve Control", a chugging fusion of Italo and analogue house that's reminiscent of his collaborations with Rhythm Odyssey on Golf Channel. Flip for Herbert and Trisco's "Disco De Choclate" a kind of Balearic disco/reggae disco hybrid that makes excellent use of punchy horn samples. Both tracks are undeniably "floor-friendly", and sound like they could generate serious heat over the next few months.

Review: Hot'N'Spicy's eponymous series hits a fifth volume here and with a brilliant neon pink vinyl to boot. This one kicks off with downtempo disco master Eddie C and his funky, rugged, low slung looper 'Big City Freak' before Paul Older ups the energy with his old school disco samples and long legged drums all encourage lots of loose and fluid body movement. Eddie C ignites proceedings with a chubby electro boogie fused jam that pops and rolls with big disco bubbles and obese synth bass. Review: Africa Seven's A7 Edits offshoot has already proved to be one of the better re-edit series around, primarily because they consistently employ some of the best re-editors in the business, offering them the opportunity to select tracks they want to rework from the parent label's vast catalogue of licensed cuts. This edition - the seventh EP to date - is another action-packed winner. Rising star Alan Dixon delivers a lightly tooled-up, all-action revision of Gyedu Bley Amadou's tropical disco classic 'Highlife', before Barcelona-based John Talabot and Pional re-frame Ekambi Brilliant's 'Afrika Afrika' as a kind of Afro-post-punk/dub disco mash-up. Over on side B, Escapade dances through a bouncy disco-house take on Pasteur Lappe's 'Na Real Sekele Fo Ya', while Jacques Renault expertly rearranges Michael Amara's Afro-disco-funk staple 'New Bell'.

Review: France's Unlimited Love label has quickly established itself as a consistent source of obscure material drawn from disco and boogie's quirkier margins. This third volume is every bit as tidy as its predecessors. While some may already be familiar with Ben's 1982 boogie-funk gem "I Would Have To Be A Fool" due to its inclusion of a number of crate-digging compilations, the same can't be said for the rest of the material. Electric Nightmare's "Garden of Delight" is a sublime chunk of spacey progressive rock/electronic disco fusion from 1979, while Panache's "Get Down (To The Sweet Music)" has long been regarded as a "must have" by collectors of little-known disco. Sunstreet's breezy and positive "Lovin" - another lesser-known cut from 1979 - completes another essential package.

Review: Italian label Hell Yeah Recordings transmit yet another fine helping of Enzo Elia edits under the superbly named Balearic Gabba Edits umbrella, with the Berlin based Italian turning his attention to the works of Psycho Team and Endangered People. First up is Elia's pumping, Hi NRG self styled Barini edit of "Hypno", Psycho Team's late 80s Italian New Beat favourite; the mid point moment where some deft scratching signals a change in rhythmic emphasis is nothing less than thrilling. It's complemented nicely by the subsequent revision of "Psycho" from the same act which begins in calming, contemplative mood before a frazzled synth line bursts through with dramatic effect. On the flip Elia drops a killer Ultra Dub take on the Endangered Species track "So I Want to Say (Ta Ta Ta)" which unfolds like one thick, analogous tease.

By focusing largely on the edits-not-edits sound - where disco and electrofunk meets deep house - he's managed to catch the zeitgeist of a scene that remains hugely popular. This 12" culls four certified jams from last year's third Midnight Riot compilation, with Ex Friendly, Peza, Panorama and Inkswel representing the delay-laden disco dubbiness, Tiger & Woods-ish disco-house and starlight nu-boogie sound either side of the wax. Beachcombing (with Gabriel Gurnsey & Nik Colk Void)
C Side (with Dominic Butler)
Review: The unlikely collaboration between London-based industrial synth act Factory Floor and cult New York disco producer Peter Gordon finds a perfect home on the eminently wide ranging Optimo Music label with the long promised Beachcombing 12". This release apparently originated in heart warming circumstances when Factory Floor's Nik Void penned a letter to Gordon expressing her admiration for his distinguished work. From here, a blossoming partnership was struck up with Void sending Gordon a track which he then overdubbed with saxophones and analogue and digital synths before fellow Factory Floorer Gabe Gurnsey added his own rhythmic input to the gloriously sanguine 15 minutes of trippy cosmic psychedelics. Not to be outdone, Factory Floor's other member Dominic Butler is involved on the flipside track "C Side" which in a bizarro world could be the soundtrack to a Baywatch reboot. It's great to see Factory Floor collaborating with such a legend and demonstrating a capacity for music other than thunderous, industrial repetition.

Emotional Response's Timothy J Fairplay kicks things off with "Off The Rails", an expectedly dark and tense piece of Carpenter-esque synth, while LWE writer Per Bojsen-Moller delivers the atmospheric techno of "Staying Late", whose rippling analogue bassline gives way to an unexpectedly funky breakdown. On the flip, Steve Cook's "Noah's Arp" takes things a Balearic house direction with its thick, filtered analogue textures adding some psychedelic colour to its mid-tempo grooves, while Emile Strunz's "Magnetic" adds some acid flavour to its low-swung, vocoder saturated Italo swagger.
