Review: Twilight is the latest piece by long time DJ, producer and remixer, Dominic Dawson. The Japanese label Flower, has released this single to 7" complete with a remix for the second side. The title track is a catchy and funky house track that while the remix is a bit more Balearic and beachy. Both versions have their place in any house setlist and will set the tone for any eclectic DJ set. With the DJing background Dominic has, he is a great guide to setting the mood with music. Like the title artwork suggests, this is perfect music to watch the sun go down to.

Review: Drivetrain and Melodymann hail from Detroit and Belgium respectively and together the've cooked up an incredibly affecting quad of tunes which we now hear pressed to wax via Soiree. An overarching homage to the classically 'slapdash' or lackadaisical feel of Chicago and Detroit house abounds, as the likes of 'Music Got Me' and 'Keep It Movin' work in the very same janky shuffles that would hear the latter ends of those genres bleed into US garage and come with palette-cleansing aperitifs in the form of vocal samples from various soul sources. The Italian label has got a new VA EP arriving at the same time as this second volume of its African series. The second volume is another fresh one with an array of artists kicking off with Vincent Galgo who brings some raw percussive energy to 'J'ngolo'. Matalo!'s 'Zaire' gets more down and dirty with some rugged rhythms and Leslie Lello's 'Alcyone' has a joyous feel thanks to the big horns. It's De Gama's 'ETA' which then shuts down things with some Afro-vocal hypnotism.

Review: Composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Frank Harris has enjoyed a long and varied career. During the 1980s, he was one of the world's most esteemed Synclavier synthesiser programmers, and also recorded extensively with singer-songwriter Maria Marquez - though it took until 2019 for much of that music to be released (on the album Echoes). This 12" boasts fresh reworks of tracks from that set. Frankie Deluxe handles side A, first delivering a deliciously slow-burn revision of 'Loveroom' - all sparse, undulating synth melodies, whispers of percussion and beautiful lead vocals - before offering up a seductively summery shuffle through the samba-seeped shuffle of 'Down By The Rio'. That track is twice more remixed on the flip. First Frakas supplies a tactile, deep Balearic nu-disco tweak, before Julian Dyne offers up a deep, dubbed-out, slow-motion house take.

Review: Jonny 5 is known for his superlative edits as well as heading up the Bahnsteig 23 label and here he returns from time out becoming a father to kick off this new one from Duca Bianco. 'Joy riding' is loopy disco-post-punk for a peak-time trip. Multi Culti man Dreems then brings the Afro party vibes with his 'Bususua' which is packed with dub fx and steeped in fun. Miserymix then throws in their Italo-licked post-disco and punk sounds on 'Adjust Your Love' before a big finale by Black Bones. They offer a deep and dubby house that has been a secret edit for a while but finally gets unveiled here to great effect as it worms its way into your brain.

Review: Machine originally dropped this mini-disco classic back in 1979 as the title cut to their album of that year, and now it's offered up again with a couple of remixes that rework the original. That original is the star of the show still here with the 1979 version still standing out. Next to that are a poising Timmy Regisford mix and acapella reprise as well as a Moplen remix and dub. This studio disco group was first formed by August Darnell who had previously been part of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and then in the 1980s went on to be part of Kid Creole And The Coconuts.

Review: Magic In Threes' latest 7" single 'Push The Rock' comes as a rather experimental funk cut, and perhaps one that could only be made today. With the ghostly vocals of fellow Tennessee vocalist Amber Woodhouse gliding across the mix, this one's a veritable funk roller, floating on the vibe rather than leaning to far into disparate sections. With the band heavily inspired by old film soundtracks, obscure hip-hop tapes and library music, we can certainly hear that an added sense of eclecticism and exploration has gone into this track, informed not merely by funk alone.

Review: The Vinyl Only label rolls on towards its 20th release here with Mar De Novo serving up the irresistible Apericena EP. 'Quantity Check' is a low-slung funker with noodling baselines and nice loose percussive rhythms under some exotic vocals. Review: Music producers do tend to be rare breeds, so it's not a surprise to hear of a label series exploring the theme. 'Uncommon Species II' is the second installment of the series from the Swiss label Phantom Island, bringing together various artists for five curios centring on oddball future disco, nu-disco, and re-edits. Highlights include the dream-pop-Balearic Kejeblos Remix of Moreeats' 'Forever Fun' - in which a rogue male vocal seductively implores us to light his fire - and CCO's 'Cyanea' - a standout acid disco number. Frankly, though, all the tracks here are unusual bangers, packed with extra additions that only a rare breed of artist could add.

Bella is the sister of Gianni with whom she often collaborates and is bother of Antonio and Saretto. She released an incredible 28 albums and this is easily the most well known.

Review: Quinn Martin's 'One More Mission' is an Italo disco classic from 1987 on the Academy label. It has become something of a cult classic which of course means that finding a decent copy on wax, at a reasonable price, is all but impossible. Enter the good folk at ZYX in Germany who have managed to fully licence this reissue on nice special blue vinyl. The original version is a mid tempo and rather heavy hearted disco chugger with deadpan male vocals and sweet female falsettos. On the flip you will also find 'Another Version' which pull apart the arrangement for subtle tweaks.

Review: Martinelli - presumably not the Brazilian one who plays in the midst of Arsenal's attack - has his classic disco gem 'Cenerentola (Cinderella)' reissued here by ZYX, a label that is well known and revered for doing just that. First up is served as an extended vocal mix that places the sentimental vocals front and centre with the sleazy sax lines also shine bight. Following the more direct Italo disco workout that is the instrumental comes a remix of the vocal that has a much more bright, tropical and steamy hot feel perfect for summer sessions and then last of all a remix of the instrumental that might be the perfect balance of everything.

Review: Dominik Marz and Radial Gaze are known groove driven sounds embellished with smart percussion, and that is just what they serve up here for Urge To Dance. Their collaborative 'Shintu' EP opens with 'Shintu', a party starter thanks to its ever more wild synth leads and chunky drum loops. 'Arkao' is another mix of bright synth theatrics with tightly sequenced arpeggios, subtle acid lines and elastic drums. Things get more freaky and acid-centric on the wonky 'Running Out' and 'Devotion' shuts down with another body-popping rhythm led by insistent stabs that never quit.

Review: Second time round for Masarima's 'Freak Like U', a sparkling 2020 tribute to post-Italo-disco proto-house, co-produced by Whodamanny and Mystic Jungle. This time round, the track has been reimagined by two stellar talents: West Coast electro stalwart Egyptian Lover and Sheffield-based bleep, hardcore and acid revivalist Luca Lozano. The former handles side A, delivering warming, dreamy, tactile and glassy-eyed electro takes (vocal and instrumental) that reinforce the track's mid 1980s inspiration. Lozano, meanwhile, opts for another kind of nostalgia altogether, first combining house tempo breaks with echo-laden elements of the original (and a couple of hazy new synth stabs) on the 'Breakbeat Guy remix', before layering up the beats on a rather lovely 'Tribal Workout Dub' featuring percussionist Karlos Moran.

Review: Emotional Rescue is at it again with another fully licensed and remastered offering, this time bringing to wax Mataya's Golddigger with a previously digital-only 'tape Mix.' Zimbabwe-born and later London-based Mataya "Clifford" Chewaluza was a core part of the vibrant West London music scene, using his songwriting, production and multi-instrumentalist skills on albums for RCA and Virgin. He also dropped a few 12"s and this one was released in 1988. It's a cult curio with crashing 80s production, disco-tinged grooves and plenty of subtle African rhythm which includes a standout dub mix from Jura Soundsystem.

The latest in its cultured Edits series finds a brace of new hot takes from Dave Mathmos. First, he offers a Contemporary Soul remix of 'Your Love' and it is the sort of heart-warning sound that brings impossible fee good energy to a park. On the flip he offers an interpretation of 'You Abandoned Me' that has a fleshy and gurgling bassline topped with aching soul vocal hooks and lush, late-night piano chords. Gorgeous stuff.

Review: Martin Matiske was discovered by DJ Hell as something of a child prodigy already deeply immersed in the history and present moment of electro and synth-pop, and by 2012 he had already released his debut album Robotermusik. This release on Bordello A Parigi revives one of the tracks from that album, 'Dimension Phantasy', and gives it a standalone release with some interesting remixes. Captain Mustache does a fine job of threading extra arpeggio sparkle into the track without derailing it, while Play Paul turns the track into his own bombastic synth-pop anthem which appears in vocal and instrumental versions.

Review: French label Nocta Numerica clocks up a quarter of a century of releases with a suitably stylish electro trip from Martin Matiske. The German claims to have been mixing records and making tapes since he was 10 and the maturity and high production values of his sound certainly back that up. There is a Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe feel to his brand of electro - deep and reflective in mood, with sleek lines and celestial chords that carry the mind and body away into the cosmos. It's timeless material that oozes class. Kudos to both label and artist.

Review: Simon Mavin is known for his work as co-writer and co-producer with Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote. Now he steps out with his own solo debut on Bastard Jazz and shows off his multi-instrumental skills. 'Good Hair Day' kick off with lush synth heavy funk and expressive melodies that are soaked in sun and sprinkled with cosmic dust. 'Only You & Me' than rides on dusty broken beats that make you want to move while the keys glow up top. Commemorating Cruisin' Records' 40th anniversary (1983-2023), 'Takes Over' is a delightful compilation scouring the exclusive vaults of its back catalogue, with label mainstay Nello Jay handling curation duties. Largely centring on the year 1985, two cuts from, 'Japanese Girl' and 'Lady Fantasy', come courtesy of Max Him, while the likes of 'For Your Sweet Information' by PJ Marcus, 'In Your Eyes' by Roxana', and 'Heigh Ho' by Fabian Nesti all stomp, gyrate, and whoop away, indulging the very same escapist fantasies as those involved in the scene back then.

Review: The Disco Essentials label is back with another serving of what it thinks are the most crucial cosmic grooves to have in your collection. We inclined to agree frankly because these latest four gems are filled with heat. 'Track 1' is an Afro-tinged bubbler with loose limed rhythms and chanting vocals that bring the soul next to steamy sax lines. 'Track 2' is hot and humid with diffuse organ chords and tightly woven rhythms then 'Track 3' gets a little deeper with bongos and funk bass riffs overlaid by characterful melodies. 'Track 4' closes out with hip swinging claps and more neat riffs to get grown up floors going.

Review: Bob Mc Gilpin released 'Superstar' in 1978 and it soon became a smash hit around the world, even making its way into the charts and mainstream radio. The original is offered up here in all its loose limbed glory with the starry melodies and fizzing synths all making for take off. Then comes a Marco Fratty extended version that draws out the good bits and brings a stylised vocal to the front and centre. The full vocal mix goes one step further and is a truly uplifting gem while the Smooth Paradise mix pairs things back to a deeper, dubbier vibe with mid-tempo drums teasing and pleasing in equal measure. A great package that fuses the old with the new.

The project was spearheaded by Alexander Henninger and Ken Taylor, who had a barrel of laughs cutting up dark and punchy box jams with some cheeky Big Apple samples for the kind of unexpected dancefloor drop which will always incite a reaction from the crowd. There are a variety of mixes to choose from depending on which specific energy you want to bring, plus there's the bonus 'Short Wave Symphony' as the consummate B2 track which offers some pure synth divisions after all that seat-inducing action on the rest of the platter.

The synths take the form of dizzying arps as well as soaring pixelated leads. Pulsing pads add further colour and great vocoder vocals are the icing on this most delicious cake. The three different mixes propose the tune to different parts of the night in equal style.

Review: British label Demon Singles Club reissue two proper classic disco bits by the American soul group Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes: the original 1979 version of 'Prayin'', a gospel-inspired dancefloor anthem that was produced by Harold Melvin and written by John Whitehead and Gene McFadden, and the contemporaneous Blue Album highlight 'Baby I'm Back'. Review: MF Robots' Dawn Joseph and Jan Kincaid dropped real heat back in 2021 with their Break The Wall album. 'Make The Call' was one of the standout tunes from it and now BBE has assembled a series of new remixes of it by Two Soul Fusion. That tackle all genres starting with a house remix full of soul and warm drums. The Boogie remix is an instrumental take that unfurls over nine minutes of ass-shaking and irresistible groovy goodness. Review: Freestyle take us back to 1984 with this fully licensed 12" repress of a vital bit of intense disco heat from Midnight Energy. The New Jersey outfit really get their machines working overdrive on the A-side as they bring electro-boogie funk vibes to a tune that is something of a cult classic and rather expensive to find in OG form. 'Front Line' is a brilliantly sleazy one with lots packed in and then the flip side tune 'Saving All My Love' comes in two forms and both are full of big vocal hooks and percolating funk drums.

Review: Dominican band Midnight Groovers was founded back in the early 1970s and went on to become known as one of the best around at what they did. They have a unique sense of sway and swing and cadence to their music and that is well exemplified by the A-side tune on this new 45 rpm. It makes for a double pronged attack on both body and soul. The flip side 'Ce bon comme ca' features an edit by Dominique Panolm, a singer-songwriter from Guadeloupe who keeps the energy but updates it with a more modern touch that is sure to ignite dan floors. Review: This new 12" is a compendium piece to Chocolate Star's recent 7" release and it comes in the form of more glorious disco goodness from Gary Davis. It kicks off with Warehouse Preservation Society's Full Mix of 'Red Gold & Green' featuring Davis. It's a stomping disco viber with loose-limbed percussion and dubbed vocals. Dvais's 'Heartbeats' then gets flipped by Knoe1 into an Acidsoul mix that is laced up with grilling 303s under the happy, tooting disco arps and fresh vocals. Canada's Elxandra then reworks a lesser known Davis house cut 'Skip & Scat' into a driving bit of full flavour deepness. It's a limited press on these rare cuts so do not sleep.

Review: Some rare late night delights championed by the great Ron Hardy brought back to life on this one. Catherine Miller's 'Hunchin' All Night' from 1977 is good old fashioned disco that way it was intended, while Pam Todd & The Love Exchange deliver the life-affirming and timeless 'Can't Hold The Feeling' from the same year, and on the flip you have The Music Makers' classic 'Jump, Jump, Jump' from 1979 making RDY #48 a must have for disco lovers.

Review: Once falling prey to the tendency for rare records to be heavily priced up and thus rendered inaccessible to buyers on the secondhand market, Florence Miller's 'I'm Just A Lonely Girl/The Groove I'm In' now sees a long-awaited reissue via its original label P&P. Very little about Miller is known, save for her involvement in the label run by Peter Brown, on which just two records were ever released. But these two cuts - one of which is more lonesome and serene, and the other skewed towards bombast - are eternal testaments to her talent, and have become sought-after staples of the Northern Soul scene.

Review: First released in Austria way back in 1986, Miss D's sole single, 'Moving', has long been an in-demand item on the dusty-fingered 'selector' scene. Listening to this much-needed reissue, it's easy to see why. In its' A-side 'driver mix' form, the track sees the mysterious Miss D deliver rhythmical spoken word verses over a rubbery electro-funk beat, killer synth bass and some Balearic-leaning melodies. Throw in a catchy (male) chorus, and you have a genuine winner. The flip side 'Move It Again' mix' is a dub mix-style affair that dispels with most of the vocals and instead focuses on the killer groove, mid-80s sample cut-ups, scratching sounds and some suitably spaced-out effects.

Review: 'Eki Bis' is a quintessential example of fresh modern-day soukous and zouk. Despite being first laid down by Congolese singer Lutchiana Mobulu in 1989, the single sounds just as fresh and relevant for the present day as it did back then, reissed via Hot Casa here for a crisp and infectious new reversion. The title track is emblematic of this enough, with high-pitched guitar noodlings and ecstatic raps delivered over a sizzlingly-hot beat skillet. Review: Marseille's Mofak lays down yet another two modern boogie cuts for the fans. The titular 'Rock Your Money', featuring the vocal talents of Said (IAM) and Elois Scroggins, makes ample use of appended vocoder and telephoning lead vox; all comes wrapped in an ultimately bouncy number, against which Scroggins' vocals are stark. On the B, we hear 'System 3.0', a logical continuation of the A-side's theme, albeit this time gladly accepting the femme vocal assurances of AprilSoul, while Mofak himself hops on the vocoder; both paint a picture of a systematic love, one which cannot survive without vice and indulgence.

Review: Monchan and D Briggs are two US house producers whose involvement in the New York scene has seen to many a dazzling EP release lately. Their latest for Dailysession here is a dizzying yet loose affair, with its four tracks inspired by every sound from space disco to trance to nu-jazz. Impressive textures immerse tracks like 'Eagle Eyes' in grit, while edits from Monchan and visitor Prince Klassen revisit the formerly released 'Midnight Luv Bee' and 'Ibiza' respectively. Both make for convincingly retro, night driving disco and pop versions of two very well known songs - we'll leave the guesswork to you.

Review: Disco re-edit master Moplen has been busy touching up this Jackie Moore gem with sprinkles of his studio magic. The original vocal remains in tact as the trumpets and funky drum breaks power forwards the groove below. A vocal mix makes more of the sublime soul tones and then come two further versions on the flip. The Breakdown remix is one of big breaks but nothing detracts from the lung busting performance of Moore. Last of all is a Chin-mental mix so you really have plenty to chose from.
