Love In Motion

Love In Motion (12" version) (6:20)
Love In Motion (instrumental) (5:36)
Love In Motion (Vanzetti & Sacco edit) (6:46)
Review: 1000 Ohm is a Belgian synth-pop/new wave duo that formed in 1981; the following year, their debut single 'A.G.N.E.S.' became a local hit, thanks to its prominent drum lines and a loyalty to the fun-loving melodic monotony endemic to the genre at the time. But despite their initial success, their second single 'Love In Motion' didn't come until 1984 on Clip Records; this disco cheerer-upper is as powerful and bold as it is relaxing and beach-worthy, straddling two distinct emotions through two distinct call-and-response lines. The B-side features an instrumental version of the same track, as well as a remix by the faux-anarchist duo Vanzetti & Sacco.

The Gift (40 Thieves Disco mix) (6:36)
The Gift (40 Thieves Disco dub) (7:38)
The Gift (40 Thieves beats) (4:26)
Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Much Too Much (3:58)
Review: 9th Creation's Superheros album was a treasure trove of soulful disco tunes that have since become hard to find and ever more desirable. Now the Dynamite Cuts 45s Series has two of the gems from it on this special new 7". It's the first time there a-side has been on its own piece of vinyl and that tune 'Whats Shakin' goes first. It's gloriously glossy and high quality disco with funky horns and big bass, a lush vocal hook and luxuriant sound. 'Much Too Much' is on the reverse and is another floor facing disco tune with a heart swelling vocal and smooth chords that can often fetch L150 on its own.

Constant Curve (feat Ellen Beth Abdi - Emperor Machine extended rework) (7:19)
Waiting On A Train (feat Ellen Beth Abdi & Chunky - Jade Parker remix) (4:02)
Review: The album 1982 stands out as one of the finest moments in A Certain Ratio's story. When you're talking about a band that started half a decade before the year 1982, that's saying something. Following on from the landmark ACR Loco, the outfit's 2023 record is packed with multidimensionality - dipping toes into everything from gritty post punk (a sound from whence they first came) to Afrobeat, all realised with exceptional attention to detail and the highest possible standards. 2023 EP, as the title suggests, builds on the impact of that latest long-from release. Opening on the jazzy late night club workout 'Day By Day', a brand new number, the package then jumps into work from the aforementioned LP, redone by contemporary dons. So that's Werkha on a stepping, garage-hued version of 'SAMO', Emperor Machine emphasising the exotic disco grooves of 'Constant Curve', and Jade Parker offering a highly percussive cosmic take on 'Waiting On A Train'.

El Fen (Stefano Ritteri versione Spaziale) (5:51)
El Fen (4:52)
Yemma (4:11)
Review: Earlier in the year, reissue label Spaziale roared into life via a three-track EP featuring cuts from John Ozila's sought-after 1979 album "Boogie Salsa". Here they offer up more buried treasure in the shape of a tweaked reissue of Kabyle artist A. Mislayene's 1976 debut double A-side "Yemma/El Fen". This time round they've flipped the script, devoting the first side to a superb extended re-edit of hypnotic dub disco number "El Fen" by Stefano Ritteri. He emphasizes the groove, adding additional emphasis to Mislayene's chanted vocals and spacey synthesizer lines. It's an altogether more dancefloor-centric spin on the original mix, which opens side B. The EP concludes with "Yemma", which sounds like a deeper, dreamier and more obviously Arabic-sounding take on the now famous William Onyeabor sound.

The Talented Mr Adams (9:26)
Review: This special 12" features two tracks that will not be on the vinyl version of the forthcoming AC Soul Symphony, Disco opus "Metamorphosis" featuring a 20 piece orchestra alongside a whole host of top live players. That makes it an even more vital pick up because both are pure disco fire. 'I Want To See You Dance' has the title's classic refrain repeated over big Salsoul style string licks, funky basslines and soloing piano. 'The Talented Mr Adams' is a tribute to the legendary disco producer Patrick Adams and is a super sweet swooner with golden live strings and brass backing up a loose-limbed rhythm and vamping pianos that get you in the mood for love. These two tracks act as a fine teaser for what's to come on the much-anticipated album from a contemporary version of acts like MFSB and Love Unlimited Orchestra.

Tembezi (Marcellus Pittman remix)
Review: Internasjonal pull a curveball with the delightful afro house stylings of "Tembezi" from the unheralded Ackin'. Featuring the poignant vocal talents of M. Akamatsu, there are multiple charms to "Tembezi" which brandishes the sort of richly textured rhythms and melancholic piano improvisations that can't help but encourage the movement of feet. This being an Internasjonal release there is an accompanying Prins Thomas remix that winds down the tempo to a more cosmic level without losing any of the original's tinkling delights but our favourite thing about this record is the final remix from 3 Chairs originator Marcellus Pittman. Adopting a bumpier note, Pittman's talent for crafting emotive synth melodies and dubbed piano chords shines through with positively incandescent results.

Review: Silky smooth Italian disco delights abound on this reissue from the ever reliable Archeo. Originally released in 1983, Mario Acquaviva's sought-after Balearic hit gets a much deserved repress to curb the sharks and bring these evergreen grooves to a wider audience. There are plentiful studio touchstones to appreciate here - a little whisper of Supertramp and Steely Dan alongside more overt disco grooves, with lead track "Notturno Italiano" being the stand-out hit. With a more mellow B-side including the sultry "Fortuna", this is a record as much about pure listening pleasure as party scenarios - sit back and let the sumptuous sound envelop you.

This Time Baby (Bully Boy dub) (4:43)
Review:  Those playful edit and remix maestros at French label Act of Sedition are back with another red hot, super limited 2 x 7" special. It kicks off with a nice languid remix of the classic 'Let Love Be Free' with an extra low slung sleazy bassline beneath the gorgeous vocal. Bruno Belissimo goes for a heavy, scuffed up deep house take on 'Coffee & Cocaine' that has a vast bassline and some jazzy keys all tumbling off grid. Lego edits 'It Aint Reggae' into a high speed boogie gem and Bully Boy offers a chunky disco stomper to round things out.

Review: Originally taking form as Universal Robot Band's dreamy instrumental disco cut "Thyme" in 1977, within a year of its release Patrick Adams invited Marta Acuna to add suitably yearning, hazy vocal. Adding to the silky groove's allure without taking any of its original soul, Marta elevated an already pristine track into a real moment that embodies the deeper, most soulful aspects of late 70s disco. A highly authentic P&P reissue.

Arthur Adams - "You Got The Floor" (5:54)
Millie Jackson - "We Got To Hit It Off" (4:42)
C-Brand - "Wired For Games" (8:38)
Review: Groovin Recordings is kicking off a new series in brilliant style here with three killer disco-boogie tracks. They were all first released between 1979 and 1982 and first up is Arthur Adams with 'You Got The Floor.' It's an uber cool groove with AOR vocals, loose drum funk and sprinkles of disco dust. There is more theatre to the soaring strings of Millie Jackson's 'We Got To Hit It Off' which has rickety drum loops and funky bass riffs. C-Brand's 'Wired For Games' closes won and might be the best of the lot with its coy male vocal, playful guitar twangs and nice raw claps.

When I'm Alone (Dirty Channels remix) (5:43)
When I'm Alone (JKriv & Peter Matson remix) (6:14)
Review: Adeline is undoubtedly best known for being the front-woman of Brooklyn-based disco band Escort, an outfit whose members also included Razor-N-Tape co-founder JKriv. It makes sense, then, that her latest solo single is appearing on their "Reserve" offshoot. Co-produced by Midnight Magic man Morgan Willey, "When I'm Alone" is a revivalist leftfield disco cut rich in "Beam Me Up" style walking bass, ear-catching guitar riffs and lolloping drums - all topped off by a fantastic vocal from Adeline. Jacques Renault delivers a slightly heavier, house-influenced remix with subtle Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, while Dirty Channels offers a more bustling but still pleasingly organic sounding disco-house take. Finally JKriv joins forces with Peter Matson on a remix that sounds like vintage Escort with added dub delays.

Review: Kevin Gorman aka Adesse Versions brings his cut and paste ethos to Brooklyn edit series Razor-N-Tape with a varied pair of heaters. On this wicked two tracker, the label takes it back to their early format of one track per side: and these two cuts can certainly carry it! On this side we've got "Bumpin' NYC" a lo-slung disco classic with that proper New York City vibe, if ya catch our drift? On that side, we have a lovely little number in the form of "Sistem" that flips an afrobeat sample into a dark and groovy club track with even a little bit of acid for good measure.

Review: New year, new white label vinyl that you need in your life. This one comes from Adam "Admin" Wickens who is a lovely chap and fine DJ and producer who we havent heard from for a while. In the past he has impressed on Kolour Limited and Banoffee Pies and now goes deep across a pair of jazz tinged deep house gems. 'Step Into Light' has a louche beat and piano lounge chords over the top of the shakers, dusty hits and mellifluous pads. 'Reflect & Heal' then speed sup little but is just as soft, cuddly, and richly melodic for those late night sessions.

Take Me To The Top (Michael Gray Sultra remix) (7:18)
Take Me To The Top (Michael Gray dub mix) (5:33)
Review: As many of you may know, Advance's "Take Me To The Top" is something of a boogie classic; an Italian record from 1982 rich in soulful vocals and squidgy synths that sounds like it was recorded in New York rather than Napoli or Rome. Here, long-serving house producer Michael Gray (he of Full Intention fame) gets his hands on the original and delivers a couple of contemporary updates that are pleasingly reverential to the source material. The A side "Sultra Remix" has a few tasty contemporary touches - looped sections, chunky beats, special effects - but is otherwise fairly faithful to the sun-kissed, synth-laden original mix. While rather good, it's the flipside Dub that really set our pulses racing, not least because it emphasizes the elastic bassline, loved-up chord sequence and colourful electrofunk electronics.

Review: The legendary Salsoul Records served up this Afrika System track back in the 80s and it got an Italian remake in 1986 which got hammered on dance floors. Now the High Fashion Music label has secured the master tapes and passed them to Moplen who has taken his scalpel to the multitrack and doe some fine edit work. The tunes come with big melodic basslines and lovely percussion. The vocal chants are colourful and charismatic and with the lush melodies, the whole thing adds up to a killer groove.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Afrodesia may come on like another dusted down gem from those dedicated detectives at Best, but it is in fact a modern construction from the talented studio trysts of Mystic Jungle and Whodamanny from the Periodica camp. These Italian producers have more than proved their knack for crafting sublime, honey-smooth jams with a nod to the golden studio era of the 70s and 80s, and they're more than up to the task on this killer 12" of heavy funking jams with a dose of boogie and a nod to Ivory Coast disco. It's quite simply perfection, rendered with love and attention to detail, but utterly natural in its feel and flavour.

The guitar line glides from left to right, keeping the bold elements all in check: the lavish keys, the rolling percussion and the soul-churning vocals. Complete with full instrumental, there's heaps of fun to be had with this classic.

Review: Since establishing itself in 2012, the Al-Tone Edits series has proved to be an excellent source of obscurist reworks, with label bosses Alvin Delk and Tony Fields guaranteeing material that's effortlessly soulful, and righteously dancefloor-friendly. This sixth edition in the series focuses on the world of gospel, offering a quartet of reworks of praise-worthy soul, funk and disco jams. First up is the trumpet-laden funk-soul skip of "Mad Dash", before "My Soul" provides some choral gospel vocals, spacey synths and deliciously rubbery slap bass. Flip for the killer gospel-disco hustle of "U" - all impassioned vocals, parping horns, hustling bass and sinewy strings, and the intergalactic synthesizer assault that is "Worship".

Review: 1980s Italo disco don Alan Ross dropped his most well known jam 'The Last Wall' back in 1986. It has aged to perfection and still sounds like future music almost 40 years later, which is part of the reason it rams a classic that costs a few quid for an original. The ever reliable ZYX though has reissued it here on coloured vinyl 12" and includes the original as well as a pair of remixes. That OG version is all about the sugary sweet synth chords and skyward arps next to vocals that remind of Erasure. Flemming Dalum updates with a modern touch and a R-Mix version is the final piece of the puzzle.

Review: Should you be hankering after some suitably positive music right now - and let's face it, most of us are - then we'd recommend checking out this fine four-tracker from French jazz-funk combo Aldorande. There are two original cuts to choose from: the languid, laid-back and undeniably sunny breeziness of "Summer Body" - all female scat vocals, bustling jazz-funk bass, sweet pianos, two-step beats and boogie synths - and the bolder, more electronic fizz of "Breakfast In Space", which reminded us a little of vintage weather report. Charles Maurice delivers instrumental Dub versions of both, naturally beefing up the basslines and adding a little extra percussive pressure.

It's got a distinctly early 90s vibe, with plenty of melodic hand holds to dig your fingers into, while 'Panorama' has a swishy, disco-tinted sassiness to take you away in the heat of the night. 'The Cure' kicks off the B side with a springy, techy approach that doesn't hold back on the big synth lines, and then We Amps steps up for a remix of 'Panorama' which keeps things funky without losing that peak time demeanour which persists throughout the record.
