Review: After having released their debut EP last year, Munich's Public Possession are proud to present Stockholm duo Aksel & Aino's first full length titled Lullabies for Submarines. Described as a 'grand tale of companionship', the combination of Aksel's instrumentation and Aino's poetry remains upbeat and looks to a bright future. From the glassy-eyed, bittersweet and Krafterk-y 'Dancing Grass', the slo-mo disco of 'Fewiopia', Italo influenced flavour of 'Spallanzani' plus some Metro Area influenced melancholia on the cover of Roxette's pop classic 'Fading Like A Flower'. Forever enjoying memories of long nights, brief encounters, bright moments and extreme euphoria.

Cat: LXMXK 03. Rel: 17 Nov 20
  1. Preach On Sunday (8:27)
  2. Can I Get Ahhm (7:15)
Review: Run by Swiss house maestro Alex Storrer, the Lexx Music imprint returns with Nikita Elmer aka Bocab: a trumpeter and producer whose previous work was more centered around hip-hop styles, but here moves into purist deep house in impressive fashion. The sombre yet soulful (and dusty!) Detroit vibe of 'Preach On Sunday' will no doubt bear comparisons to the Three Chairs sound, but it is still a compliment as far as we're concerned. On the flip, things take a more optimistic turn on the lo-slung, slo-mo, feel good emotions of "Can I Get Ahhm".

  6. Abase - "Fallen Statues" (5:56)
Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk label has now been releasing music for 15 years. As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.

  1. Expansion (7:04)
  2. Star Traveller (6:44)
  3. Machine Logic (7:51)
  4. Sun Garden (5:33)
Review: It's five years since we last heard from Brad Peterson, but now the former Moods & Grooves regular is back with a new astral traveller for the deep house crew. 'Expansion' opens the Plant Life EP up in style with a sturdy groove carrying illustrious brushstrokes of percussion and keys, all bathed in a hazy glow that could sound transcendental in the morning light. 'Star Traveller' takes a more deep-rooted, mellow path for lounge-ready scenarios where it's the head that wants to be moved by the music. 'Machine Logic' lays down a tougher kind of beat, but offsets it with swooping pads and chords and then 'Sun Garden' closes the EP out in a gorgeous reverie of tumbling drums and lilting flute.

Review: Here comes the second chapter of Dactylonomy, a 12 inch pentalogy from the weird and wonderful mind of French rule-breaker Pepe Bradock. He actually opens up with one of his more straight forward house jams - a deep, shuffling affair mired in heavy filter use. It's on the reverse that he serves up twisted melodies, jazzy groove made of broken loops and detached cosmic ambient interludes that are awash with gorgeous chords and sci-fi details. 'Danske Mansus' is a highlight with its freaky after party feels, while 'Pitcher' could be a Moodymann jam for the way it is so brilliantly loose and expertly sampled.

  4. Testify (Alan Dixon remix) (6:57)
Review: Had it not been for the cursed pandemic, Davie's 'Testify' - a righteous fusion of neo-soul, gospel and nu-disco - would have been an anthem throughout the many festivals dotted around the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Here the superb original is twisted into even more celebratory new dancefloor shapes across another essential EP. Mousse T sets the tone by turning it into a jazzy, percussive and stomping chunk of disco-house pleasure, before KDA re-imagines it as a thrusting, hard-edged house loop jam that wisely showcases Davie's inspired bassline. Over on the flip, Danny Krivit gets out his scalpel and successfully extends the mid-tempo original, while Alex Dixon pops a pill or two and reworks it into a rushing piano-house special.

Review: Norwegian groove wizard, Sex Tags UFO boss, occasionally known as DJ Dog; Fett Burger comes correct with his most personal and explorative release to date. Thank U 4 Letting Me Live My Life sees the experimental house producer celebrate some of his deepest inspirations across this nine track album. Inspirations such as sinewy, ever-morphing acid (the incredible 13min opener 'This Game The World') sprightly, feel-heavy trance (the cathedral shimmers of 'XTC TWYHTS'), bubblesome good-time disco (the subaquatic finale 'Disco Fem') and classic foundational rave aesthetics (the hurricane synths on 'Atmospheree 2 Emo-tion') Each cut laced with his signature off-grid percussion and that loose natural rhythm, it's one of Fett Burgers juiciest dishes to date. Now Burger off and enjoy your lives!

  2. When It Feels Right (Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:06)
Review: Japan's DJ Kawasaki links up with Monday Michuru for a new house come disco tune that is full of big vocal delights. The funky riffs are knotted and infectious, the rickety rhythm section nice and loose and the synth motifs all filled with charm and colour, It's a perfectly feel good tune that will make you dance any woes away. On the flip, New York legend and Kind of the Edits, Danny Krivit steps up with an extended edit that is jam packed with noodling piano solos and a more bristling, Latin tinged percussive element.

Review: Kornel Kovacs and HNNY's Puss imprint has another brilliantly unhinged offering here with DJ Space Heater making what appears to be his debut release. The a-side is a speed garage flip with forceful drums and speech excerpts spliced in next to sentinel vocal breaks. It's silly, but seriously fun. 'Go With The Flow' (HMT VIP) takes care of the B-side and is a funky beat with a pained male vocal and warped synth spin back sounds. It's another mad use of a vocal sample that in the wrong hands would be terrible, but is here oh so right.

Review: French deep house imprint Rutilance reaches its 'Twentieth' release as the name suggests, with four surefire tracks by its label chiefs. On the A side, the ever reliable DJ Steaw hands in two tributes to the sounds of yesteryear: he first captures the classic sound of the Cab Drivers on the tough rolling analogue bounce of "This Kind Of Music", followed by the funky disco loops on "Fat Sherbet". On the flip, co-head Gunnter makes a rare appearance and pushes the envelope harder with his tough rolling and dubby stomper "Wait" and closes it out with the entrancing energy of "Shhhake It" where its sonar bleeps hypnotise you against a backdrop of Todd Terry style 4/4 breakbeats.

Review: In the two years since the release of the Rye Lane Volume 1 LP, Al Dobson Jr has been busy. This belated, mixtape style follow-up is something of a beast, with 28 cuts, interludes and quick-fire rhythm tracks to enjoy. Like its' predecessor, Rye Lane Volume II & III is similar in ethos to the work of his friend and contemporary Mo Kolours, with tropical rhythms, African drums and low-slung hip-hop beats being combined with dusty vocal samples, rich Rhodes chords, freshly baked electronics, and all manner of tasty global influences. Highlights come thick and fast, from the Middle Eastern shuffle of "Overseas Lebanese", and Afro-jazz drum workout "Malful (Nebetia)", to the eyes-down deep house bliss of "Peru Timing (Part 2)

Review: Moscow's Deepology Special are back with the third edition in their Four Seasons Series. It features Barcelona's Soul Minority who provides a sensual and evocative rework of Elastic Sound's 'Moscow After Autumn Rain' on the A side, which is decorated with infectious disco vocal loops and creamy Rhodes keys. On the flip, the irresistible mood music continues with veteran producers Konstantin Atomas & Vasiliy Basalaev aka Acos CoolKAs with 'Miracle' (featuring Metropoliz), and the life-affirming Detroit hi-tech soul vibes of Tek Killa's 'The Beach' which only appeared on digital back in 2009 - and we can see why it was worthy of a vinyl reissue.

Cat: EGLO 013. Rel: 25 Nov 20
  1. Marylin (7:30)
  2. Farukx (6:34)
Review: Eglo continues to offer up choice reissues of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. The latest to get the treatment is 2011 12" Marilyn, which appeared at a time when Shepherd was just beginning to expand his sound palette following a few years of distinctively-swung deep house singles. The title track still boasts the distinctive, jammed-out synthesizer lead lines that were then a hallmark of his productions, as well as the shuffling house beats that we all love dearly, but also makes use of lots of extra percussion, Motor City-influenced chords and some sweet scat singing. Flipside 'Farukx' is a little more revolutionary, with the Eglo co-founder wrapping jazz-fired broken beats in drowsy chords, twinkling synth sounds and wavy female vocal snippets. Likethe A-side, it's one of Shepherd's best.

Now, the co-founder Lee Foss lands back on his home stable with frequent collaborator Anabel England and label regular Detlef. Here they offer up a trippy tune that is deep and bubbly with Englund's vocals layers over the top. 'I Have Synthed' is much deeper and darker, with gritty tech drums and crisp hits that snap you into action. Both tunes are designed for intimate dance floors and offer a fresh update on the Hot Creations sound.

Review: Fred Everything's profile may not be as high as it once was, but he continues to serve up high quality treats - as this surprise collaboration with legendary vocalist Robert Owens proves. The latter is in fine form on the EP-opening 'Classic Mix', a warming, musically detailed chunk of vocal deep house positivity that sounds like it was partially inspired by Dubtribe Soundsystem classic 'Do It Now'. Fred Everything also provides two 'BDTW' mixes on the flip: the fluttering synths sounds and vintage Chicago house grooves of the 'Deep Mix', and a more stripped-back 'Vox Dub'. Best of all though is Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson's rework, which recalls the fluid synth sounds, jazzy flutes and intricate percussion programming that marked out his early 2000s work on Mantis Recordings.

Review: After ten years, Glenn Underground has decided to relaunch the GU Essentials series, which gathers together some of his favourite and most sought-after cuts. While all four cuts on this fourth volume (the first appeared on Cajual Records way back in 1995) are archival cuts, only two have previously been released. The Chi-town legend hits the ground running with '606', a fine acid house workout built around beefed-up TR-606 drums and psychedelic electronics, before offering us another chance to savour the chunky deep house heaviness of 1996 cut 'Parties'. Over on the flip, 'All Night Slam' is another raw and intense acid style jack-track, while 1995's 'The Wheel' is a breezy and attractive deep house roller.

Review: Earlier in the year distinguished deep house and deep techno producer Kaoru Inoue dusted off his Chari Chari alias for the first time in four years and delivered We Hear The Last Decades Dreaming, a gorgeous (and essential) fusion of new age ambient, American minimalism, jazz and dusty downtempo grooves. On the back of that acclaimed release, HMV in Japan has decided to offer-up a first ever vinyl pressing of the Japanese great's 2002 album under the alias, In Time. A little bolder and more colourful in tone, the set sees Inoue and a variety of guest musicians brilliantly blur the boundaries between ambient, modern classical, gentle Latin beats, dub-flecked grooves, numerous exotic Asian musical styles, hazy Latin techno and the deepest house around.

Review: Jarren hails from LA and brings plenty of the warmth and soul of that place to his music on this, the third rase from the already fine sounding Slices of A Dog. Mixing up deep house grooves, sultry sax from Jacob "JD" Crouch, oodles of g-funk and plenty of lush broken beats, this is a record that will bring heat to even the coldest winter night. Low-riding drums, cold analogue pops and hits and meandering top lines all take your mind away while the squelchy bass keeps your ass on the move. LA legend Bendek is the man bringing that on guitar, and label's co-founder Brothermartino on flutes also plays a key part.

Review: Jazztronik is the free-form music project headed up by Japanese artist Ryota Nozaki. He has put out no fewer than 24 albums since his first in 1999, and in 2005 he put out Samurai. The lead single from that record now gets its own pressing treatment on hi son label and comes with two alternate versions. The original is a shiny, glossy and uplifting nu jazz tune with big broken beats and even big piano solos layered over the top. Some vocal ad libs add a contemporary edge and ensure the whole thing takes off. A more striped back Beats version will be perfect for more serous dancing and the Piano version does what it says on the tin.

Masters At Work step up to flip 'Antigravity Love' into one of their famously warm, deep, colourful house grooves with darting bass and soulful vocals. Review: Given their shared musical heritage - both are members of the extended Firecracker Recordings crew - it's perhaps something of a surprise to find that Face The Facts marks the first serious collaboration between Linkwood and Gav 'Fudge Fingaz' Sutherland AKA Other Lands. It's less surprising that the album is really, really good. Touching on warming synth-boogie, head-nodding downtempo jams, mutant beatdown, Balearic beats, sunset-ready soundscapes and warming analogue deep house, the 13-track set is notable for the pair's extensive use of dusty old drum machines, tactile instrumentation (think smooth Rhodes solos, languid guitar solos and blissed-out synths) and Sutherland's hazy, sometimes seductive singing voice.

Review: It took Alex Storrer AKA Lexx almost two decades to get round to recording his debut album, Cosmic Shift. It's somewhat of a surprise then to find him delivering a follow-up barely 12 months later, this time under the alternative LX72 alias. New Affinity is a little more dancefloor-focused than its undeniably Balearic predecessor, with Storrer delivering a set of tactile, retro-futurist deep house and head-nodding downtempo jams that sound like they could have been recorded at any time since 1988. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the Afro-tinged 'The Quest', the beatdown style drowsiness of 'Players', the riff-ready roll of 'Duster' and the heady, bass-heavy bruk-up business of 'State of Resilience'.

Review: Another four track various artist EP from London imprint Nuances de Nuit, and their slogan 'Pour Les Danseurs' (for the dancers) could not be more apt. On Nuances de Nuit Vol. 5, the hypnotic, breakbeat-driven experience of 'Chromium' by Mehlor with Maxime Boekel (aka Le Louche) is reminiscent of some Rominimal sounds, while the on the flip the rolling, funky and ethereal tech house of Local Dub's 'Moon Dog' calls to mind iO (Mulen) and is an impressive debut from the You&Me affiliates. This is closed out by the swing-fuelled euphoria from Karab (Tessellate) on 'Hors Piste' that's full of classic house motifs.

Review: Bielefeld, Germany's Deep Inspiration Records endeavours to present the best of house, slo-mo, disco, soul and chill - in the words of the record label head 'expect the unexpected.' A clutch of most welcome newcomers appear on the aptly-titled latest EP from Deep Inspiration Show Records - it sure feels like a family affair. The arcane and hypnotic minimal house vibe of 'Reversed' by Melchior Sultana with Janelle Pulo rules the A side in fine fashion. On the flip, there's the hazy and blunted jazz bar loops of Jan Kincl, Borut Cvajner & Regis Kattie's 'Paint It Black' (getting that Max Graef/Glenn Astro vibe in effect) and closing it out is Dan Piu with the shimmering Alleviated style vibe of 'A Beautiful Day' awash in FM synth tones.

Review: Somehow, Alton Miller is a rather under-regraded, or certainly under exposed, members of the US house fraternity. He has turned out as many essential tracks as any of his peers, and continues to do so here on the fledgling Forbidden Dance label. He opens up with some of his typically musical house grooves, with loose drums, subtle acid sounds and lush melodies. A Rollin to Detroit mix of one of his older tunes 'Shine On Me' reworks it as a deep and jazzy number, while 'Headspace' slows to a downtempo crawl that sinks you in deep and 'After The Rain' explores slow motion cosmic synth work. Perfect.

  4. Freakenstein - "Thafonk"
Review: The second drop on Hearlucinate comes correct with some more of that nasty party-starting tackle you want to make sure you're packing in your utility belt. The 'Bum Jump' mix of Ron Obvious' 'Tugging' kicks off the A side with a cheeky swing, bendy acid line and nimble organ licks to give you a loose and lively 90s flavour, which carries on through to the break-speckled acid funker 'Elixic 3'. On the B side, Tristan Da Cunha gets locked into a tunnelling tech house shuffle with plenty of ruff n' tuff attitude on the 'Tushy Dub' of 'Bass Penetration'. Then Da Cunha dons his Freakenstein alias to slap down the body-poppin', bleep-tastic electro funk of 'Thafonk' for all the B-girls and B-boys.

Review: Octo Octa and Eris Drew are DJs who know how to make a club sweat. But they also know how to make one cry. Their high energy blend of techno, rave and house wears its heart proudly on its sleeve and has made them firm party favourites who always managed to whip up a crowd but with careful selections and smart sequencing rather than all the obvious bangers. This fabric mix is further proof of that, a real boon that will lift your spirits while we continue to be deprived of actual club experiences, and it was all recorded from their cabin in the forest of New Hampshire.

Review: Following up some great releases recently by Bella Boo and Sofia Kourtesis, Stockholm's Studio Barnhus return with a full length by Off The Meds. This is a local Swedish-South African crew, consisting of producers Adrian Lux, Carli Lof and Mans Glaeser with vocalist Kamohelo Khoaripe, and they've fast become staples of the label's sound. Track wise, the bouncy bass action on 'Fani Madida' is supported by a cool vocal delivery, while the futurist bass on 'Wena' borders on electro aesthetics. There are some oddball moments too, as heard on the paranoid 'Voice Of Meds' and the knackered/off-kilter slo-mo groove of 'EKSE'. Towards the end, the brooding and minimal slow burner 'Dr Silencer' was another album highlight.

Review: Conoley Ospovat is back on Kimochi Sound, who have honoured the occasion with a super limited, hand-numbered plum vinyl 12" in spray-painted sleeve. It looks delicious and sounds just as good: 'Post-Typhoon Shakedown' does somehow capture the energy after a storm - that sense of calm, with dew in the air and optimism everywhere. It's a brilliantly bubbly house cut that makes way for the more spaced out tech house minimalism of 'From the Cockpit', an expansive track that gets you into a nice calm head space. 'Love The Lights' keeps you there with an even more reduced deep house brew while the closer is a summery, leggy instrumental house cut packed with interest.

Review: The inimitable Theo Parrish is in a class of one. His brand of music is impossible to categorise as it draws on so many unique sounds in so many unique ways. This new album is another spellbinding affair that takes scuffed up house rhythms and intertwines them with freeform percussive patterns and off-grid synths that get pulled apart then rebuilt before your very ears. It is experimental music with an improvised jazz mindset that can range from complex and dense tapestries like 'Radar Detector' to the more upbeat and playful 'Hennyweed Buckdance' via fucked up drum sketches like 'All Your Boys Are Biters.'

  2. Untitled One
Review: Apart from the obvious love for his musical talents, both as a producer and as a DJ, one of the reasons why we love Theo Parrish so damn much is his repressing policy. Unlike some of his peers, the man has no problem in repressing in-demand Sound Signatures from the past, and this time it's number 32 that receives a much-welcomed resurrection. The EP features singer Dummine Depores, first on the utterly hummable and soulful "Chemistry" track, and then on "Untitled One", a classically off-kilter Parrish number filled to the brim with sampling goodness and even a distant set of guitar riffs! Killers.
