Review: Long time Balearic maestros A Man Called Adam came back strong with a new album this past summer, and now the gift keeps on giving with a second series of tasteful remixes from it. Aleksandir's mix of "Higher Powers" is a beautifully gentle and melodic deep house groover. Pads drift by like zephyrs and Sally Rogers' vocals appear like illusions on the clouds. A Man Called Adam themselves then dub out "Michael" with muted acid lines and muffled vocals. Felipe Gordon then layers up balmy pads and warming chords on his remix of "Mountains & Waterfalls" and a demo edit of "Higher Powers" from Aleksandir closes things out ion glistening, heartfelt melodic house fashion.

  3. Back In This Shit (5:24)
  4. Not (5:23)
Review: Over the last few years, Kai Alce has shied away from releasing material on NDATL Muzik under his own name, preferring instead to produce or promote other artists. Here he finally returns to the imprint he established a decade ago for the first time in nearly three years. Predictably, he begins in fine form via "Back In This Shit", a sublime, soul-flecked chunk of late night/early morning deepness that cleverly combines elements of hypnotic deep house and stargazing Motor City techno. Those looking for more straightforward deep house positivity should check the rich musicality and mazy synth solos of "Not" and the flute-laden flutter of "Sheed's Mood", while closer "Jam Tight" should suit those who like their drowsy deep house jams underpinned by bustling, jazz-fired drums.

Review: It feels like too long since we heard anything new from Joey Anderson, but it's wonderful to see him returning to the fray on a label we love as dearly as Uzuri. It's plain to hear none of the US techno maverick's wild edges have dulled in the interim - "Steady Stare" bristles with angular energy as ear-snagging as it is individual. "Let Us In" is another fluttering techno piece with East Coast toughness balanced out by pattering psychedelia. "Mystic Strings" amps up the trippy synth lines in stunning fashion, and "Someday" takes things in a more brooding direction without losing that distinctive spark that makes Anderson such a marvel to behold.

Review: Cologne-based, beard adorning duo Andhim looked back over their last two releases on their Superfriends imprint and roped in four credible names for some remix action. Italian hi-tech soul merchant Toto Chiavetta brings the full futuristic Afro soul aesthetic on opener "Windows 85". To rework their recent "Buenos Aires" EP, it's over to Berlin deep house heroes Johannes Albert and Kalupke with their versions of "Aires" and "Buenos" that do not disappoint with their uplifting neon-lit vibes. Most surprising of all is the addition of British techno legend Neil Landstrumm who lends his gnarly Midas touch to "Duno". The closing cut pounds away and rounds things out in a deeply lo-fi and emotive fashion.

Finally, the Detroit hero is back with a splash on his regular home of Mahogani Music with a stunning follow-up that brings out the best of his many musical threads. There's Cubano style vibes on "Back In The Old Times" and hand-clapping gospel tinted house grooves on "Mighty Tribe", sweet and sexy downtempo jams like "I'll Wait 4 U" and mad heavy R&B beatdowns like "What's Ur Name Again" - that's just the first four tracks and when they hit like this, you know the rest of the record's just as strong and just as varied.

  1. Down That Road (6:45)
  2. Down That Road (Apiento & Tepper dubbed It) (6:59)
  3. Down That Road (Padapella) (6:02)
Review: Apiento is back on World Building with another excellently soul infused deep house gem that builds on the much loved "Things You Do For Love" 7". Subtle acid flecked bassline snakes in and out of the crisp drums as buttery smooth, heartbroken lyrics up top get you where it hurts. It's hugely sophisticated and absorbingly understated. Apiento & Tepper's dubbed out version recalls the early work of the one and only Larry Heard before a beatless Padapella closes things out for those who want to really make a dramatic emotional statement pre, mid or post-set.

  4. Herb Martin - "Soul Drums" (Jerome Sydenham Raw dub) (5:32)
Review: Ibadan Records doesn't release anywhere near as many EPs as it once did, but those that the label does put out tend to be action-packed and of the highest quality. Their latest - the third edition in their occasional "Leads & Bites" multi-artist series - certainly fits the bill. Label founder Jerome Sydenham is undoubtedly the star of the show. He first joins forces with Argy on a hypnotic late night Dub of basement-bothering big room workout "Whisper Track", before going solo on the off-kilter, minor key deep house brilliance of "Purple Beech". Over on side B he collaborates with Janne Tavi on the "Weekend"-sampling deep piano house flex of "Street Jazz", before layering up toasty Rhodes riffs and sweaty, cymbal heavy jazz-house beats on his "Raw Dub" of Herb Martin's "Soul Drums".

  3. Porta Rain (7:32)
Review: The second release on Romana finds Magnus Asberg getting an extended remix treatment from Dudley Strangeways on the A side, as "Tape" gets contorted and mutated over 12 minutes for a perfect, hypnagogic trip. The original of "Tape" has its own share of wobbly weirdness going on, but it's framed by a more pronounced beat for livelier moments on the floor. "Porta Rain" keeps the modular tinkering up too, with a wild lead line that will dig right into your grey matter as it wraps itself around another stout groove.

Review: Having built up a considerable empire with his Lobster Theremin labels, Jimmy Asquith has been increasingly focusing on his own productions via a self-titled label and now this surefooted appearance on the mighty Hypercolour. "Take Anymore" is a rugged garage burner with nasty, dirty drums and a nagging chord line, cheeky false-ending edits and plenty more besides. "And Go" is a gutsy fist-shaker with brittle percussion geared towards the hard-jacking DJs, while "System (Power Mix)" interprets the deep house template with a particularly spicy take. "Time & Space" flips things up once more with some wild and wobbly jungle, confirming Asquith's skill at all forms of rowdy and raw dance music.

Review: It would be fair to say that "On A Different Note", the debut album from long-serving German producer Andreas Werner, has been a long time coming. Astonishingly, it's been 15 years since he first started exploring the deeper side of techno and tech-house under the Audio Werner alias, making the album a genuine 'event' release. Happily, it more than lives up to the hype, with Werner offering up a fine selection of melodious and atmospheric, club-ready cuts and occasional forays into intoxicating, otherworldly, beat-free territory (see the weird and spaced out "Es". Highlights include life-affirming opener "Ohne", the 13-minute deep tribal techno jam "Vogel" and the inspired ambient techno outing "Alter", which has echoes of Biosphere's 1993 cut "Baby Satellite".

Review: In recent years Fred Peterkin has been focusing on releasing music under his now more familiar Fred P alias rather than the Black Jazz Consortium pseudonym with which he first made his mark back in the late 2000s. Here he dons the latter alias once more for a triple-vinyl album that counts amongst his most alluring, evocative, musically intricate and ear-pleasing full-length excursions to date. It's largely a warm, positive and calming affair, with Peterkin wrapping glistening jazz guitars, dreamy chords, spacey effects, scat vocals and jazz-funk basslines around grooves that variously touch on broken beat, Motor City deep house, Latin house and the kind of languid, organic rhythms more associated with the productions of Osunlade and Ron Trent. In a word: sumptuous.

One/Two (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: BLACKTONGUE 01. Rel: 11 Dec 19
  1. One (8:26)
  2. Two (4:19)
Review: Not to be confused with the Hull-based doom metal band of the same name, Black Tongue is a debutant artist with links to Italian distributor, label and record store Mother Tongue. We're not sure who's behind the project, though both "One" and "Two" are superb. The former sits on side A and features jaunty, jazz-funk style synth stabs and spacey electronic solos rising above a retro-futurist boogie groove. It's all very warm, loose and languid and operates in similar sonic territory to some of Dego and Kaidi Tatham's productions. "Two" sees the mysterious artist turn his, her or their attention to broken beat, layering intergalactic synthesizer lines and drum machine handclaps atop a sub-heavy bassline and taught, bruk-up beats.

Review: It's been a hot minute since Scott Boutin graced us with his refined strain of electronic disco, but the Roam Recordings main man is back on Whiskey Pickle with more of his shimmering dancefloor delights. The lead synths on "Road To Hana" are pure joy, twinkling and bright like a well-lit disco ball. "6AM Again" switches the focus to some bassier synth lines with a warm Moog-y feeling, and while the name might suggest this is a wind down jam, really this track feels perfect for a smooth warm up too. "We Met At The Sun" completes the set with a house-oriented slant that could sit next to warmer strains of acid as much as Metro Area-esque disco.

Review: Constant Black make it clear they're committed to the tradition of minimal tech house with this mean ol' monster from Bodeler & Saenz. "Blumpted" has some necessary rise and falls throughout its run time, but it's really about that unrelenting, unapologetic deep and heavy beatdown. The stuff marathon set dreams are made of. "Panash" has plenty of bump of its own, with a little more tweaking going on in the synth department, while "Hobbs" widens things out with a few more melodic components and some flecks of sound design trickery in the mix.

Review: Most of the cuts showcased on the latest EP from Kai Alce's NDATL label - released in cahoots with Makin' Moves - have previously only been available digitally, while the others have never appeared at all. For that reason alone, the 12" is well worth checking out. Alce begins by offering up his warm, soulful and groovy vocal revision of Emdee Brown's "Again", before treating us to two versions of DJ Kemit and the Lounge Lizards' "Wake Up Stand" - a righteous vocal take and a "Hardubb" that brilliantly recasts it as a rolling late night bumper. Over on side B you'll find the broken beat/deep house fusion of Alce's rub of Malik Alston's "Promise Me Love" and a baggy, soulful and lilting rework of "Rise Up" by Wipe The Needle.

Review: Hot on the heels of the "Time & Space" album, Jorge Caiado is back on his home turf with a new 12" produced in tribute to his dearly departed dog Nasha. The dedication track is a beautiful slice of jazzy house with nimble key playing throughout, which Brawther takes in a deeper direction for his remix. "Tangram With My Sister" is a snappier affair with crisp drums and slick chords, and "Passeio Alegre" maintains the mellow flow with more plush keys and a tight beat. Even if it came from a sad place, Caiado sounds philosophical and even uplifting on this refined EP, positioning himself as one of the finest contemporary deep house producers in operation right now.

Eight years on from the first volume of retrospective gems from his modest but incredible catalogue, Guidance gather together another eight stunners that show just what an incredible talent this guy was. Bringing a level of expression and invention to deep house without losing a handle on the soul side of things, this is proof the genre can be true to itself and totally groundbreaking at the same time - a lesson a few more artists could take on board. Don't sleep on this double pack of wall to wall perfection.

Review: Over the last few years, Just Jack Recordings' releases have been sporadic to say the least, but what the label does put out is invariably of very high quality. That's certainly the case with this EP from Derek Carr, a producer whose melodic, life-affirming twists on Detroit futurism never fail to inspire. This time round he begins with the warm, evocative, dreamy and intricate "The Matter At Hand" before opting for a more hypnotic groove and bleeping, dubbed-out electronics on the arguably even better "A Hundred Dreams". Meanwhile, superb flipside "Vandalised" sits somewhere between electro, broken beat and vintage IDM, with Carr off-setting his usual ear-catching melodies with "Artificial Intelligence"-era Warp style beats.

Rooted in her dreamy but driving club sound but peppered with delicious downtempo diversions - see the Japanese-influenced new age minimalism of "Natura", the drowsy ambient bliss of "Sun Notification" and "Selected Ambient Works" style opaque fluidity of "Slow Wave" - "Tangerine" is a brilliant showcase for the Peach Discs founder's inimitable talents. There's a pleasant amount of variation amongst the killer club cuts too, with highlights including the intergalactic techno bounce of "Aqua Block", the mangled drum and bass mysticism of "Voz", the retro-futurist breakbeat garage bustle of "Want" and the dream house skip of "Sesame".

  1. Come Together (6:37)
  2. Digital Sound (6:21)
Review: The Helliker-Hales brothers are in fine form on their latest two-track missive on their In Dust We Trust imprint. A-side "Come Together" is perhaps a little bolder and more tech-tinged than their regular fare, with distinctive, alien-sounding lead lines, trance-like female vocal snippets and stabbing, warehouse-ready riffs rising over forthright drums and a chunky, retro-futurist bassline. If anything, "Digital Sound" is even heavier, with dub-wise vocal snippets, bleeping electronics and foreboding chords dancing around heavy tribal drums and the kind of muscular riffs that were once a hallmark of Junior Vasquez and Danny Tenaglia's mid-90s productions. In other words, it's a suitably sizable "big room" record.

Review: On this rare outing on Neroli, Chaos In The CBD has been joined by a wealth of friends and like-minded musicians. They first join forces with saxophonist and fellow kiwi jazz legend Nathan Haines and talented South London keys player Dave Koor aka Modified Man on A-side "Emotional Intelligence", a deliciously deep, positive and melodious affair rich in jaunty Clavinet riffs, simmering strings, smile-inducing chords and groovy, bongo-laden drums. On side B they offer up vocal and instrumental versions of "It's Up To Me". K. LaDawn, Joe Armon-Jones and Lee Pearson Jnr Collective are the guests this time round, and their contributions - hazy, soulful vocals, mazy electric piano solos, jaunty jazz-house drums and so on - help make the track a sensual, slow-burn dancefloor delight. Almost all Chaos In The CBD EPs are worth checking, but this one is extra-special.

Review: Those with long memories may just about remember Clyde. The East Midlands-based vocalist and producer released a clutch of soul-flecked fusions of deep house, broken beat, jazz, hip-hop and Detroit techno on Mantis Recordings between 2003 and 2009. Here his final single, 2009's previous digital-only "Roll The Beast", is given a belated vinyl release courtesy of his old pal Martin "Atjazz" Iveson. This time round, the original version - an inventive chunk of purple-coloured, glitch-sporting vocal deep house that portrays Clyde as Derby's answer to Prince - comes accompanied by two slick remixes (vocal and instrumental passes) from Iveson. His takes are deep, groovy, organic and fluid, with plenty of the spacey "astro" style flourishes we've come to expect from his tracks and remixes.

Review: Here's a heavyweight package for jazz-loving tech heads to get inspired by. Billy Cobham, surely one of the greatest jazz fusion drummers of all time, gives his excellent Drum N' Voice series over to some scene-leading electronic innovators to remix, rework or simply pay untold respect to. You can sense Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer were in full reverential mode when they delivered their stunning, viscerally live version of "Stratus". Lexx brings the smooth funk to "Sensations", MCDE drops some feel-good vibes on "Shining Sun", and Khidja gets nicely wigged-out over "Psychologic". What's not to love about a fusion project like this one?

  4. Mark Ambrose - "Machine Man" (5:58)
Review: Crayon take another trip into the realm of deep house with this split 12" from a range of talented individuals. D'Funk takes a little lick from Roy Ayers on "Follow Me" and frames the sample in spooky keys carried along by a sturdy four-to-the-floor thump. Adam Collins and Mark Ambrose get a bit freakier on "Modern Moule", using all kinds of oddball sounds to whip up a decidedly off-kilter mood. D'Funk's "Break For Jungle" takes a few cues from the hardcore continuum, and places them in the context of an uptempo house workout, and then Mark Ambrose completes the set with the amped up old-skool techno energy of "Machine Man".

Review: Joe Danvers-McCabe may have only been releasing music for a few years, but he has his fingers in many pies, from collabs like Mr Sunshine, Summits and Charlie Haplin to labels like Curve and WotNot Music. Having previously appeared on CoOp via the second installment of their "Selectors Assemble" series, he's back in the saddle with a full-blown EP that shines a light on his deft touch in the field of broken beat. From the soul-soaked crossover potential of "Devotional" (voiced incredibly by Natalie May) to the heads down, shuffling vibes of "The Flex", this is a gold-plated trip through that classic West London sound. Also peep the T. Williams guest spot on closing track "Calmer" - this is the real deal.
