Down That Road
Down That Road (hand-stamped 12" + insert 再プレス)
Cat: WB 009. Rel: 15 Jan 21
  1. Down That Road (6:45)
  2. Down That Road (Apiento & Tepper dubbed It) (6:59)
  3. Down That Road (Padapella) (6:02)
Review: Apiento is back on World Building with another excellently soul infused deep house gem that builds on the much loved "Things You Do For Love" 7". Subtle acid flecked bassline snakes in and out of the crisp drums as buttery smooth, heartbroken lyrics up top get you where it hurts. It's hugely sophisticated and absorbingly understated. Apiento & Tepper's dubbed out version recalls the early work of the one and only Larry Heard before a beatless Padapella closes things out for those who want to really make a dramatic emotional statement pre, mid or post-set.

Review:
One of the Motor City's hardest working producers is back! 7 Days Entertainment chief Big Strick presents Paper Chase, a four track EP featuring the sort of emotive, real proper deep house jams you have come to know and love from the man. From the glassy-eyed and bittersweet inner city soul of 'Detroit Domino', to the introspective 'Still Hustlin' and its rich tapestry of twisted analogue synth textures, and ending with what was undoubtedly the most surprising addition to the EP in the form of 'Deep Don't Die' - a droning and mentalist techno journey that would make even Mike Parker stand up and notice.

  1. Climax 1 (6:16)
  2. Climax 2 (6:19)
  3. Track 1 (6:57)
  4. Track 2 (5:52)
Review: Kerri Chandler has made a lot of terrific records over the years, but few are better than 1993's "Atmosphere EP", which in our opinion contains some of the most on-point "garage-house" (as it would have been called then) ever made. This yellow vinyl reissue proves our point: you'll struggle to find a more infectious fusion of New Jersey organ stabs, sparkling piano riffs and bumpin' club grooves than "Climax 1", or the tougher dub mix "Climax 2" for that matter (a revision made all the more alluring by Chandler's use of heady African vocal samples). The goodness continues on the flip, where the jazzy and immersive deep house warmth of "Track 1" is quickly followed by the Larry Heard-inspired brilliance of "Track 2" - a kind of tribute to "Can You Feel It" that features some dizzying piano solos from the hugely talented Chandler. In a word: essential.

INNATE 004 (12")
Cat: INN8 004. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. Aroy Dee - "Leegte" (5:29)
  2. Gilbert - "Furthest Planet" (7:26)
  3. Jonski - "Venusian Surface" (6:23)
  4. DJ Guy - "Aphelion Orbit" (5:56)
Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

Reckless Eyes (hand-stamped 1-sided 12")
Cat: DIGWAH 06. Rel: 22 Dec 20
  1. Reckless Eyes (6:56)
Review: The Digwah label deals in tech-house reworks of well-loved old cuts and the results are always well on point. They don't come on a regal basis but when they do they are well worth snapping up - and often sell out in quick fashion. The subject of this latest one is the one and only Sade, whose buttery vocals get layered into a nice deep, propulsive house grove that comes with none hues and last night chord work to sooth any floor. Yet again this is another essential 12" from this label, and as ever it's hand stamped one sided affair.

  1. DJ Deller - "Nobody Does It Better" (5:42)
  2. Heritage - "Dial Up" (4:27)
Review: Plastik People bring some more garage heat to their Ltd sublabel with the outstanding double hit of DJ Deller and Heritage. Deller is in control on the A side with the rolling breakstep funk of 'Nobody Does It Better', maximising on a soulful male vocal, killer hats and a Lately bassline to die for. On the flip, Heritage is a rougher affair that breaks the beat up and goes in hard on the wobbly subs, keeping things sparse and deadly for a surefire club weapon. It's a perfect foil to the upfront soul vibes of the A side, making this an incredibly useful record to pack for two vastly different reasons.

Review: 'Love Can't Turn Around' is one of the most enduring and pioneering hits in house music. It's an unabashed anthem with impassioned lyrics that drip with covert sexuality thanks to the forceful delivery of Darryl Pandy. His passion is offset by the sweetness of the backing singers, while crashing hits, big stabs and horn leads all power it along and cannot fail to get you in a sweat. Here it comes in all its definitive forms allowing you to serve it up however you see fit. Whichever version you chose, damage will ensue when you drop this one.

Review: Fred Everything is a long assured producer and a hallmark of real quality grooves. The Atjazz Record Company is similarly highly regarded, and for good reason, so this is a coming together well worthy of your attention. Opener 'Alone' is the sort of gorgeously lush and languid deep house groove that is perfect for cosy spaces. 'Phoenix' then ups the ante with delightfully skipping beats and perc, smeared pads and a cuddly vibe. 'Alone' then gets two remixes and the first, Po-lar-i-ty, is riddled with funky motifs and jazz keys and the second is a loopy tool of dusty beats.

Review: Anna Wall's The Bricks label continues to be a fine outlet for contemporary house, techno and breaks with this new missive from Inner Zone. It's his debut on the label and is a dreamy and nostalgic EP that looks back to a post-rave era and reimagines the beats of the day through a modern lens. Opener 'JV Sports' is pure Orbital bliss, 'Reality Grid' is a deeper and more introspective take, with crunchy beats and warped bass and then 'The Last Arpy' again takes off for another dimension with its far sighted chords and sleek hi hats. An Alec Falconer Madge E mix closes out with real drive and cosmic insight.

  3. Bright (Varhat remix) (9:58)
Review: Further proof of the current rude health of Paris's deep house scene arrives in the shape of another rock solid EP from prolific producer Mickael Jeanerret, AKA Janeret. The Bright E.P more than lives up to its' name, with the title track delivering a near perfect blend of bushy-eyed beats, ethereal pads, deep space riffs and fluttering, manipulated vocal samples. The EP's other original cut, "Rear", boasts similarly drifting chords, but also a tech-tinged beat pattern that's as bold and funky as they come. Rising star Varhat does a terrific job remixing "Bright", retaining Jeanerret's dub techno-inspired textures, whilst adding his own Syclops-inspired synth bassline.

Review: Red Ember Records main man Ewan Jansen may have been serving up dusty deep house and tactile dancefloor workouts since the late 1990s, but he's not released many full-length excursions. In fact, this outing Butter Sessions is his first longform release for nearly 16 years. It's a proper album, too, with the Perth-based producer using the opportunity to experiment with different rhythms, tempos and sounds whilst retaining his usual melodiousness and keen sense of atmosphere. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, off-kilter opener 'Mussel Hustle', the acid-flecked, early morning dancefloor fever dream 'Kooka', the melodious electro sea breeze of 'Watertable' and the mid-80s Japanese synth-pop/electrofunk eccentricity of 'Proteus vs Yoshimitsu'.

  2. Up We Go! (4:57)
  3. HEAVY (5:16)
  4. My Reflection (4:52)
Review: Moscow-based producer Alex Leyfa has been active for the best part of 10 years now, dropping albums on Local Talk and In-Beat-Ween as well as scores of EPs for City Fly, 4Lux, Soundofspeed, G.A.M.M. and many more. Now he's up on Lumberjacks with some choice cuts that show off his instinct for fluttering breakbeats as much as headsy house music, not least on the soaring, smooth delights of 'Good Thing!'. 'Up We Go!' rides another high grade break and chops up plenty of soul samples in the mix too, while 'HEAVY' explores a wilder broken beat terrain where you can almost visualise Leyfa getting creative on the MPC pads. 'My Reflection' completes the set with a seriously grooving house cut replete with loom bird samples and dreamy guitar licks.

Review: Italy's classy Neroli label brings more house goodness to kick off 2021 with this new EP from Chicago's own Lee Pearson Jr . Pearson is a vocalist, DJ, producer and lyricist who has previously, on numerous occasions, worked with the likes of Larry Heard. He is in fine form here with two gorgeous pieces of lush, spiritual deep house. 'Start Today' is pure gold, with cuddly pads and far sighted chords, then the Crispy Flutestrumental gets more new age and musical, Alton Miller goes deep and the final LPJC Drums remix is a little stripped back for more direct results.

Review: Honeycomb Music here offers up the first of Josh Milan's excellent new vinyl series, which is based on the Shapes, Color and Magic EP. It finds the cult producer explore some of the most innovative jazz and dance music rhythms you could wish to hear across just like 'Acts 2 and 4' which are late night and freaky jazz-tech jams of pure quality. 'The Plight Of The Square' slows down to a bubbly groove with loose perc and nice colourful melodic hits and '9 Pound Hammer' brings an epic rock vibe to house, somehow. It's pure Balearic bliss on closer 'First Graders.'

  1. Darkness Falls (7:56)
  2. Cascade (5:21)
  3. For Your Love (6:13)
  4. Bala (5:57)
Review: Misiu kicks off the Heads High label in style, building on a style first hinted at on an edit 12" for Razor N Tape back in 2016. The mood on 'Darkness Falls' is swooning and romantic, steeped in stirring string refrains, earworm analogue leads and a sweet, disco-licked groove. 'Cascade' has a more bumping house feel to it, replete with diva vocal hooks and a nagging organ line. 'For Your Love' is the peak time, sun down anthem of the record, dropping in some treasured vocal hooks and tasteful peaks and troughs of energy. The record rolls out on the lilting charms of 'Bala', which uses a more eclectic palette to deliver a very different feel to the other three tracks and leave the possibilities wide open for Misiu's next move.

Review: Second time around for Moodymann's sought after Telephone EP, which first appeared in stores way back in 2001. As with the original pressing, the A-side boasts a typically eccentric, percussively complex and attractive re-make of "Forevernevermore", where twinkling piano motifs and simmering easy listening string samples rise above a dense and bubby rhythm track. At a little over five minutes, it's notably shorter and punchier than the epic original version. Arguably even better is flipside "Telephone Blue", a wonderfully deep and jazzy outing that sees the legendary Detroiter get busy with a Fender Rhodes over a shuffling deep house beat.

Review: After just over two years out of the game, the overlooked Detroit Vinyl Room label - a stable previously responsible for unleashing some superb deep house - has finally sprung back into action. The Collision EP is a multi-artist affair with many must-check highlights, with our picks including the drowsy, tech-tinged late night deep house hypnotism of 'Stick An Move (Cobo Mix)' by Gary Romalis, the distant, jackin'-in-space acid squelch of Jnn Apprl's 'Insecure Alien', the ultra-deep and trippy, early morning haziness of Isaac Prieto's brilliantly odd and angular 'Late Night', and the horizontal, sofa-bound instrumental hip-hop of MGUN's blazed 'Shadows'. Last year's excellent Strawberry Jam EP has now been followed up by the Pineapple Jam 12", featuring an all new cast of house hopefuls with plenty to say. Zito Mowa's 'Ndo Neta' and Replika's 'On My Mind' twist up dusty piano samples and lo-fi drums in artful loops that draw you right into their atmospheric sound worlds. Sune & Vitamin D bring a rhythmically snappy but sonically smoky combo to 'Coastal', and 'Awesomeness' by Iner has some fun with a classic Commodores sample and some powerful piano chops.

Review: As part of their 15th anniversary celebrations, Sushitech has decided to reissue Mosaic Classics, a 2008 collection of late 1990s works from legendary British techno producer Steve O'Sullivan, this time on clear vinyl. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth picking up. Check first the early British tech-house-goes-dub-techno hypnotism of 'Cheques Not Accepted', before admiring the sub-heavy late-night skank of 'Touch Up' and the bongo-rich pleasantness of deep techno roller 'Breezer' (itself a collaboration with John Beer'). Also worth a listen is the chunkier and sweater - but nevertheless spacey - 'No Suzuki', which was originally released under the Blue Spirit alias, and the pumping, stargazing thump of 'Sac Magique' (as Wise Caucasian).

For this one he takes two classics from the jazz-disco world and adds his own distinctive spins. The results soar into the stratosphere on golden chords and humid pads, funky drums and gliding grooves. Both are timeless reworks that will do plenty of damage on a wide range of dance floors. Review: Cardiology get serious yet again on their fourth outing with The Owl taking a break from his self-titled label to follow up February's Universal Funk with some further sizzling edits. First up is a twist on Mad Dog Fire Department's classic party starter "Cosmic Funk", which gets a tasteful house thump to amp up the dancefloor impact of the track. "Ms Brown" is a big singalong belter with a beat to match, while "We Do It" smooths things out with a slinky vibe that translates well to another forthright 4/4 bump. "Fresh Groove" finishes the record off in a steamy, hazy groove that will take the dancers deeper in, without a doubt.

Review: Aesthetic stride into 2021 with more of that surefooted, stripped back dancefloor finery that makes them a buy-on-sight for serious minimal house heads. Relic is at the controls this time around, leading in style with the sombre keys and snappy rhythms of 'H'. On the flip, 'I' has a more airy feel to it thanks to artfully sculpted atmospheric tones that linger around the crisp and shuffling beat. 'J' calls to mind some of the dubbier micro house of the mid 00s era with its sliced up, twitchy samples and nagging groove, complementing the other two floor burners on this high grade 12" perfectly.

Like its' predecessor, See You When You Get There takes a widescreen approach to deep house, with the German duo drawing on a myriad of influences, from jazz ("Hey Stranger"), soundtracks ("Crystal Maze") and evocative downtempo beats (the impeccable title track), to Atmosfear-ish jazz-funk ("The Most Beautiful Divorce In The World") and, most notably, classic Balearica (see the druggy pop of "Hyuwee" and deliciously slow "EOS Place". Best of all, though, is "Never Forget", a glorious blues-house epic laden with smoky vocal samples and thrilling piano motifs.

Review: The journey of intrigue on Secretsundaze continues unabated as they welcome Lisbon-born, London-based producer Silvestre to the label. He'd previously dropped bombs on Meda Fury, Diskotopia and Padre Himalaya, and now he's bringing an unconventional flair to the Sundaze crew in line with the ear-snagging leftfield club fare they've been tapping into of late. Cheeky samples, analogue synth wriggles and snagging breaks are all par for the course, but more crucially there's a warm and gritty flavour to all the tracks that makes them stand out from so many pristine modern mixdowns. Classy, inventive stuff from a talented producer on the rise.

The Spell
The Spell (12" 再プレス)
Cat: DIREC 009. Rel: 13 Jan 21
  1. The Spell (Burial remix) (7:57)
  2. The Spell (Charles Webster dub) (6:54)
  3. The Spell (Charles Webster vocal remix) (7:00)
Review: Almost two decades have passed since Charles Webster's last solo album, the largely overlooked collection of hushed deep house and downtempo soul gems, Born on the 24th July. Soon he'll finally release a follow up, Decision Time, but first he's treating us to a teaser single, 'The Spell'. Webster's vocal and dub mixes - the former featuring the seductive spoken word vocals of poet Ingrid Chavez - are typically immersive, ultra-deep house affairs that combine analogue electronic instrumentation with hazy, crackling aural textures that come courtesy of surprise collaborator Burial, who cites Webster's sound design as a major influence. Arguably the most striking mix though comes from that man Burial, whose A-side interpretation is drowsy, deep, crackly and irresistibly opaque: an artistic marriage made in heaven and then some.

  2. Backwards Run (8:28)
  3. Bangin Out (7:20)
Review: Puglia-based NICEPEOPLE return with a new one by Windy City veteran Boo Williams, who celebrates a very fine week with this release alongside the reissue of his classic 'The Undertaker' from '95. The LOL EP is Williams at his finest, with a nod to sounds of the past yet effective dance floor sounds from one of the heroes of the scene. From the boompty-shakin' party vibe of the title track, to the hypnotic electronic disco sounds of 'Backwards Run' on the A side, followed by 'Bangin Out' on the flip with its positive deepness - Williams delivers a stand out genre melding EP.

  1. The Undertaker (6:35)
  2. Last Call (6:45)
  3. Kickin' (7:05)
  4. Feel The Drive (7:57)
Review: Boo Williams started Boo Moonman Records at the tail end of 2019 and it presents the label's fifth release here in the form of a much needed reissue. Features 'The Undertaker' with its frantic percolator jack which is a zeitgeist of The Windy City's hard house sound of the mid-90s made popular by Cajmere's Relief Records - the very label where the EP originally appeared. 'The Last Call' is exactly the kind of boompty deep house you've come to know and love from the legendary producer, as is the late night bangin' basement jam 'Feel The Drive' capturing the distinct zeitgeist of Chicago during its most seminal moment.
