  4. Superbass #2 (5:32)
  5. Walls (5:36)
  6. Transphat (5:07)
Review:  Given its title, you might expect Aaron K's second vinyl outing to be filled with forthright, sub-heavy sleaze. While there's some weighty low-end pressure to be found - especially on the sparse, dubbed-out delights that are 'Superbass 1' and 'Superbass 2' - for the most part the EP delivers blends of atmospheric, analogue deep house and jacking acid house that prioritise mood and melody over significant bass-weight. It's a fusion that works really well throughout, with highlights including the subtle electro influences and deep, spaced-out riffs of 'Transphat', the picturesque, arpeggio-driven melodies of 'Folding Arps', the jaunty deep acid of 'Everyone in the Pool (Filtered Mix)', and the cosmic late night hypnotism of 'Walls'.

My People (Love Can Live Forever)
  1. My People (Love Can Live Forever) (5:02)
  2. My People (Love Can Live Forever) (dub mix) (5:01)
Review: Get your hands in the air and wave them about like you just don't care, because this is exactly the sort of tune that will make you do that. It's built on huge old school referencing breakbeats, with just as retro piano chords layered over the top. Add in some twitchy acid sounds, slamming drums and a lung-busting diva vocal and you have an irresistible, festival sized house anthem that will unite all dancers in raptures. On the flip is a dub for those who like something slightly more subtle, but it still bangs like a heavyweight with her back against the ropes.

The Movement EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SELBLM. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Kai Alce - "Hear The Waves" (5:28)
  2. Demuir - "Furacao Dento" (7:15)
  3. Nick Holder - "America" (6:28)
  4. 83 West - "My Sound (redux)" (6:56)
Review: All proceeds and profits from this new drop on Selections will be donated to Black Lives Matter charities, making it an even more appealing offer beyond the sheer quality of the house heads gathered together here. The mighty Kai Alce leads the charge with the sweet and bumping 'Hear The Waves', which is followed up by the punchy but warm 'Furacao Dento' by Demuir. Nick Holder opens the B side up with a killer slice of broken beat house, all crooked percussion locked into a deep, rolling groove. 83 West finishes the record off with a teasing, slow-release heater that keeps the energy simmering throughout - a masterfully executed cut to hold the dancefloor under a spell.

  4. Empting
  5. Duck Tape (Goddard remix)
Review: Alps 2 come to Ad Hoc with a sound that will get a whole lot of listeners feeling misty eyed for good times in well-stocked festival tents. There are unmistakable whiffs of Floating Points and Four Tet in the likes of 'Burnt', which positively emit vitamin D vibes out of the speakers, so infectious is the summery mood contained within those luscious synths. 'Arnda E' has a deeper, knottier quality but it's still a resolutely sweet track, while 'Duck Tape' heads into more fractured territory with a chopped up RnB vocal that calls back to the heyday of future garage. 'Empting' completes this effervescent EP with a more abstract piece that showcases the variety at this breakthrough producer's disposal.

Baara (reissue)
Cat: 557119-1. Rel: 21 Oct 20
  1. Baara
  2. Ja Pense A Toi
Review: Amadou et Mariam is a Malian duo made up of Mariam Doumbia (vocals) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals). They are a couple and both are blind musicians who met at Mali's Institute for the Young Blind. They came together through a shared love of music and have put out no fewer than 15 albums. 'Baara' from 2009 on Sacred Rhythm proved one of their biggest hits and now fetches high sums on Discogs. This reissue is a welcome one featuring the title track - a joyous mix of live afro drumming, vocal chants and freewheeling melodies, and the touching 'Ja Pense A Toi,' with its pained male leads, desert blues and aching guitar solos. Lovely stuff.

  1. Just (6:13)
  2. Celeste (6:01)
  3. Back 2 U (Tranz dub) (7:45)
Review: Belfast pair Bicep are smart operators. Having previously doffed a cap to both Italian house and classic New Jersey garage, recent releases have seen them play around with a variety of rhythmic patterns and more advanced musical elements. They're at it again here on their latest outing for Aus. Opener "Just" is pleasingly cheery, with simple but addictive electronic melodies and sweeping chords nestling above a head-nodding, hip-hop influenced groove. "Celeste" is undeniably Balearic, with sun-kissed pianos, dreamy pads and drifting vocal samples stretching out over delay-laden, African-influenced percussion. Finally, they return to their rush-inducing best on "Back 2 U (Tranz Dub)", a loving fusion of vintage progressive house builds, winding melodies and mid '90s beats.

Review: Munich's Public Possession label returns with an lovely EP by new London-based outfit Birthday. The pop duo was founded in 2016 by RIP Swirl & Fake Laugh. Having had some great feedback on their first releases, they took a break to focus on their solo projects and other endeavours in and around the music industry, but make their comeback on Powerhouse. With the sweet as candy ditties like "Slug", to hazy and vaporised drifters like 'Locally Lost' or moments of sublime weirdo humour as heard on 'Chocolate For Breakfast' this could well be the most awesome comedown album of 2020.

Rainbows (1-sided 12")
Cat: BM 1. Rel: 30 Nov 20
  1. Rainbows (7:27)
Review: If you're brave enough to put out a one sided, one track 12" you better make sure it's good. Thankfully, Black Motion aka Robert Bongani Mohosana & Thabo Roy Mabogwane do that with 'Rainbow', a tune so lush that it fully deserves being presented in this way. It first came on a digital EP on Defected back in 2017 but sounds just as fresh today: the wavy drums are afro-tinged, pianos lave teasel in their wake and shakers and various other percussive sounds bring the groove to life. Of course, Xoli M's spine tingling vocal is what really brings the whole thing to life.

Cat: LXMXK 03. Rel: 17 Nov 20
  1. Preach On Sunday (8:27)
  2. Can I Get Ahhm (7:15)
Review: Run by Swiss house maestro Alex Storrer, the Lexx Music imprint returns with Nikita Elmer aka Bocab: a trumpeter and producer whose previous work was more centered around hip-hop styles, but here moves into purist deep house in impressive fashion. The sombre yet soulful (and dusty!) Detroit vibe of 'Preach On Sunday' will no doubt bear comparisons to the Three Chairs sound, but it is still a compliment as far as we're concerned. On the flip, things take a more optimistic turn on the lo-slung, slo-mo, feel good emotions of "Can I Get Ahhm".

  2. Danny Faber - "Hampi" (7:10)
  3. Phonique, Fairplay - "Zatar" (6:45)
  4. Martin Waslewski - "Dimensionen" (6:36)
Review: Berlin's Bar 25 was a real haven in the German party capital. It's reputation lives on strong in the label releases, the latest of which is a celebratory various artist affair. Kiki kicks things off with a heads down tech house stomper that undulates just enough to keep you in the groove.
Danny Faber's 'Hampi' is a headier affair, with suspensory synths keeping you locked on edge and then Phonique and Fairplay link for the more tribal and mysterious sounds of 'Zatar'. Closing out this party-ready EP is Martin Waslewski with the far-gazing chords and twinkling retro future keys of 'Dimensionen.'

Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk label has now been releasing music for 15 years. As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.

  1. Opticamente Avanzando (11:53)
  2. OP.AV (6:26)
  3. Planos De Ausencia (Casualidad mix) (3:59)
Review: After the outstanding Devious EP from the label bosses, Secretsundaze is back with a new 12" from emergent Dominican artist Boundary. Once again, there's a vitality and urgency to the tracks the label is pushing, finding in Boundary a thread of inventive techno that sounds fresh and authentic at the same time. 'Opticamente Avanzando' surges with a Detroit grittiness, ethereal pad swoops and a sizzling carnival atmosphere, stitched together in a masterful, dense mix perfect for peak time transcendence. 'OP.AV' takes things deeper, letting a cascade of synth motifs fall around a nagging, break-embellished rhythm section. 'Planas De Ausencia (Causalidad Mix)' is a striking departure into fractured ambient electronica, where the beats fall apart and slide into new grooves around blissful swathes of melancholy melody. Classy stuff, which should appeal to lovers of vintage techno as well as those craving something new.

Review: It's five years since we last heard from Brad Peterson, but now the former Moods & Grooves regular is back with a new astral traveller for the deep house crew. 'Expansion' opens the Plant Life EP up in style with a sturdy groove carrying illustrious brushstrokes of percussion and keys, all bathed in a hazy glow that could sound transcendental in the morning light. 'Star Traveller' takes a more deep-rooted, mellow path for lounge-ready scenarios where it's the head that wants to be moved by the music. 'Machine Logic' lays down a tougher kind of beat, but offsets it with swooping pads and chords and then 'Sun Garden' closes the EP out in a gorgeous reverie of tumbling drums and lilting flute.

  5. Inter-Oger (4:19)
Review: Here comes the second chapter of Dactylonomy, a 12 inch pentalogy from the weird and wonderful mind of French rule-breaker Pepe Bradock. He actually opens up with one of his more straight forward house jams - a deep, shuffling affair mired in heavy filter use. It's on the reverse that he serves up twisted melodies, jazzy groove made of broken loops and detached cosmic ambient interludes that are awash with gorgeous chords and sci-fi details. 'Danske Mansus' is a highlight with its freaky after party feels, while 'Pitcher' could be a Moodymann jam for the way it is so brilliantly loose and expertly sampled.

  3. Tender Games - "Energy" (7:14)
  4. Marc Brauner - "One Night In Paris" (6:18)
Review: New label Nostalgics was founded with an admirable aim, namely to, "take the mood and sounds of the past and present and create music for the future". That ethos is certainly evident on this opening EP from founder Marc Brauner and pal Tender Games. Brauner's opening gambit, 'I Got What U Want', sits somewhere between vintage US deep house, turn-of-the-90s Italian house and the futurist shimmer of early UK tech-house. Tender Games delivers a sonically denser and more bustling interpretation of that track, before offering-up a cut of his own: the fluid pianos, shimmering synths and proto-house grooves of 'Energy'. Brauner returns to round things off with 'One Night In Paris', a classic-sounding deep house number reminiscent of the material showcased on the My Love is Underground label.

  1. Luther 2 (Caserta & The Gang mix) (5:25)
  2. Luther 2 (Caserta & Natasha Diggs Incense dub) (5:32)
Review: Last year Caserta and friends had their wicked way with a classic Luther Vandross acapella, brilliant re-framing the soul maestro in a late 1980s NYC club style. A year on they're at it again on 'Luther 2', which naturally repurposes another superb performance from the legendary vocalist. On the A-side, Vandross's vocal rides a smooth revivalist disco groove created by an all-star cast including Serge Gamesbourg (bass) and Natasha Diggs (piano, Fender Rhodes). It's a genuinely impressive revision that sounds like it could have been recorded sometime in the early 1980s (despite being made during lockdown). Diggs plays an even bigger role on the flip, a hazy and groovy deep house version in which she adds her own sassy spoken word vocals in reaction to the Vandross acapella.

  1. The Way It Goes (Chris Stussy remix) (8:08)
  2. The Way It Goes (Chris Stussy dub) (6:38)
Review: A few years back Kerri Chandler joined forces with Troy Denari to deliver "The Way It Goes", a superbly soulful club cut based on the legendary house producer's iconic 1993 workout "Track 1". Here it gets a new slant courtesy of Chris Stussy, a Dutch producer with releases on some of the world's most noted deep house labels to his name. Stussy makes great use of Denari's slick, soulful vocal on his A-side remix, which showcase some spacey, echoing synthesizer motifs and the most jazzy and squelchy synth-bass part known to man, woman or child. He toughens things up and raises the intensity a notch on the flipside dub mix, which naturally makes greater use of the spacey synth motifs and a few other tech-tinged musical flourishes.

  1. Trust Is Key (5:40)
  2. Observe (4:50)
  3. Midnight In Peckham (7:02)
  4. Luxury Motivation (5:51)
Review: Chaos In The CBD have quietly been building an impressive reputation for some time, with releases on Hot Haus, Amadeus and Needwant all hitting the spot. Here they transfer to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International with what's arguably their most mature and musically expansive EP to date. There's a decidedly dusty, eyes-closed deep house feel throughout, with hypnotic grooves laden with all manner of neat, often jazz inspired touches. This is perhaps most obvious on the St Germain style jazz-house goodness of "Observe" - all skipping cymbals, bouncy grooves and killer pianos - but can also be found on the deeper "Observe". It's there, too, on the lilting brilliance of "Midnight In Peckham" - think yearning trumpets and twinkling piano motifs - and the blissful "Luxury Motivation".

Never On A Rainy Sunday (12" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: USELESS 001. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Whatever You Hear Tonight
  2. Never On A Rainy Sunday
Review: Plak Records founder Chaton uses all his serious know how to start this new vinyl only label having closed Plak in 2014. Called Useless Transmissions, it opens its account with deep house that is anything but. The mood is melancholic throughout, but never too mopey. 'Whatever You Hear Tonight' is crisp and dynamic, but with nice worn synth sounds and frayed edges that feel aged and lived in. Hooky synths and dreamy pads add scale and emotional depth that make for lush listening. 'Never On A Rainy Sunday' is deep, too, but with more curious motifs passing by like fireflies. The analogue drum work is deft and delicious.

Review: After a two-year absence, former Perpetual Rhythms regular Victor Aguinaga AKA Chicagodeep is back on wax. This in itself is a reason to be cheerful, because the Argentinian producer is capable of crafting the kind of richly musical and effortlessly atmospheric deep house more often associated with the likes of Larry Heard and Ron Trent. He's in prime form throughout Trax Exhibition, seductively sashaying between hypnotic, acid-flecked early morning haziness ('Stray Hay'), piano solo-sporting house-not-house brilliance ('Erosion'), intense but loose limbed, Dolo Perussion-style drum workouts ('Break Tree') and shimmering, synth-heavy deep house bliss ('Last Stand').

Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions series rolls on with a fourth of six parts. It's proven a real gold mine so far, with endless amounts of gospel tinged house and super spiritual grooves getting all who hear it to a high state of consciousness. There are plenty of jazzy overtones to the opener here, 'Come Sunday', which is laden with afro percussion and big horns. It's a steel drum affair on Pheeroan Aklaff 's 'L' that is brilliantly tropical, then there's trident funk from The Kay-gees and a lush bit of fusion from the ever excellent Leroy Hutson.

Review: Record Store Day 2020 has seemingly gone on forever this year, but that is no bad thing. The latest treasure it is seeing up is this reissue of Corporation Of One's 'So Where Are You' from all the way back in 1989. 'The Real Life' is a seamless fusion of electro, house and something else entirely with its iconic Queen sample smudged and smeared over a tripped out club beat and mad melodic phrases. The title track is a perfect deep, lo-fi and early deep house classic with spine tinging vocals then a Hashish dub gets all new age and nimble on its feet. These are old school sounds but they are still brilliant.

  1. Acid Agah (original 1994 dubplate mix)
  2. Rani (edit)
  3. Nachdi Drums (edit)
  4. Balle Shava (edit)
Review: The Masaala label are laying claim to a unique curio from the '90s here, unearthing the forgotten sounds of Cutmaster Singh from Leicester. This largely unknown DJ was amongst those trying to fuse acid house and bhangra, and on this 12" we're treated to a selection of edits that do a mighty fine job of crossing the cultural divide to bring the infectious energy of Indian music into a dancefloor context. First up is a dubplate from 1994 titled 'Acid Agah', which rides a bubbling 303 and resplendent strings to create a jaw-dropping showpiece. 'Rani' is steeped in bashy '80s drums and more of that lysergic throbbing, offset by a stunning female vocal, while 'Nachdi Drums' unsurprisingly leans in hard on percussion to whip up a frenetic energy that is as much techno as it is bhangra. 'Balle Shava' takes things back to a kind of new beat freakiness which will appeal to old-skool diggers looking for something spicy in their sets.

Review: There is no producer named Manuel Darquart; in fact, it's a long-distance collaboration between two up-and-coming studio buffs, Louis Anderson-Rich and Sean Whittaker. Their latest EP, a first, high-profile outing on Wolf Music, is simply superb. It sees the pair offer-up a trio of loved-up, saucer-eyed cuts that draw heavily on the sunrise-ready colour of early Italian dream house, the ricocheting machine drums of proto-house and the tactile dreaminess of late 80s New Jersey deep house. Our pick is Don Carlos-esque opener 'Keep It Dxy', though the more Balearic 'Miranda' and bubbly 'Parkour' are not far behind. The EP also boasts a fine bonus in the shape of Medlar's extra-percussive 'Timbales Dub Mix' of 'Parkour', a more intense but no less huggable interpretation tailor-made for peak-time dancefloors.

Review: Landing on a hand-stamped, blue marble and limited edition 12" are four more deep and dubbed out house tunes from the latest instalment of Mireia's We'll Sea series. Das Komplex kicks off with a serious aqueous rhythm drenched in waves of synth with a pained vocal sample that really makes it stick in your mind. Tecwaa knocks it back even further to a slow motion underwater dub current that gently moves you to a state of bliss. 'Nebula' from Achim Maerz is more upright and upbeat, with bright chords shining through the vast groove caverns as neat chords dance up top. 'Sky Waves' closes out in warm, rough edged lo-fi deep house fashion.

  2. Testify (KDA extended remix) (6:20)
  3. Testify (Danny Krivit edit) (6:02)
  4. Testify (Alan Dixon remix) (6:57)
Review: Had it not been for the cursed pandemic, Davie's 'Testify' - a righteous fusion of neo-soul, gospel and nu-disco - would have been an anthem throughout the many festivals dotted around the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Here the superb original is twisted into even more celebratory new dancefloor shapes across another essential EP. Mousse T sets the tone by turning it into a jazzy, percussive and stomping chunk of disco-house pleasure, before KDA re-imagines it as a thrusting, hard-edged house loop jam that wisely showcases Davie's inspired bassline. Over on the flip, Danny Krivit gets out his scalpel and successfully extends the mid-tempo original, while Alex Dixon pops a pill or two and reworks it into a rushing piano-house special.

Review: Diego Cortez Salas is DJ and producer from Brussels that has been making waves in recent times with some awesome releases for imprints such as Live At Robert Johnson, Correspondent and River Rapid. His new one comes courtesy of new Parisian label Slowciety, featuring more of his trademark blend of classic Balearic house and dark disco. Opening with the moody Italo influenced groove of 'Exquisite Chaos' and the strobe-lit euphoria of 'Undivided' with its infectious 303 acid throughout (there's an epic remix by Frankfurt legend Roman Fluegel later on, too). Things take a more ominous turn on the flip, with the neon-lit dancefloor drama of 'Forgotten Memories' and its muscular EBM bassline.

Cat: HR7S 185. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. When It Feels Right (4:44)
  2. When It Feels Right (Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:06)
Review: Japan's DJ Kawasaki links up with Monday Michuru for a new house come disco tune that is full of big vocal delights. The funky riffs are knotted and infectious, the rickety rhythm section nice and loose and the synth motifs all filled with charm and colour, It's a perfectly feel good tune that will make you dance any woes away. On the flip, New York legend and Kind of the Edits, Danny Krivit steps up with an extended edit that is jam packed with noodling piano solos and a more bristling, Latin tinged percussive element.

  3. Black Box Riddle (5:30)
  4. Sector 100 (4:35)
Review: Two years on from his last outing under the DJ Snils alias, Oleg Buyanov AKA Ol buddies up with pal Every Korner (real name Roman Erikona) to help launch the Save the Books label. The Moscow-based pair apparently recorded the four tracks at various points over the last few years. There's an undeniably Balearic feel to proceedings throughout, from the dreamy pads, twittering loon bird samples and new age ambient melodies of 'Intro', to the jazz-flecked Italian dream house drowsiness of luscious and life-affirming closing cut 'Sector 100'. In between you'll find the bustling 'Take Money', where sampled piano motifs and huggable chords ride a chunky, bass-heavy groove, and the sunny broken beat/jazz-funk/deep house fusion of 'Black Box Riddle'.

Decoded Satellite
Cat: DENT 010. Rel: 09 Nov 20
  1. DJ Sotofett & Skatebard - "Decoded Satellite" (9:30)
  2. Lauer & DJ Sotofett - "Privat & Scharf" (DJ Sotofett Synth-Dub-Mix) (9:19)
Review: Skatebard's Digitalo Enterprises label hits release number 20 with the boss himself linking up with felt cult hero DJ Sotofett for one tune, while the oddball producer also goes solo on a remix. Italian dance music is very much in focus here but as seen through a new, weird and wonderful lens. 'Decoded Satellite' distills menacing synth drones with a pounding groove and Italo disco synths are stripped of all joy and repurposed as prowling late night miscreants. Flip it over for a much more airy and libidinous DJ Sotofett Synth-Dub-Mix of Lauer & DJ Sotofett's 'Privat & Scharf.' Serious stuff.

Cat: PUSS 20204. Rel: 25 Nov 20
  1. Bernie D'Agostino (5:25)
  2. Go With The Flow (HMT VIP) (5:37)
Review: Kornel Kovacs and HNNY's Puss imprint has another brilliantly unhinged offering here with DJ Space Heater making what appears to be his debut release. The a-side is a speed garage flip with forceful drums and speech excerpts spliced in next to sentinel vocal breaks. It's silly, but seriously fun. 'Go With The Flow' (HMT VIP) takes care of the B-side and is a funky beat with a pained male vocal and warped synth spin back sounds. It's another mad use of a vocal sample that in the wrong hands would be terrible, but is here oh so right.
