Review: End of Level Boss Records is a joint project from Tusk and Cyclonix celebrating the world of video game technostalgia through electronic music. End Of Level Boss 1 Ganondorf. Ganondorf is the humanoid form of Ganon, the ultimate embodiment of evil and hatred, the nemesis of Link, and the final boss in many of the Legend of Zelda games. Ganondorf is a formidable sorcerer and a shapeshifter. His hatred is so intense that he can survive even the total obliteration of his body and remain conscious. An ultimate bad ass.

  3. Lady Blacktronika - "Can We Still Be Friends?" (7:05)
  4. DJ Aakmael - "Transit" (5:58)
Review: Given that Croatia's Dimensions Festival is one of the most consistently on-point electronic music events around, it figures that their new off-shoot label should regularly hit the spot, too. Certainly, the early signs are good. This second sampler single impresses from start to finish. Occasional L.I.E.S artist Marcos Cabral kicks things off with a fine chunk of fluid, underwater deep house ("Prochainement"), before Byron The Aquarius reaches for the talkbox on the sumptuously deep, soulful, jazz-funk influenced house bliss of "Full Moon". Lady Blaktronika gets things going on side B with the groovy, late night Detroit deep house bump of "Can We Still Be Friends". Arguably best of all, though, is the dreamy, jammed-out analogue deep house warmth of DJ Akmael's "Transit".

Review: It was the best part of 10 years ago when Jorge Caiado was making some strong early steps on the mighty Balance, and here he is delivering a full-length for Groovement that's been seven years in the making. "Time & Space", as the name might suggest, look beyond the demands of the dance to explore a broader perspective of electronic music. Don't let the swooning ambient opener fool you though, there's plenty of Caiado's signature smooth as silk house to sip on too. "Nasha's Groove" is especially satisfying, while "Magic Carpet" brings a little salsa to the table. With soul, ambience, funk and freshness all rolled into one package, Caiado's long-winded album journey has been entirely worth it.

  2. My System (6:28)
  3. No Drama (6:11)
  4. Gazette (6:23)
Review: Frazer Campbell has been on a prolific run since first emerging in 2016, showcasing a keen instinct for sleek, refined deep house with a techy edge. This drop on Counterfeit Soul shows off the expressive expansive of Campbell's sound, leading in with the punchy "Don't Leave Me Honey D" and following it up with the fluttering melancholy of "My System". "No Drama" brings further Detroit influences to bear on Campbell's sturdy tech house beats, and then "Gazette" rounds the EP out with yet more accomplished machine soul musings. Immaculately produced and engineered for maximum club impact, this record looks set to get plenty of peak time floors strutting the good stuff this summer.

  5. You Got Me Going (2:04)
Review: For the first release of 2020 on his much admired Underground Quality imprint, Jus-Ed has decided to champion a previously unheard talent: Berlin-based graphic designer turned DJ/producer Nathalie Capello. There's much to admire across the five-track EP, which sees Capello deliver a quintet of dope and dusty deep house cuts shot through with sparkling references to classic house and US garage styles of old. Piano-sporting vocal opener "Come Into My Life (featuring Rose Lonergan)" is particularly special - sun-kissed, gently breezy brilliance - but then so are broken garage number "Get It Right (HW Jam)" and the stab-happy, turn-of-the-90s rave revivalism of "Receiving Mode". Superb stuff!

  1. Never Come Back (Four Tet remix) (7:57)
  2. Never Come Back (Morgan Geist remix) (7:25)
Review: When Caribou, Four Tet and Morgan Geist appear on the same 12", you know it's going to be huge. And it is. First up, Kieran Hebdan takes "Never Come Back" and warps the bass, builds plenty of tense percussive energy and layers in some sci-fi synths that take the track into the next dimension. It's epic, as is always the way with Hebden, and ripe for some rave reactions. Cult neo-disco innovator Morgan Geist does something completely different - his drums skip and ping, with a breathy and soul drenched vocal next to lush cosmic chords. It's bouncy, playful, brilliant.

Review: SlothBoogie, the London-based record label are back with their fifth instalment in their edit series. These lo-slung disco jams are exactly the sort of business you can expect their DJ crew to be throwing down at their much loved party series. First up we have Carlo with the super sexy and looped-up guitar licks of "Jumba Jooki" followed by Melbourne's Cassettes For Kids with the late night deepness of "No More Faith". On the flip, Luvless from Leipzig gets that Robsoul sound happening on "The First Aid Manual" and Bondi Bondi (from Buenos Aires, actually!) gets that neon-lit boogie down vibe in full effect on the soulful "Dinner 4-2".

Review: Slum Science's Hudd Traxx is a label that just won't quit when it comes to proper, head-tripping house music for those who like their grooves serious. That makes Chris Carrier a natural participant, and the unstoppable Frenchman steps up here with a record that proves both his and the label's long-lasting appeal. "Cycle Psycho" is a simmering tech house belter with the requisite amount of funk rubbed into its limbs, while "Dimension 5" switches stance for a nagging acid workout. On the flip "Smoke And Flesh" brings a tougher thrust to the drums and then "Flying Sausage" cools the EP down with a simply fantastic deep house bump to get heads nodding all over the butchers shop.

Review: The ever prolific Chris Carrier teams up with Spanish outfit Rhythm & Soul for the fifth record on Jus Groove It, and as you would expect the tracks come on classy and nicely tripped out. "Fasten Your Seatbelts" leads the charge with its mechanical set of drums and subtle tones and FX making this a DJ tool par excellence, while "Pilote Automatique" holds down a more swinging groove while adhering to the same mantra of reduced, DJ-friendly production. It's not all strict club sounds though, as "Sphere#2" demonstrates with its abstract synthesizer loping as a pleasant finishing touch to the record.

  2. Luther (Caserta's Henry Street mix) (5:10)
Review: Hot on the heels of a re-work of Bobby Caldwell, edit stylist Caserta is back with another golden nugget. This time he turns his attention to the one and only Luther Vandross and serves up two equally essential but very different tunes that pay homage to his unique voice. The King Street Mix is all hip swinging claps and nodding bass riffs that are organic and heartfelt, whereas the Henry Street Mix nods to the '90s heyday of New York. With warm neon organ stabs that will get any floor pumping, both interpretations have Luther's soulful voice front and centre.

  1. Marvin (Casey Mistake mix) (5:02)
  2. Marvin (dub That Got Away) (5:05)
Review: Having previously worked his magic on classic cuts from Diana Ross, Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass - among others - Bridge Boots boss Caserta has now moved on to Marvin Gaye. He's grabbed the acapella from a classic song - in this case one of Gaye's duets with Diana Ross, "My Mistake (Was To Love You)"- and incorporated it into a brand new track. The A-side "Casey Mistake Mix" sits somewhere between early '80s boogie and the mid-80s proto-house sound created by Boyd Jarvis, Timmy Regisford and Paul Simpson. Interestingly, Gaye and Ross's vocals fit it like a glove. The flipside "Dub That Got Away" is an altogether more bumpin' garage-house workout rich in cut-up vocals snippets and wobbly analogue bass.

Review: Brooklyn label Razor N Tape is becoming increasingly well regarded in the edit community, returning here with their tenth release and it's an introduction for newcomer Caserta. Those who scour Soundcloud on the reg will be familiar with Boston-based Caserta who's been throwing up examples of his edit expertise on the orange and white place for the past year. Six tracks deep, the Dynamics EP shows Caserta's style incorporates thumping sample-laden hip-hop grooves, nu disco and bumping old-school house. Furthermore there's a deftness to his touch on cuts such as "Nobody Believed" and "All My Dreams" that sets Caserta apart.

Cat: BB 45005. Rel: 12 Feb 20
  1. Teddy (Caserta's Rooftop mix) (4:50)
  2. Teddy (Caserta's Basement dub) (4:53)
Review: With Valentine's Day just around the corner, Caserta and the rest of the Bridge Boots crew have decided to offer-up something decidedly glassy-eyed and loved-up - specifically two fresh bootleg re-makes of Teddy Pendergass's 1978 Philadelphia Soul classic "When Somebody Loves You Back". The seven-inch singles boasts two distinctively different versions. On the A-side you'll find the "Rooftop Mix", a striped-back blend of dub disco and boogie in which Pendergrass's fine vocals rise above a rubbery bassline, colourful '80s soul synths and toe-tapping beats. Over on the B-side Caserta flips the script, layering selected snippets of Pendergrass's vocal over a deep, dark and bass-heavy house groove. It's sub-titled the "Basement Dub" and that's exactly what it is.

  1. Dancing (With Me) (5:16)
Review: Originally a white label promo, Mark Knight and Co. are finally letting this one out of the bag. A seriously classy and infectious record from the new UK duo Cashio, "Dancing (With Me)" is a record that's had everyone talking, including some of the worlds top DJs like Annie Mac and Danny Howard to name but a few. A proper, disco-fied funky house anthem (with infectious vocals) that harks back to the glory days of the late '90s popularised by Def Mix, Subliminal and Soulfuric et al - is this a comeback? With the Toolroom crew heading to ADE at the end of the month, we're sure this one will bang the party there, until the later part of 2019 and beyond!

Review: Joseph Spencer and Nicholas Church return from the table with another superb Casino Times session. Riffing off last year's "Decoded" EP, "Recoded" follows suit with more cosmic introspection. "Voices" is a springy upbeat thumper with just a touch of Detroit to its soul and enough vitality to have you shuffling around the finest carpet joints on the strip. Elsewhere "Sambra Heat" cashes in the deepest chips with rich Balearic palpitations while the electroid "This Is My Channel" puts everything on red then breakdances off without glancing to see if its won. Finally "Display End Sequence" hits the jackpot with a funky, almost tribal fusion. Feeling lucky?

Review: This is a red hot new funk 12" for the super cool Jackie Brown label. It features Marcello linking up with Antonio Rapa on drums and Blake C.S. Franchetto on the bass and they are all on fire across these high speed cuts. "Welcome" is tight and driving as you like, with cosmic keys taking flight, "Shark" is more playful and lush with eve more astral vibes and then things take a turn into late night sounds on the golden "Malo Pivo". "Brooklyn" expires the sort of broken beat you'd find in London's underground and "Chilly" closes with rich jazz stylings. Overall, this is an excellent 12".

Review: Bobby Cazanova does a fine job of putting together an expressive and expansive trip on his new EP for young but already impressive label Hen & Goose. 'A Romance Of Many Dimensions' brings fantastic synth sounds and more than a sprinkling of cosmic dust to a crisp and transportational beat. For deeper thrills, check the introverted loops of 'Recognition By Sight'. 'Irregular Figures' is like being trapped in a half mirrors, with melody firing around you in all direction. Some of them eventually break free on 'Vision Of Lineland' which is a sick, punchy house track that has spaced aged vibes to spare.

Review: Over the last few years, we've heard plenty of reworks of obscure, Cold War-era cuts from Eastern Europe, though few from the then Soviet Union. The shadowy CCCP Edits series, which here makes its bow, promises to set the record straight. There's plenty to set the pulse racing, from the bubbly acid bass, bustling funk breaks and hip-house breaks of "Malodym" and "Ya Zdes" (the latter with added deep house drowsiness and Balearic intent), to the spoken male vocals, high-tempo electro beats and lo-fi guitars of "Knopochki". Best of all though is closing cut "Astrid", which isn't really Russian at all, but rather an extra-percussive, bass heavy samba-house rework of an old Astrud Gilberto track. We'll forgive them though as it's really rather good.
