Review: With recent missives for Royal Oak and Clone under his belt, Takuya Matsumoto makes his way to Vibes & Pepper with this sure shot grip of five gritty deep house joints crafted the classic way. The flanging hats on 'The City' tell you this is raw gear for the heads, but there's plenty of heart-warming goodness in the wandering basslines and lingering chords to ensure universal appeal. The floatier 'Sky' and Trax-ready '1989' keep up the vintage sound Matsumoto has perfected, but as the likes of deep and stripped-back 'Willow Green' demonstrate, he's also able to reach across a range of moods with his chosen studio approach and the results are golden every time.

Review: Clearly, downtempo was a thing in Japan before it was ever a thing in Brighton - or wherever the hell Bonobo was given credit for inventing it - and it shows in this new repress of some of Takuya Matsumoto's earliest works. Ha, you were fooled! This one's actually new, but it's simply made to appear like each crafty cut here was made between the years 1985-88. Infectious, FM-oody, and laden with pitched-down coke-crazed vocals, this one charts the earliest era of house and its sound, emulating it to a T, except without any 303. Gee!

Review: On-point Japanese producer Takuya Matsumoto returns to Clone's Jack For Daze label with a follow-up to his brilliantly executed 85-88 EP. He's not discovered a shoe-box of DATs under the bed, but rather is purposefully paying tribute to the early days of house and techno with specific explorations of particular eras and their attendant sounds. This time around we're taken to the early 90s, with some wonderful, varied results. There's lush, FM-embellished deep house on '01 90' and edgy, jackin' techno wormholes opening up on '02 91'. Meanwhile '03 92' retains a healthy bounce and some lush washes of synth, and '04 93' tips towards the kind of garage house you'd find on a Strictly Rhythm record 30 years ago. Crucially, it's all shot through with tonnes more personality than most 90s soundalike records, so full credit to Matsumoto for spelling his intentions out and delivering the goods.

Review: It is very nearly a full ten years ago that Takuya Matsumoto dropped his masterful EKR's Galactic Dance EO on Clone. Fittingly, it now gets reissued by the ever vital Dutch label. All four tracks explore medic house with deep grooves and a far-sighted sense of reverie. The A-side is taken up with a pair of tunes that are split into two parts and both just roll and roam with a delightful freedom. 'The Sun On The Refugees' has a more unsettled melodic phrasing that loops and loops until its joined with some extra keys that release the pressure then 'Satellite Orbit Funk' is downbeat and dusty house a la Theo Parrish. Superb.

Review: Giorgio Maulini comes through to H24 with this two-track lip-licker, 'OG Kush', which, as the title should suggest, evokes the feeling of smoking herb when ingested correctly - without haste or anxiety. Exemplifying the incipient talent of his local scene, the title track is a smooth and snappy dream-whirl, synthetic organs and wahhing pads sloshing around the mix, while a remix from fellow producer Pressure Point seems to smoothen out and intensify things in equal measure.

Review: We were rather surprised to discover that Scheme marks Jenifa Mayanja's first 12" single since 2017, and her first release of any sort since her fine 2019 album 'Tales From Another Day'. Predictably, the long-serving deep house producer has once again hit the spot. Particularly potent is opener 'Averyday' [sic], a gloriously positive affair in which echo-laden organ sounds, elongated chords and her own quietly soulful vocalisations sit comfortably on dusty machine drums and a killer analogue bassline. Elsewhere, 'Under The Influence' is a chunkier slab of deep house full of cut-up vibraphone sounds and fuzzy synths, while 'Many Faces' is a pleasingly sub-heavy chunk of drowsy but energetic deep house goodness.

Review: Giorgio Canepa is the longstanding Italian house pioneer behind the MBG alias, and someone who very much shaped the Italo sound of the nineties. This vital reissue of his Trance Wave Again EP shows why. Right from the first beat and trance-licked chord, it has you locked in to the punchy beats and organ bassline. It's old school but still thrilling stuff. 'Trance Shout' ups the energy levels slightly and then an unreleased 1993 mix layers in more Balearic chords that take you to some party on the Med under a hot sun.

Review: Detroit-based label Choose Better Friends is a new outlet that is already mighty impressive after just three releases. This one lands quickly after the second from Jaco Matthews and it offers more traditionally included Motor City house sounds. Ryan McCray opens with weighty but dusty drums and grainy sustained chords that lock you into a trance straight off the bat, especially once the low-slung bass and steamy vocals arrive. From there, the wooden knocks and muffled kicks of 'What It Is' are paired with some nice dreamy chords and the flipside offers more zoned-out basement lushness with 'The Tide' and the heavier, more raw 'Rushin.' Essential.

Review: Bob Mc Gilpin released 'Superstar' in 1978 and it soon became a smash hit around the world, even making its way into the charts and mainstream radio. The original is offered up here in all its loose limbed glory with the starry melodies and fizzing synths all making for take off. Then comes a Marco Fratty extended version that draws out the good bits and brings a stylised vocal to the front and centre. The full vocal mix goes one step further and is a truly uplifting gem while the Smooth Paradise mix pairs things back to a deeper, dubbier vibe with mid-tempo drums teasing and pleasing in equal measure. A great package that fuses the old with the new.

Review: Here comes a fresh 12" containing four remixes of the song 'Call A Wave' by Malcolm McLaren and The Bootzilla Orchestra. The original was released in 1989 as part of McLaren's album Waltz Darling, which was an early example of the 'collaborative studio album' popular at the time, and fused classical music with elements of then-contemporary dance music styles, such as his brand of downtempo-ish post-punk / industrial - a true McLaren mode. The newer remixes that feature here come from the likes of DFC and Mark Moore and William Orbit (responsible for the Orbital mix rather than the Hartnoll brothers) and are no less sludgey, Balearic and chuggy as the original loom-bird-laden track. Two new stripped-back versions also appear.

Review: Earlier in the year, Multi Culti dropped the first collaborative album from MD Pallavi and Andi Otto, a decidedly cosmic and otherworldly, but undeniably alluring and accessible affair entitled Song For Broken Ships. This expansive remix package sees a wealth of artists (including the pair themselves) give their spin on two tracks from the set. On side A we get three passes on 'Prayer To The Cloud': a bleeping, intoxicating and heady deep house interpretation by Simon De Kunovich, a dreamy downtempo version by Peter Power, and a 'Prayer-a-Pella' based on the track's Hindi vocals. Over on the B-side, the pair's sub-heavy and shuffling 'Clockshop' comes accompanied by two new tweaks. Auntie Flo's fine, Kwaito influenced rework is followed by a sparse, echoing and minimalistic revision courtesy of Kaleema.

Review: The Mechanical Man is something of a hero amongst deep house heads, so Toronto label Selections are rightly buzzed to have him on board. He opens up with a lively broken beat number lavished with a superb r&b vocal sample and sunny chords on 'Be Down.' He sinks into a more cuddly and smoky house groove on 'Let It Ride' and allows the pensive leads to take over as you head through the stars. 'The Night In The North Area' has a fresh bassline darting about underneath muted chords that bring a Detroit feel. Review: German label Club Unite will always be one of our favourite labels simply because of the catalogue naming convention they use (check it out above). Thankfully the music is up to scratch too. This is the 30th EP and it's a split between Mellow Man and DMA, who take a side each. Mellow Man kicks off with two versions of 'Everyday', a vibe-y and happy house cut with bouncing drums and smart sax stabs that comes as an uplifting party starter and a more blissed out and deep cut. 'Get U' on the flip from Ama is served up the same - first as a vocal lead crowd pleaser with classic house drums, then a sweet and smooth cut that seduces with each drum loop.

Review: Hailing from the brilliant, tangled web orbiting Future Sound Of London, Mental Cube was one of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans' short-lived side projects which found them indulging in the bleep and acid house sound. Given the talent at the controls, it's little wonder this release became such a holy grail - a misfit twist on the conventional formula of club records at the time and yet still as satisfying as any of the more widely played early 90s hits. This is the first time the release has been reissued in its true original form, meaning both mixes of 'So This Is Love' and the 'Santa Monica Mix' of 'Q'. Listen out for the cheeky nod to 808 State on 'So This Is Love' - a respectful tip of the hat rather than a cheeky lift, we'd say.

Review: 'State Of Mind' by Mephisto was originally released in 1992 as an Italian house precursor to trance. The single, receiving four mixes, was among the many wax releases to propel the producer (real name Maurizio D'Ambrosio) to longlasting acclaim, thanks to an affiliation with the label Palmares Records & Tapes. Review: Anyone with a passing interest in dance music will be familiar with Metro Area's one and only self-titled album. It is now 20 years old and has never been bettered in the two decades since it was released. The US pair also released a highly regarded selection of EPs back in the day on Environ, and the label has decided to reissue them. But not before having them recut and remastered by the one and only Matt Colton. These new editions feature some versions of the tunes that have never been reissued before as well as the original, extended 12" versions of all songs. There is no reason not to pick up all four 12"s, frankly.

To mark their 20th-anniversary Environ has lined with the renowned mastering engineer Matt Colton to have the duo's first four 12"s recut. Each one features the original, extended 12" versions of all songs, some of which have never been re-released. Review: It might be 23 years old, but Metro Area's second eponymous EP still sounds as fresh, timeless and immaculately produced as it did at the turn of the Millennium. Here the three-tracker returns in freshly remastered form. The real standout is arguably near nine-minute A-side 'The Art Of Hot', a deliciously deep, sparse and glassy-eyed affair in which echoing strings (courtesy of Kelley Polar and chums), sustained chords and electronic pots-and-pans percussion rise above an undulating synth bassline and crispy disco drums. Elsewhere, 'Machine Vibes' is a more warming and melody-rich skip through deep nu-disco pastures featuring a rather lovely flute solo, and 'Wafer' is a bass guitar-propelled skip through spacey, house-not-house awesomeness.

Review: Has there ever been a more significant nu-disco release than Metro Area's 1999 debut? It was certainly an outlier on its original release in 1999 and inspired countless others to attempt (and usually fail) to follow in their footsteps. All these years on, it still sounds fantastic - as this remastered reissue proves. Opener 'Atmospherique' effectively defined their timeless, NYC-inspired sound - think the warmth of deep house mixed with spacey synths, disco percussion and squelchy bass - while the subtly Latin-tinged 'Pina' sounds every bit as incredible in 2023 as it did at the turn of the Millennium. 'Rainy Street Feeling', which didn't make the cut on their celebrated debut album, is a real treat, too - a classy hybrid of loose-limbed deep house, sultry strings and nu-disco electronics that's worth the admission fee on its own.

Review: You will of course know if you are reading this that Nu Groove was a seminal New York house label that lay a blueprint for deep stuff back in the 80s and 90s. This fresh 12" serves up a third volume of label edits from various artists from across the spectrum. Metro's 'Turnstyle Turbulance' is tackled first by NiCe7 who brings bumpy drums, then Mark Broom's Vox Flanger Mixx of an N.Y. House'n Authority classic is a steamy jacker with lovely old-school vibes. Our favourite though is Asylum's 'Guitarz' (Honey Dijon & Luke Solomon edit) which is a nice mid-tempo workout with seductive claps and excellent hi hats.

Review: MF Robots' Dawn Joseph and Jan Kincaid dropped real heat back in 2021 with their Break The Wall album. 'Make The Call' was one of the standout tunes from it and now BBE has assembled a series of new remixes of it by Two Soul Fusion. That tackle all genres starting with a house remix full of soul and warm drums. The Boogie remix is an instrumental take that unfurls over nine minutes of ass-shaking and irresistible groovy goodness. Then comes the same tune with the lush vocal left in before an instrumental of the house remix to close the package.

Review: Ilija Rudman and Antonio Zuza's consistently classy label is back with a standout 12" from Californian producer Michoacan, who's previously been spotted on DFA, Eskimo and many other highly regarded labels. "Knights Are Cold" is a vibrant, original and delightfully kinked slab of sunshine with a subtle pitch-bent oddness and an innate funkiness. It's smart in its reference points, but certainly not trying to be a simple 80s disco pastiche.
