All I Do
All I Do (7")
Cat: AHS 019. Rel: 02 Jul 20
  1. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit vocal) (4:05)
  2. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit instrumental) (4:05)
Review: Japanese live outfit, A Hundred Birds has a thing for creating classic covers. Over the course of their career, they've recorded countless covers, including organic, string-laden interpretations of techno scene staples such as "Blackwater" (originally recorded by Octave 8) and "Knights of the Jaguar" (The Aztec Mystic). Last year they offered up another warm and wonderous cover, this time of Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do". Here it gets a new lease of life courtesy of scalpel fiend Ryu The Man, who has delivered tightened-up, floor-friendly vocal and instrumental edits of the warm, rich, soulful and undeniably summery cover version. Both are rather good, though it's the vocal version that will win over dancers.

For this 2 volume series Andres flexes his blunted downtempo beat-driven side, complete with his primo cut skills celebrating our favorite red, white, and pink libations. Both volumes feature 3 instrumental hip-hop beats, cut loud at 33.3 rpm, pressed with love at Archer on Detroit's east side, and housed in the MotorCity Wine company 7" jacket.

  1. Main Thing (3:32)
  2. FTF (Freak The Funk) (4:02)
Review: For the latest salvo in their occasional "45" series of seven-inch singles, Brooklyn imprint Razor-N-Tape has turned to Pittsburgh boogie badman and boom-bap hip-hop maker Buscrates (real name Orlando Marshall). A-side "Main Thing" is a revivalist synth-boogie gem that breathes new life into a well-known tribute to "Mary Jane", layering the pitched-down vocal over what sounds like a fresh bed of synth-bass, colourful lead lines and head-nodding drums. Just as good is up-tempo flipside "F.T.F (Freak The Funk)", a vocoder-laden slice of deep electrofunk goodness that hits all the right notes. If you love synth-powered 1980s sounds, you need this in your life.

  1. Stevie? (Caserta Sunday Saint mix) (6:04)
  2. Stevie? (JoDaCe Saturday Sinner mix) (5:57)
Review: Caserta is legendary digger Kon's long time engineer, and he sure does have a wealth of tricks up his own sleeve. Here he gets to tackle his own super 7" on the Bridge Boots label and first off he serve sup a lovely take on a Stevie Wonder tune. 'Stevie?' (Caserta Sunday Saint mix) has mid-tempo grooves rolling away nicely beneath exquisite synth work and a well-treated vocal from the man himself. JoDaCe steps up on the flip for a Saturday Sinner mix that is more driving and ready for the club. The bass is rugged, the vocals more looped and freaky, the effect just as brilliant but in different ways.

Cat: BB 45005. Rel: 12 Feb 20
  1. Teddy (Caserta's Rooftop mix) (4:50)
  2. Teddy (Caserta's Basement dub) (4:53)
Review: With Valentine's Day just around the corner, Caserta and the rest of the Bridge Boots crew have decided to offer-up something decidedly glassy-eyed and loved-up - specifically two fresh bootleg re-makes of Teddy Pendergass's 1978 Philadelphia Soul classic "When Somebody Loves You Back". The seven-inch singles boasts two distinctively different versions. On the A-side you'll find the "Rooftop Mix", a striped-back blend of dub disco and boogie in which Pendergrass's fine vocals rise above a rubbery bassline, colourful '80s soul synths and toe-tapping beats. Over on the B-side Caserta flips the script, layering selected snippets of Pendergrass's vocal over a deep, dark and bass-heavy house groove. It's sub-titled the "Basement Dub" and that's exactly what it is.

Cat: BB45 007. Rel: 06 Oct 20
  1. Luther 2 (Caserta & The Gang mix) (5:25)
  2. Luther 2 (Caserta & Natasha Diggs Incense dub) (5:32)
Review: Last year Caserta and friends had their wicked way with a classic Luther Vandross acapella, brilliant re-framing the soul maestro in a late 1980s NYC club style. A year on they're at it again on 'Luther 2', which naturally repurposes another superb performance from the legendary vocalist. On the A-side, Vandross's vocal rides a smooth revivalist disco groove created by an all-star cast including Serge Gamesbourg (bass) and Natasha Diggs (piano, Fender Rhodes). It's a genuinely impressive revision that sounds like it could have been recorded sometime in the early 1980s (despite being made during lockdown). Diggs plays an even bigger role on the flip, a hazy and groovy deep house version in which she adds her own sassy spoken word vocals in reaction to the Vandross acapella.

  2. Luther (Caserta's Henry Street mix) (5:10)
Review: Hot on the heels of a re-work of Bobby Caldwell, edit stylist Caserta is back with another golden nugget. This time he turns his attention to the one and only Luther Vandross and serves up two equally essential but very different tunes that pay homage to his unique voice. The King Street Mix is all hip swinging claps and nodding bass riffs that are organic and heartfelt, whereas the Henry Street Mix nods to the '90s heyday of New York. With warm neon organ stabs that will get any floor pumping, both interpretations have Luther's soulful voice front and centre.

Marvin (7")
Cat: BB 45006. Rel: 06 May 20
  1. Marvin (Casey Mistake mix) (5:02)
  2. Marvin (dub That Got Away) (5:05)
Review: Having previously worked his magic on classic cuts from Diana Ross, Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass - among others - Bridge Boots boss Caserta has now moved on to Marvin Gaye. He's grabbed the acapella from a classic song - in this case one of Gaye's duets with Diana Ross, "My Mistake (Was To Love You)"- and incorporated it into a brand new track. The A-side "Casey Mistake Mix" sits somewhere between early '80s boogie and the mid-80s proto-house sound created by Boyd Jarvis, Timmy Regisford and Paul Simpson. Interestingly, Gaye and Ross's vocals fit it like a glove. The flipside "Dub That Got Away" is an altogether more bumpin' garage-house workout rich in cut-up vocals snippets and wobbly analogue bass.

  1. The Obeah Man (part 1) (5:19)
  2. The Obeah Man (part 2) (2:56)
  3. The Obeah Man Rhythm (3:23)
Review: On this surprise 7" edition of Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's unofficial Edits & Overdubs series of releases, the long-serving New York producer turns his attention to Exuma's 'The Obeah Man', a heavily percussive, Afro-fired slab of rhythm and blues/folk-rock fusion that was once an anthem at David Mancuso's Loft parties. Claussell's 'Part One' rework somehow seems even more urgent, percussive and life-affirming than Exuma's original version, and the 'Part 2' version - an unashamedly sweaty, drum-heavy interpretation - most certainly is. Possibly best of all - for plays in house sets, at least - is the 'Obeah Man Rhythm' version, which is a loopy, percussive beast. You may need to go for a little lie down after playing it - we did!

Review: Joaquin "Joe" Clausell launched the "Xperiments" series back in 2016 with a box set containing two single-sided flexi-discs and a seven-inch single, all of which contained some pretty spaced-out sounds. Four years on he's decided to offer-up a new instalment in the avant-garde project: a single-sided seven-inch presented in a special hand-made sleeve by artist Akemi Shimada. Interestingly, the featured track, "Discombobulated Wing", is far more club-ready than its predecessors, with Clausell layering krautrock-esque treated guitars and Tangerine Dream style analogue synthesizer parts atop a low-slung, restless bass guitar line and sparse house drums.

Review: Japan's DJ Kawasaki links up with Monday Michuru for a new house come disco tune that is full of big vocal delights. The funky riffs are knotted and infectious, the rickety rhythm section nice and loose and the synth motifs all filled with charm and colour, It's a perfectly feel good tune that will make you dance any woes away. On the flip, New York legend and Kind of the Edits, Danny Krivit steps up with an extended edit that is jam packed with noodling piano solos and a more bristling, Latin tinged percussive element.

Review: Kornel Kovacs and HNNY's Puss imprint has another brilliantly unhinged offering here with DJ Space Heater making what appears to be his debut release. The a-side is a speed garage flip with forceful drums and speech excerpts spliced in next to sentinel vocal breaks. It's silly, but seriously fun. 'Go With The Flow' (HMT VIP) takes care of the B-side and is a funky beat with a pained male vocal and warped synth spin back sounds. It's another mad use of a vocal sample that in the wrong hands would be terrible, but is here oh so right.

  2. Loni Clark - "Rushing" (Mood II Swing dub - Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:31)
Review: Danny Krivit is currently known as one of the music community's greatest purveyors of top quality disco & house as he continues to perform regularly before sold-out audiences around the world. With his unique ear for what works on the dancefloor he has also become known as "King of the Re-edit." Danny has a deep connection to Kim English's "It Makes A Difference" release on Nervous Records from 2006. Krivit worked with writer Kyle Smith on the remixes that originally made this tune an anthem at his 718 Sessions parties as well as one of the highlights of club nights from Tokyo to New York to London that appreciate quality soulful house. The B-side is Danny's re-edit of one of the most famed dubs from the Nervous catalogue as well as for the producers Mood II Swing. Upon its release in 1993 this dub emerged as one of the defining sounds of summer 1993 at Ministry Of Sound which had just recently opened the year before. The "rushing rushing rushing" hook is well knownby golden era of house afficianados around the world and he does an amazing job bringing this essential hook.

  2. Purple (4:04)
Review: Patrick Gibin has signed some terrific records to his Mother Tongue label, so it's no surprise to discover that the Italian imprint's first "45" is a bona fide stunner. It sees sometime Gustosa producer Gary Superfly join forces with Other Lands (AKA Gavin Sunderland, previously best known for his work as Fudge Fingaz) to offer up the kind of sumptuously warm, languid, loose, toasty and organic fare that can't quite decide whether it wants to be jazz-funk, modern boogie or especially hazy deep house. A-side "Endless" is particularly potent, with waves of kaleidoscopic synth sounds and twinkling Rhodes solos relaxing over a chunky bassline and head-nodding drums, though toastier and hazier flipside "Purple" is almost as good.

Review: Leo Gunn is an artist that has been truly dedicated to the cause of Deep Explorer. To date all the artist's music has come to light on Dubbyman's bastion of Spanish deep house, and it's no wonder when you listen to the illustrious tones of his productions. Ahead of a new album, this 7" of mystery and wonder starts off in the utterly enchanting world of "Voodoo", a spaced out lullaby of expressive pads and the softest house tick buffeting along the aqueous sounds. There's a slight change of mood on the flip as "Moondub" lives up to its name with a spacious soundworld marked out by echoing piano notes and a rock solid bassline, but still that inimitable Deep Explorer mood prevails.

Review: Stockholm label Omena raise a glass to celebrate one year of business with this special RSD 7" from the ubiquitous HNNY. Johan Cederberg was responsible for the label's debut release so it seems quite fitting he's back with more sweet HNNY business to usher in the second year of Omena. Up top, "Cheer Up My Brother" finds HNNY in laid back form, adding some subtle downbeat funk touches to the lazy afternoon groove of "Farther Along", transforming the gospel staple into an essential summer sizzler. It's complemented well by the B-side track "There Is No One Else" which ups both the tempo and temperature into something of a French Touch stunner.

Review: Record Packer is a new video game scored by the one and only Detroit don Omar S. He's mostly reworked a load of tunes of his you will know and love in a crunchy, lo-fi, nostalgic 8bit style and is to real them all as part of his new Detroit based virtual and physical exhibition Conant Gardens Party Store. Review: We're so used to Omar-S pursuing a very particular form of Detroit deep house, that when the legendary producer tries something different, it takes us by surprise. Sidetrakx Volume #3 is full of surprises. Take "Uluu", for example; while still a deep house track, its' undulating dub bassline, spaced-out soul vocal and sparse beats are pleasingly different to his traditionally rolling fare. It's mighty impressive, all told, while flipside "Another One 2 Love" almost eschews deep house completely. Instead, Alex Smith delivers a sweet, almost cute soul song built around head-nodding post hip-hop beats and sweet melodies. It, too, is hugely enjoyable, and once again proves his mastery of multiple genres.

Review: Alex "Omar" Smith traditionally uses the "Sidetrakx" series to release music that doesn't fit with his club-rocking house and techno 12" series. Even so, few would have expected him to use the latest edition - the sixth in total - to offer up a dancehall cut featuring Jamaican singer and MC Nardo Ranks. "Love Me Like Cooked Food" features Ranks chatting and singing in Patois above a dancehall "riddim" rich in rubbery bass guitar, echo-laden machine drums and flanged guitar riffs. It may be a curveball, but it's rather good. Over on the flip, "Renault used car salesman" John FM guests on a lo-fi R&B/soul workout that also includes some deliciously tongue-in-cheek, poodle perm-sporting soft rock guitar solos.

  2. Please Don't Make It Funky (The Patchouli Brothers Re edit) (5:05)
Review: "Please Don't Make It Funky" is one of those delicious curiosities that dusty-fingered crate diggers unearth every now and then. Recorded and released in limited qualities in 1980, it was apparently an attempt by Frank Pisani, then a veteran American singer who had last tasted success in the rock and roll era, to capture the disco/jazz-funk zeitgeist. While it was a commercial flop, the track is undeniably attractive and fun, with squelchy synth sounds, ear-catching horns, fluid piano solos and Pisani's blue-eyed-soul vocals rising above a tidy groove. This surprise - but most welcome - reissue backs Pisani's cheery original with a fresh re-edit by the Patchouli Brothers. This includes some filter trickery and a DJ-friendly arrangement, but otherwise sticks close to the original mix.

Review: It's rare to see Detroit stalwart Marcellus Pittman releasing a seven-inch single, but then he has stated that his latest excursion is "genre free". While that's not strictly true, it's certainly a pleasing diversion from his usual beatdown influenced deep house fare. A-side "Fruits And Vegetable Groove" is a chunk of hip-hop style MPC beat science, with Pittman expertly cutting-up drowsy samples, skewed beats and tipsy, mind-altering chords to create a suitably blunted, left-of-centre soundscape. "Love 4 My Kinfolk" is similarly laidback and groovy, with gentle instrumentation and fuzzy jazz-funk samples rising above a dusty, head-nodding groove.

Review: With an approach to deep house that isn't afraid to indulge in orchestral, ambient waters, it seems somewhat appropriate that "Can't Believe", the A-side of Steffen Laschinski's new 7" as Rising Sun - the debut on the Made With Love label - should be subtitled "Marianas Trench edit"; such are the levels of deepness this track manages to descend to, it feels at times like sinking into the Pacific Ocean. Review: We won't get into the complex history of Candi Staton's "Hallelujah Anyway", but suffice to say that it has been remixed and re-modeled in a myriad of ways over the years. This Glitterbox edition boasts two previously unheard rubs, including a flipside Frankie Knuckles presents Directors Cut "Soul Praise" version that for some reason missed the cut (sorry) back in 2012. While that's good - Knuckles reworks were always luscious, warm and celebratory, and this is no different. Moplen's "Classic Vibe" mix is slower and groovier with a wonderful '90s New Jersey feel (albeit with a touch of gospel-disco flavour), and sounds like a summer anthem in the making.

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

So What U Want
So What U Want (7" limited to 300)
Cat: BBR 016. Rel: 24 Sep 20
  1. So What U Want (Ian Ash mix) (4:05)
  2. So What U Want (Lord Funk remix) (4:21)
Review: Ian Ash - a resident DJ of the World-famous Montreux Jazz Festival - is also known as "H" and Sunny G and he is a new singing to the Boogie Butt Records label. For his first outing he delivers a massive boogie house track with filtered vibes, lush synths and live sounding drums. His mix of 'So What U Want' really is a thing of joy, with camp vocals from R&B singer Djemaili that work their way into your affections and noodling riffs that will have you miming along. The flip side is a Lord Funk remix that brings dance floor busting electro funk vibes and is sure to work in any setting from the beach to the pool to the club.

Video Crash
BBE
Cat: BBE 438SLP2. Rel: 02 Jul 18
  1. Acid Crash (5:08)
  2. Hardcore Hip House (Joe Smooth Too Deep mix) (5:12)
Review: DJ Spinna & Kai Alce's Foundations project hits its second release on BBE with two stone cold foundation setters from one of Chicago's true dons: Tyree Cooper. First up is 88's almighty acid banger "Video Crash" (or "Acid Crash" as it's also been known for 30 years) that still hits harder than almost every techno record made ever since. Flip for a trip 1989 as Joe Smooth sends "Hardcore Hip House" to the promised land with his instantly distinctive piano touches and strong sense of soul. Serious history business.

Percussion Maddness: Part Two
Percussion Maddness: Part Two (double 7") (1 per customer)
Cat: VR 197. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Acid (3:47)
  2. EOL Intro (Clap Your Hands) (3:39)
  3. Son Montuno (3:40)
  4. Four Beat Mambo (3:22)
Review: Earlier this month Louie Vega reissued his 2006 full-length collaboration with Luisito Quintero, a veteran percussionist who has long been part of New York's vibrant Latin fusion scene. Here he delivers 'Part Two' of the same project, a shorter but no less essential collection of percussion-rich Latin dance music gems. Opener 'Acid' is a high-quality traditional salsa gem, while 'Four Beat Mambo' does exactly what it says on the tin, with a killer double bassline rising and falling beneath Quintero's killer percussion. 'Son Montuno' adds a little deep jazz-funk flavour to the percussionist's infectious rhythms, while 'EOL Intro (Clap Your Hands)' is an up-tempo fusion of deep house and salsa that has long been a staple in the sets of Vega's Elements of Life band.

Before Midnight (Dubbyman mix) (40 gram vinyl 7")
Cat: DEEPEX 044. Rel: 04 Feb 19
  1. Before Midnight (5:18)
  2. Before Midnight (Dubbyman House mix) (4:58)
Review: George Btp has many strings to his bow, from his work as Dan Piu to his Allstar Motomusic aliases and his deepArtSounds label. His Zarenzeit band with Robert P has been quietly cruising since the mid 90s, although first surfaced on deepArtSounds in 2016 with the Black Inside album. Now the project returns with a limited 7" release for fellow deep house traveler Dubbyman's Deep Explorer label, and the results are as seductive and subliminal as you would expect. "Before Midnight" fuses swirling galaxies of high end synth work with a snappy electro funk backbeat, which Dubbyman reworks on the flip into one of his trademark deeper than deep dancefloor cuts.
