Tempa Allstars Vol 8
Cat: TEMPA 104. Rel: 30 Dec 15
Acre - "Messages" (5:59)
Epoch - "The Vile" (4:42)
Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

LX One & Youngsta - "Bloodshot" (4:11)
LX One - "Seeking" (4:11)
Review: LX One fires up his Vantage machine for another joy ride around the town. As we've come to expect from the MC-turned-premiership producer, it's all about the drama and tension. 'Bloodshot' sees him teaming up with OG Youngsta for a haunted house of a jam. Dusty organs, rusty textures. Meanwhile on the B 'Seeking' goes for the jugular with its fierce symphonic stabs and end-of-the-world swagger. Heavyweight.

Catch Me (feat Breezy Lee) (5:08)
Chasm (feat Zameen-A) (5:07)
Hidden (feat Lelijveld) (3:45)
528 (3:26)
Review: Two certified dubstep donnies collide for 'Ascension', a unique album that explores 140 music from the system roots to the very outer edges. Made remotely during the recent frustrating years, the pair developed a strong creative code and built a body of work that taps into Nomine's 'Blind Man' signature but trembles with that minimal Mondays vibe Youngsta famously pushed. This 12" is a great snapshot of the LP with some of the beguiling features; Breezy Lee brings a Portishead like earnestness on 'Catch Me', there's the disarming violin work and stark bass tones on 'Chasm' and Lelijveld's spelling-binding whispers on 'Hidden' will stop you in your tracks. '528' takes us far east for a final blast of special inspiration. A unique set.

Systematic Error EP
Cat: CRUCIAL 027. Rel: 11 Feb 20
Systematic Error (4:42)
Hello (4:12)
Iridescence (4:13)
Review: Sleeper and Youngsta together on three concrete jams; you already know how heavy these are going to be. "Systematic Error" takes the lead with a sinister acid narrative that bubbles ominously before the bleeps rise to an ultimate euphoric stand off. "Hello" takes things to a much deeper, stripped back playground giving the ricocheting radar and big belly bass fills stacks of room to frolic. Finally "Iridescence" brings in the synths and brass for an emotional finale. Crucial and powerful pieces of work from two scene dons once again living up to their name.

Seek & Move
Cat: ALBION 014. Rel: 17 Mar 21
Seek & Move (4:43)
Jankar (4:54)
Make You Believe (5:48)
Review: Yoofee makes a big impression with his debut on Albion Collective. He is known as a rule break and rhythmic innovator and that plays out form the off. 'Seek & Move' is a dark, focussed, devastating cut with wooden hits and prickly fills over jerking beat frameworks. A female vocal is the only source of humanity in an otherwise alien world. 'Jankar' builds the pressure with insistent drum work and stark claps next to alarming synth screams that make for spring loaded progressions. The Berlin-based jazz musician closes down with 'Make You Believe', a more musical vibe with organic pianos brining plaintive moods over a shimmering and shuffling rhyme.

Cat: WPR 055. Rel: 27 Oct 21
Wings (4:41)
Wahhh (4:42)
Fermata (4:40)
Czeck Mystik (4:44)
Review: After a debut EP in 2018 under this alias, Berlin's Yoofee went quiet until earlier this year. Then he served up three new EPs in quick succession, with this being the most recent on White Peach. It's a perfectly sweet and ripe four tracker that takes dubstep into deep and atmospheric new territory. 'Wings' kicks off with plunging bass and scattered toms with a lush flute line leading the charge. 'Wahhh' is then icy cold and sparse, with vocal yelps and a low end oscillation charging up the crowd. 'Fermata' is a shuffler, with a soft edged lead synth and glorious muted melodies and shimmering snares sounding like rain dancing on a roof. 'Czeck Mystik' closes down with a deadly sense of dread and paranoia.

Progress (4:13)
Progress (instrumental) (4:15)
Review: Yes! It's high time Youngsta featured on his own label and it's happening right here with "Progress". Laying down a creepy graveyard groove laced with all precision balance of funk, space and swampiness, it's the perfect beat for Killa P and Long Range to do their thing. Extolling the virtues of hard hustling, investment and caring for those closest, both P and the Long man go in as hard as the track itself with some wholesome food for thought on life directions. "Progress" yourself today...

War Cry
Review: Having showcased their exemplary collaboration abilities way back in 2010 with "Masai Mara", Youngsta and Seven collide once again for two more hard-hitting doom steppers. "Architects" is out-and-out tribal science, all concrete percussion and ominous drones designed with precise attention to detail you'd expect from its professional namesake. "War Cry" is a minimal masterpiece where the bass preaches a sermon of pure gloom while a shimmering arpeggio suggests light at the end of the tunnel. Step towards it today.
