Another Channel - "East Slope Dub" (4:35)

Masis - "Mount Zion" (4:12)
Stefan Dubs - "Saudrune Dub" (5:28)
Stacktrace - "Heal" (5:49)
Review: Egregore Collective's second outing is another serious one that brings together five specialists from the world of deep dub music. Another Channel opens and plunges into a cavernous oceanic abyss with 'East Slope Dub' before Mantsche's 'Unknown Dub Story' (feat Bishop) has rippling chords that disappear to an infinite horizon while the paddy drums churn slowly below. There's an authentic dub feel to the endlessly wide open spaces of Masis's 'Mount Zio' and the flip brings more dark but delightful dub from Stefan Dubs and Stacktrace.

Ruling Sound (4:55)

Ruling Sound (TMSV remix) (5:00)
Review: Lafayette, Louisiana, may not be particularly associated with the bowel-bothering sub-bass and ricocheting drum hits of dubstep. Nevertheless, it's home to Bukkha, a producer whose floor-friendly dubstep releases are shot through with high-grade dub reggae influences. "Ruling Sound", featuring the slick and soulful vocals of Junior Dread, is a perfect example. It's effectively a dubstep/steppers reggae fusion, and a very good one at that. The producer's love of original dub can be heard loud and clear on the accompanying "Ruling Dub", which beefs up the sub-bass whilst ramping up the reverb, delay and tape echo. The flipside TMSV Remix, which boasts crunchier, jungle-influenced breakbeats and even weightier sub-bass, is also pretty nifty.

Dubhelmet (5:35)
Dawn Chorus (5:05)
System One (4:43)
Review: Infernal Sounds started as a widely followed YouTube channel specializing in promoting other people's music and mixes, but over the last two years they've started churning out solid, deep-minded dubstep of their own. And dubstep it is, because we don't like labelling any UK dance tune that deviates from house simply as 'bass'. Newcomers Causa and Shu drop a heavy, murky bombshell in "Dubhelmet", followed by the comparatively sunnier bass pounds and two-steps of "Dawn Chorus", and the DMZ vibes of "System One", a traditional sort of banger that you don't often here anymore. Tip!

Review: Infernal Sounds return with family member Chad Dubz (Foundation Audio) alongside debutant Somah - the latter previously of Deep Medi Musik, Scrub A Dub and Chord Marauders fame. The Business EP features the wonky wall of sound of the title track and its proper progressions in grime, followed by the sinister street level futurism of 'Naraka' going down a dark dubstep route. On the flip, the dread infused mediative dub on "Amplified" is an EP highlight, followed by the equally minimal and contemplative halftime journey "Unresolved".

Wervel (Zygos remix) (4:42)
Review: There has now been sufficient distance since the original dubstep movement that the sound seems to be coming back in fashion. And with plenty of top artists out there making music like this there is no reason why we shouldn't all be here for it. Crowley and Schi join forces for this one and open the account with 'Moraal.' It's a stripped back tune with skanking low ends, spares hits and plenty of urban atmosphere. 'Skitta' then drops even more echoing hits over a flashy and flabby bottom end designed to sink you in deep. On the flip, 'Wervel' comes first as a haunting and edgy stepper then and snaking low-end wobbler in the hands of Zygos.

Escapism Refuge - "Traps" (4:00)

Synpal & Ras Stimulant - "Ital Being" (5:52)
Review: The Deep heads crew have put together some superb sounds for the third volume of their Deep Heads Dubstep Volume 3 and now they are issuing plenty of the cuts on a series of tasty samplers. Danny Scrilla kicks this off with some classic urban soundscapes and reflective synths and Escapism Refuge's 'Traps' then gets a nice bump on. Sukh Knight's 'Havoc' introduces some nice frosty low end wobble and Synpal & Ras Stimulant close down with the midnight shuffle of 'Ital Being.' This is cutting edge stuff that shows there is plenty of life in the dubstep sound yet

Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol I

Derivate - "All My Homies Clappin'"
Beto Narme - "Let's Get In On"
Gantz - "Soul Is A Lie"
Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: Well Rounded Dubs chomp into 2019 with their first (300 limited) 12" of the year. And once again it's a showcase of next level talent as Foamplate and Sibla step up to the series. Foamplate (who was on the label launch release) returns with a vibrant, fuzzy piece of funk laden with trippy metallic harmonics and some serious off-grid funk in the drums. Sibla takes the flip with a stuttering slice of strange textures, harp plucks, crashing drums and so much sub you'll want to shave some off the record and bake with it. Well good mate.

Review: The second chapter of Sentry's compilation series furthers the notoriety of its lauded artist congregation, welcoming plenty of fresh faces to the revered artist roster. A four-track vinyl sampler, Syndicate Part 2 takes (as the label best said themselves) 'bass music enthusiasts for an extensive and stylistically varied ride'. KALI & Senncoria take dubstep into world music realms on 'Dragon Shape', LSN bring UK bass music forward on the urban grit of 'Shotta Kush', Substance teams up with label head honcho Youngsta on the blunted late night grime experiment 'Nug', and on what was probably our favourite track on here, Cimm presents a unique take on dub techno with the cavernous and glacial 'Glider'.

Review: Chad Dubz's Foundation Audio label outta Bristol remains a leading light in the bass, sound system and dubstep scene. This time out it is Kroomen and Somah who pair up for some mysterious late-night transmissions designed to rattle the walls. 'Kaba Rhythm' manages to be both light and airy yet dark and heavy all at once, with some Eastern melodies leading you ever deeper into the shadows. 'Sub 37' is all lurching kicks and skittish perc with twisted metallic textures and 'Heavy Smoke' is a slow and purposeful rhythm that takes its time to lure you in. It's golden-era dubstep that is as atmospheric as it is inviting.

Teffa & Sound Unknown - "Hide & Seek" (4:42)
Review: Dubstep doesn't get much deeper than the tunes on this meaty new Various Artists collection from 786. The title suggests it is the start of a new ongoing series, which is music to the ears of bass fiends everywhere. Mr K & DPRTNDRP kick off with 'Suppression,' with its menacing energy and churning hits, while Quasar & Nova team up for the excellent low end wobble and playful sense of funk that is deeply embedded in the rhythm of 'Witchcraft.' Saule & Centauri's 'Tyrant' is a pressurised cut with a freaky vocal and edgy synth stabs over woden hits. Sparse but atmospheric, it's just one of four killers here. The last is the drilling bass weight of Teffa & Sound Unknown's mystic 'Hide & Seek.' Great stuff.

Review: N-Type's latest collaboration project finds the dubstep don work with Wheel & Deal family member Sleeper. This is the latest of several such collections of tunes coming in the next week months. And that's great news because it is another killer four tracker. 'Dozer' is a real slayer with its fizzing synths and dark, cavernous bottom ends dragging you through a bleak urban landscape, then 'Arcane' follows a similar path but with a monstrous lead. 'Drift' is a bright melodic gem that has a more airy and reflective vibe and 'Carbon' closes with a seriously wobbly bottom end.

Review: Putting the DUB into Dublin, Irish engineer Sabab returns to J:Kenzo's Artikal with more sub bass guidance. Once again taking the classic traditional dub approach, 'Out Of Step' is a cavernous roomy number with plenty of space for those big reverbs and echoes. Remix-wise Quasar steps up to step out with an added layer of twisted bassline pressure. Creepy, slimy, tense. Just how we like it. Step out or step aside.

Port
Intruder
Review: Brussels label Vlek emerge with Sattelite, another deadly transmission from the mysterious Sagat, which details a new approach from last year's Klock approved debut EP Few Mysterious Solved In A Year Of Contact. Opening track lays down two minutes of hazed synths and pinballed metallic textures gradually succumbing to the threat of oncoming claustrophobic hissing and skittering hi-hat, whilst the title track is a master class in weaving forward momentum from choral samples as Sagat wisely tones down the percussive elements to a tinny 2 step beat. Ease the plate over and Sagat goes heads down for the tunnelling concrete rhythmics of "Port" which has a touch of the Fachwerks about it. It's followed and the EP is finished by the abstract sound design of "Intruder" which should interest fans of Astro Dynamics or Werk.

Captured
Review: We're not sure what's inspired the title here. It's either the ancient Greek word for 'togetherness' or the classic computer game that's basically a super early version of Guitar Hero. Either way, it's cool. And so is the music. Ambient yet heavy and more beat-driven than his album work with ASC earlier this year, "Synthesia" is a rolling dreamscape with shimmering arpeggios and cascading drumwork. "All Roads Lead Somewhere" is dub-soaked and solemn and swimming in synths. "Captured" bids us adieu with a penetrating bass kick and lush, lace-like pads.

As you'd expect from all concerned, all three tracks are uncompromised in their forward-glaring stance. They mark another step up for the esteemed bass talents of Samba after releases on the likes of System and Encrypted. "Winona" has a floaty light flute and devastating drums that makes for a nice juxtaposition. Taking off where 'Dun Dem' left us in 2018, there's a real industrial weight to 'Akkord' as a bulging bassline, steel foundry clangs and a rainbow of risers lead us into the big skank payoff. NY Is Killing Me
Review: The recent announcement from XL that Jamie Smith from The xx has indeed completed a remix album to complement I'm New Here, Gil Scott Heron's critically acclaimed return to form was met with a unanimous "mate, we know!" Despite the label's best efforts at stonewalling the news, Jamie's been including tracks in mixtapes for the best part of six months. "NY Is Killing Me" marks a delightful taste of what to expect when We're New Here arrives next February. Jamie xx flips the original's dusted off kilter diwali twist for something that sounds oh so now, stretching Gil's bluesy incantations over a backdrop of nagging melodic stabs and bouncing sub bass. The half step shudder that leads the way is augmented by haunting diva shrieks towards the glorious climactic introduction a plinking procession of marimbas. Truly special and bodes well for the full album as well as The xx beatsmith's EP for NMBRS.

His last release on these pages was a full six years ago on his own always mighty fine Don't Be Afraid imprint with only one or two other EPs credited to him in the whole of the last decade. Review: Make You sees Praveen Sharma and Travis 'Machinedrum' Stewart return to their Sepalcure project roughly a year after their last release together. Arriving through Hotflush Recordings, this five track collection immediately aligns itself to the adroit drum programming heartbreaking melodies, chopped guitar cuts and infectious tremelo vocals of previous Sepalcure output. Indeed the title track sees Sharma and Stewart lean on the oft-used money note skills of Whitney Houston, though the results are steadfastly more musically interesting than the numerous shallow house tracks that have emerged of late with a similar ploy at the core. "He Said No" gets the balance between hopeful and mournful just right, whilst the tunnelling drums of "The Water's Fine" shift in an out of focus in a manner that should sound immense on a proper system.

Review: With one single from pioneering producer Shackleton having already emerged on his Woe To The Septic Heart! Label this year in the shape of the synthesis-based Freezing Opening Thawing, he makes a swift return with the first installment of the Deliverance Series. Fans of his last work will be right at home with the minimal, almost Villalobos-esque sounds of "Beat His Command", whose wiry arpeggio seems capable of tunnelling its way directly into your brain. "Vor Und Zuruck" continues the synthetic choir motif of its associate, melding Shackleton's trademark percussive bounce with an almost weightless structure and progressively psychedelic structure that sounds like a digitised acid trip. This is still recognisably Shackleton, but it sounds like he's rebuilt his sound from the ground up.

Nikolai Reptile (3:38)
Ochen (4:55)
What About Me (4:57)
Mortal Talking (4:31)
Review: It's hard to think of a DJ with the global profile of Nina Kraviz who runs a label as underground and innovative as trip. The latest comes from Shadowax, who has previously contributed to the label's compilations but now makes her full label debut. Unlike much of the frantic and frenetic material trip has dealt with in the past, this EP slows the tempos and explores more moody and hypnotic techno. Opener "Nikolai Reptile" is a super slow motion and dub rhythm with searching synth lines gently riding up and down the scale, while "Ochen" recalls the icy minimal perfection of Daniel Bell. "What About Me" has spoken word mutterings and paranoid, pressurised kicks that hurry you along and lastly "Mortal Talking" is a flurry of hyper-speed drums and synth loops to fully flip you out.

Entrapment
Review: Now this is what we call good housekeeping... Adrian felt he had a few too many leftover ideas after his impeccable fourth album Survival & Resistance this summer, so he's consolidated them on this EP. But don't go expecting to hear off-cuts like some lame DVD extra, each of the four pieces are bashy, hypnotising hits of dancefloor dynamite delivered with Sherwood's mystic depths and imagination. From the blissful depths of the Horace Andy and violin flavoured "Semistoned" to the rusty jungle vibes of "Entrapment", this is the best way of recycling ideas we've heard in a long time.

Bring Me Weed
Bring Me Weed (Weed Psychosis mix)
Review: Carrying on a partnership that started when dubstep veteran Pinch reworked pieces of dub legend Adrian Sherwood's Survival & Resistance into an EP last year, Bring Me Weed sees the duo team up once more on a more equal footing. The title track is almost exactly as you'd expect, pairing Sherwood's delicate touch with subtly dark touches of wobble and low end from Pinch. On the flip is the considerably more beat driven "Weed Psychosis Mix", pairing churning bass textures with paranoid vocals and deeply trippy sound effects. This collaboration is as good as you'd expect and comes highly recommended...

Music Killer

Music Killer (extended mix)
Music Killer (Dubplate Pressure)
Review: Music Killer is an appropriately titled second release from the almighty pairing of Pinch and Adrian Sherwood who are clearly enjoying bringing their respective and respected production talents to the table in a studio situation. Whilst the Bring Me Weed 12" released earlier this year was very good it felt a bit like Sherwood and Ellis were only just feeling out where the partnership could go, the two tracks here sound like the results of some extensive studio time for the pair. Having road tested the record on the Juno office stereo it has be said headphones or laptop speakers just don't do justice to the deeply trippy bass weight of "Music Killer" in either it's extended or dubplate pressure version. The former crunches through a 130+bpm riddim and is blessed with all manner of toasting whilst Sherwood is granted the space on the latter to lay down some typically mind-bending reverb and delay effects.

Without
Review: Yet another collection of stunningly cosmic beat work from LA's Shlohmo, "Laid Out" runs the emotional gamut from angular, frenetic screams to soul-massaging vibes and back again. Opening with the yearning, sleepy croons of How To Dress Well on "Don't Say No", we're then wooed by the pitched up garagey twists of "Out Of Hand", spun-out and dazzled by the processed wails on "Later", cuddled softly by the twinkling textures of "Put It" and finally sent to bed with a cup of sweet sonic cocoa on "Without". Deep, dreamy and delectable, the Wedidit boss is on fine form here.

Impervious (4:42)
Reevea (5:06)
Egyptian March (4:38)
Review: Up there with Swindle and Joker, dubstep's funkiest OG Silkie returns to Deep Medi with three more sublime grooves. Broken, cheery, just a little cheeky and swooning with switches, each of these cuts rattles and bashes with Silkie's signature west- coast-meets-UKG-in-a-long-dark-Croydon-tunnel melting pot: "Impervious" flips from orchestral epic to dreamy flutters before dropping into 80s horn funk with mischief while "Reevea" is Silkie in classic "Poltergeist" mode. Finally "Egyptian March" is straight out of Indiana Jones. A jittering snake charmer that has you going from nought to rolling under stone doors and grabbing your hat in 10 seconds. Silkie you absolute don.

Slowjam
Wonder
Review: Silke's "Slowjam" has had internet forums awash with excitement for a few months now, so a round of applause to Deep Medi for pressing it up on some rather chunky heavyweight vinyl. For those who haven't heard it yet, treat yourself, pop on some headphones and allow the lazy sax, piano stabs and languid beats work their magic. Flip over for the soaring synth led jam "Wonder", a hyperactive wobbler that rounds off the EP in fine fashion. Dope release.

It's Late
Float
Murky
Techfunk
Review: Perhaps inspired by Swamp 81 recent luxurious twelve inch shaped deviations Deep Medi Musik deliver a double vinyl helping of Silkie City Limits. Proceedings get off to a snapping start with "It's Late" slipping a catchy vocal hook in the spaces between a raft of cleverly programmed drums and industrial bass whooshes for a Detroit meets UK Garage sensation. Elsewhere "Float" slips between brilliantly drunken alien melodies and schizophrenic bass wobbles before brilliantly transforming into a next century psychedelic steppah - watch out for that sax! "Murky" realigns the dub sound to piston heavy Jam City style industrial flex which accrues a spectral hue as it bumps along. Serving further notice of his versatility, "Tech Funk" sees Silkie occupy the sonic space between g funk, jungle and dubstep with impressive results. On this form we cannot wait for the mooted City Limits Vol 2 album to arrive!

Review: OG slimer Silkie takes us out on the town and drinks us under the table. "Drunken Master" chugs a lug with its oddball bass ruffles and creepy arpeggio layers building and building, "Why Not" is the quintessential brandy chaser, easing you in smoothly with his signature funk before warming your chest with darker bass tones. Brought together with Silkie's trademark talkbox finesse, the only woozy after effects will be a love hangover. Blessy.

Computer Sound (4:39)
Review: Soloman Rose aka Silkie returns for Deep Medi; the dubstep label run by Mala of Digital Mystikz, while in addition appearing on labels as diverse as Antisocial Entertainment, Soul Jazz and Skream's Disfigured Dubz. This follows up last month's wicked Topper Top EP and it's more of the same street level, low end theories once again. Starting out with the wonky, thumping, horns-led stomp of the title track, there's more quality on offer with "Jah Man" and its proper low end snarl, supported by hypnotic chime pads. On the flip, get ready for the straight up and bouncy grime stylings of "Computer Sound" serving up some late night pirate radio vibes for sure.
