Review: Duploc continue to fly the flag for true-skool dubstep with their digital output and a renewed run of vinyl pressings. Duploc Blaxck Tapes 2.0 originally dropped back in 2022 and the tracks from the likes of Hamdi, Hypho and ENiGMA Dubz were instantly getting picked up by such respected selectors as Youngsta, Sicaria Sound and Riz La Teef. It's not hard to see why, given the label's declared focus on "the heavier dubstep sound" with incendiary results. If you want to test some subs with the gnarliest 140 gear around, this record is all you need.

Two Sacred Swords (DJ Madd remix)
Review: Steppas head honcho Alpha joins forces with prolific toaster Lutan Fyah for a rootical exercise in traditional dub. With a bumping bassline and sugar-sweet vocals, it's a fantastic transitional track that's guaranteed to enjoy plenty of exposure this festival season. For added club-focussed welly (and some lovely cymbal splashes) head for DJ Madd's remix.

Review: Pull up! Peng Sound come through like a pile of bricks with this latest extended EP by the unstoppable Dubkasm, an artist which we always rely on for the deeper, more reggae-laden end of the steppers spectrum. "Ancient Order", a track representative of the majority of this release, is roots music for the next century, where mystical vocals are blended with shadowy electronics and digitized beats. "Zulu" is another scorcher, where Dubkasm's steppers mode come to light most prominently. Dread-proof and heartically dubwise, flash it!

Enigma Dubz - "Dirty South" (5:34)
Lost - "Turmoil" (5:08)
Bukez Finezt - "Real 2 Real" (3:17)
Requake - "Fear" (5:02)
Artroniks - "Extinction" (5:36)
Review: Belgian dubstep outpost Duploc celebrate five years of support with this fittingly heavy and forward-thinking five tracker. Enigma Dubz gets real with an obscene oscillator that rumbles heavily in a way that wouldn't have gone amiss on Immerse 10 years ago, Lost take us deep into the woods on a sledge of toxic bass slurry while Bukez Finezt lets loose in the freestyle way only he knows how. Elsewhere Requake spook us out with a sparse design and croaked-out bass textures while Artroniks wraps up on an iced-out sci-fi tip. Duploc know a dark groove when they hear one. Here's to five more years.

Kodama & LX One - "Cronauer" (4:40)
Kodama - "Piranha Plant" (5:05)
Kodama - "Dorsia" (4:28)
Review: Last spotted on Strictly 140's Overseas VA LP, Spanish new-gen bass chef serves up his biggest dish to date on Subaltern. Linking up with longstanding baron XL One for the opener, 'Cronauer'. Unhurried, twinkling but laced with a bitter bass bite, it sets the dark dream tone. 'Piranha Plant' and 'Dorsia' see Kodama going solo. The former is a woozy arpeggiated charmer that sits on the hip-hop side of the beat spectrum. The latter hums with similar melancholy but much more of an edge to the drums and that ominous waspy bass tone. Graveyard grooves.

Cat: LIVITY 048. Rel: 07 Jul 21
Grapefruit (6:26)
Microshift (5:12)
Make It Circular (5:18)
Constant (4:41)
Review: Manchester's Lack is back on Livity Sound a year after his last masterclass on the Inside EP. Once again he takes out his scalpel and does some precision work together together UK bass, minimalism, dub and techno. Every track is floaty light yet muscular. The drums hit hard but are also somehow barely there. Floating ambient pads drift next to skeletal jungle rhythms and dark bass hops or lurches beneath the precision drum programming. 'Grapefruit' is a downtempo opener to get the vibe going, then the quiet artistry of 'Microshift' gets the party going, 'Make It Circular' is for the heads at 5am and the fluttering melodies of 'Constant' make a shout for tune of the EP.

Review: Version time: Innamind look back over the vaults and pick two of their many cult subversive tracks and hand them over to two of the modern game's most distinctive craftsmen for remix duties. The results speak for themselves as Egoless charges up LAS' "Uuha" with a whole new layer of organic instrumental funk while Foamplate flips Ago's "Why Won't You" into much starker pastures, injecting the already eerie skanker with stacks more space. Don't sleep on this.

Cluedub (4:40)
Boa (5:08)
Cluedub (Skeptical remix) (4:39)
Review: We're not sure who Leftlow is/are but anything with the System stamp of approval passes all necessary filters. Especially when the lead track whisks you straight back to 2006 with the squelchiest hook this side of "Cluedub"'s dub dungeon and a sub grumpier than thunder. "Boa" is a little more contemporary in its minimal Rotterdam style. Strange, stripped back and sprung with a peculiar bounce that's as addictive as it is trippy, with its soft, subtle kick it's a genuinely unique piece of 140 craft. For good measure Skeptical swings by for a knock out remix of "Cluedub" where even more flabby low end gets baked in the mix. Don't get left out.

Loefah - "Disko Rekah" (5:17)
Coki - "All Of A Sudden" (4:15)
Review: We've been saying for a hot minute that a dubstep reveal is due, if not already here - even though, as is the case with any revival, the purists will say the sound never went away. We would like to submit as supporting evidence this reissue of a stone cold classic split 12" from 2009 from serious dubstep heavyweights Loofah and Coki. It came on the pioneering Deep Mehdi Musik label and some 14 years on still has plenty of dark late night allure and killer low end wobble. Two definitive tracks that we can't wait to start hearing out again on loud systems.

Loefah - "Natural Charge" (4:23)
D1 - "Crack Bong" (Loefah remix) (5:10)
Review: Look at what we have here... Two mythical nugs from dubstep's heartiest primordial soup courtesy of Croydon pioneer DMZ's Loefah. "Natural Charge" stutters with those clipped drums leaving stacks of space for those humungous iconic bass drones to bounce around while his remix of D1 drives a heavier plough with pushed drums, technoid bleeps and that gritty warehouse intensity. Both seminal jams from the FWD>> era, both on dub ever since... These have been sought after for many years.

Foretold (feat Ourman) (5:33)
Asakusa (6:02)
Mortician (3:58)
Grizzly (4:39)
Review: Now here's a Lofty story... A young Bristol artist makes his debut on Za's White Peach last year. 'Solstice', an EP that matches White Peach (and its brother label Fent Plates) in vibe, spirit and musicality. Now comes the follow-up 'Foretold'. Four more beguiling, highly musical and atmospheric 140 jams laced with plenty of eastern instrumentation; 'Foretold' (with Ourman) takes a well-used choir sample and sets the scene with some creeped out synth lines and trappy 808s. 'Asakusa' takes the mystical vibe even further with a big string line more of a classic deep dubstep feel while 'Mortician' just goes full-on suck-you-into-another-universe spell-binding mode. Thanks to its hairy bassline, 'Grizzly' concludes with bear swagger.

Review: Lanky newcomer Lofty makes his debut on White Peach following his recent run of Bandcamp releases. Four tracks in total, here the young Bristol talent stretches his legs and runs us through his rootsical moods and sci-fi flavours. 'Solstice' starts the trip on a melancholy wavey one, all 808s and sad horns. Deeper we chew into the peach, we're hit with strong Middle Eastern spices on the sweltering march of 'Desert Storm', we crunch down on the stone with the mean, teeth-baring 'Nightfall' and spit it back out to the triumphant, trance-like euphoria of finale track 'Impetus'. Peachy.

Review: Longtime friend of White Peach, Lofty returns to Zha's label with four more pristine oddities and odysseys. Following where he left us with 'Foretold', 'Supernova' takes us back into the Berlin style of sizzling arpeggios and crisp futurism. It's backed up by plenty more heat from across the spectrum: 'Embrace' is a UK funky style twister, 'Joyless' nods at the Hyperdub style of UK bass with a strong nod to UKG while 'Daybreak' carries that cathedral-like euphoria up a notch to halftime pastures. Immense.

Ancient Mariner (3:52)
Review: Following up some promising releases for the likes of Stern Plates, Albion Collective and Locus Sound, Lord Jabu is back with the Formality EP on Kirbstomp & Sepia's Hotplates Records. On the A side, we have the kushed-out, bass-driven hypnotism of the title track, which is exactly the kind of street sound dub that we like. On the flip, the quirky and psychedelic 'Ancient Mariner' will entrance you with its creepy vocal and warbling melody, which lurk around an infectious guitar solo sample - and really gives the track its magic.

Review: Lord a mercy, it's Lord Jabu and he's bearing down heavily on the Locus Sound who finally follow up last summer's killer 001 from SBK. Three tracks full, each one full of drama and spooky storytelling. "El Molino" takes us on a midnight graveyard stroll, all shadowy and pranged while "Swarm" brings the funk with a powerful 2007 flavoured widescreen bassline. Finally "Buccaneer" does a sea shanty on your mum and dad's bed, its creepy bassline not caring if the sheets become untucked. Scandalously good.

Yagoda (2:50)
Review: Not to be confused with Young Echo associates Jabu, the unrelated Lord Jabu is a 20-something producer with one previous release to his name. According to Albion Collective, his latest EP "synthesizes solid state trap with 64-bit dream-ware". We're not quite sure what that means, but opener "Treehead" is a distorted and mind-altering blend of lo-fi chip-tune melodies, mangled ice cream van chimes, bowel-bothering bass and rumbling post-grime dubstep beats. His passion for Sinclair Spectrum synth sounds is further explored on the flip, first on the trap style shuffle of "Folklore" and then via the pleasingly tuneful - if cracked and twisted - closing cut "Yagoda".

Review: Low End Activism follow up a head turning first EP with a quick second offering just a month later. The label is the latest from the tireless UK workhorse behind Sneaker Social Club and this release once again comes from Low End Activist. They offer just the one single this time - 'Invite Chaos (Kill Dem' feat Sikka Rymes, but it sure is a deadly one with militant drums and lurching drums all finished with darkened mantras from Sikka. Next to the instrumental is a raw, brain frazzling Low Jack remix that also breaks into a more melodic and summery phase before sinking back into its own nasty bass. Loraine James remixes things to a more punchy and high energy framework.

Review: Echo Chamber sound bossman LQ takes us back to the rare-as-hens-teeth Echo Plate dub from 2016 with two new twists. The Hardware mix cuts straight to the chase with the dominant alien croaking bassline taking centre stage almost instantly. Ishan Sound then continues to add a little more theatre with lavish strokes of eastern strings and added layers of percussion. Finally we have a brand new cut "Dubplate Jugglin'". Following LQ and Midnight Dubs' last co-lab "Smuggler's Anthem", it's another thoroughbred jungle twist with full attention paid to the brain-melting detailed drum edits. Get running.

LSN & Youngsta - "End Theme" (feat ZAMEEN-A) (8:52)
Review: LSN's music is always constructed with a real sense of foreboding and plenty of textural girt. That is the case again here with some enacting and snapping drum work and extra heavy mic work. But that's not to say the sound is austere - they still draw you in with enticing rhythms and structures that you want to gaze at. 'Power Shift' (feat Flowdan) is a top opener with arching bass and badman bars while 'Devolve' is more angsty and unsettled with its broken beats. 'Trust' is icy and full of late-night tension then LSN & Youngsta's 'End Theme' (feat ZAMEEN-A) closes with some lush string sounds over neck-snapping beats.

"AI" is loose, woozy and rolls with some fantastically off-grid breaks, "Spirit Dub" is a steppy odyssey waiting to crack heads while "Machine" is moody, muggy number with more loose kicks, wandering keytar leads and stacks for space for the space-bound vocals. Finally we hit the funkiest cut of the collection: "Breakin'". Dreamy, sleazy and guaranteed to take you to faraway places. Celebrate to automate.

Review: Deep mischief from the Bangor triad LSN. Their first EP since December 2018, it's an instant hit of low end refreshment that stretches the full terrain. On the A: "I Don't Know What That Means" is a deeply trippy workout that turns the spoken word samples inside out while "Oscillator" flips for a raw vocal cut that swaggers and smoulders in equal measure. Meanwhile on the B: "Gone For Never" is a stern jam sprung with a tightly coiled buzzing riff and "Rubberhands" brings every bit as much funk as its name implies. Squelchy.
