Karnage & Dayzero - "No One" (3:45)
Guesswerk - "Persian Dub" (4:55)
Review: The cavendish crusaders are at it again. And this time they're rolling out the barrels with full V/A power. Chad Dubz opens with the provocatively titled "Pricks", all sludgy, swampy and twisted while Karnage & Dayzero up the energy with a dramatic symphonic loopy nod to the far east on "No One" while Guesswerk close the show with the long awaited "Persian Dub". On dub for a good couple of years, this gravel throated swinger has been doing the business for a select amount of DJs for some time. Now it's finally yours. From Bristol with fruit. Tuck in and be quick about it.

Truth - "Show Dem" (3:57)
Khiva - "Flight Club" (3:45)
Review: Having already offered up the first part of their 50th release trilogy, the Deep Dark & Dangerous crew slams down volume two. While its predecessor focused on undeniably deep cuts, this edition is all about aural darkness. Enigma Dubz gets things going in fine style via the slow-spaced out riddims, creepy sub-bass and clandestine electroic motifs of "Exosphere", before Pushloop reaches for oddball sci-fi vocal samples, punishing wobble-bass and maniacal laughter on "Age Of Fear". Truth weighs in with the bleeping, slow-stepping haziness and bowel-bothering bass of "Show Dem", while Khiva opts for a vibrating sub-bassline, metallic hits and tons of ricocheting effects on closing cut "Flight Club".

Korin Complex - "The Person You Might've Been" (VGB remix) (5:57)
Review: Bleak Winter whip up another highly limited storm with this powerful 12 that combines two very different approaches to bass yet share a similar glacial spirit. Inyoka takes the A with two incredibly emotive trips; the brilliantly titled "Beryl" is a dreamy march through the thickest of snow while wrapped up in the cosiest roadman coat you've ever fleece-lined under the glaze of the northern lights while "Turbines" is a more poignant, turbulent flight back home. Flip for more of a concrete adventure as Korin Complex makes his grimey beats shiver with the jitters on "Interlinked" before icing you out with junglised two-step on "The Person You Might've Been". For added vinyl-only pleasure VGB shoves us in the deep freeze with his remix. Ain't no spring on the horizon.

Review: Big dubstep charmer K Lone serves up two gems for you lovers out there... 'Squelch' is a juicy trouser dropper led by beautiful filtered keys. West coast via West Ham, it's all about the UK G-funk right here. And the B-side is just as romantic; 'With Luv' takes us even deeper into the blend with dreamy hooks, big swaying pads and just a little eastern charm on those strings. Perfect summer magic.

Dread
Late Night Blues (feat Rider Shafique)
Review: While dubstep continues to splinter into its myriad variations, from toe-curling pop to ear-splitting bangers and everything in between, it's reassuring to find a continued stream of producers interested in exploring the original space the genre occupied, where the evolutionary path is a much slower one. Kahn represents a strong case on his debut for Deep Medi, which is by and large a classicist approach to dubstep (as you might well expect for Mala's imprint). In his previous outings he has tackled a staggering range from synth heavy steppers, refined and modernist garage, to raucous grime and rootsy digi-dub. The incendiary vocal lick that kicks off "Dread" rasps and spits with the grit of 80s dancehall, instantly recalling the addictively unsettling grunts and groans of ragga MCs on the earliest jungle tracks. With some considered vocal assistance from Rider Shafique, "Late Night Blues" comes on startlingly stripped-back, fuelled by a crisp beat and soothing sub bass rumble. The glacial chord swell and distant clangs only serve to cool things even further, and once again the delay gets opened up to fire the drums off into the ether. It's a pristine turn, eschewing fireworks and shifting dynamics for a slow and steady twist-out, building up the feedback but never letting it run away from itself.

Imhotep (Boofy remix) (5:09)
Review: Bristol boy Khan remains a leading light on the bass heavy end of the city's electronic spectrum and follows up a thrilling three-way collab with Ishan Sound and Rider Shafique from earlier in the year with a new down and dirty ditty. 'Imhotep' (named after an Egyptian chancellor to the Pharaoh Djoser, who was also an architect responsible for the Djoser's step pyramid and high preset of the sun god Ra) is a mysterious tune with real warmth. The skeletal beats and hits make the groove while sustained pads and distant motifs all draw you in deep. Boofy remixes it into something a little more direct but just as deep.

Review: Chameleonic Bristolian Kahn continues his peerless run of releases with a killer self-titled double 12" release for the Blackbox label that's filed alongside his Deep Medi and Hotline transmissions in our affections. The immediate standout track is undoubtedly "Badman City" which features the incomparable vocals of Flowdan, the Bug collaborator who was sampled on Kahn & Neek's superb "Percy". Whilst Flowdan's delivery on that Bandulu cut was lifted roughly from his barrelling live MCing, here he's in notably more menacing form. Rider Shafique and fellow Young Echo acolyte Jabu also provide vocals with the latter's delivery on "Snake Eyes" sounding somewhat akin to Tricky aping Mike Skinner. A bold release from one of the UK's most impressive talents.

Review: Witness the sickness. Kahn & Neek reunite for their first release in over four years on Boofy's Sector 7 and the wait's been more than worth it. Still full of tension, still unbounded, still heavy as elephants, "(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss" takes the lead and it's classic K&N business with its grime elements and big downpitched string riff. It's backed by three more disarming messages: Both "Random Lab" and "Shimmer" take things down to 130 creating more space between the drum hits and heavy chords before "Venus" bids the last farewell with dense atmospheres, big clouds of harmonics and some unique drum sounds. Let's hope they don't leave it another four years.

Review: Since 2015, deep dubstep explorer Corin Bornoff AKA Karma has put out one EP a year. This year's was delayed, it seems, but it has finally appeared - just as 2018 is wheezing its' last, scarlet-faced breath. Opener "Bluefoot" was arguably worth the wait, though. Built around a skewed but still stepping, reggae-fired dubstep "ridim", the track shuffles along on a wave of hushed shakers, ultra-deep sub-bass and intergalactic dub-wise effects. Over on the flipside, "Choose Life" is surprisingly positive, with Bornoff wrapping ear-catching synthesizer melodies, alien electronics and UK steppas style bass around a punchy drum track.

A sub-zero V/A affair, this second instalment ranges from the acidic synth echoes of Karnage & MarkIV's planet-bashing "Zenith" right through to the barbed woozy jazzy haze of Nixsin's "Dreamin'". Other highlights include Korin Complex's staccato data funk gem "Off Kilter" and Deadroom's warm-skanked soul on "Arbaria". Wrap up warm.

Fulminating (4:13)
Review: Russian artist Kercha is back on Brighton label DNO Records with a new EP that follows his collaborative effort back in Feb. He once again brings his familiar snap of each half-step snare and plenty of low frequency bass to all four cuts. There is mystery and wobble in 'Hold The Breath', lovely sub to get lost in on 'Jazz Symptoms' and broken beat bliss on 'Suggestion.' Last of all, the super slow motion 'Fulminating' gets you in a glacial trance and sinks you ever deep into the bottomless bass. These are postmodern rhythms of the highest order.

Review: Russian producer Kercha has already served up two superb EPs that cemented his reputation as a contemporary deep dubstep great, and now he backs it up with a standout first EP of 2021. His Mental Ballast EP comes on the label he is a firm part of, DNO Records, and is complete with his signature off-kilter rhythms. Opener 'Ignornants' has shimmering oscillations and deep, dark dub. Plenty of subtle samples flesh out the eerie groove including a clip of Russian maestro E. Ponasenkov. 'Analysis' is another gem, this time with Berlin artist Yoofee with plenty of purple flourishes. There is serious wobble to 'Tigers' that keeps you on edge and 'Acid' is a real spin out to close.

Rez - "Politics" (4:08)
Review: London's Encrypted Audio are back with a new release by Stockholm's Kloudmen, who started sending music to the label back in 2015 - that chief Content described as 'next level'. Getting rinsed by major scene players such as Caspa and Hatcha played a large part in this EP's early potential. By now ENV 0121 would mark their seventh release for the label, where the duo collaborated with Kevin Clark aka REZ, a producer out of St. Louis, Missouri. Featuring the brooding atmosphere of deep dubstep jams such as 'Problem' and the contorted, off-kilter beat action of 'Paracusia', while on the flip Clark goes solo on the darkly dystopian dub of 'Politics'.

Review: Fresh from releases on labels such as Subaltern and Infernal, Spanish producer Kodama lands on Rarefied with two glistening jams. '2D' takes us straight to the beach or a long summer drive on an open road. Shimmering guitars, subtle vocals and big Latin-spiced waves of emotion, this is perfect for the sunny season. It's backed by the more dancefloor focused garage hybrid 'Honeyed'. Pushed-sludgy twosteps, swathes of textures and strings and vocals, it's another fantastical journey with that little flamenco twist at the end. Bueno.

Review: Last spotted on Strictly 140's Overseas VA LP, Spanish new-gen bass chef serves up his biggest dish to date on Subaltern. Linking up with longstanding baron XL One for the opener, 'Cronauer'. Unhurried, twinkling but laced with a bitter bass bite, it sets the dark dream tone. 'Piranha Plant' and 'Dorsia' see Kodama going solo. The former is a woozy arpeggiated charmer that sits on the hip-hop side of the beat spectrum. The latter hums with similar melancholy but much more of an edge to the drums and that ominous waspy bass tone. Graveyard grooves.

Review: Ilian Tape's ITX series is a place to hear music that veers away from the Munich stable's usual sound. This time it is Mia Kaden who has free roaming rights and uses the four-track EP to explore glitchy broken beats and deep, menacing dubstep. '10easy' is pure late-night and futuristic urban metropolis with drilling low ends and trippy neon melodies, then 'Racket' has a trap feel with its crisp snares and withering pads. There's plenty of low-end wobble to the cavernous dub that is 'Sludge' and another dark dub feel to 'Apres Vous' with its swaggering drums and echoing hits.

Review: Koma returns to the scene of the crime, finishing off what he started in 2018. First there was ENV 018 with massive tracks like 'Uncle Sullivan' and 'Moonlight'. Then came some very cheeky unauthorised versions in 2020 which most definitely weren't on Encrypted (the release was even called NOT-ENV to prove this!) Now he returns with ENV 018.1, another stately slab of wax comprising three smouldering 140 jams... The purring 'Dialtone', the militant march and thundering bumps of 'Flick' and finally the woozy swagger and eerie tension of 'Untitled'. Each one as heavy as the last, rumour has it he'll be back with an album. We can't wait.

Review: Koma is one-fifth of Chonk Mob as well as being a fine solo artist. He was a late arrival to the Encrytped Audio family but more than made up for it with his standout offerings. This time out he offers a bootleg of Bazzi - 'Mine' which has a pained vocal lead and dragging trap beats all finished with some cloudy synths and crisp hits. It's a deep and tender cut then on the flip he serves up 'Alicias Keys'. This one rides a rising chord vamp and jittery but weighty beat with fizzing static, bright synth stabs and glassy melodies all adding light and future soul.

Review: Kromestar taps into some seriously menacing and original dubstep sounds on this new EP for Nebula Music Group. London producer Kromestar has been at this for almost 20 years now and has served up plenty of the genre's finest moments on labels like Deep Heads and Deep Medi. He hasn't lost his shine even now as opener 'Bloodshed' shows with its screwy low ends and eviscerating synth leads all topped off with smashing hits. On the flip is 'Avatar' which takes a different tack - this one is all liquid bass rumbles and lazy drum tumbles with haunting pad and a late-night sense of futuristic serenity.

'Kalawanji' is the infamous debut release by London producer Kromestar, with vocals by Cessman, and first came out on Deep Medi in 2006. Review: The Deep Heads crew comes through with a first sampler from their third volume of Deep Heads Dubstep cuts. It's another one all about heavy bass and heady atmospheres and another one that proves that dubstep can still be a vital sound when done right. Kromestar opens with 'Another Day' and its dreamy space synths, then 'Congi' cooks up lurching beats and lunging chords for a lovely late night vibe. Biome's 'Night Flight' is an exquisitely programmed drum work out that floats in mid-air and Josh Vishnu closes down this fine EP with the darker mood and cavernous bass of 'Truth'.

"When Shall We Rise" is little less than a modern dancefloor dub masterpiece: a fine chunk of fusion in which Middle Eastern instrumentation and pro-working class/anti-elite vocals rise above a pitched down, steppers style riddim, echoing keyboard riffs and a booming digital bassline. Flipside "When Shall We Dub" is, if anything, even better, with exotic instrumentation echoing into the distance while a beefed-up version of the killer riddim rumbles away below.
