  1. Undubbed (4:42)
  2. Medication (4:38)
Review: Both parties involved in this dispatch are on a serious roll right now... J Kenzo's Artikal continues to go from strength to strength with its boundary smelting visions while Causa's currency continues to rise as more and more established men co-sign him as a hot future prospect. In fact, as proved by the bulbous squidge of "Medication" and the Tubby horn flares and fissures of "Undubbed", Causa isn't just a hot future prospect... He's killing it in the present too. Serious dubstep business.

Cat: IFS 013. Rel: 30 Jan 19
  1. Wrath Of God (4:37)
  2. Dilemma (4:11)
  3. Fuck 'em (4:10)
Review: Dubzy's back with some biblical business, old testament style: "Wrath Of God" lives up to its name with swaggering near-operatic levels of theatre and drama and high levels of smite in the subs. "Dilemma" softens the vibe a little thanks to a set of Oriental pipes and a springy funk in the drums. Finally, "Fuck 'Em" shuts the EP down with a swampy 2007-style system shake. Loose percussion, big string strikes and a few surprises in bassline; the omnipotent Chad is in fine form here. Smiting ain't easy.

Cat: FAV 005. Rel: 08 Aug 17
  1. Kingdom Dub (5:36)
  2. Space Cadet (4:56)
  3. Drainpipe (5:34)
Review: Foundation sounds from the man like Dubz and limited to 300. This is serious: "Kingdom Dub" is a tree-swinging powerhouse with a chest-beating bassline and superb swing in the weighted drums. "Space Cadet" strips down the session to the naked rudiments as a heavily reverbed drum slaps and warped FX tickle. "Drainpipe" seals the deal on a trippy note where the rhythmic elements have been slow cooked to a squishy malleable texture. You know what to do...

  3. Maje
Review: The re-born R&S Records imprint has gone from strength to strength over the past 18 months. Against all the odds, the former Belgian rave behemoth has become a 'must-check' for fans of forward-thinking bass music and twisted, floor-friendly electronica. Here, they continue that theme, with R&S office boy Dan Foat resurrecting his partnership with pal Nathan Boddy as The Chain. Last time out (2009) they were making techno; nowadays they're laying down wonky medieval rave music that layers harpsichord samples on top of dubstep beats. It's pretty tasty. B-Side "Maja", a kind of Joey Beltram-on-speed rave banger that could have dropped on R&S in '92, is humungous, too.

  2. Teardrops (5:51)
Review: Following last summer's scorching anonymous first CV white label "War / Fan Dem Off", RDG's label returns with another mysterious never-to-be-repressed doublet. Fittingly cold and wintry for this time of year, both "Sly" and the much-coveted "Teardrop" are taken to glacial places. Deep, smoky, spacious and foggy, both cuts burn long smouldering fires both at home and in the dance. Grab them while they're ice cold.

Dolphin (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: LAB 014. Rel: 12 Feb 13
  1. Dolphin
  2. Fossil
Review: Let's go swimming with dolphins. So deep you could dive in with a submarine in your pocket and not hit the bottom, "Dolphins" is a truly oceanic slab of tidal two-step. Shimmering and sparkling with untold musical secrets, it's one of Cluekid's deepest cuts to date. "Fossil" is slightly darker; rolling with liquid tech groove and warm, resonant flux-bass, there's nothing archaic about it at all.

Cat: VV TWO. Rel: 06 Feb 18
  1. Hiss (King Kobra) (5:39)
  2. Tachyon Field (Cranky Wasp) (5:12)
Review: Absolute fire from OG Cluekid: Vinyl Vigilance have delivered something seriously special right here. Bouncing and bubbling like it's 2006 all over again, "Hiss" wobbles and warps with such a classic twang, you'll forget the last 10 years of dubstep ever happened. "Tachyon Field" continues on the same vibe but with a much darker, downward spiralling muted chainsaw bassline. Timeless jams and strictly limited - you know what to do.

Haymaker (12")
Cat: DMZ 026. Rel: 02 Apr 12
  1. Haymaker
  2. Revolution
Review: The DMZ imprint continues its enviable run of form with Coki on solo duties for the double drop Haymaker. It's not hard to see why the Digital Mystikz lynchpin chose the title, named in honour of the down stroke mid range deviancy that appears with the intent to scar your intestines as soon as the JAH sample drops over a suitably crunching half step swagger. It's matched if not bettered by the flipside excursion "Revolution" which conjures up imagery of Coki recording the mental sounds of a room of analogue machinery failing and applying the results to a jagged flexing drum rhythm!

Demonator (12")
Cat: AWD 004. Rel: 25 Mar 14
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
Review: Classic Coki behaviour and support surround this release: Tentatively discussed across the forums and Facebook pages since Chefal exposed them on Rinse well over a year ago... Both the savage cut-throat drops of "Demonator" and the mind-bending fusion of "Indian Girl" showcase Coki at his very best. The latter will serve as a secret weapon for peak time antics while the former will add colour and fun to any dance thanks to its insane measures of musicality and left-minded influence sources. Demonstratively big.

Buckwild (12")
Cat: MEDI 061. Rel: 04 Sep 12
  1. Buckwild
  2. Axis
Review: Deep Medi Musik's northern correspondent Commodo truly impressed with the Commodo double pack that surfaced earlier this year, ensuring expectations are at a premium as he returns to Mala's label for a third outing. Over the course of its six years of existence to date, Deep Medi has increasingly become relied upon for those seeking out some proper 140bpm head business and Buckwild ensures standards are maintained with drums that constantly threaten to veer off grid under pressure from the densely layered, cluttered percussion and low end bass that only reveals its true power on a worthy system. There's a drunken funk to the twisted flow of the track that will appeal to many, and it's complemented by "Axis" with a tighter, metallic flex that swaggers forth as Commodo flickers between strange dubbed out refrains.

Space Cash (12")
Cat: MEDI 071. Rel: 23 Jul 13
  1. Space Cash
  2. Straight Reptilian
  3. Wish
Review: Deep Medi Musik's Commodo has remained defiantly anonymous, with little information out there despite the three critically lauded releases for Mala's label in recent years. Resurfacing once more for a timely Deep Medi transmission, the producer is giving nothing more away here on the three track Space Cash 12" which brandishes some brilliantly ghoulish cover art courtesy of Tom J Newell. The title track sets the tone, commencing like some lost 60s spy thriller before degraded drums swagger drunkenly into focus and call a heaving bassline into action, whilst the vicious "Straight Reptilian" sees Commodo operate on the down stroke, creating an aggressive monster that's filled with a dizzying level of rhythmic detail in full flow. "Wish" retains the degraded feel of its predecessors, ricocheting a recycled soul hook around stuttering half step programming with a sense of unpredictability that never gets tired.

Cat: ACRE 060. Rel: 24 Feb 16
  1. Set It Straight (feat Rocks Foe) (2:57)
  2. Solid Gold Telephone (3:42)
Review: Commodo's debut album How What Time is en route and Black Acre are getting us in the mood with this super-limited 12". On-radar for the last month online, "Set It Straight" finally enjoys the wax treatment. Clunky, trippy, droning and blessed with spitfire bars, Rocks Foe brings out Commodo's funkiest side. "Solid Gold Telephone" is equally pleasing and perplexing; loaded by waterfall rhythmic cascades, shifting kicks, sudden switches into jazz chords and space lasers, it's Commodo at his finest and most forward-thinking. Hurry, though; it's also Commodo at his most limited. 300 copies, no future presses...

  1. F_ck Mountain (4:22)
  2. Good Grief (4:37)
Review: ** hotline repress ** Hotline Recordings is fast becoming one of Bristol's most vital vinyl-only imprints, delivering various strands of low-end heavy music from Kahn & Neek, Lurka and Rachael across its three releases so far. The latest piece of wax to be revealed via their voicemail service is from Commodo, a producer whose previous outings for labels like Deep Medi and Black Box have shown him to be one of the more reliable young artists currently holding the torch for the classic dubstep sound. As such the F_ck Mountain/Good Grief 12? is a stark contrast to the Sotofett jungle remix of the label's last release from Rachael, with a return to the kind of sound last heard on Lurka's plate for Hotline. "F_ck Mountain" sees Commodo in more familiar 140BPM territory a "lean take on original dubstep" on the A-side pitching and yawing around the rudest of basslines," while "Good Grief" has more in common with the work of Beneath and Alex Coulton, coming described as "a pneumatic sprung weapon that bounces in around the 130 mark".

Cat: MEDI 075. Rel: 03 Dec 13
  1. Narabeh
  2. Alpha
Review: With a string of well supported releases on labels such as Redshift One, Kokeshi and Boka, Manchester sub-surgeon Compa makes his debut on Deep Medi. The result, as you'd expect, is mesmerising from the off. "Narabeh" is as spacious as dubstep gets; stretched pads moan in the background while percussive elements ricochet off each other with spellbinding effect and bass plunges barge into the fore. "Alpha", meanwhile, slinks and sways with a hypnotic hand-drum percussive groove and a sharp, spiked out slo-mo arpeggio. Seriously hooky.

Murder Dub (1-sided hand-stamped 10")
Cat: KILLA 002. Rel: 22 May 14
  1. Murda Dub
Review: Killa Sound maintain the heat transmissions given off by DJ Madd's version of Candy Man that launched the one sided 10" series, turning to Compa for the seriously heavyweight Murda Dub platter. If you're acquainted with the work Manchester sub-surgeon Compa has done previously for Deep Medi, Redshift One and Boka you will currently be experiencing some subconscious licking of lips - rightly so too - and the more attentive bass warriors out there will be fully familiar with this soundclash murder weapon. There have been plenty of Welcome To Jamrock versions over the years but it's been a while since we've heard one that remains true to it's original vibe whilst bringing some serious steppahs action to the table.

Cat: LIONCHG 012. Rel: 23 Jun 15
  1. Kingdom (4:40)
  2. Kingdom (Bass Drum version) (4:20)
Review: Manchester sub-surgeon Compa has been in rampant form these past few years, first surfacing on Boka in 2012 and going on to issue limited 12"s left right and centre for Deep Medi, Kokeshi, Killah Sound and more. After an illicit, under the counter fired up version of Bob Marley's "Exodus" from Compa surfaced earlier this year, he's back and adding Lion Charge to his discography with a two track exercise in dub science. We've tested this 12" on the office turntable and soundclips don't do the bass on lead track "Kingdom" justice at all!! Complementing this, Compa lines the B side with a Bass Drum version which adds even more heft!

  2. Crack Chimes (5:03)
Review: Two heavily respected Manchester mandem collide on J:Kenzo's Artikal: Compa provides a fluid blend of trappy dub that lurks and lingers beneath Fox's instantly distinctive flow perfectly. Think My Nu Leng's "Masterplan" but much more pensive, stern and ultimately heavier. "Crack Chimes" hits with a little more edge thanks to the fractured chime riff and the superb 808 drums that fume beneath the melody with unabashed displays of muscle. A serious release with every party on top of their game.
