Can't Stop Dancin'
  1. Can't Stop Dancin'
  2. Can't Stop Dancin' (instrumental)
Review: This production from boogie-era soul specialist Clark Jay has long been a sought-after item amongst collectors, with original copies of the 1981 Peach Tree Records 12" changing hands for significant sums online. Even if you're unfamiliar with it - and outside of record collecting circles, most people are - we'd recommend checking the sound clips of this first ever seven-inch reissue. 'Can't Stop Dancing' is particularly sweet and summery, with Jonnie 'Vibes' Lambert singing about his love of shaking his stuff atop spacey synthesizer lines and a relaxed, laidback disco-boogie groove. That tidy groove can be enjoyed further on the flipside instrumental mix, which makes excellent use of the original's female backing vocals and the aforementioned synthesizer melodies.

I'm Here Again
Cat: MXMRK 2038. Rel: 29 Jan 21
  1. I'm Here Again (edit By Mr. K - Homage To Frankie Knuckles & Larry Levan)
  2. Girl You Need A Change Of Mind (edit By Mr. K)
Review: A - A true top-five peak record at The Garage, this Thelma Houston burner from 1977 was "a highlight whenever Larry played it," Danny Krivit recalls... "and he played it a lot!" Danny's edit is a homage to Larry and Frankie Knuckles - in particular, a reel to reel edit that Frankie did back in the day and shared with Krivit. "Reels were problematic, & when I tried to get it again from him, unfortunately he had lost it too." The song (a clear attempt by Motown to capitalize on the previous year's monster hit "Don't Leave Me This Way"). What sets "I'm Here Again" apart though, is the incredible second half, not surprisingly also the main focus of Mr. K's edit, along with a new straight to the point intro. Over a vicious groove reminiscent of the Originals' "Down To Love Town" breakdown (Michael Sutton wrote and produced both "Love Town" and "I'm Here Again") Houston delivers soul-stirring ad libs as the band crackles with electricity behind her, the piano chasing a descending string riff so eagerly it almost trips over itself. Pure dancefloor peak energy!

B - This band was a departure from the usual Motown session guys, and was comprised of a group called the Young Senators from Washington, DC. Who later formed the nucleus of Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers. Motown was finalizing its move from Detroit to Los Angeles, and this 1972 Eddie Kendricks session was among the last to be recorded at the famed "Snake Pit" aka Studio A in Detroit. According to Young Senators percussionist Jimi Dougans, "Girl" was recorded at three o'clock in the morning, which perhaps accounts for some of the heavy vibe and distinctly different sound than the typical Motown pop style the label was known for. In a time before 12-inch singles, this was one of those first "made for a club" proto-disco records that could hold its power and even shine on a big system. In fact, Larry Levan used it to test the sound at the Garage. When he got "Girl" sounding good, Danny says, "he knew the system was really pumping and anything else he played would sound good too." The original album cut "was typical of a lot of records, where producers fade out right when the record is climaxing," Danny says. "On a dance floor where people absolutely love the record... they'll just look at the DJ like, 'Why'd you fade it out?'" Taking matters into his own hands, Mr. K edit again aims at the climactic back half of the song, engineering a nearly 7-minute climatic dance floor filler.

  1. Knee Deep (edit) (4:12)
  2. Mothership Bonus Beats (remix) (3:54)
Review: Jorun Bombay likes to muck about with all sorts of different beats, but he always does it with real skill and personality. That's made him one Canada's most revered hip hop stars and here he tackles the one and only Parliament. His version of "Knee Deep" with its extra bass weight and shrill synth lines bring the party vibes thanks to the feel good pianos. "Mothership Bonus Beats" on the flip is a late night, slow and sleazy jam to get you in the mood. The squelchy synth bass is to die for, the drawn out horns linger long in the air making it a perfectly steamy cut.

Authentic to its soulful core, the release is perfectly timed as we're all beginning to miss the summer moving into the colder months. It's backed by an equally sunny shakedown version of "Funky Sensation" getting a precision Bombay treatment. Sensational.

Cat: SM 002. Rel: 26 Feb 21
  1. Supremes - "Uptight" (2:50)
  2. Supremes - "Money" (2:58)
Review: A few weeks ago, the sneaky Soul Masters label launched via a must-have "45" featuring two 1960s soul bombs from Welsh sex-machine Mr Jones. For this sequel, the limited-edition imprint has dipped into the back catalogue of premier Motown legends and chosen two killer covers of songs first made famous by other artists on the iconic soul label's roster. On the A-side you'll find their storming version of Stevie Wonder hit 'Uptight (Everything's All Right)', a take that's just as stomping and horn-heavy as the more familiar original, with the added bonus of smoother soul vocals from the ladies and first time on 7 inch vinyl. Turn to the flip for their interpretation of Barrett Strong hit 'Money (That's What I Want)', a more fuzzy and sax-laden affair of a song that was famously also covered by the Beatles on With The Beatles.

Review: Jorun Bombay is one of Canada's most influential hip-hop protagonists and his fantastic cover of the recently turned 80 year old Roy Ayers in the form of 'Revisiting The Sunshine' is one of his biggest tunes. A recent reissue on white vinyl sold out in quick time so now comes another chance to own it, this time on black wax. This one followed Jorun's recent edit series and is authentic to its soulful core. As summer fades away and autumn looms, keep the sunny vibes alive with this golden, heart warming version. On the flip is something just as sunny - a fine version of 'Funky Sensation' that gets a precision Bombay treatment.

Light My Fire (reissue) (7" 再プレス)
Cat: OTS 206. Rel: 30 Apr 21
  1. Light My Fire (Ryuhei The Man Chicago edit) (3:25)
  2. Light My Fire (2:41)
Review: Ryuhei The Man has been utilising his scalpel skills a lot of late, in the process offering up a string of floor-friendly re-edits that stay true to the original ethos of the artform. Here he offers a re-arrangement and extension of Erma Franklin's scintillating 1969 cover of Doors classic "Light My Fire", subtly looping up some key instrumental passages before unleashing the original's righteous horns and Franklin's fine vocal. By doing this, the dusty-fingered Japanese DJ/producer has managed to make the too-short original - which is of course featured on the flip - much more suitable for dancefloor spins. Most of his edits are good, but this one is genuinely extra-special.
