Star Wars Dub
Star Wars Dub (LP + CD)
Cat: BSRLP 831. Rel: 31 May 24
Review: Originally sold to Secret Records, this sought-after album features tracks recorded at Channel One Studio with Sly Dunbar at the helm. Despite its iconic cover featuring Darth Vader, the mixes remain solid, featuring tracks like Jimmy London's 'Ride On' and 'Open The Gate' by Well Pleased & Satisfied. While DubMusic has evolved, this album's riddims still hold up well, offering enjoyable dub with quality effects. In a competitive field, acknowledging its historical significance while recognising the evolution of dub music. Star Wars Dub remains a worthwhile addition to any collection, evoking nostalgia for the golden age of reggae and dub.

Review: From Then 'Til Now marks Roots Architects' debut full-length album, a monumental project bringing together over 50 of Jamaica's most iconic session musicians. Spanning from the birth of reggae in the late 1960s to the present day, the album is a celebration of the unsung heroes of reggae music: the rhythm builders or Roots Architects. Conceived by Swiss keyboardist and producer Mathias Liengme, the album is the culmination of years of dedication to honoring Jamaica's musical legacy. Liengme's journey began in 2013 with "The Inspirators" project, leading to his immersion in Kingston's studio scene and the eventual formation of Roots Architects. Recorded in Kingston studios over February and March 2017, the album features a stellar lineup of veteran musicians aged 60 to 85, including legends like Robbie Lyn, Fil Callender, and Dalton Browne. Together, these Roots Architects revive the spirit of reggae, creating nine instrumental tracks that pay homage to their enduring legacy and timeless artistry.

The Dub Generals
Cat: WJ 2191.
Review: Wackies Rhythm Force was the Wackie's label's session band and they first put out this album, The Dub Generals, in 1998. It is now reissued on the original label but as a self-titled The Dub Generals LP. It still packs the same essential and pure dub punch that it always did and for that reason, it's a sought-after original that costs a few quid if and when you manage to find one. The label was headed up by dub producer Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes who maintained a busy studio in the Bronx and worked with several different key players such as Horace Andy. The label was also a key inspiration for the legendary Berlin dub techno dons Basic Channel.

Review: Freddie McKay's Creation album, produced by Ossie Hibbert, presents a masterful fusion of original compositions and inspired covers, showcasing McKay's talent alongside reggae legends like Burning Spear and Dennis Brown. Hibbert's production expertise shines through, creating a seamless blend of classic reggae sound with subtle dub elements. The album's strength lies in its ability to breathe new life into familiar classics while maintaining the integrity of the originals. McKay's performances exude authenticity and passion, supported by skilled musicians who excel in the 'rockers' style of the seventies.

Review: Slave Call by The Ethiopians is a majestic exploration of the spiritual roots of reggae, led by deep Nyabinghi drumming and chanting. Leonard Dillon's Rastafarian beliefs are at the album's core, evident in every track, including a profound rendition of the Ethiopian national anthem. Max Edwards' Nyabingi drumming infuses the album with authenticity and is skillfully showcased by producer Niney Holness, who delivers a rhythm-heavy production while giving equal attention to vocals. The album blends traditional Nyabinghi elements with guitars, bass, keyboards, and horns, creating a rich reggae sound that maintains a dignified restraint. Holness' arrangements ingeniously reinforce the album's themes, exemplified by the title track's evocative depiction of slaving field hands. Other highlights include the driving urgency of 'Hurry On' and the soulful blend of blues in 'Culture.' Leonard Dillon's exceptional performance imbues each song with power and devotion, making 'Slave Call' one of his greatest achievements. With its cultural depth and musical excellence, the album stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of reggae's spiritual roots.

Two Sevens Clash (30th Anniversary Edition)
Cat: SHAN 45065LP. Rel: 03 May 24
Review: Pivotal players in both the nascent dub, dancehall and punk scenes of the late 70s, Culture (not, in our estimation, named as such for no reason) emerged from the fecund, twinned musical grounds of Jamaica and the United Kingdom; 1977's Two Sevens Clash was released during, and named after, that crucial year, and serendipitously found itself embraced by the new punks. Though it's famous for this association, this is an electronic/dub album through and through, and could have commanded just as much respect at any other time. A beautifully clear yet vintage sound abounds here, whether on the jabbing bubbles of title track, the lyrical privations of 'See Them A Come', or the prophetic professions of 'Pirate Days'.

Review: Anyone who has followed Emotional Rescue knows it has always does a fine job of documenting pock punk and dubs early years, not least by showcasing the previously unheralded work of Skinbat Scramble. Now they back that up once more with a new compilation that puts together a selection of the band's previously unreleased recordings. It is a superb trip through a number of decades and finds core members Mark Eason and Fergus Crockford distilling slow tempos, experimental sounds, dub, and much more into leftfield rhythms for body and mind.

Love & Harmony
Cat: BSRLP 835. Rel: 31 May 24
Review: Erroneously credited solely to Fred Locks on its 1978 release, this superb set is in fact a showcase of the work of the 12 Tribes Of Israel band in collaboration with the aforementioned artist; the collab also includes Earl 'Little Roy' Lowe, Albert Malawi, the Creation Steppers and Cherry Rock. With the 12 Tribes first forming in 1968 as a Rastafarian organisation based in Kingston, this troupe brought exceptional works of OG lovers' rock to the table, amidst a wider cultic organisation that saw each member grouped into a formation modelled on the Biblical 12 tribes of Israel. You wouldn't know it from the sense of pure relief and love that wafts from the music here: Love & Harmony is a brilliant one, carrying a universalist message of racial and spiritual unity amid an acknowledgement of tough beginnings and the necessity of lock care.
