Review: 'Technopera' is the debut EP by Ampersounds (Fred Falke and Zen Freeman), featuring Rufus Wainwright. It's a bold claim for a debut electro-house EP to feature vocals by such a renowned artist. But Fred Falke nad Zen Freeman are no rookies either, having won the hearts of many a house and techno reveller in France, Europe and beyond since the 1990s. Ampersounds and the Wainwright collab was made manifest after an intellectual chat the trio shared over some highfalutin poetry; fittingly, Technopera has an air of intellectualism about it, with highlights like 'Solitude Of Heart' portraying a downtrodden mood blended with smart production and nods to '80s tropes.

'Ceasefire' is a collaborative EP with trip-hop collective Massive Attack and progressive hip-hop group Young Fathers. Up first is the main theme from 1974's subway hijack movie The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three and it is one with a funky, jazzy, high-octane sound that has been sampled by Company Flow, Mix Master Mike and many more. On the backside is an edit of a tune from Manfred Mann Chapter Three's self-titled 1969 LP. This one has been famously sampled by The Prodigy. Another great little 7".

Review: Jerskin Fendrix, a South London 'Windmill' scenester who has colaborated with Black Midi and is associated with the likes of Black Country New Road among others, is one of the last names you'd expect to see soundtracking a big movie, but then Poor Things' director Yorgos Lanthimos is a character who rarely plays by the rules. This is the first film of his to include an original soundtrack, and also Fendrix's first soundtrack, the latter describing their relationship as being that of young lovers encountering the experience for the first time. The results are coy and innocent sounding, probably as a result, as well stirring and melancholic, with an emphasis on the breathier sounds in the canon and unusual instruments such as harp, bagpipes and hamonium alongside the more traditional strings and other orchestral trimmings. A remarkable soundtrack for a remarkable film.

Review: Veteran electrohead and former artist on the Rephlex Records roseter DMX Krew's Ed DMX takes the well-known story by Jorge Luis Borges of The Library of Babel, said to contain all the different languages of the earth. Some deep philosophical thought has gone into the album's concept, but we'll leave that to Ed to explain. Instead, we'll tell you that from beginning to end there's plenty of the kind of trademark 80s synth playfulness in evidence, with a generally more mellow and soundtrack-related rather than frenetic and dancefloor-filling vibe in evidence, even on faster tracks like 'The Combed Thunderclap'. Still, Ed knows what he's doing when it comes to this kind of leftfield electro gear, and it's a rewarding, never boring listen.

First up it is German minimal maestro Isolee who flips 'Fade' into some of his signature sounds - smeared synths and abstract designs all weave together over a minimal beat to make for something seductive and late night. Polish loop master Jan Jelinek then flips 'Fade' into a slow motion shuffle with bright, celestial shards of melodic light and downbeat, melancholic vocals over a chugging beat. Review: Back in the 1990s, the combination of Mixmaster Morris, Jonah Sharp (he of Spacetime Continuum fame) and Haruomi Hosono was the closest thing you got to an ambient supergroup (the Orb's collaboration with Robert Fripp and Thomas Fehlmann as FFWD not withstanding). The trio only recorded one album together, the sublime Quiet Logic, but it's an absolute doozy - as this timely reissue proves. For one reason or another, it was only ever released in Japan at the time, meaning this is the first time it has been available worldwide. As you'd expect with such masters of the art form at the helm, it is genuinely superb - a slowly evolving opus that moves between unfurling, dub-fired ambient techno ('Waraitake') to ambient jazz eccentricity ('Dr Gauss/Yakan Hiko (Night Flight)'), via deep ambient d&b ('Uchu Yuei (Night Swimming)') and deep space ambient.

Review: The cult favourite Dark Entries hits 15 in style here and celebrates in the only way it knows how - with more great music. This time it is the legendary synth-punk yahoos Crash Course in Science aka Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny who are in the spotlight. The group formed back in 1979 and set out to make music using toy instruments and kitchen appliances. Their punk-y, aggressive, angular sound soon found a hardcore fan base and gave rise to big tunes like 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns.' In 1981 they recorded Near Marineland, a full-length that never actually saw the light of day but does now and shows the band moving into more diverse and polished territory.

Review: Before I Die have been putting out some high-grade leftfield delights from respected operators like Bernardino Femminelli, Tungusku and most recently Sewell & The Gong. Now it's the turn of Klangkollektor, indulging a collection of hazy dub excursions which sit somewhere near Balearic splendour, piano-charged melancholy and isolation tank meditation. In the dub tradition the approach is consistent and evenly paced, but it's certainly not aiming for any kind of typical Jamaican sound. Instead, there's a gentle introspection to the melodic content which gels perfectly with the spacious approach to mixing, unfurling across four sides of wax for an album you can just melt into.

Review: Marie Davidson's latest single 'Y.A.A.M.' is a poignant critique of power dynamics in the music industry - favouring authenticity and passion in a world that thrives on branding and transactional relationships - out of which the Canadian artist finds fuel to fan the driving flames of existential industrial electro-techno. The track opens with a juddering, in-between-4x4-and-2-step electro beat, which lasts for over a minute before Davidson takes up the mic: "do you follow me?". What ensues is an imperfect list of music industry quibbles, which flow over the monstrously huge backing - "entrepreneurs, influencers, producers, managers / nothing for you and me" - in stark but gallows-comedic contrast to the plea to relocate our arses to the dancefloor. In Davidson's own words, the track was inspired by a haughty, lecturing email from a music industry insider: "I took the opportunity to write down how I felt about the words," she recalls, "and the overall tone of arrogance of what I had just been sent quickly, I found myself having a bit too much fun."

Review: Early on in Muslimgauze's (Bryn Jones') career, the musician released two ultra-mysterious releases on the equally mysterious label Hessian, which some speculate might've been comprised entirely of Jones himself. Hammer & Sickle was one of these two early LPs from the faux Arabic auteur, and was notable for its distinct lack of any back cover artwork (who needs a visual stimulus when you've got such great music on board?). Though still indicative of Jones' work as Muslimgauze, superfans will note that this release sounds a little more formative than some of his later releases, owing to its lessened use of Middle Eastern instrumentation and sparser production in general. B-sider 'Fear Of Gadaffi' is the most intermittent in this regard, revelling more than anything in the simple effect of spring delay on sampled, freeform perc hits.

Review: New-York-based double-act Matt Stephenson and live drummer Sean Kelly have carved out a distinctive hole in the wall of alternative music, melding hard rock, breakcore and experimental industrial-electro into a whole unique aesthetic. In the studio, just like the inception of Machine Girl, Matt goes it alone, resulting in some of the most beloved alt albums of the decade (Namely 2014's 'Wlfgrl', a favourite of the underground snob).

Their first soundtrack comes courtesy of Game-Award-nominated speed-focused platformer 'Neon White', a collaboration between Anapurna Studios and Ben Esposito, the mastermind behind 'Donut County'. The game is breakneck, following Neon White as he blasts his way through the realms of heaven in search of the mechanical halo, which allows the wearer to stay in heaven for a year. Set against a vibrant colour palette, the mixture of breakcore, techno and bubbly jungle is a perfect fit for the fast-paced levels that 'The Wicked Heart' scores.

Review: La Monte Young is one of the most important figures in the development of American minimal composition and performance, having explored the science of sound at an atomic level through his use of just intonation and rational number-based tuning systems. His wife Marian Zeeler was also one of his closest collaborators, and in 1974 they released their second album Dream House 78'17" as a demonstration of the ideas they had been proposing in their work. Side A was recorded at a private concert which also features Jon Hassell and Garrett List, while Side B is an extended tonal study via a bowed gong, which was monitored precisely through oscilloscopes for an exacting immersion in harmonic interplay and its physical and psychoacoustic properties.

Review: After numerous patches, Cyberpunk 2077 has come an astoundingly long way since Keanu Reeves himself announced it at the now-defunct E3 expo. Phantom Liberty is an expansion on the original game set in Dogtown, the ruins of an abandoned luxury development project that was forced to be scrapped when old military complexes, bunkers and labs were uncovered by construction. A tale of espionage and political intrigue ensues, scored by P.T. Adamczyk and Jacek Paciorkowski once again following the duo's Game Award-nominated original score. The highlight is, of course, 'Phantom Liberty', the title and credits track that features Polish X Factor winner and multi-diamond recording artist Dawid Podsiadlo, his voice booming in front of the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Review: As the title suggests, Broadcast have collected all their demo recordings made between 2000 and 2006 and compiled them onto a single 14-track record. But that's not the main piece of news: sadly, this one marks the end of releasing from the band, tying the bow on an game-changing career to say the least. Many of these tender tidbits were worked into finished productions appearing on Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon; it's an impressive flex to be able to flaunt your one-offs and pack them onto a single recorded finale. What's more, the connotations aroused by form - demos - as well as the sonic content of these gems plays nicely up to Broadcast's now well-established aesthetic, which is one for the ages, to be sure. The album also includes two songs discovered by James after bandmate Trish's passing: 'Come Back To Me' and 'Please Call To Book' which was her response to Broadcast's 2006 'Let's Write A Song' project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song.

Review: On limited yellow vinyl comes the latest LP from the elusive ambient moniker known as Abul Mogard - impossibly distant, impossibly close - this time made in collaboration with equal and match, Rafael Anton Irisarri. Having made friends serendipitously at the sold-out opening of the SoundSet Series at Madrid's Condeduque cultural center in 2023, at which they performed together for the first time, the duo's encore that evening compelled them to get their heads down and commit to a collaborative studio session. What followed was an intense, modular-synthetic jam that, in its final studio-polished incarnation, unfurls and ripples like dark pond water. Both tracks, most notably 'Waking Up Dizzy on a Bastion', slow-burns into the heights of glory and tearful sentiment, as if capturing the feeling of time slowing down when confronted with death in the heat of fortressed battle.

Review: In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Naruto, 22d Music top up their excitations with a new, symphonic rendition of the music of the famous anime series. Defined by her voluptuous, Barbie-esque allure and hot pink Corvette, Angelyne emerged as an enigmatic figure in 1984 who graced LA billboards with a provocative presence. The mystique and allure around her built to a peak and culminated in this second solo album released in 1986. Featuring eight tracks of bubblegum-hued new wave, Angelyne blends LA punk grit with flashy synth-pop on sassy titles like 'Sex Goddess' and 'Skin Tight.' This cult classic, now pressed on pink Corvette-coloured vinyl, includes a 2-sided poster with lyrics and commemorates the legacy of a true Hollywood legend.
